John Rubio and Grant Davis of The Beerists podcast saw some episodes of The Modern Rogue and were appalled at Brian and Jason's complete lack of alcoholic expertise, so they tailed Brian to his house and made us film them.

Probably a witcher reference
Kudos to The Beerists, especially the dude with the glasses, for keeping it real and factual despite the inane commentary transpiring around them.
😂😂😂😂
It's especially funny for those of us who listen to the podcast, cuz usually they're a lot more off the rails themselves. Though I will say, when it comes to the actual notes and tastes, even when they're drunk on their own show, they do make it a point to keep those things serious and genuine. But everything else is a wonderful shit show, highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed this video.
"Who'd have thought, Germans into purity" 😂😂
Ferrel Garcia I didn't get that at first holy moly.
Oh is THAAAT what they meant? I thought it was a joke about ducks.
Why would you think about ducks?
I had to pause, jesus :')
Thought they were talking about German pornography.
Even five years later, there’s just something magical about hearing Jason say “it tastes like caramel” with so much disgust in his voice
I've watched this like 3 times and I'm learning something new every time!! I just started working at a craft beer restaurant with over 100 taps with VERY little beer knowledge. I stumbled on this video in desperate attempt to do some research, The Beerists are my knights in shining armor! PLEASE do another!!
We did! Have you seen the others?
@@ModernRogue Only the "What to Look for when Ordering Beer" but omg I'll check your channel!
I don't understand how anyone can NOT like a dark Belgian ale. They are just so perfect.
St Bernardus is my fav beer of all time
"Ugh.. I don't like brownies'" Jesus, Jason.
LOL
jason walker *pumps shotgun*
He probably doesn't like Jesus either
I don't think any of them like women to be honest
analogdistortion Chocolate is so overrated. More boring than vanilla honestly.
I celebrate my own personal holiday every year with Founder’s Breakfast Stout, “Oktobreakfast”! It’s just drinking that beer, with breakfast and friends, in October. Spread my holiday, thanks!
I don't even drink and I enjoyed this. That's how you know you're a good entertainer.
Oh, man-- I'm so happy to hear that. We weren't sure if the episode would translate to folks who don't already enjoy beer.
Well, I work in a liquor store and don't drink. So I've watched a couple of your videos to bs my way thru the job. Thank you.
@@ModernRogue I'm just collecting all this knowledge until I'll be able to (legally) drink. Until then I'll be but enjoying the conversations.
Fully agreed. I've had a splash of whatever here and there (once every few years, avoided the "American Pilsners" mentioned in the video), so yeah, I don't drink, and yet, entertaining.
Hell, Scam School was entertaining and how I found Brian (in just the last couple months), yet that's literally all about getting free beers.
I honestly have just stayed away, though this video makes me go "wtf, why are these guys describing candles", but that's because I work for a certain scented candle company. I honestly didn't know all these notes you guys were talking about were in beers.
@@Tunkkis do I see gun jesus in your pfp?
I'm 14 and obviously don't drink, but my goodness! Y'all always find some way to make things that people normally can't or don't do and make it extremely entertaining! You're clean, funny, and relatable. Keep up the good work!
And now?
Pilsner Urquell is Czech, not German!
You're absolutely right! My brain went straight for good pilsners, and spaced on geography. Cheers!
We intentionally pour the beer that way to get the carbonation going and some good head on the beer. It agitates the beer and opens up the aroma, which is important for tasting. Plus we're using little tulip glasses. We don't really need to tilt it.
Paul Ferraro this. and i hate how they mispronounced gueuze. to be fair, my German beer section at the local BevMo has Primator (Czech), karlovačko (Croatian), zlaty bažaant (Slovak), and Балтика (Russian).
John Rubio plzen ancient Bohemia is where it is from so not entirely wrong because it was a Bavarian creator josef groll.
I said something before seeing ur comment 😂😂
10:55 is so true. Guinness was a no-go for me, but living in Ireland, it's almost frowned upon not to drink it. After a year or so on a warm summer's day I had a nice and cold Guinness and I really started liking it. So much so that I hardly drank any other beer for the subsequent 2-3 years. Now I'm more into a good IPA and if it's on a night out in a pub I'll go for light lagers (as I age I can't drink too many heavy-ish beers on a night out).
Fun fact: Roasted malts taste slightly like coffee and chocolate because coffee and chocolate get most of their flavour from being literal burnt seeds. Just like Roasted malts.
