British guy attempts to draw outlines of all US STATES from memory (amusing results)

- Today we take on the US State Drawing Challenge from Hugequiz and once again put my questionable border knowledge to the test.
With less even less geographical features to draw from these time, I attempt to draw every single US State from memory in a bid to score as many points as possible.
Last week in my home continent of Europe it was a mixed bag, and today promises to be no different...
A link to this quiz: hugequiz.com/quizzes/us-state...
I wanna hear your best names for my newly created states in the comments
also, surely it's shrank? I reckon the film got it wrong..
Shrank is correct. Shrunk would only correctly be used if you want the past participle. i.e: "I shrank New York" or "I have shrunk New York".
Deseret
You had an average score of 69.
Nice.
How much can you zoom in on this? Could you have zoomed in to find the national borders?
Tenntucky and Kennessee
Let's call that state Oraygone
They should vote on a referendum
Oh-hay-gone? The disappearing state - only appears when you least expect it?
I believe they pronounce it "Oar-' aH -G'n" there. Similar to "OR + again".
UTAHLLME
NewTa
Love that Tom zoomed in to find the Columbia because he knows it's the border between Orreygone and Washington, but not to find the Mississippi River which provides the border (or partial border) for like 10(?) states
The ensuing hilarity of calling out the columbia as the border too but then not actually using it to draw the border...
surely he pronounces it something closer to orreygun
@@shadowseek27 It's because the Yanks pronounce oregano a funny way :)
@@roginkthe only difference is which syllable is stressed 😉
OR-eh-gun
o-REH-gunno
or the Ohio r.
Considering you missed basically the whole of Utah, I'd just call the state Utah.
He had the shape right but upside down and in the wrong spot. So close Tom. In all fairness, as an American I think there are a number of states he would do better than me on.
And the Utah he drew could be Mormania
@@ianmahaney5140 true, Idaho is more mormon than Utah in some places
At least he got the salt lake
The ten newest states:
Newtah (UT)
Northvada (NV)
Panhandleton (TX)
Mesabi (MN)
Wisconsout (WI)
Sans Serifia (LA)
The Cumberland Void (KY,TN)
Fingerlakeshire (NY)
Up-upstate (NY)
The Montpelier Exclusionary Zone (VT)
Fingerlakeshire is already called Western New York, so as to not be confused by those city folk down in the corner of the state
Those 13 stripes and 60 stars. *salutes*
These are A tier names 😂
As a New Yorker who has spent most of my life in NYC and spent a few years upstate, your drawing of New York had me dying.
What is the ADK?
bro fr that is how city people would draw NY state LMAO
knew enough to know buffalo was the end, but placed it at rochester...
@@Salutmoicestrafit’s the Adirondack mountains/forest, one of the most beautiful parts of the country in my opinion
Took us finger lakers completely out of New York into limbo
As an American, I was chuckling at times. And then I realized how poorly I would do at a lot of these. And then I realized how much worse I'd do outside of the US. And then I shut my mouth, lol.
Yeah I wanna see you do the European map ;)
“Got a little bit of land there if anybody wants it”. Literally made me laugh
As a Canadian I'd like to thank you for giving us a bunch more land
Like you don’t have enough land 😂
I like how he said Lake Michigan right and then corrected himself and said it wrong
was looking for this hahaha
You just KNOW things are gonna get crazy when Tom hits you with the (Amusing Results) in the title
you might be one of the last people I'd expect to comment on this video.

Utah, you hit flip on Tetris at the last second and flubbed it upside down 😂
Hawaii and Alaska have left messages
Puerto Rico didn't, because they don't have a right to leave messages
He'd still get a 95 on Hawaii somehow lol
I'll be 6 feet under the cold cold ground before I recognize Missouri!
Were you recording though?
we can only presume so!

Great effort mate!
You got the Illinois borders around Chicago right and that's all that counts in my eyes ;)
the rest of illinois disliked this post 💀
Nothing if not consistent, CG 😂
As a Chicagoan that outline was hilarious.
