Two Brits roll up to the Hamptons in a crap boat and try to sell it (How NOT to travel America #2)

After an eventful couple of days trying to navigate our way from Boston to Long Island and wangle ourselves a boat, we're now finally on the move. Since setting sail however, the boat has spent more time beached than it has afloat, and our inexperienced selves struggled massively with what felt like a very temperamental engine. In this episode we aim to make serious ground heading west through the luxurious Hamptons, but the battle with the boat would continue. Hilarious and heart-warming evening encounters with Long Island locals make up for another tough day on the waves.

Drop a like for Athena and Fernando everyone!
Fernando if you're watching this - it was a real pleasure to meet you. You're a lovely, funny guy with a bright future and you played a great part in our story, even if it didn't work out with the boat. I hope you don't find my over-sensationalised story telling too much 🤣
Athena - you're a saint and a sick bird (English for cool girl) What a firecracker of an evening we had together. Thank you for providing the fuel!

Trespassing isn’t the death sentence that some people like to claim America is like. Do those places exist? Yeah but hardly the majority of places. Most of the time, the worst thing that will happen is “hey, this is private property. Please leave”. And that’s it.
Athena is an absolute legend. Did you lads notice the American flags at half mast in honor of your late Queen?
@@leeartlee915 true. America has a lot of guns but most are law abiding citizens. It’s not legal to shoot trespassers on sight. Nobody wants to get life in prison for murdering two tourists.
@@Ojisan642 Well, some states have some pretty liberal “stand your grounds” laws but, yeah, not a lot of “random people shot for walking across someone’s lawn”.
*25:32** dude, what are you doing?* 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The Michael Jackson joke delivered in Tom's voice was very unexpected but fucking hilarious
10/10 joke, but sadly it would have been baffling to our American friends because they pronounce buoy "boo-ee".
Hahaha it was so unnecessary I laughed my head off
Yeah I burst out laughing.
@@zydn yes we do

Y'know Fernando pretended to take pictures and get out of there as fast as he could after seeing how bad the boat was 😂
Fernando thought that these were two damn rich guys since they were in the restaurant and he thought he might make the deal of his life lol
Literally as fast as he could lol
@@torben22.16he had to double check they meant $500 not $500,000 lmao
@@chriswyatt9869 he definitely envisioned these boats too 🤣 🚤 🛥️
Thing is, did Fernando run because he thought the boat was a deal and he was dreaming of fishing with his dad, or because he thought the boat was a POS like you guys think. $1700 POS. Aluminum boats like that shouldn't cost more than $650 and I'm thinking the motor $500.
I like how you wanted to be super safe to not do anything illegal and you manage to get an arrest warrant in episode 2 already lmao
Okay, nothing illegal, starting NOW.
It's all part of the challenge. USA is on Difficulty: Hard
Europe is on Difficulty: Easy
When I read that the Video was only at the point where they were heading to the train without a ticket so I thought id had to do some with that.... Turns out, it has not 😂
@@plippero7870 Hey at least they weren't trying to board a zeppelin...
But yeah, pissing on the street is kind of a no-no here. Some people have actually been put on the sex-offender list because of it.
Thing is, most places will allow you to use the bathroom no matter what. I'm guessing it was after bar closing hours and there wasn't a local 24hr CVS or whatever that they could use. I've been there.
@@sntslilhlpr6601 It's also just not that big of a deal in Europe, as long as you dont piss at someone's front door no one is gonna bother (and even if you do they might not). So he might have just not thought anything of it.
Bro, I'd be weak if two British guys in a boat sailed past me and just yelled: "Ahoy, there, the Queen is dead!" 😭
If that happened to me I would think about it every day for the rest of my life.
Yeah 😂😂😂
As a fellow brit in America, id be happy icl
Would be a complete picture if they were dressed all 17-18th century and were rownig the boat instead of motoring
Holy shit Fernando running back to work was the hardest I’ve laughed in a while, incredible guy and moment

