I think the analogy between Trump getting rid of things; wasn’t a remark that he gets rid of the army/officers, it was that he gets rid of things he disagrees with... is what they were getting at, I think.
Fun fact: in 2003 my father was working as a doctor in the ICU at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah, and one of his patients was Idi Amin. He was one of two ICU doctors who cared for Idi Amin during the last several weeks of his life.
@@joecurran2811 According to dad he didn't say much. He was morbidly obese at this point, extremely unhealthy and unwell. His sons were there at the hospital as well, they were educated in the UK I believe, and were very well-spoken and clearly intelligent and well-educated. It was an unusual situation for sure! He found the sons charming and easy to talk to, but didn't get any warmth from Idi, who soon fell into a coma and died. We were home watching CNN when they announced Idi had died in a hospital in Jeddah, I looked over at dad and he said "strange, I should have gotten a call, he is my patient after all." He called the ward and got confirmation he was still alive. These news organizations get stuff wrong all the time.
The Victoria Cross that he wore was stolen from the Byrne family . Obviously there was no way it was going to be recovered. The family petitioned the Home Office , the Royal family and anyone else who would listen for a new one . Eventually it was reissued . ( only 4 have ever been cast and reissued ). When they received it , they promptly sold it !
What's insane isthe UK and the US at this time still considered he could be managed. They supported (or tolerated) him because he wasn't allied to Russia. They never supported Tanzania because of this reason.
@thinktankinit their economy was tanked because of him. He let the country fall apart by spending money on the military, devalued the currency by over printing

@Graig Simmonette Half wrong yes their are just brainwashed Americans but most Americans don't like any of them and know but can't do anything as they out spend the other candidate's so when voting time comes their the only one most people know about Money in Politics corrupt the system the People themselves actaully do know what they want and are on the right side but since this country is representative and their representatives are bribed by the donor class they of course wont represent the peoples will but get relected because they can simply outspend the rest it's not that the voters like them. Americans have woke to this and are moving out of the established parties funded by corporations and the wealthy to grass roots movement that are against this but it's a uphill battle as we will never be able to out spend them but we have the ideas and the people we just need keep going. You know bernie Sanders would be president he was frauded by the Clintons and DNC but Even after he'd be beating trump by double digits and it was simply his ideas that are for people. I am tired of living in a world where they talk about how we humans are so advanced yet we can't even take care of the basics.
In high school I did a spoken presentation biography report on Idi Amin. The teacher didn't know who he was and I had to wait a week to get a grade. I wound up getting an A.
@Charlie K No, he knew the more notable things like the operation entebbe hostage thing and being part of the British army, but didn't know smaller things such as the boxing champ and him flunking aptitude tests then going into receive university degrees etc. It was also the mid to late 90s era and he was old and was sticking mainly to what was in the curriculum and probably retired shortly after I graduated. And to be honest even finding anything on him at the time was difficult to find in print, I just liked the nickname the butcher of Uganda. He did some research and after giving me an a thanked me for not picking the generic Martin Luther King and John f Kennedy biography reports like he gets every year.
A world history teacher once counted me wrong for identifying "Russia" on a map when he said it was actually "The former Soviet Union." I told him that was like identifying Asia as "former Mongolia." He said, "When did Mongolia take over Asia?" I switched classes to US history, but ... you know. The Mongols.
Ngl I didn't see this as a burn. I saw it as he's hardheaded and doesn't care for complex explanations ie he was very efficient and borderline unstoppable lol
“An incredible person who certainly is not mad" did he have a gun to this guys head or something? Who points that out when they're complimenting somebody?
His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hajj Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of all the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular. no delusions of grandeur there.
I remember in an interview, his chair creaking under the weight of his huge bulk as he leaned towards the interviewer and said "I consider myself to be the most powerful man in the world and you are very lucky to be interviewing me".
Yes he was and he sure deserved that award he got, I was in 3rd grade when he was finally ousted, Idi Amin was brutal and had 1st grader vocabulary when he spoke English
Yes. I met Idi Amin and Whittaker became Idi Amin. The story is not true - the characters swapped out - but painted a perfect portrait anyway. Idi's Dr Barkham was was our neighbor & Amin's "Little White Monkey" was a creature called Bob Astol - or Bob Asshole as he was called. A min's 3rd wife did have an affair with a Dr & got pregnant. Botched abortion & the Dr committed suicide.

