What I've been looking for, the hands tipped forward/ebows high in the clean was the key! ... I was definitely doing it wrong. added 30kg, just like that! thanks!
"JOIN THE DARK SIDE!" I came across an article about you in Carroll County Times from last year, and I found it very inspiring. I can't believe how many people are missing out by not finding this channel; this is professional advice.
Hi Brian. First time commenting on one of your videos! I have somehow only discovered you in the last week or so (I know my bad), but each and every video I watch of yours I think you are just an infectiously super dude!! (Ok enough with the mush). So I am still a novice at the log press stuff. Trying to stop my body being the stiff awkward bodybuilder type that I have been and becoming more power and speed based (not easy at 31 years old!). I am log pressing tomorrow, very modest numbers around 200lbs/90kg for AMRAP. Your tip of pushing the knees out instead of forward could be a game changer for me, never tried this! Also having the log choking me at the throat I have kinda been avoiding as its gruesome! I will try this also! Thanks for yet another awesome video, and I may be in touch sometime soon about how on Earth you switch carbs for fats in your diet! :) Dan.
Should have watched this vid before I tried the log press!! I was going for 150lbs, almost had it on my first rep but couldn't lock out. Went for a second and I did all the things you said not to do in the vid. That log bent me over backwards and I had to bail, hurt my back a bit but nothing severe. Thanks for the info Brian!
Brian!!! Thanks for the great information. I'm a little late to the party, but my gym just got a log and I'm pumped to start pressing that bitch. This video is so straight forward so non bs it is EXACTLY what I needed so thanks again man!
Am I the o my one that get super excited from seeing the green pull up bar in every video. “Like shits about the get real” when he’s making a video in front of it!!
Content (as always) great. Picture quality crystal clear. Video comes across as more professional. That said, for me, your excellent content in the videos has always made them worthwhile. Thank you Alan Thrall for allowing us to become aware of Brian's youtube channel. Both of you have excellent UA-cam channels.
definitely see a difference in the video and audio on this one brian. when i first learned the log, i was having issues going from the lap to the rack position. the explosivness that it takes is no joke. when i do it now, i basically explode like im trying to do a backflip. and honestly, im not sure what happens during that time. i recall getting it to the lap, then poof... its racked. everything inbetween is a blur.
I thought this might be a newer camera, can't exactly pinpoint the difference other than to say it looks a little "cleaner". I like it. I've never tried lifting a log but this looks tortuous enough for me to want to give it a shot.
I got into strength training through weightlifting, and my pull from the floor my feet are under my hips. So quite narrow stance. Likewise for my deadlift now I’ve switched into powerlifting and strongman. I also find this is a really powerful position to push press from because my joints are stacked. Have only been training log for about 6 sessions and have played around with a wider position but it feels unbalanced. Might keep working at it
Loved this video was hoping you were going to make this sometime soon. and could you make a video on how to increase your atlas stone loading and great accessory exercises for it please there's like no one on UA-cam that has made a video on this
Even a mention and six seconds of cool shots or footage does something though! If you're the kind of person who likes to lift heavy stuff, so you're watching youtube videos of people lifting heavy stuff, you see Strongman in action and say, "That's pretty fuckin' boss. I wanna do that." It's just a little more visibility.
Have my first strongman competition in a couple days. Looking over your videos for technique and pointers. I’ve done strongman things on my own plenty, just not in a competition.
great content as ever brian, would it be possible to do a video on incorporating agility training and conditioning or a husafell tutorial in the future?
Absolutely man, I include a lot of conditioning stuff in many of my training Vlog videos if you need ideas and I have written about 400 workouts on my site's daily workout section NEVERsate.com But i could make a vid about how to work them into your program. And I have only touched a Husafell stone one time in my life and that was a few weeks ago, so I have a lot to learn before I try to teach anyone.
