- I'm late to this, but I finally got around to hearing this interview with Leslye Headland and her comments about George Lucas and the Prequels. I don't think that anyone believes that George Lucas is the only reason Star Wars became as great of a movie as it is. There are so many creative people that made the movie what it is today. But one thing is for certain: There would be no Star Wars without George Lucas. She should show more respect.

The prequels, as much as I dislike them, I watched many times... There was a lot of fast forwarding involved, but there's still value in many scenes.
The problems with the prequels are minutiae details and forgivable misdirections. The problems with the sequels are nuking your entire story notes from Lucas himself to push an agenda and make the new emperor (Kennedy) a shiny new invisible suit of the finest silk!!! There’s NOTHING redeemable about them!!! If the worse thing about the prequels was Jar Jar Binks was annoying (and he IS the worse thing about the prequels- and can be mostly edited out!) then they’re MASTERPIECES compared to the remix crap we got from Jar Jar Abrams and Ruin Johnson’s crap on the fans and Luke and make Kathleen Kennedy happy while making nothing good. Lesley Headlamps contribution was to finish the job and Harvey the rotting corpse of the franchise and of fans dreams.

She’s not wrong though. Even the OT was heavily influenced by people other than George. His first wife Marcia, Lawrence Kasdan (ESB & ROTJ), and many others heavily influenced the original scripts and were key in reigning in Lucas’ more fantastical original ideas. His original treatment was pretty rough and it’s debatable that it would have even succeeded without their help.
I’m certainly not saying George isn’t a visionary but the idea he was solely responsible for the success of the franchise is wrong to the point of comedy.
I hear you. And I agree with that the success of Star Wars was a collaborative effort. I don’t think anyone believes that it was solely George that made Star Wars successful. But don’t forget that he also was trashed by fans over its failures. So it’s kind of a Captain of the ship kind of thing. It’s like this for any movie.
How many people sit down and actually read the credits at the end? When you quickly think about who made Jaws successful it’s Spielberg or Lord of the Rings - Jackson. No one mentions the artists, editors, or music score that much in conversation.
In the case of Star Wars, Lucas is more than a director. Star Wars just wouldn’t exist without Lucas. He’s the one factor that can’t be removed from the equation. The way she comes off disrespects that.
She says that’s the problem with the prequels. That they went to George for all the answers. So the prequels didn’t have the influence of concept artists, editors or John William’s music? It was as much a collaboration as the originals.
She points at the prequels, but I think it’s the sequels that are a mess because they didn’t include Lucas. Because they didn’t look to what came before to create something that fit. They needed to look for Lucas for answers on how it ties together. Instead the sequels are a hodgepodge of a trilogy.