It wasn’t that Idi Amin deliberately withheld air support from the Ugandan invasion of Tanzania. The problem was that the Israel Defence Force destroyed a large portion of the Ugandan Air Force during the Entebbe Raid. Amin’s idiocy rests in the fact that rather than postponing the invasion until the air force could be replenished, he went ahead with it anyways. Also, he had already purged all qualified military officers from the country, meaning that the invasion force literally knew nothing about military strategy or tactics.
my father was born in kampala uganda just before amin's reign, luckily him and the rest of his family was able to escape before, Amin's purge came into full effect. God forbid he may not have survived
Ben McNutt I am glad your family got out. That sounds like pure chaos! Rampant murders, sponsored racism and increasing inflation. I had no idea the people of Uganda had to suffer from this just a generation ago! That picture of skulls on the cart is shocking.

@JeffChad Jesus Christ , them being recognized as a group doesn't make them a tribe in Uganda , there are many foreign pipo of different heritage in Uganda that are recognized as a group but not as a tribe . that Indian issue was closed years back when they wanted 2 be called the "bayiindi" just like in Kenya but the parliament didn't approve of that becoz statistically they are more Indians who are non natives compared 2 those that have been born and raised from here ( many Indians over here 2day are just migrated 2 Uganda of recent and very few are Even first generation settlers ) . It was among this reason why people of Rwandan heritage were recognized constitutionally as a tribe ( u will find most are like 5th generation settlers ) but recently they were facing trouble with national ID registration and they were told by the government to change their name. In conclusion , the Indians aren't recognized as a tribe and u won't find that anywhere in Uganda's constitution coz that it was thrown out . unless u sticking to your imagination.