+Brian Alsruhe that would be great! ive got a competition coming up with a husafell carry soon, just need to get it as high up my chest as possible and a good strong grip, fingers crossed it goes well, thanks for the reply, means a lot
Awesome new video Brian, thanks for the upload! So in addition to strength training I also do martial artist (mostly kickboxing and judo); and I've noticed that ever since I've implemented the log clean & press, the Olympic clean & jerk, and of course tire flips, that my front thrust kick power as well as my judo hip throws have gone way wayyy up!! My technique on the log c&p and the oly c&j are still utter crap since I'm a newbie at those haha! But I definitely plan on improving and will definitely be using what I've learned in your video into my form. Thank you again for this Brian, you've been a huge help to my training! (And I can't wait for your "how to yoke/farmers/keg carry" videos, I know they'll be amazing as always!) Cheers!
Thanks TJ and yep, if you hip strength goes up, usually your athleticism goes up as well. That is awesome news man and hopefully i will get those videos out soon!
Dear Brian! I watch your videos a lot and you are a big inspiration. Your videos are not only interesting to watch, but are also very helpful. Would you consider doing a tutorial video about the trap bar? Being from Seattle, I really like the Washington state flag in the background. 🙂🇺🇸
hey man! I've heard that the wooden log distributes weight unevenly. Yep, naral logs are a bear to press. i had one in my first comp. It wasn't really that heavy but more people zeroed it than not. It would be just about impossible to replicate unless you knew where and how much it was off. You best bet it to drive up your log OHP numbers high enough that you will get through the event and do well. Wish i had a better answer but it is a really tough situation.
I'm no expert but I think hanging kettle bells using bands and/or uneven chains instead of normal weight plates might give you a closer feel a wooden log would! Idk
I've pressed natural and metal logs and I don't find any difference. If the log has effort put into making it then the person found the balance point so it's as equal on each side as it can be. On both logs I max out at about 275, and each feels the same to me, but I'm only a beginner.
I would tend to agree with you, but it definitely depends on who is making the log. At my first comp the log looked like someone literally just went outback and cut it down. It looked amazing, but was not much fun to press. That is the only one I have touched in my life though
Hey man I appreciate all your content. I've never done any strongman and thinking about purchasing a log. Would you recommend an 8", 10" or 12" diameter log?
A 12 inch long is the only men’s log that you mentioned and is the absolute smallest thing that you’ve ever seen competition so I absolutely would not go lower than that
Might be 5 yrs too late butttt. Log press! I have a begginer comp coming up and I can log press the competition weight np (most the time) butttttt how do you put the log down for multiple reps? I have to do AMRAP in 60's 💪 doubt you'll see this but 🤞🤣
haaa the new camera show the clean trimming of beard! one day i'll try the log press but ur tips on deadlift have helped big time so on that note ty... huh where was water wasted at?
Hahahah better def means I'm going to have to start taking better care of myself...And he was referring to me pouring out the water bottle when showing how to tilt the log
Thanks brother and I would but I honestly don't really follow the sport closely enough to name more than a few. I love Mike Jenkins because we grew up together and were training partners. And Brian Shaw was at my First Maryland's Strongest Man and was just about the nicest guy ever so I like him, but aside from that, i really don't watch it all that much believe it or not!
+Brian Alsruhe that is a surprise. How about a vid to get to know you more. Like what started you off lifting? Did it start with powerlifting, weightlifting or just going into the gym to get stronger for football. It would be awesome if thrall could hook you up with a podcast with mark bell. Get a few vids in as well. 😉
Man that would be amazing! i messaged Mark Bell last week to ask if I could do a collaboration with him but didn't hear back. I am sure he gets TONS of those messages every day so it didn't hurt my precious feelings...And yea man, the how I got involved in lifting video is coming out soon!
Do you have a clean and press video for barbell? Not only do I need technique clarification, but also where in my workout to work it in. It's such a tiring exercise that I can basically forget about doing anything else efficiently afterwards, lifting wise.
