There ain't too many Walmarts. I live Sheridan Ohio close to South point Ohio and the nearest Walmart is almost 10 miles away. If they would pay their employees what they should for the amount of labor they put in, they could actually keep employees around long enough to get the store in shape and keep it that way. Instead they hire someone with no experience, "train" them with videos that they're rushed through (usually there alone with 1 new manager not knowing what they're doing, but has a ton of work to do) then thrown onto the floor to stock shelves with the overabundance of untouched freight in the back. They expect way too much to get done with way too little employees. So employees walk out, within months, sometimes weeks or days... it's a viscous cycle.
Yeah that's a tough retail grocer to work for. Basically just two and rarely three employees to maintain the register, to stock merchandise, off load the trucks, and have to deal with customers constantly streaming in and out. Can burn out pretty quick.
And dg should not lay employee off of work just because there sick this is a major problem with alot of companies for decades it needs to change! BBB better business bureau!

Give DG Truck Drivers there credit! A lot of the Dollar General stores are definitely not truck friendly and it’s difficult to maneuver a 53ft trailer in a 60 sq ft lot. The drivers also are required to unload the truck by themselves in hot, cold, rain or snow. Sheesh 😬
Yeah and you forgot to mention that they hire any dude who comes in for an interview to be a DG truck driver. One time I had a truck driver deliver to the store I worked at and he was high on meth and brought his gf with him to help him unload. Y I K E S
I work for DG. The place is hell to work for. They keep cutting our hours, only want two people working at a time, and force unreasonable rules on us. We hardly ever have anything on the shelves because 1: They cut we stockhands hours so badly that we have no time to get stuff out. 2: They refuse to send us items we need. Our overstock is full of the same things over and over again, but never send items we actually need. 3: They just don't care about us as long as a store makes money. It is not just the 1 I work at, but all that I have had to go help. If somebody can last 5 months working for them, then it is a miracle. Even now that they are making a ton of money right now, they demand that stores cut hours even more making it hard for even people who have worked for them for 5-10 years struggle to get by now.
I quit QUIT after up to 13 years of being there, n it was WAS the best thing that I ever did!!! They don't care about thier employees and it shows... I could go on but I'm not.
If you don't like them then don't go there...but they really do have a place in retail. They are in many really small communities that no one else serves.
Just like how online shopping is doing "harm" . Nothing you can do. People will go where they want to go. Times have changed. Of course, on somethings not for the better.

My grandmother (decently young for a grandmother), used to work at Dollar Tree, she was a manager, but then she quit and took a job at Dollar General. I still miss going to Dollar Tree every once and a while to go see her and get something.

Watching this DG promotional ad I am amazed how clean and tidy the shopping aisles look! The DG's I visit are visually trashed and untidy. They are however a great convenience store when you need a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk or packaged meats. Remember the days when Walmart was a new concept store that literally drove every mom & pop store out of business?

Lol!!! I really though these stores came out in the late 90's!! Really didn't start shopping at dollar general until mid 2000's been a customer every since! Lol
Used to be the five and dime and woolworths. I love all the Dollar stores. It works for me big time. Great deals and now frozen foods and meats so yes it's great.
Can somebody PLEASE tell me why everyone is referring to Dollar General as a "dollar store?" Several of them popped up over the last year or two in my area. I had never seen, or even heard of, the chain before, so I decided to go in to look around about a month after one opened its doors about three miles from my home. I wanted to see how they compared to the other stores that sold things for A DOLLAR OR LESS in my area (e.g. Family Dollar, Dollar Tree. Dollar Stop, and Dollar Express). I was stymied, to say the least. THESE ARE NOT DOLLAR STORES!! They are, at best, glorified 7-Elevens, Wawas, or gas station convenience stores. It's hard, as a matter of fact, to find very many things that ARE a dollar or less outside of candy bars or mints near the register. So, beware, people; You are free to call your store whatever you want to. However, just because a store has the word "DOLLAR" in its name, it isn't necessarily what any sane person would call a "dollar store." I take total umbrage with the makers of this video referring to it that way. Perhaps they never shopped in one.
Yes. This is a pet peeve of mine too. Also, I hear a lot of old timers call it general dollar. You mine as well call Walmart the dollar store too, because they’re way cheaper than dollar general.
Our local family dollar is a rip lol. We used to have a store called, the dollar store. However, they had things in there with price tags upwards of 70$ . Place was shit anyways, glad its gone.
I say dollar because for a long time we didn't have dollar tree. We don't have dollar express or the other one u mention. Out city always said dollar store. U had dollar general and family dollar. So that's where store store came from around my part of the world. I'm sane . and its just a name we called it. And u may call ur store what ever as well. Don't have to be rude about it. I might say tarot u might say potatoes.
I live in an area that only had 2 little gas pump stores. To go to any large store is a major project for me. I'm disabled and my van only gets 14 miles per gallon. To go to a Walmart or Wegmans is a half day project and exhausts me. To have a shop like that 3 miles away is a Godsend! 99 per cent of the time they have what I need. I can get there in minutes and get home. The employees at our DG are some of the nicest people! They are very helpful, caring people and always stop what they are doing if I ask for help. They are some of the hardest workers I've seen in a long time. I agree, they should be paid more and have more help.

