It's a "fret wrap" if you keep it wrapped behind the nut it helps eliminate unwanted overtones and prevents that little part of the string from resonating all the time when you are playing. It makes a huge difference when you are playing with distortion especially if you are playing a melodic yet fast solo. In this case it also helps with the tracking on the synth because there are less overtones being generated to confuse the divided pickup.