For real 😭😭😭

Took me a while... But then I lolled hard.
I like to imagine Fernando was running away from the deal having seen the condition of the boat.
lol my dad did that kind of trip back in the 90s with all the backpack murders going on haha, used his trade as a brickie to eran money and stayed in hostels, would be cool to these lads do it would give me an idea of whats its like lol
So, two hour-long episodes in, and you've covered about 15 % of the distance. This is going to be a looong series! :D
Athena was amazing!
couldn't be better
This is probably the only thing that could get me to watch this much video of people failing to advance forward.
Have they managed that much? They did start from a negative after all 😂
i think its like .1%
For some reason I thought this was a three part series. I was wondering how they'd the rest of the trip into one more episode!
When they tried to haggle with the motel guy I lost it. You can't just haggle on hotel prices! That was hilarious. He just started walking away! Classic.
He sounded Indian as well - they would NEVER have got a discount from him!
You can though.. Many would rather you pay something than nothing.
EVERYTHING is negotiable in world. Everything
Yeah, I tried that and the price went up!
I've done this in Europe, and it worked. Sometimes.
People like Athena were the ones that made Europe so special, so she was a delight and man this Episode was another Banger, definitly on par with Europe so far the whole Series!
this just completely encapsulates owning a boat: temperamental engines, learning to read maps, and sinking money
That's why human powered boats are the only good option for water travel. Though 100 miles is a long way for any small craft, motorized or humanized. :-)
Also: you need to have at least the slightest inkling of what you're doing or you are shark bait...
Trim the thing, and your bottoming issues magically go away. Actually know where tf you're going, and your navigation issues magically go away... _Own a radio,_ and you might not be so worried about getting stranded...
I commend these guys for doing what they're doing and producing great content. But while it's fun to see people flounder a bit, it honestly too often gets to the point where it's just too much and it'd be nice for them to have _some_ idea of wtf they're doing.
Like they say.. Boat = Bust Out Another Thousand! 😬
@@R3TR0R4V3 Another great one I heard: The best day of your life is the day you buy a boat... The 2nd best is the day you sell it!
@@ElSkinsio hold on, shouldnt the day you sell it be the best and not the 2nd best?
I think the key thing about trespassing in the US is time and place. Middle of the day in the Hamptons is pretty much always gonna break your way. Middle of the night in appalachia might end in a different kind of way
Its also a big difference from the UK to the US, in terms of how land ownership is, id honestly find it more dangerous in the UK to trespass (or atleast its far easier to get caught) because here in the states, theres so much land, that often you would not even be near people to be seen trespassing,
Not to mention property lines are quite difficult to see in the US, when in the UK a lot of property is fenced off, and has shrubs to make the line quite clear, in the US its just a general "area" usually, so its easier to say "oh had no idea it was owned! Oopsie dasies",
Couldn't say which police force would be more damning to encounter though, with my time spent urbexing in the states, ive found police can actually be incredibly kind if you treat them with respect and kindness, while i often find british police will arrest you, if your committing the crime, despite, from what ive seen online atleast
Not even really Appalachia, but urban / dark alleys. I lived in the heart of Appalachia over half my life and I'd feel much more comfortable in someone's yard there than in a dark alley in Chicago.
Rural US you can usually trespass just fine if you aren't doing anything weird....if you're white.
I've run across lands all over the US and trespassed pretty consistently. I'm a tall white guy and I never have an issue alone. I have a mexican friend and we have issues together where I have to explain to folks that it's okay and they won't really listen to him. People are always suspicious of him. I've heard similar things from black and female friends.
Urban trespassing is a different thing though. The suspicion in the city is much more warranted.
@@CRneu for sure, urban trespassing is my strong suit, and it’s a harder more quick skill to have, a lot more about timing and speed than anything, because no matter what you do there’s always someone watching, race is definitely something to be conscious of, I’m a small white guy who looks way younger for his age, so people treat me differently than a person of color, I’ve seen it happen before.
Yeah, living in Rural America it's fairly uncommon for people to trespass because when everyone's strapped in a castle doctrine state, people have a bit more respect for personal property.
In actuality, the overwhelming majority of people aren't going immediately open fire on trespassers. They'll confront them while being visibly armed, have a chat, the person leaves, end of story.
That being said, it's still risky and trespassing in America should be avoided.
Fernando's sprint after viewing the boat was a moment of pure legend. What a guy.
He thought he was getting a yacht, once he saw the tin can he couldn't get out of there fast enough :D ;)
I’m sorry but love how that hard haggle blew up in their face.
“Oh we can’t pay that”
“Alright have a goodnight then”
“No, no, no, wait. We’ll pay it, please”
The funny thing is if they just said ok, the guy would’ve come out of the office and said wait pls don’t leave 😂😂
That’s how they haggle in India

