Why are we not talking about how great the Beauty and the Beast film seemed to be artistically/ historically. They looked like they really made sure it was accurate, and selling the music box because of taxes is great for a bit of history.
That's what they should've done for the Live Action remake so it wasn't exactly like the animated version (or maybe people would just make comparisons to Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast...)
It is more accurate to the original, but not quite. There was no aunt and her sisters were spoiled brats, like Cinderella step sisters lvl of spoiled brats. He became poor because of his ships being destroyed at sea. Basically causing today's equivalent of 100s of 1000s of dollars in losses as he was currently betting his entirely stability on those ships. I like the original version and read it to my kids, but the disney version is more entertaining and dramatic.
According to Jeffrey Katzenberg, he felt the movie was "Way to dark and serious and didn't felt like a Disney movie half the time." Let me remind you, this is the same guy who wanted Toy Story to be "Darker" and "More Edge" and stole Pixar's idea with Antz. Hypocrite much?
If you watch the Barbie as Rapunzel, you can clearly see where Disney took the majority of “inspirations“ for Tangled. Because of these elements here: “lost princess“, “ lizard companion“, “princess who paints“, are not in the original tale, where the main character is just a commoners girl. but are all present in Barbie's movie that came out years before they started to think of the current version of Tangled, it's rather convenient that people praise Disney's originality where they probably took many things from this movie. Also, I have my theory that they also took many elements from the Magic of Pegasus for Frozen, but hey it's Disney they can do whatever they want.
Barely anything from disney is original. Even their DCOMs (Twitches and Cheetah Girls were books, High School Musical was an actual musical, Zombies was originally a failed tv show, and Phantom of the Megaplex.....well that ones obvious)
They kept some key points. The core message of Frozen "only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart" is directly taken from the fairy tale ie "love can melt away the ice in one's heart" - Gerda's true love is what finally melted the ice in Kai's heart. They even paralleled the notion that Gerda's tears, crying as she embraced Kai is what did it, meanwhile Elsa was crying as she embraced Anna. Another thing is Kai and Gerda were siblings, Anna and Elsa are siblings. What's ironic is in this sense, the final film ended up being closer to the original fairy tale. Originally at the start of Snow Queen/Frozen, Elsa was meant to be a villain. It's only once Let it Go was composed that they realised they couldn't give this song to an antagonist. I personally believe that is where there are certain ambiguities in the film, and certain aspects of the story that didn't tie in as seamlessly as it should've.
Their original plans for Frozen are absolutely better than what they ended up going with. Nothing happened in Frozen; it was a fetching mission. Evil Elsa looked like an amazing character.
I would almost wish that these scrapped ideas would be turned into something like a Disney+ series. A What if the story went differently kind of thing. Especially the original Aladdin.
Bro, that could actually be an amazing idea. They could pretty much remake the original versions of their films (like Kingdom of the Sun or The Snow Queen), while not really messing with the canon of the actual movies. Disney would still profit from the nostalgia of the originals (instead of doing more live action remakes). Hell, they could even bring back 2D animation for the series. Just...God....the possibilities, man!!! Too bad they’ll never do it tho
Elsa could have easily been one of the most complex characters and probably one of the best Disney villains in a long time , had the filmmakers not strayed so far away from Hans Christian Andersen's story just because it's dark and the queen herself is rather ambiguous as to her intentions. I find it rather funny that Disney was ballsy enough to adapt Victor Hugo's work but found Andersen's story too dark for a Disney film.
I literally had a part where I randomly segwayed into "The Lottery Starring Bette Midler!" with a clip of the MGM footage...but it just ruined the tone of the segment sadly.
Thanks for these videos. My six year old is really getting into drawing war scenes. Particularly modern military attacking Medieval castles. He was frustrated because his drawing always end up unsatisfactory in his opinion and in the trash. He was getting seriously worked up over it! So, I had him watch some of these videos so he could see how even professional artist end up scraping lots of hard work. He was super fascinated by the videos and (surprise surprise) is back to drawing tanks firing missiles at castles.
