The bull bar is about as heavy and as the new Suzuki Jimny. You could put a Jimny on the back as part of the luggage and use it as a life boat.

mogs of old always had the driveshafts inside of tubes and the tubes were pressurized a few pounds via the onboard air to keep water/mud ingress from happening.

Ronny, since you announced the fact you were going to be reviewing a "Mog" I've been hanging on every UA-cam alert!
I LOVE your channel. Living in Scotland, I'm a bit of die-hard Land Rover fan (series 1 86" & several 300tdi discoverys). Parts and vehicles are cheap and plentiful (Discos at least.)
I love your 79, however we don't get them in the UK. The exhaust note is peachy! Truly enjoy seeing the progression of modifications.
Getting back to the review; if I could find reason or justification (or just an excuse) to buy a Unimog, I would. Fantastic bits of engineering, I'll always dream........
thank you so much for your dedication and commitment to you channel,
    Best regards.

Hi Fraser, I'm a Land Rover fan also and live in Western Australia. I have a 3.9 V8 manual Disco 1, Range Rover Classic and a Range Rover 4.6 HSE P38. Like you i've been hanging out for this review and also like you, if I could justify it, I would buy a Unimog also :-)

Sir_Forsaken g'day I'm in WA too. just got my licence last year and the old man's pushed me down the one life live it road owning a disco 2 td5. I was just wondering where you go for parts. I know abut rover craft and barbagellos but sometimes they don't have what I need.

    • @sir_forsaken1857
      @sir_forsaken1857 7 років тому +1

Hey mate, believe it or not I get a lot of my parts from ebay. When I can't get the bits i need there, I use my local land Rover specialist "Whyatts" who are pretty good for a lot of stuff albeit sometimes a bit on the expensive side but probably not as expensive as Barbagellos or Rovercraft. The guy who owns it "Steve Whyatt" is a great mechanic and very very knowledgeable, especially on the TD5. He was one of the first to discover that the newly released TD5's had a problem of engine oil getting into the wiring harness and running down into the ecu box and updated LR who made changes. Your dad started you off in a great vehicle but, and this is the big but, you MUST maintain it properly and if maintained you'll have an awesome off-roader. Me and a mate have just started a YT channel called "noobs off-road" for a bit of fun, send us a message on there :-). I apologise for the naughty word that "big shauno" uses on the intro hahahaha

Portal axles aren't just for ground clearance. The down gearing in hub allows for the gearbox and transmission to operate at a higher RPM for the same power and wheel speed. I.e. less torque stress on the drive-train for the same torque at the wheels.
Downsides: Increased overall weight, increased un-sprung mass, cost, increased axial moment on axle compenent, noisy af even with helical cuts!

    • @yorkchris10

I maintained a mog for the first 4 yrs of my trade and you said everything I was thinking.
They're on the edge of being a recreational 4x4, it's just lucky they are so bullet proof. I've seen so many couples that wouldn't be able to change a tyre or do most repairs due to the size.
The hubs are designed to be the part that would break. A quick repair provided you have spares and are able to lift them.

Buddha Mack one thing that blew my mind with these things at work is how hard they are to break, our fleet consisted of defenders, hiluxs, sprinter 4x4s and unimogs, all of the aforementioned died and broke after 10 or so years of hard service, the unimogs there are still 40 year old ones with 50,000 hours just laughing

The origin of the unimog lays in post war history... the need for a machine that could do field work as good as fulfill the transportation needs triggered two brothers to come up with the concept. Mercedes saw the potential and bought the idea... thats where the Mog started. The name UNIMOG is the german acronym for Universal Motor Machine (Utility). The Mercedes Tractor - actually is a different product line and came years after the Unimog was already established.

unimog is the best no qn, in my country this was once the mainstay military transport for many years. This vehicle can travel up jungle terrain hills w 60 degree angle slopes on crumbling loose gravel roads with big pot holes, very hair raising ride but it will do the job eventually. German engineering strong and reliable.

    Hey Ronney,
Love the vids keep them coming, your a legend all the way in South Africa too. In WA so always looking to follow in your footsteps. Just a thought for us guys with a basic 4x4, not to many mods like lockers and winches. I'm sure we would all love those things but its on a long awaited bucket list. At the moment its a modest 80 series. Would be great to get how to camp out on a budget kit and 4x4 kind of thing. I know a few guys with families who would love to get out there but talking around the camp fire some are hesident thinking you need all the equipment and mods.
maybe whats must have basics and how to get out there budget style and still be safe.

Gotta be rich to buy AND run one of these things but man, that would be a life. A landship if i ever saw one. And would wanna be if it cant do much more than 90k/h on the highway. Note that these ones usually don't were very much under this relatively light truck. These are make to carry a 20 ton truck by 4 tires and can easy be redone after 60 k miles to do the same again. Redone means thread is cut.

The six cylinder OM366 and smaller 4 cylinder OM364 series are legendary engines, big solid lumps, completely unbreakable, developed and improved by Mercedes for over 40 years until the cost of meeting emissions guidelines was too costly for the design. They still make variants of these magnificent engines at the Mercedes plant in Brasil.
