This is a pitch reel put together by Adam “Mojo” Leibowitz, a CGI artist and effects supervisor whose impressive resume includes work on Babylon 5, Serenity, Star Trek: Voyager, the 2001 restoration of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and - appropriately enough - Moore’s Sci-Fi Channel incarnation of Battlestar Galactica. Lebowitz created the reel around the time the Original Series restorations were happening, and he used it to pitch the idea of a similar BSG upgrade to Syfy and Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

I would definitely buy a "remastered" version of the series if one was created.

It was all done in Lightwave. darthmojo.wordpress.com/2009/10/08/coolest-cgi/ Sadly, Universal later decided not to do it due to the cost of reworking 22 episodes of custom FX shots - So this little clip will probably forever be one of a kind.
I like that the artist included a shot of the Vipers coming out of the launch tubes. Back when this show was on the air, I never knew exactly where they were supposed to be launching from. It always just showed them flying out on an angle from the landing bays.
Better than the reboot version which has someone inside launch control pressing buttons to launch the Vipers like they would on a modern day aircraft carrier. In the original series, the Vipers turbo boosted themselves out of the flight pods.

That's what this pitch reel was about. NBC-Uni was interested, but wanted Mojo to only do the pilot and the two-part episodes. Then it was cut back to only The Living Legend. Then they decided they didn't want to spend the money. A second proposal was made by Dale Long following the restoration of the Galactica model for Gary Canavo in 2014. Universal was already deep into the 2K remaster of the series for the Blu-ray and wasn't interested.
@@dalethelander3781 A crying shame. With some of the drek they do spend money on these days....how much more proof do they need of the staying power of the original BSG?
I love how the new effects mixed with the old ones pretty seamlessly. The original series had great effects for the 1970's, but it grew repetitive seeing the same shots over and over again over the course of the series, as their budget didn't allow the creation of many new effects each week. The tankers in this episode were repurposed effects from the first episode. I think adding new effects to compliment the old ones would have been a great way to enhance a series restoration.

Love this! It’s amazing the simple act of making the Vipers go faster and doing barrel rolls can have a profound difference in feel of if. The cgi makes me wish this pitch would have gotten the green light. I feel stupid admitting this but it took till the mid 2000’s to realize the Vipers launched from the tubes at an angle from the middle of the flight deck in the original show I always assumed, at that time they launched from the front of the flight pod and landed in the rear of them like an aircraft carrier today.
You know, that's exactly how I assumed the Vipers took off and landed; shooting out forwards from the nacelle-like outriggers and returning through their rear-facing openings. I wonder how much of a nuisance it would've been to bring in the Vipers, have mechanics do checks, make repairs, refuel them, then haul them to the perpendicular launch tubes and strap them in for the next sortie.
That's exactly what I thought too and I was the biggest fan as a kid. It doesn't make the slightest sense in hindsight because you can see the tube they launch from! lol.
That's so very well done. I wish the whole series could get that treatment. The original show reused so much footage - especially during battle scenes. It's understandable, but also a shame. @@altha-rf1et Am I now? I liked THIS version because of the added special effects that just weren't available back in the late 70's. I was a kid back then so I saw this series when It was freshly made and released on ABC on Sunday nights.
Wow! Well done!
Just as a suggestion. Seems like there are plenty of side shots with the pilots. Seems like you could use a shot like that to do a push-in or pull-out, rotoscoping the pilot onto a 3d model. Might be a way to connect the actors to the action.
Fantastic work!
The Remade of BSG is Super cool. I remember this old 📺 show. STAR TREK the 1960 s was also redo.
Redo BSG is great 👍👍
I get chills watching the update.
This awesome. Thank you sharing it.
Lloyd Bridges was the fracking master. Miss that actor.
I have only 1 word for this - COOL!
Love somebody to do this fx upgrade to the last starfighter!!!!!