I am a big fan of Dollar General. I can see why they are recession proof, love the prices. I only buy certain things there but it has been very beneficial for me.
I went to one of Dollar General stores in my daughter's neighborhood and a big wig was there talking to the manager and as I was at the check out, a employee came in for her shift, he looked at her turned to that store manager and said "jeans" if I was in one of my hateful moods I would gave him a piece of my mind. That girl is a very sweet girl. There could of been dozens of reasons why she was dressed in jeans. At least she had DG shirt on, her hair was clean. Etc.,etc. He should not ever say something like that in front of a shopper. Let it happen again!!! Let along not enough room to get around in the store and some of the stuff is junk.

I always go to DG...Its close to my house and the employees are very friendly .If you dont like the store, stay out of it ! No reason to say anything bad about the store.
As for a reason? How about they don't pay their workers a living wage and expect long hours for crap pay, sometimes 50-60 hours a week? Or how they intentionally understaff their stores to save money which leaves the worker isolated at night and an easy target for robbers but still won't give a pay raise when they make 3.8 billion a year
I live in a small town where the local mom and pop grocery store sold to India people and things went south. The grocery store closed and opened up a liquor store. Dollar general came to town and saved the day. I no longer have to drive twelve miles for quick trips for maybe a quick trip for milk or to. They are a blessing to us here in small town America.
Face it. We're all cheap and we want good quality goods and services. It's in our DNA. I have no problem with DG in so called food deserts, ghettos and rural areas where the other big retailers don't want to be..
I live rural. 2 years ago & 1 miles east a Dollar General went 'up', new building. I didn't have an issue with it, a lot of neighbors did, complained, went to the store just to express their disgust. They fretted their property values would go down in there cul de sac skippy neighborhood. Well then Covid-19 hit. Dollar General was yet well stocked, didn't price gouge & the Cashier told me the once snotty neighbors did an about-face & thanked them for being there. I'm a fan.
Much of the merchandise at Dollar General is $4- $5+. However, at Dollar Tree stores, everything is $1, and nothing exceeds that price. Sooo, why should I shop at Dollar General and pay $4-$5+ dollars, when I can go to Dollar Tree, and only pay $1 ???
This is just like when mom and pop stores were put out of business when Walmart came to town and people lose their jobs. You like high quality meat and other products? Support local business!
@Tony Brown Really? Are you presuming to speak on behalf of the entire country of maybe just your little part of it? Here in my little part of the world, southwest Virginia, in the beginning, back in the '50s, there were stores like Eagle, Newberry's, Kresses, Murphy's, Western Auto, Mick or Mack and Kroger (grocery stores...*just* groceries)...lots more. And those were the "big-name" stores. Sure, lot's of "ma and pa" stores...everywhere. But then along came Hill's and Grant's and 7-11 and Hop-In and...some of those "ma and pa" places started vanishing. Other things vanished, too, you know, like guys who would actually pump gasoline,,,into your car. Nope, gone...because everyone loved self-service. Amazing, wasn't it? Fewer people to pay but...those damned prices just kept going up, didn't they? And then came...K-Mart. And everyone loved it. Everyone was so happy! And those other stores like Eagle and on and on? Yeah, they vanished. And then came...Walmart. And everyone was even happier. And most of those "local" stores? Poof. Gone. Just like that. Kroger still remains, of course but now? Oh, I can buy patio furniture there. Isn't that just swell? And now K-Mart is gone and all that is left standing is...Walmart. And now everyone hates Walmart and wants people to shop...at local stores, ma-and-pa stores? That's funny. What is even funnier is that it is yet another "new" generation that wants to "return to the good ol' days". Or this way: "I don't wanna work for a huge corporation. I wanna own my own business, dammit!" And now Walmart is competing against...online "shopping," you know, places like Amazon. So either you live in "the city" somewhere, where pretty much all you've ever known are "ma and pa" stores (and I am truly guessing at that 'cause I ain't never, and have no intentions of, stepping foot inside a "big city"), or you're just really young and have no memory of these things. But no, it is not "bullshit". It is the inevitable natural order of things meaning only that one day, yep, even "online shopping" will be a thing of the past. Tony, stay safe and be well.
I hate to say it, but mom and pop shops often act like they’re doing you a favor. Family run businesses suffer bad attitudes and unfair return policies that would never fly in a corporate setting.
@Tony Brown Trying to sound...what? You can't complete a sentence...but you want me to believe you can actually complete a train of thought, you know, something that would let you state, with such absolute certainty, your original comment: "Total bullshit". Well, since you prefer brevity: Thanks, but no. I ain't buyin' your bullshit.
It really depends on the mom and pop store. Some get complacent when they're the only game in town with dirty stores and low quality. If that happens then stores like Dollar General thrive. Where I live there's a DG, a Sav A Lot, and a larger locally owned grocery store. All serve their purpose.
I remembered as a teenager back early 1990 dollar general had great choices in clothes than today. Example I remembered my mom buying me a pair of l.a. gear tennis shoes. Those blue jeans that had button fly and the top part folded down into v shape and they were acid wash. I remember back in late 1990s I took my granny to dollar general just remind ya she's never been in one. It was close to Christmas time and omg I thought I would never got her out there😂😂😂💕💕. I love the one in Canton tx. They have aisles in unique way. Very well organized and very clean.
The good thing with DG...is that the malls are closing because when the retail stores are not doing well....they close the small town malls...leaving no place to go for general merchandise. I was even surprised to find some organic cookies and crackers.
My kids love to go to DG so they only have to drive 2min (we live in the country) instead of driving 15min into our town of Portland TN. Our first house was only a few miles from DG Headquarters in Goodlettsville TN.