Second fun fact: The Reinheitsgebot is still in effect and Bavarian brewers are getting antsy because they want to add cool things to their beers, and french people are getting antsy because they think it's unfair and violates the treaty of Rome, or some shit.
Chocolate gets its flavour from theobromine and cocoa fat.
Fun fact: coffee beans aren't burnt, dipshit. They're also roasted. If you roast them too much, you burn them and then they taste shit.
Treaty of Rome???
"The Reinheitsgebot is still in effect"
An even more fun fact, no, it's not.
Just a little thing you should know as Beerists: Pislener Urquel is from the town of Pilsen in the Czech Republic. It's considered to be the world's first pale lager and the origins of the beer give name to the beer style pilsener! And to be honest, Weihenstephaner is not know for their pilsner but their wheat beers, their pilsener is not that common outside Bavaria. Warsteiner, Bitburger and Kronenbacher are the more common ones, in Germany that is. But keep up the good work educating Americans on European Beer culture.
I think I like the Modern Rogue better than Scam School.
Better hair cut.
Everyone does
What! Who really hates chocolate? Imfuckinpossible
Miss the spikes.
Jk, No way!
I've been drinking beer for years and trying as many different kinds as I can. This video is really helpful for that. Thanks guys! New subscriber to both channels! Next I'm gonna get into home brewing. I'm so excited.
I never liked beer until I tried ale for the first time. Beer is definitely very varied. If you don't like one beer, there is probably another that you will like.
Agreed.
Definitely. I dislike most beers except Czech beers like Staropramen and Zlatopramen. They are light, doesn't have much of that classical beer taste, and is very easy to drink! Czech beers get a lot of hate, but it is the only one I can drink and enjoy :)
Edit: Light American beers like bud light and corona (ik it's mexican) are also drinkable, but doesn't taste as good as Czech
I thought i wouldnt like beer, and i always thought id be a whisky type of guy. But i love me a Guinness
Oh absolutely, here in New Zealand the current flavour of the month is hazy ipa's which I've introduced to several people who "hate beer" and they've loved them
Been saying that for years. So many people are too close minded though to accept that notion.
"It says right here, 'brewed in a toilet in San Quentin'" 😂
New Modern Rogue episode! In which Jason and I discover just how uncultured we actually are when it comes to beer.
We learn about different types of beer, how to properly enjoy them, how to talk about them like we know something, and (most importantly) learn what a beer suicide tastes like. (I am grimacing even as I type these words).
Hopefully you'll be ever-closer to perfecting the "gentleman" aspect of the Modern Rogue after watching. -BB
The Modern Rogue hi hi hi say
The Modern Rogue greetings from Belgium :-)

Host of The Beer Metal Show Podcast here. Just saw this video for the first time today, all thanks to The Perfect Pour Podcast. On their most recent episode, they talked about this particular video, so i was interested so here I am. Great video. Very informative and funny. I am a regular listener to The Beerists for the past few months. Cheers everybody! BeerMetal.net
Murphy doesn't like chocolate and Shwood can't eat fruit. What the hell is going on, here?
A Gueuze can be awesome or really foul, depending on how you look at it.
An American stout can be completely overpowering if you can't handle the bitterness.
this isn't what he was talking about
i fully agree with Murphy, food... STAY OUTTA MY BEER!
unless your dipping your fenchfries in your IPA, thats pretty good lol
@@matthewgustafson111 fries in ipa? For real? Get me whatever you're smoking, i wanna try it
Host guy was in this was awesome!! This is such an informative video, especially due to the lack of beer related content for beginners on youtube in 2023. Lots of small channels scattered here and there, but they all treat you like advanced enthusiasts and expect you to know all this stuff already, which is so frustrating as someone just getting into beers!
"who would have thought. germans were into purity" HAHAHAH so dark
The Germans definitely didn’t want it to be dark.
@@officialharvard751 oof
@@officialharvard751 Didn't want it to be czech, polish, latvian, lithuanian, or russian either.

Welcome to the insanity!
"Furthest away" instead of farthest... thank you John lol.
That Bourbon County Stout is incredible
The energy felt weird at the beginning but alcohol did its thing. That confidence juice
Just found the goose island stout after these 3 years of knowing of it and holy sheet friends. So good! Thank you Rogues and Beerist. Haha
Please do more beer episodes! Those guys are so entertaining!
modern rogue finally starting to get the recognition it deserves, you guys are killing it. keep it up
Thanks!
