    How do the portal axles handle these speed increases?

  • @fosteringadventure
    @fosteringadventure 3 роки тому +3

    I notice that the tires on this Mog look like the Michelin XZL tires. I have the 395/85R20 version on my truck and Michelin’s maximum speed limit on these tires is 55mph, or 90kph. You should be careful to point this out to customers, as there could be a liability issue for you if there is a tire failure at higher speeds.

      Approx $10,000 supplied only, but that doesn't include any other parts you discover as you pull things apart.

    I suppose you can not gear it to at 2200 rpm to do 100 kms hour or that take to much off your low range first gear. By law you can only do 100kph at that weight

    Unimog and speed is nonsens. Why ? The axel reductions who make the axle higher, out of the midlle can't handel the heat, have only 25 cc of oil, that makes a mist and damp after long stretches of road at high speed. The oil leaves by the airvent in the axle and never returns to the reduction box. Less oil, more heat, more friction and damaging everything inside, bearings and axle. The bearings have no inner ring, so the axle is donne. The whole thing cost a lot of money.; Solution ? an oil return thing with some expansion vessel and looking glass for the oil contense. And, I made " free wheels " on the front axle where the most risk is for the probleme. On the high way one dus'nt need all the friction in the front axle to the gearbox. A standard Unimog has a max rpm dieselpump of 2800, because in the army everybody drives something that's not to be payed out of their pocket. I have put the thing on 3200 rpm. Not for speed but the gap between 7th and 8th gear. It's a lot of work schifting gears and in the time that it takes , the rpm go's down, for sure when it's a bit uphill. So, to have the turbo doing it's job, we have to stay as high as posible above 2400 rpm. I have a bigger radiator with electric fans and a thermostat to loose no hp with all those belts that can snap and that metal fan that can be used for a airplane and I have an extra outside oil cooler with a thermostat and fan, because the engine has to be warm as fast as posible to not spoil the climate too much, but not overheating and I drive on recycled bio diesel to forcome the moment that governements will forbid to use fossil fuels for privat use.... 🙂

    • @unidanengineering
      @unidanengineering  3 роки тому +3

      Hi there, all new model Unimogs come with the ability to travel at 100km/hr at 2350RPM (speed limited to this). However, we can order them from the factory with high speed axles and get 100km/hr at 1900RPM.

      That's fine if you dont do any road travel or dont mind traveling at 90Kph (a.55mph) at redline.
      My pick, provided the money is not an issue, Swap to 46"x20" wheels + new CW&P + working set + maybe power upgrade. Win everywhere (except wallet).
      Better road speed and/or economy (depending on how hard you push it).
      Better off-road ability (better Grip, approach, departure and breakover angles).
      Better general ground clearance, river fording height, better Sand/Mud/Rock climbing ability etc etc etc.
      Only downside is the extra $$$. You can keep your Unimog Purist attitude and struggle on the road, stay off very soft sand, fail hill climbing, etc.
      The Unimog is an excellent base vehicle. But the older ones (ex defence force ones from the 70's and 80's) can definitely be improved on now.

    I was watching a youtube video awhile ago where Larry Perkins ( Aussie race car legend ) had a U 1700 and made an overdrive kit for it. I sent an email to Perkins Engineering asking if the kits were still available and sadly they are not being made anymore but they do still have the plans for them. Maybe you could do some sort of deal with Perkins to get a batch made and run both the Perkins overdrive and the crown and pinion upgrades to get the revs even lower.
    Also what is the Black dual cab mog at the front of your building in the video? I was unable to find any info on it on your website. Cheers

    I was [retty impressed the difference the high ratio diffs made to fuel usage on the way out to the owners weekend recently compared to the standard truck that was with it on the trip. Towing a trailer and still used less fuel. And then still had no drama in the extreme offroad driver challenge.

    Why did Mercedes Benz remove the option of increasing the speed of the Unimog trucks? Did anybody ask them? Is it a safety measure? These are Off Road Farm Tractors on 4 equal sized wheels with trays and extensive hydraulic systems. Designed to run on highways at a maximum speed of 90kph.
    Every Australian farmer understands the value of Creepy-Crawly slow speed gearing. It is a farm tractors that can be driven on the road.

    • @unidanengineering
      @unidanengineering  2 роки тому +4

      The only reason that the ex-ADF Unimogs are limited is because of the way that they were ordered by the Australian government. All new Unimogs are computer speed limited to 100km/hr due to the NHVR. The speeds gone in the video are just a test of the system that we installed and definitely not a recommendation. 100km/hr is safe and comfortable for both these upgraded vehicles and the new Unimogs.

    Unimog make versions with 'high speed axles'. No portal axle though in the high speed version probably due to performance issues, heat, wear and tear.

    I actually used to drive 1B35 which had hi speed diffs fitted for the rally! It used to pull about 130 kmph but was a bit gutless with a load

    • @unidanengineering
      @unidanengineering  2 роки тому

      It's definitely been interesting the experiment with these and see how they go in different situations. We find the hi-speed diffs to be better than the Overdrives when it comes to hills and or towing/with a load as the overdrive felt like it took the power out of the vehicle (gutless) whereas the CW&P seems to hold higher speeds better over crests and whilst towing etc.

      @@unidanengineering You guys still seem to be the best operation around. But, when I look at Mogs going slow in all the other videos, I will not be able to have a direct comparison with wheel size, and knowing if they have a working gearbox or not, and if the idle speed is the same, and the videos will be apart in time. Kudos to you for pointing out that the axles are way too fast for rock hopping. You don't have to take advice from every random on UA-cam comments, and you are super successful. I am about to attempt to land at Geosurveys Hill in a very small aeroplane, so not a potential customer yet.
