It seems like what kills stores is that when the original owners retire or the store gets bought by a new owner, things go south. Often new management tries to run them differently, rebrand them, sell off their real estate, run them into debt, or other means. It just seems like we have let too many mergers and buyouts happen. This killed the local flare and local ownership, and the store becoming part of the local town culture aspect.

Oh, definitely room for a part two on this topic! Northern California had several small to larger chains that went by the wayside over the decades! Food Villa, Fry's, PW Super and Gemco to name a few! Where I went to high school there were two almost identical large retail lot spaces right across the street from each other! One housed a full Alpha Beta and the other had an Albertsons for some reason! A funny thing about the Fry's Supermarkets. When they decided to go into electronics in the 90s they didn't change the font on the signs from the grocery stores and the old mascot that was a smiling grocery bag then became a smiling computer chip! Haha!

Pantry Pride was my favorite. They had the best grocery prices and doubled the face value of coupons.

Growing up in Illinois, I have very fond memories of going on shopping trips to Eagle's with my Dad. If he were alive today, he's love to see this video. Thanks for making it!

In Winston Salem NC, we had Food Fair, (not to be confused with the other mentioned in this video), A&P, Winn Dixie, Kroger. Now we have Walmart, Aldi, Lidl, Publix, and Whole Foods.

I have some fond memories of Grand Union. There used to be one in a town I used to live, until it was taken over by CVS. 😠 I remember residents of the town had tried boycotting it, and I likely would have too if I had been older. It was the only actual grocery store in the town. After it closed, some like my family were forced to go to a grocery store in a nearby town that was more costly. 🤦‍♀️

Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of Grand Union. Was that store small or was the CVS just big? They seem like they would be two different sizes.

@@RhettyforHistory The store was average size, I think. Wasn't the biggest, but not small. When Grand Union left ); CVS took over the building, which is unfortunate still there and operating. /:

I'm sitting here looking at pictures of old grocery stores from before I was born, in a country I've never been to. The older car styles were so much better than today.

Back in the 70’s in the Akron Ohio area there was a Fisher Fazio grocery store. Have yet to hear anyone mention it.

One you missed was Penn Fruit. I believe this may have only been local to Pennsylvania/New Jersey area. Another, Shop-N-Bag, was my go to store when I left home and got out on my own.

I remember the old A & P market in Wolfeboro N.H. I shopped there with my mom when I was a little girl many years ago. In all honesty, she preferred a little corner store call the Market Basket which was more expensive, but smaller and easier to navigate. I know A & P is long gone but I think Market Basket still exists as Harvest Market.

I remember that A&P from the summers when we'd stay for a week or two in Wolfeboro. My mom liked to shop there for the cottage we rented on Rust Pond.
