As an Italian I must point out that the invasion of Ethiopia was more humiliating for Italy than for Ethiopia: Mussolini sent in half a million men with 795 tanks, 2,000 guns, and 595 aircrafts against 800,000 underarmed Ethiopians supported by 4 antique tanks (a gift from a more honorable Italy than the one created by Mussolini), 7 armored cars, 234 obsolete guns, and 13 planes (of which only 3 were combat capable, and obsolete), and Ethiopia still resisted effectively until Mussolini ordered to use gas and terror tactics. That invasion only humiliated and dishonored Italy, and should have been punished faster.

My great uncle was Haile Selassie's private pilot sometime after he stopped flying B-17s in WWII - I've seen the gold watch he gave him when he stopped flying for him . Anyway, my mom did a bunch of genealogy research but this was a real eye-opener. Thank you for putting this together. I wish now I would have spoken to my uncle more bout his time as Selassie's pilot before he passed away.

My Father actually got to meet Haile Selassie in person. When he was a kid, Selassie was visiting his school (The Holy Trinity Church) and the kids were told not to see him when he passes by so when he visited, every kid put their backs towards him. Except for my father. He just stood there facing him and Selassie just nodded at him. Shortly afterwards, a teacher threatened to hit him once the ceremony was over but he probably forgot about it since he was never hit that day.
My dad was for two years the head master of "Menelik II School" in Addis Abeba. He actually got to shake the Emperor's hand. They were told not to squeeze to hard when shaking hands since the Emperor might have to shake hundreds of hands on one occasion. I still have the menue from a banquet at the Imperial Palace my dad attended. The Swedish contingent performed some folk dances at the Emperor's birthday. The "ox dance" amused him somewhat.

My grandfather was the governor of Wollo region during the emperor’s reign. He had devised a complex solution to the drought that involved transporting food from the west of the country and storing it in large underground bunkers. There was actually excess good in the western part of Ethiopia at that time but the road and transport was the issue. So he went to ask the emperor for funds and was denied. He went back the following year and again was turned down as the emperor opted to purchase arms for defence with the little budget he had. So my grandfather asked to step down. The following year the Derg used the famine as a propoganda tool to gain popular support and the emperor was removed from power. The only reason the communists didn’t kill my grandfather was because they found his diary that he had always kept and it talked all about this plan for Wollo. He was spared. Ironically the communist Derg ended up being far far worse than anything negative that the emperor ever did.

He did so however with the help of a few European Empires who were enemies with Italy, people forget that while the Europeans were out colonizing the world they were also butting heads and fighting with each other a lot....it was pretty normal for a European power to align themselves with a native group or indigenous empire to take a stand against one of their enemies....take for example how the Ottomans aligned with Germany in ww1 because both powers had a common enemy in France and Britain....colonialism is often portrayed as this "white people Vs indigenous people" which for the most part it was, but there was also a lot of "white people Vs white people" and "white people align with indigenous people to take out other white people or other indigenous people too".... South Africa is a perfect example of this, how the Basotho, Xhosa, Swati tribes aligned with the British against the combined alliance of the Boers and the Zulu and in exchange the Swati were awarded with their own land and country called Eswatini or Swaziland today and the baSotho were given Lesotho as their country within the borders of South Africa.

Menelik hid in his cave with his Shewa royal guard. It was the masterful strategy by the great Tigrayan general Ras Alula that was responsible for this victory . In fact Ras Alula advocated to follow the retreating Italians into Eritrea and destroy them completely restoring Eritrea back to Ethiopia. But the weak Menelik decided to let them retreat and then made a treaty with them that they get to keep Eritrea. Fast forward to this day and you can see the devastating consequences of this decision. Ethiopia is landlocked , Eritrea is ruled by a dictator , and war is rampant .

My father told me stories of his childhood in ethiopia, as did my mother. one story was about how my grandfather was nearly murdered by Italians for being a Jew. my dad smuggled Jews out of Ethiopia so they could get to israel, while the country was under lockdown under the military communist dictatorship. it's so surreal to listen to this.