No matter what if you clean over 300lbs your bicep will snap. I feel that more than you can understand. Currently at the hospital with a detached bicep. I was doing log when it happened. I was in the middle of the press though.
Thanks man it is a Sony FDR-AX33 and I love it so far. It shoots in 4K which takes up a lot of space on your hard drive but I have no complaints thus far!
Hmmmm, I know you can find individual fabricators on Facebook and such. I can;t remember their names off the top of my head but you can get one for much, MUCH cheaper than a name brand. Just search for strongman implements on Facebook and it should yield some results! Hope that helps!
Thanks brother and I touched upon that on a video just a few weeks ago. I actually think it is called "how to increase your pull-ups" or something like that...if only my brain worked...Hope that helps man!
Slaven Man's Gym It depends on the brand you have. I know rogues is 135, Slaters range from 60-125# Mine is from pit bull strongman equipment and it weighs 90#.
I live in Baltimore and definitely want to come up and train with you one day, alot of my friends from Forze came and had a great time. I passed out Saturday because I held my breath going for a Log PR of 180... very scary! anyway Awesome video i'm going to Crush it this weekend, thanks for the AWESOME content and coaching you post, your page is more helpful than you will ever know.
Yep, barbells and beer said it right. almost all men's comps are a 12" log. Women's is usually 8 but at bigger shows they will kick that up to a 10" sometimes
Hahahaha my "how to" vids take me, on average 10 Hours to record, edit and upload...I swear man, if there were more hours in the day, I would be putting out more videos!
i have the exact same problem , if i had like 36 hours in a day it would be waaay better. I know it takes a while to shoot those man, that's why I appreciate every single one. Stay safe , stay Awesome
Maybe dumb question, but: how do you pronounce your surname? I've recommended you to a few people, but no idea how to say you name! Picture quality is looking spot on.
Football bars only mimic log in one way, strict press. You can't understand the dip portion of a log, and it doesn't even come close to mimicking the clean. All that being said, if you can press it, you can probably clean it.
Well that's a bigger strict press than I have and I can log press 275 with a strict barbell of 225. The only thing with the log is getting the feel for it. As long as you have that base strength you'll be fine, but you'd want to get your hands on a log before you used one in an event. It took me about 8 tries before I could even press 200, but once I got it I was good after that. There really is nothing that mimics it.
CH7 shift your focus from building to gaining strength and the size will follow. And this is an awesome movement to strengthen and build your shoulders and traps for sure!
Hahaha they are pricey, but an awesome training tool. Plus many people's shoulders feel better pressing from the semi-supinated position, so it may be worth the investment!
Think I've got the clean nailed down. But my press suuuccckkkkkssss. What's the best way to get those numbers up? I worked on doing more reps over last winter with a lower weight and that helped a little. Progress is slowwww. I only added about 5 lbs last year to the press. I've got a vid on my channel where I bomb the first try but get it on second try. Keep in mind this is my max - and yes, I know the press sucks. ua-cam.com/video/O1phHMzcUDE/v-deo.html
Your right, your clean is awesome! On your dip and drive, your knees come a little bit too far forward and you can see the log roll down and out away from you a little bit. This changed the point of power on your press causing you to get the log a little bit too far out in front of your face. But then you rallied and fought for it which is amazing! Focus on pushing your knees out on the dip and then press directly from point A of front rack to point B a line to the back of your head and that weight will be no problem for you! That is impressive weight though! Amazing Job!
How about some circus DB tutorials, just cause i know you hate them? ;) (but also because i tried them for the first time today and felt like a gotdang buffoon)
Hahaha well, if my technique was even at the "horrible" level I might consider it...But it is not...I need to figure out how to do it first before I try to teach other people how! Hahaha
That is amazingly not good... it misses out every important bit of cleaning a log!!! Plus your clean has some serious flaws... C'mon Brian your content is usually a lot, lot better than this!
I can't curl 300lbs?!?
YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER!
Hahahah true man, true...
He hasn't met eric bugenhagen😉 jk nice vid

