Today we ask take another look at the question whether a US aerial strike could wipe out the entire Iranian Navy in a single day. We start with a flotilla of US Arleigh Burke Destroyers firing SM-6 missiles, then two flights of F-35 Lightning 5th Gen jets with AGM-158C LRASM anti-ship missiles, then send in the FA-18, F-16 and F-15E jets to mop up.

@@PeterMuskrat6968 I can't say where the Michael Murphy is being deployed, it's currently in San Diego re supplying and it's in the fleet that's replacing the Eisenhower in the Med and the Red sea. The recent drone attack is a concern but the Arleigh Burkes are absolute beasts... Thank you for the comment and the thoughts, I appreciate it.

It might have been slightly cheaper to use Hellfire on the PT's, and even the old harpoons might be enough on the corvettes, frigates and other larger ships.
Not a chance. The US ships that are simulating the Iranian ships would shoot down all Harpoons and/or Hellfire's. Has to be stealth. And the smaller patrol craft would be tough for a Harpoon to lock onto. LGB's are the ticket. The only platform in DCS that can fire the Hellfire is the Reaper drone, the Predator drone and the Apache. Not fast enough for those distances.
@@valuedhumanoid6574 The bigger ships might be able to shoot down the harpoons, they are just not the newest tech there is so some might come through. The PT-boats should have a problem with the hellfires, and the choppers should not go near the bigger ships as they are vulnerable.
There is a reason the 🇬🇧 got rid of that awful missile on the Apache and went with Brimstone...Now we've had to go with it on the new batch..

My god, I can't get enough of this content. I'm completely emersed in this. It's every war film I've ever wanted to see made, with educational qualities
I can appreciate the effort, but the main thing to remember is that DCS weapons are not known for their realistic effects. Also, the latest US weaponry capability is still classified in regards to what upgrades have been done. AND the game's hit-boxes are not the greatest. A HARM can take out the radar on a missile frigate and thereby make it pretty much useless against air threats, something DCS fails to allow.
In any major conflict against Iran's navy the US might take some losses, but there would be no Iranian navy afterwards.
I don't think they even take losses, the US navy isn't going to even be in range lol the F-35 is basically invisible to everyone but China so they would just fly a couple sorties and launch cruise missiles from hundreds of miles away and call it a day. There's no chance anyone even knows what's happening until they are already exploding. The only scenario where Iran even has a shot is if the US is forced to engage quickly at close range which simply wouldn't happen

Being fair, unless the frigate is unsupported, the loss of one ship's radar array wouldnt mean they are incapable of air defence. Aegis can exchange target data between ships.
In any major conflict, the Iranian Navy would be almost completely irrelevant. Iran would launch massive waves of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Their navy and air force, if they even deployed at all, would basically just serve to distract US/allied forces from the main threats.

Can you imagine what the Iranian radio channels would sound like when the first wave from the Arleigh Burkes starts assigning those fast attack boats to submarine duty?
The crazy thing is that the F-35 is capable of utilizing ship cruise missiles to attack targets. So once the ships are taken care of, F-35s would be lighting up any military structure in Iran and having them destroyed.
It would be very busy, frantic, and loud....but would quickly calm down to nearly nothing.
@8:42 SM-2 Block IIIC, deployed on Arleigh Burke DDGs beginning 2021, are indeed OTH capable as they incorporate the same active terminal guidance seeker as the SM-6.

@@surters my only point is new ships are not made for close quarter fighting. Though if we ever do this on a navl sim instead of flight it may be able to actually have the armor function as armor.
Small rounds would just bounce off. Still interested in seeing what missile would do.
So if you have a ship modeler , here is basic what id want from a modern Montana to bring it up to speed. Firstly armor belt of at least 16" equivalent. The 4 triple barrel 16" main gun turrets get a higher caliber and or longer barrels. Replace all heavy aa guns with sea wiz. Keep the double 5" turrets but maybe Replace one or two with sea ram launchers . Find a way to fit harpoon missile launchers possibly the size of Arleigh Burke if not double. Take the double smoke funal to one if possible to free up room for box launchers as well as a mid ships behind turrets 3 hella pad and bay for two bird. Replace all fixed wing aircraft with multiple drones. If possible get its speed up to 35 knots

@@tetraxis3011 From shore batteries that would be smoked by F-35s long before the ships were in range of them. Remember how many anti-air missiles Saddam had prior to Desert Storm? He had quite a lot, keyword is had because the US air campaign made them disappear.

I DID go to that DISCORD, I DID install DCS. I DID get horrified by all the controls it takes to actually be a Warfighter Aviator. I DID watch super cool Netherlands dude fly with keyboard. But, I DID get totally scared to have to learn SOOOO much at my age, spend so much to be able to just fly out and dumps a bunch of CBU-97s on top of a bunch of knot heads and enjoy all the boom booms. Would love to see what the 16 MQ-9B Protector that the UK has ordered armed with Brimstones would make of that boat swarm as its the kind of threat they are designed to deal with (armour/small boat swarms). I mean with a murder spec you could put 9 triple Brimstone launch rails on each or 6 triple launch rails and 3 Paveway IV's!