Great video. Perhaps something omitted here would be the gallant resistance that was happening all over Ethiopia during the Italian occupation. Mussolini's forces were able to control major towns but they incurred recurrent raids on their troop's movement, outpost, supply lines and had difficulty retaining control of rural areas due to the 5 yeear rebellion led by the likes of the legendary Belay Zeleke, Jegema Kello and Ras Seyoum Mengesha. Though outgunned, Arbgenoch (name of the resistance in Amharic) held out by fighting a brave Guerilla war until 1941. In essence, the fight against fascism was being fought in the highlands of Ethiopia years before the war had begun in Europe. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting to retain our independence but they succeeded even against overwhelming odds. Each year since 1941, we celebrate the bravery of our heroes on May 5th.
Very well written, also the Emperor did not just simply flee Ethiopia as this would mention The Emperor was in north with His Fighting force (near the are of the mountain known as a defender "he who goes before the emperor" not 100% sure on that, my memory could be off) Manning an anti aircraft gun fighting against the invading Italian army. He would note the bravery of the enemy aircraft he would see diving down against oncoming fire. Unfortunately the enemy forces were overwhelming and using chemical weoponary, the emperor's own hands had seen damage. Decision was made to retread, against advice the Emperor had made the decision to detour on the way back to Addis Ababa and pilgrimage to Lalibella, a longer, ardeuos and difficult journey. Upon arrival at Lalibella the Emperor went on to spend the night in Deep Prayer, visibly distressed. Returning from the front along his path through Lalibella to Addis Ababa where after meeting with the Ministry, it had been decided for the best that the emperor to leave the empire and personally appeal to the league of nations. The Emperor was seen off by Train, with him others also left. This train left from Addis Ababa to Djibouti, and then to the port, where a British Naval ship (not sure of name) had taken the Emperor as guest. His first stop, Jerusalem! Where upon his arrival the local population was stunned at this personality. He went on to spend the time praying with Monks at the Ethiopian Holy Site Staying the night, again in deep meditative pray. (Dome of the church of the sepulchre?) During the Wello famine, the traditional landlords took what little food was produced and sold it for huge profits to the cities. The millions who starved did so in the shadows of well-stocked grainaries. That’s why the Derge found it so easy to turn people against the Emperor, who kept the landlords powerful as long as they were subservient to him.
That's very true. The worst part was when he celebrated his birthday in an extravagant ceremony with a huge cake that was made in the U.K while millions were starving to death. There are even stories of how the cake was damaged due to turbulence en route to Addis Ababa and that it was returned back to the U.K to be remade.

@@irical100 I mean, he was self-serving to a degree. His vision for Ethiopia was to make it a respected and modern nation on the continent, but only with him as its non-negotiable focal point. I thought I read somewhere that Ethiopia was a political power during the period where Byzantium was a power in the Eastern Mediterranean. They exchanged ambassadors and had diplomatic ties. Imagine a country that is so old that it had a presence on the world stage from the Roman era until we were sending rockets into space.

The period where Byzantium was a power in the Eastern Mediterranean for a very long time. But Ethiopia did exist during that whole time period. However Ethiopia's peak was when it was known as the Axumite Empire and even took over Yemen supposedly on the behest of the Byzantine Emperor because the Jewish Himyarite Kingdom was persecuting Christians there. But they eventually collapsed at the hands of the Jewish warrior queen, Judit, and while she was eventually defeated, Ethiopia never reached the heights it once did, especially once the Muslim powers surrounded them and diplomatically isolated them from the other Christians in Europe. By the time the Portuguese "found" the Ethiopians, they were in a middle of a losing war against the Muslims and but the timely intervention saved them. Ethiopia was already so isolated from Europe by the point that the Portuguese thought they were the legendary kingdom of Prester John and allegedly even addressed the emperor as such (and I think the Ethiopians went along with it lol).

You have to be able to look at the bigger picture. Probably his grand plan was not working out as he planned it, so he had a bumpy road and a mega failure.

I think if you judged him by any standards other than the one guy with ultimate power and ultimate responsibility for his nation, you could probably still call him a good man to the end. But unfortunately for him, those were the standards that he chose for himself, and people will judge him by them. The people who came after certainly did seem to be more corrupt, based on what's said in this video.

When Italy invaded Abyssinia(Ethiopia)just before World War Two they took one of the Axumite obelisks to Rome and erected it near the Termini railway station but a few years back in a gesture of good will the Italian government allowed the obelisk to be returned to Ethiopia and re-erected at Axum -the ancient capital.
Selassie is to Ethiopia what Napoleon was to France. An icon, an emperor who returned from exile only to be outed humiliated and killed by his people. A man like any other corrupted by his own cult of personality. I see why he is idolized. I hope Ethiopia can one day unify under a true leader of virtue. For the Africa to prosper, Africans must prosper. Many of our brothers and sisters live in slavery today and too many of us pretend it isn't going on, perpetuating the cycle of inaction by blaming the woes of the black man on the white man. I see him, last Emperor in the line of Solomon; as a prophet for his transformative role around decolonization in the 20th century. In him we find the roots of civil rights and indigenous movements the world over. That split me apart from the typical Rasta that sees him as the Messiah. But a prophet is a mortal man; complete with flaws.

Please share your point of the suggested reading (Rev 5). It clearly shows that there is a problem. Someone is needed to "decipher" and "unlock" a mystery. Haile Selassie is one of the most misunderstood leaders of Ethiopia. The lack of wisdom from the youths of that generation paved the road for orcs and demons.