@@JamesTundra all 9 of them
That section of Utah that was missing is seriously the most beautiful part of the entire country. Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Arches are all must visit places.
Fun fact: Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico are the only 4 states that meet at a point, so that may help with that area in the future! Also, that area of Utah has many major national parks, so we can just call it govt land
Kentuckians and Tennesseans and New Yorkers: "look how you've massacred my boy" 😂

Masters of the Universe🤣
Underrated comment 🧐📐
This was both the funniest and most painful thing to watch. Poor Tom thinks every state is either a square or a blob😂😂
As a Utahn, upside down Utah mostly in Idaho killed me 😂
Like he got the rather unique bit of the shape pretty much spot on but purely by accident
Funny thing is Salt Lake is still in the state. Despite missing most of Utah, he got most Utahns
As a Utahn, it was hilarious to see you somehow miss the entirety of the state. Also, I laughed for like 30 minutes straight when you did Tennessee 😂 the way you just drew a random blob without even giving a crap about the shape was hilarious
And then redoing the blob, somehow even worse 😂
No apology necessary. I consider myself a huge geography nerd, and an American, and I know I wouldn't have done a better job. Well, except for maybe Tennessee. lol
one must keep in mind the outline of the chef holding the plate of KFC! helps with the boot shape of louisiana, too. and the almost-straight-line-at-this-scale of the river borders up his back
@jlt131 the Mississippi is east of those states; it goes along his front side, not his back
@@zarzee8925 ah, my mistake! I didn't check the map close enough (I'm also not american). Is the back line just arbitrary then?
Tennessee got butchered!
@jlt131 looks like some other rivers plus some borders defined in Native American treaties. I had to look up the individual states, I didn't know either lol.
Getinsburg
28:00 the new state would be Deseret, which was the original name of the area that the mormons proposed when they moved there
I came to the comments just to see if someone had already made this point. Since I'm not the first, I'll just add the bit of trivia that Deseret is a reference to the Book of Mormon that means "beehive". EDIT: correcting myself. It means "honeybee" not beehive. Confused it with the state nickname for a second.
it's weird to think that in an alternate universe Salt Lake City and Los Angeles would be in the same state. Vegas, too, I think
The irony of naming it Deseret when it includes everything of Utah except the Salt Lake area
@@AtticusRexNever would've lasted considering the PTSD the feds had with the California gold rush, they did not want to relinquish so much land to a potentially wealthy state like CA. Let alone their disputes with the federal governments going so far that they illegally immigrated to at the time Mexico to continue their illegal practices.
Idaho is a tough spawn. I wouldn’t be able to do it well without really thinking through the borders of all the surrounding states.
Hells Canyon on the Idaho-Oregon border would have been a good guide to get started.
Yeah I thought oh this wouldn't be that bad start with the obvious states then fill in the square ones but this is brutal.
Idaho is the best state (tied with Oregon), everyone should know it!
Id say its a middle of the road spawn. An easy way to remember its shape is that it kinda looks like an I. Same with Louisiana being an L
You did a beautiful job outlining the state capital - Arewe, Rekordin.
Utah is my home state and the fact that you pretty much just flipped it upside down makes me laugh. 😂
Devil's advocate, you got the spirit of most of the states spot on. Placement was off, but you had a good idea of rough shape and general location for many of the states. Except New York. I don't think I could name all 50 states, let alone place them accurately.
Umm, West Virginia? 😂
@@user-kv6wh5ut6oThere's too many Virginias anyways, to be fair.
This is what I thought too. I would have certainly gotten some zeros there, even though I've spent waaay too much time on Sporcle geography quizzes and can locate and name all the states. It's completely different to recognise a state from actual outlines and to draw one from memory. A bit like with languages, I can understand enough to read books in Spanish and Dutch but can't put together a coherent sentence of my own in either language.
upstate new York is tough
Tom is leaving space on the map for the secret states, which are where Night Vale, Springfield and Townsville are.
and area 51
And Gotham City
I bet those places actually exist. One can have hours of fun looking at the strange names of American towns on a map
I’m from Townsville, Queensland but I live in Montreal these days. One of my goals is to visit Townsville, North Carolina
I bet New Jerseyans felt proud that you included Staten Island as part of New Jersey
Starting off with Idaho is brutal. The game did you dirty on that one.