I had an Imperial Stout with Jalapeno in it. It tasted like brownies but burned in more than an alcohol way...
I *love* the heavy, impactful tone that slams down with the imposing font of the *REINHEITSGEBOT* *LAW* every time the magical incantation is uttered. It's like an evil wizard's cantrip, it will crush one's soul and banish you to an eternity of pain and torment roasting in the sin-scorching holy flames of the ethereal plane.
i. cant. stop... recently been glued to all your videos, all the way back to your old school magic vids haha. yall are great entertainment and education! yes. yall. im southern so what. haha. keep up the good work !
Thanks so much!
As someone from belgian who knows a bit about beer in western europe this video made me cry
Understanding beer but every time they say beer the bee movie plays but ever time they say bee the entire godfather trilogy plays but every third word the entire Modern rogue playlist plays but every time they say "WOAAHHH" The entire understanding beer video plays
Breakfast stout sounds right up my alley.
Yes! So excited to see the Beerists in here!
love these "Understanding x" my favourite videos of your's. Have watched them all several times.
Brian and Jason should definitely try Mead! My personal favourite! Maybe even make an episode on fermenting it...
😂 “it like being in a medieval tavern ready to slay everyone” Yeah but It also goes well with pancakes 😂 good show guys I love this episode I love the complexity that you guys give beer 🍺 my wife and I are beer enthusiasts we have also started doing our own brewing as well as making mead I think it’s really awesome to see someone else that takes it so serious beer is really an art you really see that when you start brewing your own wort and fermenting it. It’s awesome keep it up 👍
Dude I'm having a beer watching this and feel like I'm part of the group! Great video!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Brian's and Jason's reactions to the gose and the imperial stout. Stouts are my go to and the heavier, darker, and higher gravity the better. What John said about imperials, "you should not finish one of these by yourself", made me question a few things because I have finished many a bomber of imperial stout in a night all by myself! And I decided I loved every sip and John is wrong about bombers of imperial! For science I'll add that I also love strong black gourmet coffee, 2 or 3 cups a day. I just put a dash of cold water in my coffee so I can drink it right away!
I had no idea Abt 12 was 10% when I first had it. finished a big bottle watching TV and then only noticed I was wasted when I went to stand up. such a good beer
HA! Yeah. It will sneak up on you.
The irony of Grant instructing anyone how to taste a beer is not lost on me. How far he has come.
Fake it until... well, I haven't made it past that step yet.
Great job going from 60k to 150k in a couple weeks! Love your channel!
Thanks! Help spread the word :-)
“You should never drink a whole bottle of this beer (imperial stout)” 👀
I live in Michigan and this place is just lousy with good breweries. The breakfast stout from Founders is pretty good, but their oak barrel aged Scotch ale called Backwoods Bastard is, by far, the best beer I've ever had. It's strong, it's sweet and syrupy, and it's got great flavor. I prefer dark beers, so it may not be for everyone, but I highly recommend it.
Speaking of dark beers, the color I look for is the foam. Dogfish head makes (or made) an imperial stout called Miles Davis Bitches Brew. My wife made fun of me, saying I was drinking soy sauce.
I love how Rubio lifts his beer up to the light. It's like he's lifting it to the heavens as if to say, "Look unto me, my brothers! I have BEEEEERRRR!!!"
what kind of a psychopath doesn't like chocolate?
Right?
Whenever somebody makes a comment a bout chocolate all I think bout is that grandma from sponge bob
Yeah, it’s food for the soul or something...
Sometimes it's too rich and overpowering.
Hate chocolate? Get outtahere!!
Currently studying for my Certified Cicerone, really enjoy watching others taste various styles and see what they interpret.
My favorite beers?
Schlenkerla, Focal Banger, Heady Topper, Moralite, Yukon Midnight Sun Espresso Stout, Heart of Darkness and Mexico's Bohemia.
My mouth started watering just reading your comment.
I love how Brian talks about slaying people in a tavern and Rubio just adds on "also it goes really well with pancakes" XD
You and The King of Random are quite the combo lmao
Just turned 21, this is great, thanks!
Love the education and production and selection.
Shout out to the misnomer of what IPA actually means.
John, you know your stuff for sure. I couldn't think of a better range of brews.