NONE of those DG stores are grocery stores, though if I expand the search area to 20 miles, 1 of the 4 stores in that expanded area is a fairly decent grocery store...right across the road from another grocery store.
The D.G where I live remodeled the whole store a few months back. They brought in more frozen foods. Also fruits and vegetables. I live in a small town. We have a little grocery store down the road from the D.G. But they want to much money for their stuff. Happy we have a D.G.

You said DG started out with dollar items in the early 50s, but when I lived back then a dollar was expensive, our cheaper stores were called 'fine and ten' or '5 & 10' you could get things for a dime or nickel and a quarter was the more expensive items. Back then regular size candy bars were 5c at any store. There is no Dollar General or Family Dollar store anywhere near me for many miles where I live now, but there are dollar stores especially Dollar Tree, they are everywhere.
I go into several DG, the corporate is the worse to work for. I have seen many Managers being abused, overworked and underpaid. They cut hours which leaves manager to work 60 + hours a week. They have no family lives, no sleep and they are tired from the work load. No wonder they can't get employees. My daughter has put her heart and soul as a manager in this company, and finally after years of opening a new store, and pulling another store back together and helping out at other stores finally realized this company didn't care. I am so glad she left. The stress was unbearable, and I could see it in her. Glad she left, we are happy she made this choice.

As a consumer, you have to be smarter than the average bear: of course DG isn't THE best place to get *everything* you need. But, if you want to get a FEW things at decent prices, quickly-- (you know, the way we *use* to just run into Walmart for milk, before that chain became the magnum opus of conglomeracy); OR, if your mobility is limited (i.e. no car, you're physically disabled, you live in a tiny town that's MILES away from a larger town, etc.), DG is pretty good... That said, I too have heard (from someone who managed one of their stores) they aren't the best organization to work for-- they create more 'employee stress' than there ought to be... I'd say, that's an area I'd be seriously looking at if I were an *investor* looking to improve the company and make it *worth investing in...* fwiw
We have one when it first opened it was nice. Then it went down hill stock not put on shelves and long lines. Now it's nice again, I get my sodas there when they go on sale. Hair dye and body gel too.