@@JackMellor498 I thought Athena is a Greek goddess?
Athena is the Goddess of Wisdom according to the Greek mythology. She may not be a queen, but she's a goddess.
I'm from Long island, and I've been a boat mechanic for 8 years in the past.... that's one hell of a distance on that little boat. Athena is great, us broke long islanders are the nicest, the money people are hit or miss. You cannot negotiate with an Indian motel owner😄 that guy was quick to say goodbye.
That motel owner shutting that shit down quick was my favorite part of the episode.
he knew he had them over a barrel.
That’s how Indians negotiate… if you start walking away they’ll lower the price.
As someone with really severe anxiety who only wishes I could make friends this easily, your content helps restore my faith in humanity a little. It's easy to forget that a lot of people are actually very nice.
Awesome episode, Athena was the stand-out person in this one for me, really cool person. Wish she'd gone out drinking with you, she needed some adventure !

Stand out person of the episode for me was the hotel owner/manager who wasn’t taking any of their shit and hosed them for a last minute hotel room 😂

When the nostalgic sound starts, I know that I rather watch this than any other series that exists on Netflix or any big streaming website. You just have a talent for storytelling. This in combination with the format of the raw footage is simply unique, entertaining, and I'm looking forward to it each week. Thank you

Also, eeyyyyy, you share a name with the great lass in the video.
Lol when Fernando thought they were selling a 500k$ boat

I'd genuinely watch this for another 4 hours. Counting the days to "How NOT to travel from Sydney to Perth".
Is this actually something they considered? That would be awesome, although Australia is just one big desert, so don't know if that's even possible
*Sydney
Now that would be a fuckin jaunt
@@karolakkolo123 the could go down the coast to Adelaide then across the nullabor plain to perth for a straight line mission

Because of the lack of population density everywhere in Australia apart from (mainly) the coastal regions, that kind of journey probably wouldn't have enough human interaction for their style and pacing of adventures.
I am convinced Fernando was fighting for his life not to lose his job in this moment lol 35:40
Wading through great white shark infested water, trespassing, meeting Athena, getting pissed. What an episode. These two episodes have been so much fun. Looking forward to seeing more of this roller coaster of a journey.

This series is hilarious
With hearing the "bow the buoy" phrase I think I might be today years old to have stumbled on an origin of the "bababooey" XD
I'm sure Fernando went home super excited about the boat just to have his Dad be like what are we going to do with a boat? Even if you brought it to them in a trailer, they would need their own and a truck big enough to tow it in order to get it in and out of the water. Glad it worked out in the end though. Always a pleasure watching the problem solving and going with the flow on these videos. It's a great taste of adventure.
yeah maybe his dad just gave him a reality check and he could only have the boat if it came with a trailer. I think you cracked it.
This is it. Without a trailer the only thing he can do is flip it and who wants to try to flip that piece of crap.
Fernando is fabulous, and that running speed! Had me cracking up.
Been looking forward to episode 2 since the moment I finished watching episode 1. Got a nice big ol bag of potato chips ready, if this isn't a perfect Saturday evening I don't know what is.

Top Gear was a phenomenal show, even despite the soulless corporation behind it.

Athena was absolutely lovely, what a kind girl. Happy to see you met some friendly people along the way.
Tom and greg: the content you do is amazing. Not only you inspire hundreads of thousands (like myself) to go out there and explore the world, but seeing you spread your charm and energy to every person you encounter on your journey is such an amazing thing to see. Athena said it specifically, but you can see the same thing in every person you meet: theyre all caught up in their daily routine, and all of the sudden, and all of the sudden they meet two mad brits doing some crazy adventure, and it lights their spark, it gets them involved and makes them part of the adventure, and the same thing happens to us spectators. I think what you guys do is amazing, and i wanna thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Yeah, there's a kind of magic to it, like Tom and Greg are just strangers passing by who will change the lives of the people they encounter.
The part of the Hamptons you were in is mostly inhabited by people who are so wealthy they have a summer home that they use just a couple months out of the year, which is why it was so empty. But I’m glad you found some friendly folks along the way. I can’t wait to see what transpired in my state of Maryland 🦀

these types of journeys are my fave. As much as the geoguesser and wilderness trecking vids are awesome. This type of semi wilderness / urban city travel adventure is just unmatched. Meeting people getting into interesting situations seeing parts of the world that you wouldn't maybe typically see. Just great.
I love the straight-line missions, but this type of journey will always be my favorite!