As an Italian I must point out that the invasion of Ethiopia was more humiliating for Italy than for Ethiopia: Mussolini sent in half a million men with 795 tanks, 2,000 guns, and 595 aircrafts against 800,000 underarmed Ethiopians supported by 4 antique tanks (a gift from a more honorable Italy than the one created by Mussolini), 7 armored cars, 234 obsolete guns, and 13 planes (of which only 3 were combat capable, and obsolete), and Ethiopia still resisted effectively until Mussolini ordered to use gas and terror tactics.
That invasion only humiliated and dishonored Italy, and should have been punished faster.

My great uncle was Haile Selassie's private pilot sometime after he stopped flying B-17s in WWII - I've seen the gold watch he gave him when he stopped flying for him . Anyway, my mom did a bunch of genealogy research but this was a real eye-opener. Thank you for putting this together. I wish now I would have spoken to my uncle more bout his time as Selassie's pilot before he passed away.

My Father actually got to meet Haile Selassie in person. When he was a kid, Selassie was visiting his school (The Holy Trinity Church) and the kids were told not to see him when he passes by so when he visited, every kid put their backs towards him. Except for my father. He just stood there facing him and Selassie just nodded at him. Shortly afterwards, a teacher threatened to hit him once the ceremony was over but he probably forgot about it since he was never hit that day.

My dad was for two years the head master of "Menelik II School" in Addis Abeba. He actually got to shake the Emperor's hand. They were told not to squeeze to hard when shaking hands since the Emperor might have to shake hundreds of hands on one occasion.

My grandfather was the governor of Wollo region during the emperor’s reign. He had devised a complex solution to the drought that involved transporting food from the west of the country and storing it in large underground bunkers. There was actually excess good in the western part of Ethiopia at that time but the road and transport was the issue. So he went to ask the emperor for funds and was denied. He went back the following year and again was turned down as the emperor opted to purchase arms for defence with the little budget he had. So my grandfather asked to step down. The following year the Derg used the famine as a propoganda tool to gain popular support and the emperor was removed from power. The only reason the communists didn’t kill my grandfather was because they found his diary that he had always kept and it talked all about this plan for Wollo. He was spared. Ironically the communist Derg ended up being far far worse than anything negative that the emperor ever did.

i think u failed to mention emperor menilk the one who defeated the Italians becoming the first and only African nation to beat the colonizing force and the person who was really responsible for the modernization of Ethiopia
He did so however with the help of a few European Empires who were enemies with Italy, people forget that while the Europeans were out colonizing the world they were also butting heads and fighting with each other a lot....it was pretty normal for a European power to align themselves with a native group or indigenous empire to take a stand against one of their enemies....take for example how the Ottomans aligned with Germany in ww1 because both powers had a common enemy in France and Britain....colonialism is often portrayed as this "white people Vs indigenous people" which for the most part it was, but there was also a lot of "white people Vs white people" and "white people align with indigenous people to take out other white people or other indigenous people too".... South Africa is a perfect example of this, how the Basotho, Xhosa, Swati tribes aligned with the British against the combined alliance of the Boers and the Zulu and in exchange the Swati were awarded with their own land and country called Eswatini or Swaziland today and the baSotho were given Lesotho as their country within the borders of South Africa.

To downplay an entire nation's achievement against colonization as some proxy war between western countries is ignorant. you wouldn't say the french won USA its independence despite it having received far more help and aid than the Ethiopians had in both of their wars against the Italians.
Menelik hid in his cave with his Shewa royal guard. It was the masterful strategy by the great Tigrayan general Ras Alula that was responsible for this victory . In fact Ras Alula advocated to follow the retreating Italians into Eritrea and destroy them completely restoring Eritrea back to Ethiopia. But the weak Menelik decided to let them retreat and then made a treaty with them that they get to keep Eritrea. Fast forward to this day and you can see the devastating consequences of this decision. Ethiopia is landlocked , Eritrea is ruled by a dictator , and war is rampant .

Great video. Perhaps something omitted here would be the gallant resistance that was happening all over Ethiopia during the Italian occupation. Mussolini's forces were able to control major towns but they incurred recurrent raids on their troop's movement, outpost, supply lines and had difficulty retaining control of rural areas due to the 5 yeear rebellion led by the likes of the legendary Belay Zeleke, Jegema Kello and Ras Seyoum Mengesha. Though outgunned, Arbgenoch (name of the resistance in Amharic) held out by fighting a brave Guerilla war until 1941.
In essence, the fight against fascism was being fought in the highlands of Ethiopia years before the war had begun in Europe. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting to retain our independence but they succeeded even against overwhelming odds. Each year since 1941, we celebrate the bravery of our heroes on May 5th.