I loved this video. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words!
Oooh what's the misnomer if IPAs? Don't we owe the style to Sir Francis Danken?
hes wrong about IPA by the way
@@akfourtysevn yeah, he is
Apparently (3:00) it means "Indian Pale Ale" -- although the bottle pictured would seem to differ on this point.
I didn't learn all too much since I'm a decently experienced beer connoisseur but I had so much fun watching this! Comedy gold!
"now we are experts, and alcoholics" 😂
I love watching these so I can justify my alcoholism as a refined hobby rather than a debilitating vice.
"There are a lot of great pilsners from Germany, Pilsner Urquell is one of them." It forms Czechia, but haven't expected much from a youtube video about a beer
Instantly caught my ear as well. Shame on these guys for not recognizing the original pilsner as Czech. Love from Finland.
If you go down a few comments, John Rubio actually amended that a few years ago :)
@@charlesballfuller6404 if you have to amend it later, it's still wrong.
In regard to pilseners, it was my understanding that the only true pilseners came from either Belgium or the Czech Republic, kind of like the only true champagne is made with grapes from the Champagne region of France.. Anything else was just made in the pilsener style.
Edit: Speaking of taking a few tries to clue into some beers, I've been gaining an appreciation for darker and darker beers over the last few years. My first experience with a Guinness was back when the darkest thing I'd drink would be a Yeungling lager. I gave it a few shots, but it was entirely off-putting from the first three sips. Fast forward three years, I've started trying and enjoying some things like Sam Adams cream stout, so I give it another shot over a pasta dinner and it immediately became my favorite companion to a good fettuccine alfredo. It's amazing how our tastes change over time.
Yes, Jason, that shark thing is a real thing. Iceland is a crazy place.

I love the contrast of how Brain makes faces, winces, and recoils from the idea of a slightly funky beer, acting the way a child does when you try to make them try something new.. but at the same time, following ScamSchool for years, you know he'll happily put fire and light bulb glass in his mouth. You are a very contradictory young gentleman.
If you live in Belgium, you learn to like that kind of strong beer before you're 25 haha ^^
Beer with lots of flavours and alcohol %, god I love living here x)
WOW. Loved the video and crew. Homemade beer since June 2011. Only way to drink beer now.
Had my first Goose Island Stout recently. Kind blown! So thick, delicious. Full disclosure...I drank the entire bottle by myself.
17:43 is one of the lightest "I'll be damned if you're not right." XD
Fun fact: Pilsen, the city the pilsener has been named after and was invented in, isn't even in Germany, its in Czech Republic^^
Wow, I make beer but didn't realize how well versed I was in it. These guys make it fun to watch and talk about. Great episode guys!
thanks!
"It says here, 'Brewed in a toilet in San Quentin.'" XD
I often find myself singing random beer drinking songs in my truck as I go down the highway.
Grant Thompson brought me here. Your content is keeping me here. Subscribed.
todd collings check out Scam School as well.
WiIl do! thanks.
Welcome!
awesome!!
I love rewatching this episode every blue moon
The joke about germans and purity made me laugh so hard😂(I'm german btw)
**phew** was afraid that'd be over the line :-)
I've drank something similar as that last beer all by myself, but I did pace myself and took something over an hour to drink it. The way the flavors shift with temperature is another point of interest with those kinds of beers for me.
I hate when people say things like "german pilsners". The word "pilsner" is from Pilsen which is city in Czechia. The term originates from brand of czech beer (yes, czech beer NOT german) called Pilsner Urquell which wash the very first beer of this type. Pilsners are NOT german.
Pilsener was copied from Pilsener Urquell and later adopted in Germany. The word Pilsener is nowadays a beer style in germany, while the only remaining pilsener from czechia is the original Urquell.
So saying german pilsener is completely alright. Have you ever heard of french fries? - spoiler, they are from belgium :)
@@matz4k Firstly, there are dozens of breweries making pilsners in Czechia.
Secondly, have you ever hread of cultural appropriation?
Finally, the word pilsner is a beer style in many countries, not just in Germany. It changes nothing that it is in fact czech beer the same way as Lambic is Belgian beer even if made in Indonesia, or Gose is German beer even if made in New Zealand.
By the way if you call yourself "fries expert" and claim that french fries are french you are just a fool.
I love Samuel Adams Boston Lager, especially when I have lunch or dinner. I tried Samuel Adams New England IPA the other day and it made my taste buds feel like I was in heaven.
