My Father was a ground technician for the FW in the war. He even invented a device that would change the propeller angle automatically when the revs were getting too high, as I understood it, to prevent the problems discussed at about 10:00 min in this Video. Somewhere in my possesion are two photos of that device with a stamping of "Geheime Reichssache". I have some Albums of his time with JG 54
I played a fair bit of Aces over the Pacific back in the day. I always loved flying the P-38J with the dive brakes. You'd pop out of autopilot/fast travel at the end of a mission at 10k ft directly above the airfield. Open the brakes, chop throttles, and just lazily roll over and dive to the airstrip. Recover the dive at 1500 ft and drop onto the gear. Mad, but fun.
Good team effort guys, just to let you know, that MW50 was injected into super charger and increase boost pressure allowing to cool the combustion temp increasing AKI {octane) to advance timing to obtain absolute maximum power. Tank had 30 minute time, could only be used with G3 fuel, for short periods power increases over 500hp would be achieved, MW50 is hygroscopic, water will ruin the the engine oil and cause corrosion. All other fighter aircraft, used water injection for the same effect, nitrous oxide was used as well.
Best thing about this video is that it shows WHY the Allies were constantly moving air bases during WW2. Not just due to advancing forces, but the requirements of needing airbases for aircraft that were constantly having to adjust their abilities due to the amount of time of being able to DO their missions and actually return, let alone stay in the area to fight each other.
Could you do a "Where Are They Now" video on your former GR teammates? What ever happened to RC (tied for best-ever teammate with Simba), Cortana, Violet, and some others? All those others ... Cap, what have you done with them?
@@superflyguy4488 Kortana always had her own channel but her absence is more due to life priorities. The others are still around just kind of the same have other life priorities. but all come and go as they please lol.
You all did great. I would have probably chosen the Jug as well just because I have the most time in it. I love the Mossi as well but I have such a hard time taking off and landing that I don't trust myself in a race. My day would have been short for sure.
I don't think warbirds are boring at all. They are by far my favorite missions. The dogfights are way more interesting than the BVR engagements in the modern jets. There's something about seeing your enemy face to face. Plus, I think it requires more skill. They're just more elegant.
How about same race but in Korean War era aircraft? Although, you might have to extend the race….London to ? Idk if dcs has Moscow? Plus, maybe a landing in middle of the race for fuel too off?
That was a bit on the dull side... From the intro I thought it was going to be a race to see who got through the Eiffel Tower, while battling each other along the route!
The P47 has an engine bug, so it just breaks when it feels like it. Sometimes when after you turn it on. Generally in all ww2 sims the engines are far less durable then in real life. 5 minute max on WEP doesn't mean you'll break the engine as soon as you go over it. It means the engine will get more wear and tear. More job for the ground crew and finally shorter life until you need to just replace the engine. But since engine wear and tear isn't stimulated. Some time long ago someone decided to make ww2 engine brick if you went over max engine parameters just slightly. And this has stuck in all sims ever since. Because it wouldn't be interesting if simmers could abuse their engines. Since they just spawn in a new aircraft. If you read first hand accounts. Pilots usually just put in max power for however long the fight lasted be it 5, 15 or 25 minutes. I've only read a few instances of pilots fearing engine death from too long power use. And when we are talking 30 minutes of WEP in the P51 or P47. Not 5 minutes.
Very true. Very few examples of the R-2800 were required to last more than 50 hours during WW2 before being taken off for overhaul or the airframe being destroyed, so not many of them had time to build up cumulative swear and tear from hard aggressive use. In post-war airline and modern-day warbird use, run with mechanical sympathy and strict procedure, they can go 500 to 1000+ hours. Which is an important cost factor in civilian life, but didn't really matter in WW2
@harryspeakup8452 the people making the PTO combat pilot actually asked if the players want to keep the now 30 year old default warbird gameplay or if they wanted to let the player abuse their engine as the real pilots did. Most wanted to be able to abuse the engine, but ideally that it would have some consequences in a campaign, like less power from the engine in later missions. More aircraft down for maintenance so fewer could fly on next missions etc. I think that would be ideal and something DCS should implement (now that the F4 has some system for this. So we can fly properly and not worry about snowflake engines.
That's interesting. Did fighter pilots get assigned planes back then or was it just first come first served? Because wearing the engine out would probably be a lot more attractive if you weren't the one who had to fly it next time.
@@wombatgirl997 Pilots and crews naturally develop an attachment to an individual aircraft but it's not always possible to indulge that. So it depended on the time, place, organisation and type of operation. The USAAF was more organised around each pilot/crew having their own aircraft than the RAF, and within the RAF, bomber crews were more attached to a single aircraft than fighter pilots.
Whoever has a joystick that can also control rudder is laughing. Your turn and slip indicator were off to the side almost the entire time, indicating that your plan was flying just a bit sideways. This is usually due to the torque of the propeller. Typically you need right rudder when climbing and left when descending, but it depends on power setting and which way the propeller spins. You probably could have gone faster if you flew straight. Coordinated turns are important.

So I'm the one who proposed this, and I agree that it should be WW2 aircraft I'm also thinking there's a number of modern jets that couldn't fly under the tower successfully due to wingspan?
An excellent selection of aircraft and interesting race! Warbirds are not boring, modern jets are boring. And annoying. There is a constant barrage of beeps and alarms and all kinds of s*it blinking, well at least when Cap is flying, but it really gets my blood pressure through the roof and then you push a few buttons and everything dies and you didn't even see them. I hate modern anything. So thanks guys, this was awesome :)
Cap, how about you and the team defend a capital against 100 bombers and or fighters(set to ace). The team members get only 3 lives and their out. Most kills vs the enemy wins. You could make this modern, WWII, WWI, your choice.

God I wish DCS had more warbirds. I'd love to see a Hellcat, Zero, P-38 and later era Spitfire in this race
I'd be up for any of them you mentioned, but a P-38 in "Marge" livery? Chef's kiss.
Also a F4U Corsair would be great

to land an FW190 I recommend a wheels down first approach

Really enjoyed this one. Reminded me of Top Gears race from Basel to Blackpool for some reason.
Basel to Blackpool on one tank of fuel,no refueling.
Warbird are amazing machines you all did great DCnewcoach
love watching warbirds. this was cool. endurance then a fight.
That was very silly and more fun to watch than I thought it would be
Thanks!
Enjoyed this enormously. Skill fights are awesome!
This sounds like a WW2 version of the movie, "Those Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines" adding a dogfight at the end.
Cap won the dogfight in the Dora.... wow
I'm scared too...
I notice on the list of planes in Cap's cockpit it says Lancester. Never heard of it.
Maybe it means the Lancaster bomber? I saw it too
That is the wingspan of British planes, for setting the German gunsight.

Every time you move the stick the alerons move into the airstream and add a bunch of drag. Trimming would have added a noticeable amount of top speed.