The Emperor was in north with His Fighting force (near the are of the mountain known as a defender "he who goes before the emperor" not 100% sure on that, my memory could be off)
Manning an anti aircraft gun fighting against the invading Italian army.
He would note the bravery of the enemy aircraft he would see diving down against oncoming fire.
Unfortunately the enemy forces were overwhelming and using chemical weoponary, the emperor's own hands had seen damage.
Decision was made to retread, against advice the Emperor had made the decision to detour on the way back to Addis Ababa and pilgrimage to Lalibella, a longer, ardeuos and difficult journey.
Upon arrival at Lalibella the Emperor went on to spend the night in Deep Prayer, visibly distressed.
Returning from the front along his path through Lalibella to Addis Ababa where after meeting with the Ministry, it had been decided for the best that the emperor to leave the empire and personally appeal to the league of nations. The Emperor was seen off by Train, with him others also left.
This train left from Addis Ababa to Djibouti, and then to the port, where a British Naval ship (not sure of name) had taken the Emperor as guest.
His first stop, Jerusalem! Where upon his arrival the local population was stunned at this personality.
He went on to spend the time praying with Monks at the Ethiopian Holy Site Staying the night, again in deep meditative pray.

During the Wello famine, the traditional landlords took what little food was produced and sold it for huge profits to the cities. The millions who starved did so in the shadows of well-stocked grainaries. That’s why the Derge found it so easy to turn people against the Emperor, who kept the landlords powerful as long as they were subservient to him.
That's very true. The worst part was when he celebrated his birthday in an extravagant ceremony with a huge cake that was made in the U.K while millions were starving to death. There are even stories of how the cake was damaged due to turbulence en route to Addis Ababa and that it was returned back to the U.K to be remade.
The acts of said landlords doe not suggest complicity on behalf of the Emperor. Also, "subservience to Him" makes it sound as if He was simply a self-serving autocrat, which of course is not true, not by any stretch.

In many ways he viewed Ethiopia as an extension of himself. It doesn't take away from some of the positive reforms he introduced, but it should not be ignored either.

I thought I read somewhere that Ethiopia was a political power during the period where Byzantium was a power in the Eastern Mediterranean. They exchanged ambassadors and had diplomatic ties. The period where Byzantium was a power in the Eastern Mediterranean for a very long time. But Ethiopia did exist during that whole time period. However Ethiopia's peak was when it was known as the Axumite Empire and even took over Yemen supposedly on the behest of the Byzantine Emperor because the Jewish Himyarite Kingdom was persecuting Christians there.
But they eventually collapsed at the hands of the Jewish warrior queen, Judit, and while she was eventually defeated, Ethiopia never reached the heights it once did, especially once the Muslim powers surrounded them and diplomatically isolated them from the other Christians in Europe. By the time the Portuguese "found" the Ethiopians, they were in a middle of a losing war against the Muslims and but the timely intervention saved them. Ethiopia was already so isolated from Europe by the point that the Portuguese thought they were the legendary kingdom of Prester John and allegedly even addressed the emperor as such (and I think the Ethiopians went along with it lol).

Looks to me like one of those real-life cautionary tales -- that however good of a person you think you are, even if you're absolutely right about that, absolute power will still corrupt you.

Yes, but it's a very sensible balance - you must think about the long term. Would you do something that would make you unpopular while it would indirectly benefit everyone else? You have to be able to look at the bigger picture. Probably his grand plan was not working out as he planned it, so he had a bumpy road and a mega failure.
This is also classic case of "die the hero or live long enough to become the villain."
Except, though he ruled with an iron fist, he was apparently not corrupt. To my eyes it looks like he was doing what needed to be done. Seems everyone else was corrupt, they craved that which they did not have, so they killed him for it. If that is not corruption, I don't know what is. What say you about that?

I see him, last Emperor in the line of Solomon; as a prophet for his transformative role around decolonization in the 20th century. In him we find the roots of civil rights and indigenous movements the world over. That split me apart from the typical Rasta that sees him as the Messiah. Please share your point of the suggested reading (Rev 5). It clearly shows that there is a problem. Someone is needed to "decipher" and "unlock" a mystery. I met him when he visited socialist Hungary and brought joy to the Ethiopean students in Hungarian universities. They don`t make leaders like he was anymore. /I also met Che and Castro in the same Hungary though...but compared to the negus they were pranksters. Not only in Jamaica, but very strongly in the U.S., there was a faction of people who saw a Black divinity in the person of Haile Selassie. To the point that many, many African Americans at the time were signing up to volunteer in the fight against the Italian invasion. The main proponent of Rastafari movement, Leonard P. Howell, said he became more aware of Selassie's importance from "the Rastafarites in America"....
