    *Update:* I normally neutralize glycolic peels by just washing my face with Kirk's castile soap (it's just a mild, soothing soap) and some cool water. I rinse it a lot to make sure I get it all off. The company I buy the peels from - they recommend either using a neutralizer (which you can buy) or rinsing the face thoroughly until all acid is off the skin. You can also use a mixture of 1-2 parts baking soda to 8-9 parts water to neutralize the peel. Thanks for asking about this Little Miss Fitness Chick! :)

    Hi Holly, great video!! Might be a silly question but using/ starting out on a 10 percent Serum is this good or will the other ingredients dilute the 10 percent glycolic? therefore not getting the full efficacy of the percentage? . If so would I be better getting a concentrated peel solution instead?. I'm on week two of applying 10 percent glycolic serum 3 times a week. Next week I would like to move up to 15 and do 2 weeks with this less frequent. Any advice would be much appreciated. TIA

    This video is so helpful ❤❤❤. I have done a series of peels by my dermatology for acne, like 7 years ago. So I know how helpful they can be. Unfortunately I don't know which strength. Now my acne is back, but I want to do them myself at home. As a prep I have used Neostrata peel pads 10% glycolic and use Adapalene and Azelaic acid 20%. I did a Glycolic peel of 25% for 2 minutes. I was red after the peel, but tomorrow my skin was ok. So now I am not sure for the next peel in 3 weeks probably, should I use higher strength or live the 25% peel for like 4 to 5 minutes? What do you think? Thank you.

I’m so self conscious that I just don’t even want to look in the mirror anymore! The avocado oil sounds nice. My skin is really dry. I just started using kiwi oil and I really like that. Crissy, thank you!!! Sorry to hear about the skin issues. It's not easy. I need to do more research to see if microneedling and/or peels are ok and recommended if you are dealing with rosacea. I've heard that products with resveratrol may help calm the redness. I used to have it as well and now I just tend to get flushed easily, but I don't really have the classic symptoms of it anymore. It's kind of expensive, but you may want to try a product called Succulent, from Good Face Stuff. It's the best moisturizer I've found for my super dry skin. I love it. Oils are amazing too - especially kiwi oil.

    Hi! How do you compare the glycolic acid peels vs the TCA peel? I haven’t used the latter but I love doing glycolic peels. Only problem for me is that I purge a little which makes me hesitate to do a full 6-8 peels for the best results. Love your videos! How are you not bigger???!

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  3 роки тому +21

      Thank you!🌼 Awesome question. I love them both. But, TCA peels really overhaul the skin faster than glycolic. I think you can have similar results with lower strength glycolic peels, but it takes a series of peels. Some studies I read said that TCA would give more dramatic results (in treating melasma) but relapses would occur. Glycolic peels worked better. I think it is great if you can do a TCA peel 1x or 2x a year and then maintain the results with glycolic peels and/or tretinoin. When I did my last TCA, my results were pretty dramatic for me but I don't think they lasted because I wasn't consistent with other peels. I hope that makes sense. 🌼

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! 🌺 From the research I've done, the expert recommendations are really different and vary a lot. It depends on how strong of a glycolic peel you want to do & how deep the MN treatment was. For me personally, I would wait about 7-10 days before doing a glycolic peel that is 30% or above. Some people might do better waiting 14 days. But, if I did a MN session that was mild for me - at 0.25 to 0.5mm only, then I may not wait quite as long. The reason I try to wait a while is because sometimes my skin is flaking and for a while after doing microneedling and I want to give it more time to normalize and don't want to overdo anything. You'll also get a feel for how your skin is doing while healing. For me, if I wanted to get rid of some excess flaking and it had already been at least 5 days since doing microneedling, I might use a low strength glyoclic product (toner or leave on treatment) that is around 5-10% and it can help get rid of the flakes, while not being too strong. :)

    I used to get peels on reg basis in my 30’s. I had acne in my teens, so peels, extract, steam, etc. all done in a great salon in San Francisco called “Georgina Acosta.” Once my skin totally changed for beautiful, I’d use her products at home, prep, peel and toner.
    Unfortunately, she’s no longer found anywhere. Been looking for for decades.
    Question: since it’s been so long since I had a peel, altho I exfoliate w/good products, moisturize, etc, am now 69 w/decent skin, am told I’ve beautiful skin, but need something more.
    Can I start with a 15 c 20% peel? PLS reply. Tks!

