I dragged out my mower, same one, first time this season filled up the gas, primed it gave it a pull and it started right up. The only problem was I was still holding the cord. It had broken in exactly the same place, as you point out it is a poor design. Went looking on UA-cam for a video, so that I wasn't playing it by ear. Luckily I quickly found yours and I'm sure it saved me a fair bit of time not having to "discover" as I went. . Thank you very much for taking the time to make this.
You Sir, are a life saver! In the middle of mowing my cable broke. You were repairing the same model of mower I own. Thank you for creating this for those of us that are "mechanically challenged" and by that I mean it's a challenge for a mechanic to pry open my wallet.
I find I always hit your vids before bed. They are the perfect way to unwind. Man I miss having a place to work on these sort of things. I live in an apartment now.
Great video...I need you as a neighbor! I had to do a similar repair on that same model 10586 mower today. On mine the original pull cord looked perfect but still didn't retract fully. Hardware store told me the starter spring had failed and was not serviceable and sold me a new starter. Much higher price than off the web, but they had it in stock. The store's advice and instant service was way better than me just replacing the cord and having that not be the problem. Especially since it was a 2 hour drive to my property. One of the tricky parts is getting all the debris out of those green cowling holes so your hex driver can grip those bolts. Hardware guy told me Lawn Boy stopped using those little lead clamps on the cord because they caused a lot of the cord failures.
Thank You my friend for this exceptional video. You made me fix my problem in an hour on what could have taken me a whole day figuring this out (loading the rope inside the the tecumseh recoil):)
Thanks for the vid. I don't have to buy a new lawnmower now. I did find a short cut though. I just used the old string, taped it to a length of shoe string which easily pulled into the recoiler the opposite way. Outside to in rather than inside to out. I live pretty rural, so its a bit of a drive to go buy a new string and handle, and the old string would be quite difficult to remove from the existing handle. (cut my finger trying to get it out). But the way I did it worked perfectly. Loved the blooper. Story of my life.
Thanks Roadking -- Other than the pain of removing the unit (ariens snowblower--the screws were hard to get at!), it went well. Your instructions were great.
Great video that made my day to replace the exact problem with my Lawn Boy Starter Rope..............wish he could show how to get the self propel working again. Replace the belt and traction control cable and not luck.
Thanks man! I have this same exact Lawnboy 10862 mower and I'm just about to order a new cord and rewind pulley for mine. Thank you very much for this video and info on how to perform this repair!
You are funny! "Made in China. That's probably why you went out of business." I totally agree w/ you brother! Thanks for this detailed video. You're the best!
Good stuff!! Helped me fix one of those Chinese jobbies myself. Same exact model so must me a POS set up.....I wonder how much more of that engine is Chinese made...thanks for the video!
It was a nice 6hp mower. I replaced the a lot of parts over the years like carb, ignition coil... The direct drive was failing and the ignition pull handle broke. So we got a new mower and it’s a Honda. I don’t think it’s powerful like this lawnboy
Time to watch 13 minutes Time to select tools 2 minutes Time to repair 10 minutes Cost zero. Value absolutely priceless When the pull cord snapped yesterday I was to say the least a little upset and I had only just started to cut the grass. Off to finish what I started yesterday thanks 805Roadking
Great video 805ROADKING! Very helpful in replacing the rope. Having one other problem. When I pull the rope to engage, the dogs do not come out. Do you think I need new spring dogs? Or could it be another problem. Thanks.
Cool buddy, great stuff as always. Very hot here over 105 degrees, can we say sweat to death. hahaha Just finished taking motor transmission and exhaust out of my camaro, alot of hard work man, i will make a video soon when i get it back home from friends workshop. Peace
Well that sucks!!! I should have watched your video before I just 'gave' $45 to a shop to replace the pull cord on my Lawnboy. I have the exact model. Lesson learned.