Could definitely be worse with Arkansas or something
@@marcgw496Arkansas has the Mississippi River and Ozarks as a border so I feel it’s def easier than Idaho lmao
Quiz: Please draw this state.
Tom: Draws a rectangle.
NJ put on a bit of weight. "Follow the Delaware river Tom!"
This video is too funny. Good job Tom, doubt I could do any better.
I'd definitely like to see you do this with English counties! As an American, it'd be interesting to see how familiar an Englishman is with all of those fiddly little counties. I've played a few map quizzes (the Seterra quizzes) of English counties so I have a moderate familiarity with them, but most Americans have absolutely no idea about the English counties. The more geographically literate Americans would recognize some of the more well known English counties like the Yorkshire counties and the Midlands, but they still wouldn't be able to accurately place them on the map.
Gets excited knowing that the Columbia River forms much of Oregon's northern border. Draws a straight line anyway.
People from Buffalo: "No one cares about us they only care about downstate."
Geowizard: mentions Buffalo and still misses half the state including Buffalo
Honestly…many of the shapes were pretty close. Bravo.
Such an entertaining video. You really are the Geography Wizard!!! Hahaha
As an American, I couldn’t count the number of times I yelled at the screen at Tom… Hilarious as always!
Petition to make these state drawings into a poster(s)
I like how Tom pronounces each state correctly.
“I think if you asked everyone around the world to point to Missouri… I think they would struggle”. You sir have a future career in comedy!!
That New York draw was PAINFUL
You did better than 95% of my fellow Americans would. Don't worry about those big central states. We call them flyover states.
Considering the entire American population? I’d say better than 99% at least
Tom's new nickname - "The Cartographer"
The Oklahoma panhandle should just become a new state named “Panhandle” since Tom forgot it existed lol

That is the WORST Louisiana I have ever seen Tom. It's a boot shape!
I've always thought of it as a thick L, for Louisiana. Helped me as a mnemotechnic for identifying it, I guess. But anyways, yes, that's a HORRIBLE Louisiana from Tom!
Never heard it described as a boot. I think calling it an L shape is much more memorable
Definitely NEWvada
Newta!
Love when he pronounces Michigan right then corrects himself and pronounces it wrong
A Certified Classic GeoWizard video 👌🏻
Iowan here - loved seeing Iowa as a perfect square, flawless execution
This is really impressive considering how confusing the state borders are! Good work, as a Brit I would do nowhere near as good as this.
The new state is obviously called Newtah!
Mr. Burns: "Slow down there maestro, there's a NEW Mexico?"
Honestly this is pretty impressive
when you started out with mini idaho i knew this video was going to be golden
As an Idahoan I laughed out loud at the baby Idaho you drew 😂
So, much of the original 13 colonies (the East Coast) got expanded West to the Mississippi and then chopped up into smaller states leaving all sorts of animosity in the wake. This is why I, a proud North Carolinian, all but cheered when you insisted on redrawing Tennessee as a dog turd for a second time. 10/10, would watch you attempt this again.
As a person that grew up in Minnesota, I can say that is how a lot of people who live in the south part of Minnesota would draw the state 😂
I love everything about 180-degree Utah
The lake is the pivot point
oh no Utah has rotated around is great salt lake axis!
Some unsolicited tips: Where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona meet, there is a monument called Four Corners.
The peninsula that you drew Delaware on is called "Delmarva" since it consists of Delaware and parts of Maryland and Virginia.
Hey now Missouri isn’t so bad 😂 I’d say the states around it are more obscure for sure but either way love the vids. This one had me cracking up!
Looks like Texarkana finally became a state.
the hardest part of this video is you ignoring the latitude longitude grid and not knowing that the 49th parallel serves as the us-can border
Why would anyone who's not American know that? I doubt most Americans do..