      Hi! Sorry to hear that about the results from MN. It can take a long time to see results (3-4 treatments). I read in a study that it can take 90 days for collagen production to occur from one treatment. So hopefully you'll get results over time. The 30% peel sounds like a great one to try! I've also had some success with mandelic acid helping with bumps and acne related issues.

    I am going to be in barking on glycolic 50%. I have done about 9 mandelic peels at 40% which has helped someone with pigmentation but I want to try glycolic to compare and maybe even lactic. I know you've done some TCA peels and those are by far probably the most effective but would you say that glycolic could be more effective than mandelic? Also, did you ever use glycolic under the eyes because that's the area I'm really trying to target. I've been using the mandelic under the eyes and it has helped some but not as much as I had hoped. I do realize it should be done for a very brief period to not burn the skin. I haven't really heard you mention lactic acid so I'm assuming you don't prefer that acid.

    • @LifeDIY

      Yes, for me I do glycolic under the eyes and I've found it to be more effective at treating lines than mandelic. I've found mandelic to help so much better with pores though. I would definitely give it a try if I were you. I also just recently started using lactic acid as well again. :)

      Hi Katie! So happy to hear that you're enjoying the 10% Glycolic from Good Molecules. I love their products. If it were me, and my skin is totally fine with that a few x a week. I would probably go a couple of weeks using it and then bumping it up. :) So, the next percentage is either 20 or 30. Some companies don't sell 20% so many people jump to 30% and when first trying it - to be safe - they may just apply it and leave it on for one minute. Then they can go longer each time.

    Thanks helpful information....got a question...how long should I stop application of tretinoin before a 20% glycolic peel? What's the after care of a glycolic peel for the next 3 days or so apart from religiously applying a sunscreen?

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jennifer! Thanks for the question. So I have researched this a lot and the answer varies based on so many things. For me personally, I would stop it it a couple of days before doing the 20% glycolic peel. But, that's only because I am not sensitive to 20% peels. And, I'd only do that if the tretinoin was not irritating my skin at all. If my skin was a bit irritated or peeling a lot and if I didn't do 20% peels regularly, or if more sensitive, then it would be better to wait 3-5 days. If I were using Tretinoin and if I was going to do a stronger glycolic peel, I'd definitely give it a few days or more. It will basically make the peel stronger than normal if the Tretinoin was used close to the time of the peel. It definitely takes some trial and error to figure out when to do it. My answers here are based on doctor recommendations from Realself.com :) and from my personal experience. I hope it helps! Sorry there's no real clear answer. :) For after care, I tend to use just really super hydrating and soothing ingredients. I prefer to use some hyaluronic acid mixed in with some avocado oil + I sometimes add emu oil as it seems to help with healing. Any non-irritating soothing products would be great to use. :) Also last week, I did a much stronger glycolic peel and I then put tretinoin on right afterwards (mixed 50/50 with lotion). I just wanted to see how it would impact my healing and to see how it might help my skin. I surprisingly didn't have much peeling and it's all healed up well now.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  2 місяці тому +1

      I don't thnk it should take too long to work up to that - it just depends on your skin and if it's sensitive or not. Some people are more prone to irritation when doing treatments on the upper neck area (I sometimes have this with some redness but it goes away within hours), but lower down I would think that it would be less sensitive. I'd probably start at 50%. For some people 60% may not be strong enough. If you ever need to make it stronger, you could do a multi-layer peel with glycolic + salicylic acid. It really boosts the strength of the peel. Just be sure to cleanse the area first and then clean it with alcohol before the treatment, for the best results! I too wish they had this around years ago. It's just recently (over the last 5+ years) become more known/popular. I think peels are incredible - especially glycolic acid, as there's no down time (just great results over time)!

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  3 роки тому +2

      That's a great question, Nina! I think the Platinum Skincare products are pretty straight forward with the effective, simple ingredients. The one from the Ordinary has some other ingredients in it as well, and their pH is 3.5-3.7. Upon looking into it further, the pH of the Platinum 30% peel is 2.1 (not intended for use with sensitive skin). So it is much, much stronger. I think if you get this done at a spa or with an estetician, they will likely use a lower pH peel as well. I am going to do some more research on this to see what the medical studies show - which products and pH are most effective. From the research I've done, I think the lower the pH, the harsher but likely more effective at getting results faster. I need to look into it more though. I still really love the Ordinary's Peeling Solution and it does seem pretty strong for a cheap drugstore product. I should have mentioned that one in this video, as it could be a good starter peel, though it may be a bit strong for some people. Also, I think the Ordinary tried to add some other ingredients to make it less harsh and I like their product a lot. But, I think people should be careful with other added ingredients (as they better be super safe) since they will get deeper into the skin because of the peel. I might end up doing a video on this later. :) Thank you!