12:45 A long time ago without the technology we have today, you could only brew some certain types of beer during certain seasons because of the temperature requirements.
Temperate for beer matters quite a deal. It will change the taste by a great amount.
I don't know why it's so entertaining to watch people drink and learn about things I can't legally drink yet. On the other hand though, I'm going to know far more about alcohol than is really necessary by the time I'm actually legally old enough to drink it.
My parents are also probably going to start watching me very closely out of fear of underage drinking when they notice my UA-cam recommended is stock full of alcohol videos.
A beer expert not knowing Pilsner Urquell is from Czech Republic. Strange...
I was thinking the same thing, but in 1842 the majority of Pilsen was German speaking, and the man who brewed the first pilsner was Bavarian. It still isn't a German brewery though.
goaram he explained in another comment it was a slip of the tongue
First video Ive from this channel. Very educational and funny. gonna binge watch your channel now.
What 5 years have done to Grant. He used to think half the beers they had on the show tasted like hot dogs.
Really enjoyed this. As a man and english that makes me an automatic expert in beer, no? Just kidding, it's great to hear these prespectives and hear these (awesomely knowledgeable) comments on the beers.
The Beerists should do a youtube channel. Let them know!
I don't do podcasts, but I would definitely watch their videos of they made a channel.
Hands down one of my favorite videos of all time
"been drinkin this stuff for years... I heard they added more hhhhhops."
"Who would have thought? Germans and impurity." I lost it hahaha. Brian I love you
my favorite beer is Augustiner Helles... it just tastes amazing
PZ.tv I'll look for that!
Jason Murphy it's from a traditional upper Bavarian brewery actually owned by monks... I'm not sure whether they export it but I hope you can find it... it's really good
The germans know how to brew beer. I love Beer from north germany
North German beer is a lot more bitter. The best example is Jever. Most bavarian or south german beers are made from weed. They are sweater than in north germany.
Everyone who likes Augustiner should try Tegernseer Spezial. Unfortunately it's basically impossible to acquire, they make so little of it.
The thing about why you want IPA's fresh explains why my favorites are locally made (Laughing Dog Brewery)... it does possibly help too that we grow a LOT of hops in this area.
All of these people could be the product of a three-way with Jon Favreau, Richard Blais and the singer from Smash Mouth
This is the best feedback ever
My UA-cam channel is basically this: trying different beers and getting hammered in the process. I'm gonna have to check out the Beerists, it sounds like the perfect podcast for me.
This was amazing, and I had the biggest grin on my face the entire time.
Why hasn't this been in my recommendation before now? I love beer, Modern Rogue is good. Should have gotten this sooner... then again I didn't drink 6 years ago.
I like it how Brian and Jason replies to everyone's comments A.S.A.P cause not a lot of UA-camrs does so.
I know this is the Covid times but I really enjoy these how to appreciate (insert X) episodes. Beer, whiskey, cigars. Want more.
This video has my mouth watering. I'm trying to find where I can get a St. Bernardus Belgian Quad.
Depends on where you live. If you're on the west coast, there's plenty being sold at beverage stores.
A_Transposition_Error SAAAAAAAAME
I'm from Chicago, and though I can't drink beer myself, my dad was drinking the Imperial before, and I can attest to it the scent, it's fucking strong.
Everything is spot on here, just 1 recommendation: pouring beer correctly in a glass can improve the taste and the final effect of it. You wanna get rid of extra carbon dioxide added as a preservative to bottles and you wanna make a good foam head. This way you know you are tasting those awesome beers at their full potential. Anyways this was a great video!
First time I've come across this channel and any of the people in the video. It's really good, you talk about the beer with respect and it's cool seeing people trying styles for the first time. Have subscribed. Keep up the good work
Thanks to these fellows, I'm totally into sour ales now... Damn you, beerists. Do you know how hard it can be to find a new sour ale?^^
I don’t know how I did not see these guys. Plus the beerist ! I am loving the detail and the conversations. Very easy going and casual. I like that it helps people take a real look at beer. I made a few on beer to help people venture out. I love beer and it is phonaminal to find other avid beer lovers.
Jason makes me laugh my face off. Subtlety he says "Yeah, I don't like brownies" and everyone else just pretends to not hear him. I feel ya Jason, not a fan of brownies or chocolate stouts.