This is the exact training i received and was eventualy fired(2 weeks) because, well, I'm a well rounded employee and that's not what merica is seeking in the laborforce these days.
And zero insurance costs for DG due to the turnover before you are able to get insurance.
Athena, you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!!
Be nice to the employees at DG. I work at one, and so many people who come in are assholes who think they’re god.
People are just assholes by nature

Give DG Truck Drivers there credit! A lot of the Dollar General stores are definitely not truck friendly and it’s difficult to maneuver a 53ft trailer in a 60 sq ft lot. The drivers also are required to unload the truck by themselves in hot, cold, rain or snow. Sheesh 😬
I was on DG dedicated account...it whooped my ass
Props. I’ve noticed that at MANY location! Thank you!

I did it too, but for Family Dollar. I lost 27lbs
What.!!✊👊👏 What!!✊👊👏
I work for DG.
Slave labor is what this sounds like. My sympathy to you. I pray you find a better job.

If you don't like them then don't go there...but they really do have a place in retail. They are in many really small communities that no one else serves.
Dont worry we wont.....
Just like how online shopping is doing "harm" . Nothing you can do. People will go where they want to go. Times have changed. Of course, on somethings not for the better.
They take advantage of employees who might not have the skills, transportation or other needs to find good employment somewhere else. They treat their employees like garbage. Everyone Deserves a job where they can maintain their Dignity.
@@Akinsh58 You do understand that no one is required to work there. I don't work for them and have no special love for Dollar General, but that's quite a hate list you have for them. Sounds to me like they employ people who really need a job. It's not a career - they can move on to better jobs.

As a disabled person i like the smaller stores, as i can walk through them if i go to a larger store i need a motorized cart, which isnt always available

Remember Dolgens back in the 80's? DOLlar GENeral
I live in the home town of dollar General and that's what we call it. We refer to dollar General as the warehouse and dollar store as the store. Lol
We have two dollar General stores in my area good deals and they stay busy even in these trying times.

As for a reason? How about they don't pay their workers a living wage and expect long hours for crap pay, sometimes 50-60 hours a week? I live rural. 2 years ago & 1 miles east a Dollar General went 'up', new building. I didn't have an issue with it, a lot of neighbors did, complained, went to the store just to express their disgust. They fretted their property values would go down in there cul de sac skippy neighborhood. Well then Covid-19 hit. Dollar General was yet well stocked, didn't price gouge & the Cashier told me the once snotty neighbors did an about-face & thanked them for being there. I'm a fan.
I go to Dollar General often and save a lot of money shopping there and that's a fact!

I would pay 4 dollars for a blind bag, My kids always get them when they go the dollar general. Probably not you, I'm pretty wealthy.
@Ocean Deyy Yup, Agreed

This is just like when mom and pop stores were put out of business when Walmart came to town and people lose their jobs. You like high quality meat and other products? Support local business!
@Tony Brown
Really?
I wanna own my own business, dammit!"
And now Walmart is competing against...online "shopping," you know, places like Amazon.
@Tony Brown
Trying to sound...what?
You can't complete a sentence...but you want me to believe you can actually complete a train of thought, you know, something that would let you state, with such absolute certainty, your original comment: "Total bullshit".
Well, since you prefer brevity:
Thanks, but no.

5&dime was around when I was young dollar was good to have
I go into several DG, the corporate is the worse to work for.
This is the only positive comment that I've read from an employee.
As a consumer, you have to be smarter than the average bear: of course DG isn't THE best place to get *everything* you need.
But, if you want to get a FEW things at decent prices, quickly-- (you know, the way we *use* to just run into Walmart for milk, before that chain became the magnum opus of conglomeracy);
OR, if your mobility is limited (i.e. no car, you're physically disabled, you live in a tiny town that's MILES away from a larger town, etc.), DG is pretty good...
