I dragged out my mower, same one, first time this season filled up the gas, primed it gave it a pull and it started right up.
The only problem was I was still holding the cord.
It had broken in exactly the same place, as you point out it is a poor design.
Went looking on UA-cam for a video, so that I wasn't playing it by ear.
Luckily I quickly found yours and I'm sure it saved me a fair bit of time not having to "discover" as I went.
    .
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this.

Thanks Jeff!! Not only were the old ones a PITA but also dangerous as hell to replace!!☺

You Sir, are a life saver! In the middle of mowing my cable broke. You were repairing the same model of mower I own. Thank you for creating this for those of us that are "mechanically challenged" and by that I mean it's a challenge for a mechanic to pry open my wallet.

Great video...I need you as a neighbor! I had to do a similar repair on that same model 10586 mower today. On mine the original pull cord looked perfect but still didn't retract fully. Hardware store told me the starter spring had failed and was not serviceable and sold me a new starter. Much higher price than off the web, but they had it in stock. The store's advice and instant service was way better than me just replacing the cord and having that not be the problem. Especially since it was a 2 hour drive to my property. One of the tricky parts is getting all the debris out of those green cowling holes so your hex driver can grip those bolts.
Hardware guy told me Lawn Boy stopped using those little lead clamps on the cord because they caused a lot of the cord failures.

Thanks for the vid. I don't have to buy a new lawnmower now. I did find a short cut though. I just used the old string, taped it to a length of shoe string which easily pulled into the recoiler the opposite way. Outside to in rather than inside to out. I live pretty rural, so its a bit of a drive to go buy a new string and handle, and the old string would be quite difficult to remove from the existing handle. (cut my finger trying to get it out). But the way I did it worked perfectly. Loved the blooper. Story of my life.

It was a nice 6hp mower. I replaced the a lot of parts over the years like carb, ignition coil... The direct drive was failing and the ignition pull handle broke. So we got a new mower and it’s a Honda. I don’t think it’s powerful like this lawnboy

    Time to watch 13 minutes
Time to select tools 2 minutes
    Time to repair 10 minutes
    Cost zero.
    Value absolutely priceless
When the pull cord snapped yesterday
I was to say the least a little upset
and I had only just started to cut the grass.
Off to finish what I started yesterday thanks 805Roadking