Man I wish they’d kept Aladdin’s mom in the final movie. It would have made his motive so much more inspiring and heartfelt. I love the final movie but that always bothered me that he just did things for money. The mom just sends and even better message about doing things for the people you love.
Oh man, having Aladdin's mother be part of the story would have added a whole new depth to it too, and I actually like the continuation of the "Arabian Nights" intro theme as a narrative element with the narrator revealed as the Genie (as many have speculated he may have been), though I'm glad they made Jasmine less spoilt and I think the decision not to give Aladdin more friends in his origin was a good idea, I just feel like it'd have made him more sympathetic if he was struggling to provide for his dear old mother as part of it.
Also I would’ve LOVED to see Rapunzel: Unbraided. That idea sounds really fun, and I’m a sucker for Shrek’s fairytale satire. I can just imagine some of the humor in the modern woman with short hair suddenly having looooooong hair, and her troubles of having to deal with it, tripping over it, getting stuff stuck in it because she isn’t a fairytale princess, she’s a modern day woman in a princess’s body.
You know that part with the original version of Aladdin with Abbi in it is the first time I am hearing about this character. I mean I know that originally Princess Jasmine was going to be a brat and change later, but it does sound interesting that Aladdin was originally going to choose Abbi over her. If that plot line was used, it would have been seen as the subversion of the usual formula of the guy getting with the princess and chooses his friend. I guess that's maybe where Sadira from the animated series got her inspiration from Abbi. Then again I do love Aladdin and Jasmine's relationship so it was good he ended up with her.
In my opinion? I think Elsa would of been better kept as a misunderstood “evil” Queen and they could have had let it go work well with the original idea. I’m not really good at explaining it but I have a few I ideas in how it could have gone
They decided to replace the fairy tale with feminism propaganda and ended up rewarded with a huge homerun of a movie that literally played in theaters until the DVD came out and sold more merchandise than any single Walmart warehouse could hold. As far as Disney is concerned Elsa could not have done better. It's not about a good story, it's about getting people to buy.
@@MelodyAMc14 please....like the original story is better: an entire round trip in which there is no opposition , cry in a boy's eyes and everything is fixed , with the titular "Ice Queen" showing up in only one scene and not even as a villain. the second idea is for the Ice Queen to be a thot that kills her men and take their prizes until another man shows up and somehow unthot her. By far , Frozen is an improvement , it's ridiculous how people bash Frozen for been popular
@@phantasosxgames8488 EXACTLY. There are massive problems with the original Snow Queen's story structure that make it next to impossible to make it work well on film (The 1957 Soviet film is the best one to try it.) An evil Elsa doesn't mean anything if the story is broken. Disney was absolutely right to change it the way they did. Wanna know a movie/book that tells the original Snow Queen concept in a way that actually WORKS? See THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE. That story has an Ice Queen that's a clear and persistent threat, has a personality that's both charismatic and terrifying, and takes Jesus himself and an entire country rising up against her in a massive fight-to-the-death just to stop her.
@@scaryhobbit211 exactly. Ice Queen is a good fairy tale, with teaching kids and whatnot....but for a movie? it had a bad structure in all it's places , it's no better than a parable and it would need to change. Chloe Jayde Yea I love Aladdin a lot, but the movie was reworked in Sleeping Beauty, they even used some cut scenes from Sleeping Beauty. It’s not a coincidence that Aurora and Jasmine are always packaged together in marketing.
IorekB92 if you watch all the extended elements of Sleepy Beauty, look at the characters and how they interact. They clearly fleshed out Jasmine and Aladdin more than Aurora and Philip. Both party’s are prisoners of their fates, both get a full time magical guardian/s, Aladdin is expelled by Jafar, Philip by Maleficent, return to slay the polymorph version of villain, the villains are the same person lol. The market scene is very similar of the cut scene from sleeping beauty, Aurora and Jasmine sing in the same range. Plus many other elements, that are beyond fairy tail tropes. Obviously the Aurora/Philip Waltz is the Disney standard couples dance so this is excluded from the comparison.
Honestly the original Aladdin felt more natural and loving with his friends from home and his mother being the focus. It sounds better than Aladdin chasing after the princess.