I really appreciate that man! And yea that article ran last Christmas day. it was really cool of them to do a piece on me!
Log has really been frustrating lately. I can’t stay balanced with leg drive. Strict pressing is fine. This definitely helped thanks!
Deff much sharper picture Brian. Quality
Thanks Rob!
Yeah, it looks great
Thanks DJ!

Trying to get 90kg this video is great and explains technical movement perfectly 🙏🏻
How did it go?
@@anonperson3972 I’m on 85kg now

just started training strongman i am only 15 and this was extremely helpful
Every time I feel my log press technique is feeling different I always come back to this vid
Me too!!
I’m a beginner .. mines will be here April 1st..: your very has some good information and I will use it to the fullest
I just started doing log 2 weeks ago. It's been super fun.
Brian!!! Thanks for the great information. I'm a little late to the party, but my gym just got a log and I'm pumped to start pressing that bitch. This video is so straight forward so non bs it is EXACTLY what I needed so thanks again man!
I built my own log over the weekend, out of 4x4s. Looking forward to using it this week, and I'll definitely be applying these tips!
That is awesome man! Way to be resourceful!

Hey... that's a pretty good idea for a youtube channel...
Hahaha Shhhh! That's content man!
Am I the o my one that get super excited from seeing the green pull up bar in every video. “Like shits about the get real” when he’s making a video in front of it!!
Great video Brian! I was wondering if you could make a video on increasing grip strength? Thanks!
Sure man, absolutely!
I'd definitely like to see this too

awesome video, how heavy it that log bar itself?
Thanks for the detailed video keep the the content flowing
definitely see a difference in the video and audio on this one brian.

Looks awesome! Great content as always! I think I'm gonna try to incorporate some strongman lifts into my routine due to your inspiration.
You absolutely should man, they will make your traditional lifts increase dramatically!

Hi Brian have you got a tutorial on the block press???
Dear Brian!
I watch your videos a lot and you are a big inspiration. Your videos are not only interesting to watch, but are also very helpful.
Would you consider doing a tutorial video about the trap bar?
Being from Seattle, I really like the Washington state flag in the background. 🙂🇺🇸
What specific muscles are worked during the log clean and press, and is it a good upper body mass builder?
Great video man! Thank you so much!
Any tips if we want to strict press the log, or is it same front rack and up and back?
Really great video
Any recommendations on what company to purchase a log from?
hey man! I've heard that the wooden log distributes weight unevenly. I assume different portions of it have higher densities than others, just like any piece of natural material. is that really true? if so,'how do you tr ain for that? just setting up more plates on one side of the regular log than on the other side perhaps?

Brian, how do you safely lower the log back down if you can't just drop it onto the ground? Do you reverse all the movements or do it some other way?
Hi can you use. Hang Clean of press as a strenght exercice in place of overhead press? thanks
Might be 5 yrs too late butttt.

There are a few different sizes, but it seems like most men's strongman competitions are done with a 12in diameter log.

+Ronnie Lunn well o don't know any gym with a log :/ I could make one lol
+Ham is Rodriguez but I might loose a thumb turns cut handles
I lost it when you demonstrated pouring water out of a bottle😂
Hahaha at least you watched this one! Not many people did!
Do you have a twin that does all your black and white videos segments? He seems cool.
Hahaha I'm not sure but I want to punch that guy in the face!
Put Power in your Clean?
POWER CLEAN!!!!!!!
Hahahaha indeed.
For a hardgainer, what are the benefits of this lift?
CH7 shift your focus from building to gaining strength and the size will follow. And this is an awesome movement to strengthen and build your shoulders and traps for sure!
Next video: Circus Dumbbells
I would do it if my technique was even at the "horrible" level. I haven't figured it out yet much less figured out how to teach it to people!
great video man! now I gotta go myself a log dammit! :-)
Hahaha they are pricey, but an awesome training tool. Plus many people's shoulders feel better pressing from the semi-supinated position, so it may be worth the investment!
7:30 surely given big Z's held the log record for over a decade now I should want to become Z?
How about some circus DB tutorials, just cause i know you hate them? ;)
(but also because i tried them for the first time today and felt like a gotdang buffoon)
Hahaha well, if my technique was even at the "horrible" level I might consider it...But it is not...I need to figure out how to do it first before I try to teach other people how! Hahaha
I wish I had a strong man gym near me
Thumbs down for wasting water
jk, good video, man!
Hahahaha thanks man!
!!!!
IRONL00
IRONL00 Check thissssss
I think that was a share, so thank you!
It was indeed! You're welcome :)
Why the icelandic flag?
That is amazingly not good... it misses out every important bit of cleaning a log!!! Plus your clean has some serious flaws... C'mon Brian your content is usually a lot, lot better than this!
Weird how people call this a "clean".
The new newer camera is great!
I don't have access to a log and I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing lol
They are pretty cool when it is going well, but horribly frustrating when they are not!