Worth mentioning about the aftermath of the Entebbe raid is that Amin had several army officers arrested and shot because they were suspected of collaborating with the Israelis. When Dora Bloch was dragged from her hospital bed, several doctors and nurses who tried to intervene were killed as well. On their way back to Israel the IDF planes made a refueling stop in Kenya. Angered, Amin had well over 200 Kenyans living in Uganda killed, a further 3000 fled the country.
@@residentimp Folk magic and thinly veiled Pagan practices were pretty common all throughout Christian Europe for many centuries. Why should followers of any sect of Islam or any religion be that different? This sort of thing is historically very common. I mean even now people who consider themselves devout Christians in the southern U.S.A. practice Hoodoo, similar things are still true of people who live in the English countryside, and in Russia something referred to as "Double Faith" was pretty common. Go to Indonesia and you'll find plenty of Muslims who revere and work with Spirits. Religion is a very complicated matter the world over. Also has anyone here even skimmed The Qur'an? It's really no more screwed up than any other holy text. It also explicitly condemns a lot of the abuses people such as him engage in.
My grandad was the general in the Tanzanian army that defeated Idi amin. John Butler Walden, he’s even got a wiki. He’s a critical part of that period in history. Would be nice if you add that detail.
In 1980, I met and worked with a former Ugandan army officer, who told me of all those horrible atrocities. His name was also Amin, but he had no relation to !di. He said they often threw people off buildings and bridges while the victims cried and begged for their lives. The crocodiles learned to stay under and near the bridges, as they knew a meal would come soon. He told me the crocs would fight over the bodies. Many were eaten while still alive. He escaped Uganda while inspecting an outgoing flight for wanted suspects. He pulled a gun on the pilot, and told him to take off. He had learned from a friend, that Idi had his name on a hit list. He ended up in England and then eventually migrated to the U.S. This guy had horrible anger issues, and I was afraid of him a little, He had a lot of blood on his hands.
@@MarvoloSalazar Well. I'm not completely sure. He would kill people who knew things, or had done something he didn't like. The guy I knew had rounded up many people of all social strata, in and out of government. He once threw an African chief off a 10 story building because the chief wouldn't make his women cover their breasts as per their culture. I asked him once if people didn't beg and scream for their lives. He said "of course, all of them did". I think that many of the people that Amin killed had just lived out their usefulness and probably knew things that might cause trouble in the future. It was very disturbing for me, but I wanted to know.
@@uralbob1 well thats disturbing growing up we learned about him and i got to see images of his victims they were very gruesome but first hand accounts are different. My mom was born and brought up in Kampala. My great great grandfather migrated to Uganda from India back in 1890s. As you can imagine, my maternal family, even though Indian, always felt as though they were Africans. In 1971, when my mom was 14, Indians were given a 2 day notice period to leave Uganda. Suddenly, all her African family and friends also seemed to side with Idi Amin’s decision. There was a prevalent racism against southeast Asians although she remembers fondly of the African friends she had. So she tearfully parted Uganda the very same day leaving behind all our properties. We went from rich to paupers in a matter of a few hours. She sought asylum in Nigeria and UK, and then immigrated to India. Even until today she never feels home in India and has been wanting to move back to Uganda. She’s been fighting court cases to get back her properties in Uganda. Although we know she won’t get anywhere with it we just let her chase after them for her happiness.
When the movie last king of Scotland came out so many Ugandans were traumatized by Forest Whitaker. Some thought he had come back. There's always superstition amongst my African people.
I paid an inordinate amount of attention to world news as a kid in the 70's. I lived in Arizona at the time and *I* was terrified of Amin. I felt awful for Ugandan people.
@@ariefraiser140 I can't image how that must have felt for them. Those of your people who lived through those monstrous times are quite remarkable. Then to see that movie and immediately relive such trauma, I can't find the right words to even express all those feelings other than terror. You are all a resiliant people, that I truly respect.
The ppl here saying Idi Amin was in some way a "hero" are delusional. The British made him a soldier, but he became a monster on his own. There were/are endless African men who became soldiers in the British colonial armies and remained upstanding men. The British did many terrible things, but they didn't create the monster of Idi Amin.
Anyone who is backed by Britain, Europe or America is a puppet. His or hers number one priority will be the above meddling devil countries, last on the list will be their own people/countries. If a leader comes along and dose not comply with the above devil countries he/she will be eliminated.
He trained with the Brita the most brutal colonial power with many atrocities including the army. Just because you're doing what about ISM about other soldiers who probably found another purpose to participate in besides politics doesn't equate to the fact that the military training and the colonial footprint was brutal
@Ewarton Charlton , I've been intrigued by this guy my whole life. My dad would speak about him when I was a child. Could you please tell me where I could find more accuracy on the man?
Very well-done video. I remember being in elementary school when many of his later exploits were being discussed in the news. Btw the image at 17:32 is not Idi Amin, but of late actor, Yaphet Kotto, who portrayed him in the 1977 NBC tv movie "Raid on Entebbe".
Kenyatta was also not to be messed around with. Stories of what he said about Idi Amin even thinking he can annex part of Kenya were chilling to Amin himself
I was a teenager in the 1970's, and I remember Idi Amin, and Pol Pot, though living in America, it still scared me that there were people like this in the world. I hated the Vietnam War, because I realized that Americans were dying there. Thanks Simon for the history lesson, because I was young then I didn't know the whole story.
I'd hate it more to see my compatriots soiling their honor and the country's honor by killing innocent people and dying doing it, rather than just the deaths in "our team". Dishonor was brought to the country, especially with Kissinger and Nixon, Reagan was no different

He found the sons charming and easy to talk to, but didn't get any warmth from Idi, who soon fell into a coma and died.

He trained with the Brita the most brutal colonial power with many atrocities including the army. Constructive criticism here: I love your videos but please put your ads and sponsorships at the beginning or end of your videos, because honestly the ad part in the middle broke the flow of your video and it was quite frankly annoying.
He actually addressed that in a recent video. He apologized for the interruptions, but said that the sponsor had requested (but I think they actually REQUIRED and he was trying to not make waves) the ad read not be at the end or beginning. It is annoying, to be sure, but hey, being a professional creator is a job, so I try to understand they have to pay the bills. (that being said, when it's too long, I still skip ahead!)
Its to guarantee people see the ad because if the ad doesn't get the traffic they hope they will stop using him to advertise and honestly I'd rather watch an ad and be able to enjoy the content rather than no and no video

Interesting fact: the one Israeli death of the Entebbe raid was Yonatan Netanyahu, the older brother of Benhamin Netanyahu. He has said that his hard-line stance towards terrorists was forged after his brother's death at Entebbe. Other members of the raid have since denounced the current PM.