The reason the Enchanted Snow Palace was never built is simple: guests didn't want sedate dark rides, they wanted roller coasters. The board really wanted to greenlight the attraction, but at the same time, they didn't want to lose guests to Magic Mountain. Therefore, they passed on Enchanted Ice Palace in favor of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Marc Davis ragequit Disney shortly thereafter.

This is FASCINATING omg. A lot of these edits come down to slimming down the first act of the screenplay and upping the stakes/powers at play. Like, Aladdin using the genie's power to make an interview go well as opposed to using the genie's power to just straight up become a prince!!!! AGH!!! WILD
I went to see Aladdin the musical with my school and most the rejected characters and songs were added, which now that I know that I thinks that’s really cool!

I like the original version and read it to my kids, but the disney version is more entertaining and dramatic.
True!

I love learning about both Disney history and other animation studios history
Susana Rodrigues omg I thought I was the only one who saw how much Tagled took from Barbie as Ropunzel
Well Disney did create an actual reason to have super long hair.
I can’t believe disney took inspiration from a Barbie movie
Don’t forget Mother Gothel (Disney) and Gothel (Barbie)
Barely anything from disney is original. Even their DCOMs (Twitches and Cheetah Girls were books, High School Musical was an actual musical, Zombies was originally a failed tv show, and Phantom of the Megaplex.....well that ones obvious)
They took Snow Queen, changed everything but the reindeer and the snow, and said it was based on the Snow Queen.
Inspired, but even that was an exaggeration.
we know it wasn´t
It still was. They just combined characters Kay and Snow Queen into one single character: Elsa.
@@TheStOne1: Isn't Kristoff meant to be Kai? Or is he the Robber Girl and they switched her gender becouse... "no homo" I guess?
I'm fascinated by the amount of songs that they resurrected for Aladdin on Broadway
Kind of like how the Special Edition of Beauty and the Beast put in the song “Human Again” from it’s Broadway musical.
Their original plans for Frozen are absolutely better than what they ended up going with. Nothing happened in Frozen; it was a fetching mission. Evil Elsa looked like an amazing character.
But isn't that what the original is too, a "fetching" of the sisters little brother?
BlazeHeartPanther Blaze It looked like there was more to the story than that though
@@foggypebble5159 When I meant original, I meant the original book with which they based this on.
BlazeHeartPanther Blaze Oh, you mean the original Snow Queen story. Yeah, you’re right. I meant the original Disney version.
I would've like to have seen the version where Elsa was looking for a man. Sounds like it could've been a funny film.
I would almost wish that these scrapped ideas would be turned into something like a Disney+ series. A What if the story went differently kind of thing. Especially the original Aladdin.
Alternate universe Disney classics? Absolutely yes pls.
Yes!! Like the marvel ‘What If?’ Series they’re making but for Disney concepts!!
Exactly! It's the same company anyway! :D
I can only agree with you, dude. 2D animation would be great for this.
I think removing the mother in Aladdin was a mistake. It grounds him more.
I know they should've kept her too many Disney characters have dead mothers its not cool
Jacqui, it's something called "procrastination"
Also removing “Humiliate the Boy” was a mistake. Without an original villain song, now all Jafar has is a reprise of “Prince Ali” as his villain song.

I can’t help but laugh at the idea of a buff Rafiki.
I like how the unused friends in Aladdin were used in the musical. Great use of characters forgotten
In my opinion? I think Elsa would of been better kept as a misunderstood “evil” Queen and they could have had let it go work well with the original idea. I’m not really good at explaining it but I have a few I ideas in how it could have gone
I kinda want someone to animate the original storyline.
People bash Frozen , for ridiculous reasons , because , if we analyze coldly , it had the exact same structure to pretty much any other disney musical , with the whole difference been that we had 2 princess and with a love between sisters been the focus.
For anyone who enjoyed the original snow queen story, fairytale theatre made a live action movie based on it that's pretty good
Theres also a animated version of the original snow queen story from 1995, I was obsessed with it as a kid 😂
Those original aladdin tapes are such a great find!
This version of Aladdin sounds better, it makes him actually sound like a diamond in a rough instead of a greedy thief
Chloe Jayde Yea I love Aladdin a lot, but the movie was reworked in Sleeping Beauty, they even used some cut scenes from Sleeping Beauty. It’s not a coincidence that Aurora and Jasmine are always packaged together in marketing.
He gave his bread away to the other homeless children
@@oximofo9 How? I don't see it..
Chloe Jayde / spelling correction : thief

You've been digging up some fascinating research, Mark. Nicely done, once again :D
I think they made the right choice. I'd take Big Thunder over a dark ride any day.

I rather would have liked to have seen the more "Victorian" inspired Beauty and the Beast.
That isnt victorian era. It's a late 17th century French look. Or more Georgian.
It’s baroque, not Georgian nor Victorian, baroque
@@maurioooe1973 Georgian is a TIME PERIOD, from early 1700 to early 1800.
Marking the time period during the rule of the Hanoverian kings.
Baroque is a STYLE. It was a popular dramatic, architectural and art style , popular before and during the first part of the Georgian period.
My comment is correcting the poster about the time period. They said victorian, which is far too late for the costuming and furniture style of the clips they were referring to.
So, while some of the imagery is in the Baroque style, the time period seems early Georgian, if we had to place a time period on an animated fantasy story.
Georgian actually, but agreed