Utah had me crying laughing
I merely cried
If he mirrored it, his Utah and actually Utah would fit together like puzzle pieces
Don't think I've ever yelled at my screen in my life, until he drew those lips for Tennessee/Kentucky. I'm sure he'd get just as much of a hoot out of me trying to draw Europe tho
This was so funny!! I’m not sure I could do better and I’m a U.S. native. But oh, New York! You cut my city right out of existence!!😂
The fact that you knew where every state is in relation to its neighbors and major geographic features (except the Missisippi river and Ohio river, which are key borders, should have zoomed in and located those), and some rough shapes, is really impressive! Great job.
When you drew Oklahoma with no pan handle I died inside
I don't think I could even place 5 in the right spot, let alone draw their shape. Good job.
This is just proof that you need to have a roadtrip in TN! We love our state (and its shape...don't think you could forget it after a trip here lol) It's very long but also short...About a 10 hour drive from Memphis (Western border) to Bristol (Northeastern Border), but only a 3 hour drive from Chattanooga (southern border) to Clarksville (Northern Border). North Carolina is directly east from us and the southern and Northern borders are pretty much the same. We used to be apart of North Carolina, but the Smokey mountains basically act as the border between us now. Kentucky is our hat lol.
Great Wisconsin effort! You cut off the bottom and gave us some of the UP 😅
This was hilarious. Thanks Tom!!! Love it!!
New York was hard to watch
This is probably a lot better than a good amount of Americans would do
As an American, I do think this game is much harder than the Europe one because of the the lack of coastal borders for reference points. I also think the order in which the game chose the states was extra brutal, and if you could choose the order in which you did them it'd be much easier because it would be easier to work from the coasts in, again because those reference points are so necessary.
Although yeah as others have said, really could have taken better advantage of the Mississippi River.
But also I have a horrifically bad visual memory so I'm aware of just how much of a struggle something like this can be.
I'd love an episode with the English counties!
I couldn’t stop laughing when you drew Utah upside down 😂
straight line England, can't wait!!!!!
"New Oz", an imaginary state for very special wizard.
As a native Tennessean I want an apology
He will get to you after he apologized to the panhandle of Oklahoma and the entire state of West Virginia. 😂

You could rename this "British Guy Pretty Accurately Freehands the US States Better Than Most Americans Could"
As an Oregonian, i love when you mention us as your "favorite" state.
Oklahoma is pretty famous for it's cleaver shape; so that was the most entertaining for me.
I watched the entire video with the expectation of comparing with the original lines at the end :D
I live in Tennessee and I was waiting for your attempt at that one! Lovely video. The south gets a bit confusing I must say.
Between Indiana and Kentucky is GET INdiana. South of Illinois is West Get Indiana. You did awesome. Most Americans can't name the four constituent countries of the UK, let alone draw them.
Shout out to the 3.5 million or so people living in the no man's land between Illinois and Wisconsin...
That northern boundary to Illinois was pretty much bang on (even if the rest of the border was a mess), so it's funny to leave such a gap between the two states. If he'd trusted his Illinois border more, Wisconsin could have been a very high scorer.
Fond du Lac is now at the Wisconsin-Illinois border
Yeah I thought he was going to do well with wisconsin since it boarders the mississippi and his illinois northern boarder was good. Man was I surprised when he didn't even include Milwaukee lmao
surprised you didn't use rivers for borders more. the rio grande to figure out the border of texas and mexico, the colorado river for the arizona california border, and of course the mississippi give away a lot of the borders.
Yank here, and wanted to say nice job! I think you did better than probably 80% of the people who actually live here.
At least.
I live in southwest Virginia. When you drew Tennessee I almost choked on my tongue 😂
I'd be so interested to see someone that can do a perfect score on one of these.
Good job. I definitely couldn't draw the borders of Walthamstoweshire or whatever.
“Louisiana… it all comes flooding back.” Too soon, Tom! 😂