      The first part of your message sounded great! But, I understand your issue. Sometimes you just need to let your skin heal for a few days. Retinols make the skin so much more sensitive. But, if you want to keep doing it, if it were me, I would use a spray bottle and spray the pad with some water and maybe even spray the face too prior to using the peel pad. I would not apply hardly any pressure since that too is exfoliating your skin. You could also squeeze some of the liquid out of it and then just spray it with some water. Then very gently apply it!

I was typing from my phone and didn't answer fully, sorry. I should have specified that there are times when I don't wear it. And, I think that periods of sun exposure are super important to our health and vitamin D levels. You don't just need to get the sun on the face though - you could wear a hat and try to expose the body to the sun as much as possible, at least for some periods of time. There must be some research on this. I really think it's important too. So I don't worry if I am briefly exposed and not wearing sunscreen on my face (unless I just did a peel or used something like Retin A). But, otherwise, lately I have been mostly wearing it daily with occasions here and there were I may forget. I hope that's what you meant and if not, let me know! :) I am curious as I know there are also issues and concerns with the ingredients in sunscreens. I only use a mineral one and I think I'm ok there. :)

      Thanks for the response. Yeah vitamin d levels as well as cell death from it causing free radicals on the skin when the sunscreen is exposed to uv light who knows tho lol I only wear mineral as well. Sometimes I think all skin cells need direct sunlight LOL I overthink

      Hi Sandra. It's kind of hard to say. I personally might just wait a day and then resume using it, but only if my skin isn't overly sensitive and seems fine. I did some research and it looks like sometimes these two products are used together to treat different skin issues.

    How soon do you use tretinoin after the peel?

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  3 роки тому +2

      Experts usually recommend waiting 3-5 days if it's something like 30% or higher glycolic acid. But, if just using a 10% or less, for me personally, I would feel ok using tretinoin the next day or two after. It depends on your skin too.

    You've also done a ton of other stuff to your skin though--- TCA, Microneedling, RF needling------various creams, diet----- It's hard to say how much Glycolic as been a factor in all of that. I like glycolic too----- but it gets hard to sort out what's causing the long term changes since you're also incorporating so many other treatments so often

      Thanks for the comment. In the video, I show results from 2014 to 2019 when I only did peels, mostly glycolic. So the results in the video are from that time period. I only started microneedling after that. TCA I haven't done too many treatments of - most are on camera and in my videos though and are recent. I've never done RF. So to me this was a good long-term experiment of sorts. I didn't plan on doing it but when I first did a peel, I really wanted to know if it worked so I took photos. But it's true other factors can influence my results and skin is always changing too and I'm aging at the same time.

      I did not clean my face with alcohol for the 50% peeling, nor did I exploitate days prior.
      I will next time though, I'm gonna try the 70% maybe 3 layers 10 minutes total.

    hey! I saw your videos about microneedling but before I go and use my dr pen, (because I am chicken shit and I will start with 0.25 to get the movements and handle of the whole thing before I go to 0.5) I read about citric acid, there is on google a report about it, also like 10 years ago there was this doc talking about citric acid on youtube and I thought is the safest than me doing a glycolic acid (again chicken shit), lol
    So I used today 50% concertation, and aside the pain in the first few seconds, my skin wasn't red, the pain left, I had on me 5 minutes, and then used a neutralizer. Thats it, no redness (again on MY face), no irritation, nothing. As you can see on my pic I have also white skin and sensitive.
    Do you have any info on that? have you ever read anything?
    What I read from this report on google with the title "Use of citric acid and low concentrations of alpha-hydroxy acids for superficial skin treatment", 50% citric acid concertation can be done once per month.
    I know this is a glycolic acid video, but maybe you have some info or knowledge since google has minimum information about 50% acid and doing it like once every 2 weeks.
    And why is better once per month. Anyway, thank you for this video. Your videos are the best and very helpful for me, especially when I will do the microneedling.

    How often do you do a glycolic acid peel ?

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Рік тому

      It depends on your skin type and the peel strength. But, for me, if I remember to do it, I can do a stronger one every other week. Otherwise I can easily do a lower strength one 1x a week and get great results.