Those manpads may be able to go 3-4 miles in an arc and hit a low/slow flying jet or helicopter. But I'd be very surprised if they can go half that vertically. 10-12k feet should keep most jets pretty safe from something like that.
As long as you aren't right over the launcher. That 20k ceiling only applies above the launcher because of course, the engagement zone is shaped like a dome

Some better improvements for realism: the Iranian Navy won’t be clumped together so maybe have them at their bases with the larger vessels in a forward posture. Also lol at SM-6 fired on patrol boats.

I have to say when I was on the Submarines (US) we were always super fast in taking off our missiles (non-nuke) as soon as we came into port. We always joked there weren't enough missiles to go around and I still believe that. With Tomahawks costing 1 Million each you can bet we don't have thousands sitting around.

Hey Cap, thanks for the entertainment as always. Just a quick note from the briefing, and I never mentioned this before, but I'm pretty sure the F-35 will be limited to 2x LRASM. However, with the 1,000 F-35 just off the line (global militiaries), that just means the USAF would effectively double the jets versus the amount in your videos carrying four. Perhaps worth a comment during the brief for realism sake, but I don't think it's worth additional work on your end. Thanks!

I appreciate the effort you put in to set-up the scenario, but to cluster the enemy ships by class is not only unrealistic, it is also far to easy to cluster the appropriate weapons accordingly.
An interesting scenario might be the Iranian revolutionary guard vs their conventional military or other countries that have a two teir military

Hey I’m new to DCS, and I have a question. How do I make the AI fire immediately? If I’m fighting an F-15, it won’t shoot me from 100 miles, 25 miles or even 5 miles. It waits until it can use sidewinders and is super close. I should never make it to the merge in a Frogfoot against anything like an F-15. I’ve got everything on ace skill as well.

Al Dhafra Air base is in the middle of nowhere in the Abu Dhabi desert. US has every asset you can imagine stationed there. When I was there in 2016 they were still flying missions almost daily like clock work. There is so much more shit going on than you can even imagine. I have to leave it at that. One interesting thing was watching the Emir's son fly around like a maniac in his F-16 every day. Very good air show pilot. F-16 can maneuver way more than ever displayed at airshows I've watched.
DFACs had great food though. Just not much to do unless you have a pass to go off base into the city. Beautiful and clean. Great people of all nations and countless malls, Ferrari world, clubs, and places to eat.
When I saw the swarm of fast attach boats, my first thought was 'A GBU-43 MOAB or three could do a lot of damage there...' Would have been cheaper than all those SMs

smallest iranian boats are equipped with automated ens keeping their distance from objects by 5+ miles, making those mk38s shoot lots of blanks, they fire with a 107 mm mrls(practically rockets) and bow mounted dshk 12.7 mm hmg . oh yeah baby, you gots yourself a wiiiiinner, lol

Arleigh Burke Destroyers firing ASMs from VLS is a mod? If I try ship vs ship with awacs in mission editor AB's shoot only their harpoons.
The LRASM missile seems to share a visual profile of the Yf-23. At least from some aspect angles.
This game reminds me alot of digital image design f-22 air dominance fighter with red sea operations.
Next time, add more AI jets the the USAF, and have the players instead flying Iranian Tombcats to defend the fleet.....
Also gotta love the value for money - $600m worth of anti aircraft missiles to splash $17m worth of Boghammars...

My question: was the CWIS on the russian corvette stand-ins disabled? Were they disabled on the OHPs too? And if not, Why did they not Engage the LASRMs?
They don't have the ability to track the LRASM due to its small RCS and low altitude.
If was in command of Iran's naval defense. I have a into flotillas lead by a frigate or corvette. then uses by lighter FAC a defensive screen.
Would Maverick missiles have a big enough bang to take out the speedboat type enemies? If so, I am thinking you could technically carry more "bombs" than something laser guided?
Yes, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Morvarid, two (ironically) Iranian F-4 Phantoms armed with 6 Mavericks each managed to sink 7 Iraqi ships, 3 Osa II's (235 t each), and 4 P-4's (24 t each).
i.e. with those numbers, larger PT boats (far larger than the speedboats in this simulation) require service from at the absolute most, 2 missiles each, possibly only one each.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't the Arleigh Burkes engage with 5" guns after firing missiles and going after the remaining targets? Granted they would have to move at flank speed to get into range, but I hope the AI does this.

I would like to see less Flight III's in the future. Unless the combat scenario is best vs best, it's not super likely there would be any, especially not multiple, flight III's. I's and II's are still very capable, but it adds just a little more accuracy.

We war gamed this a lot in my 21yrs and a squad of 22’s did without a single loss every time
imagine being some conscript on an Iranian dingy with machine guns when a harpoon missile more expensive than the boat blows you outta the water damn hard life
Typically, the USN would also have at least one CSG in the vicinity (accompanied by 1 Ticonderoga, and 3-4 DDGs, and sometimes 1-2 SSNs) with about 12-24x Super Hornets for CAP/Strike, 4 Growlers for SEAD, and 24x F35s (ideal). There also might be an ESG (Expeditionary Strike Group) with a large deck amphib with about 12x AV8B/F35B. All that firepower alone would make things very "proportional".
