Hi! My name is Ben. I am a musician, composer, instructor, and performer with connections in Western Massachusetts, Hartford area Connecticut, and Albany New York. I play a variety of instruments but focus mostly on electric guitar and electric bass. Here you will find clips of my playing including improvisations, original music, covers, fretless guitar music, and 13 pin guitar synth content.
Birds of Fire
Enjoy this video of me performing "Birds of Fire" by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
This was a challenging song to learn, play, and record. It features a strange time signature of 18/8. John McLaughlin is one of my favorite guitar players so it is exciting to be able to play one of his finest pieces in a band!.
"Birds of Fire" is the first track on Mahavishnu Orchestra's 1973 album of the same name. "Birds of Fire" is an example of instrumental progressive rock and jazz fusion. The piece takes influence from some ideas found in Indian classical music. Most of the song involves 2 seventh chords moving back and fourth felt in a 2+3+2+3+2+3+3 pulse while the bassline is felt in a 3+3+2+3+3+2+2 pulse.
Accompaniment:
Joey Sicard - electric bass
Ellen Jacobson - drums
Dylan Walter - piano
Recording:
Rachel D'Amico - filming and editing
Dylan Walter - audio recording and mixing

Here is a live studio recording of my original jazz tune "Speakeasy Waltz". This was composed as a real book/jazz standard style tune. Being that some of the piece is in 5/4 it feels like a "drunken waltz" hence the title. Ensemble performance of me playing "Impressions" by John Coltrane with a small ensemble. I interpreted this piece in an afro-cuban 6/8 groove and added an original intro. "Impressions" was written by Coltrane in the early 1960s and played live numerous times. It is an example of a modal jazz piece and consists of only 2 chords outlining D dorian and Eb dorian. "After the End" - Roland GR-55 guitar synth
This is a real standout breakout piece!
Thank you! :-)
👍
This is great 👍 Could you make a video or give a link to a tutorial on how to synthesize electric guitar?
I am using a Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer. You have to have a divided pickup and 13 pin output on your guitar to use that unit and many other Roland units. Most guitars do not have one built in so they sell a pickup called the Roland GK-3 that you can attach to most guitars (you can kind of see it behind the bridge of my guitar). This is the synth I am using in this video www.roland.com/us/products/gr-55/ there are many other ones that use 13pin and MIDI such as the Roland VG99, Boss GP-10 and SY1000. There are also some that use a normal guitar out from magnetic pickups like the Source Audio C4 and Boss SY300. Another option would be computer plugins. I only have experience with the GR55 though. Maybe one day when I know more about all this I will make a video explaining it but I do not want to become a gear review channel.
Tell me, what is the name of this thing that is in place of the mediator?
Hmm, I'm not sure what you mean by the "mediator", could there be a different name for that? Are you referring to the middle pickup? I removed the middle pickup on this guitar because it was interfering with the sustainer, so now there's just a hole there with wires.

John says it's time for you to start a band. Where can we see you play these days?
@@katherinedesantis9177 I keep trying to start a band but I struggle to make it work with everyone's schedule and find people who can keep up/are invested in going to rehearsals and being available for shows. I've been constantly trying to make that work for years. It's ridiculously hard to get a band going these days. I'm trying to move to Boston ma area in the next couple months because there are a lot of serious musicians there and there is a big prog scene.

Thank you. I’ll make sure they play this at my funeral, so that I can be resurrected.
I'm honored to be a part of your reanimation!
This rules, man. Do you have tabs for it you could share?
Thanks! I do not have tabs unfortunately, this was done spontaneously. Not improvised, but I wrote, rehearsed, and recorded it in less than 2 hrs, all in 1 sitting so I never needed to notate it. I don't usually tab my music out in general, I usually record it and leave notes about what keys/chords/voicings I am using and then relearn it by ear. Sometimes I score things out in sheet music notation, but I've never done so with tabs. I'm flattered that you want to learn the song and sorry I cannot be more helpful, but its fairly simple and you could probably learn by ear/watching my hands! It's done in standard tuning, all in B minor (with some raised 7th). 4 different parts- the second part walks up the chords i > ii* > III > iv > V and they are all voiced R,5,3. The third part walks down chords i > #vii* > VI > V using root position arpeggios played descending, pretty much your basic sweep patterns. The drone part at the end, I am sustaining a low B and F# on the 2 lowest strings and then improvising on the D string. The GR-55 has a footswitch that allows me to sustain certain strings even if I am not playing that string anymore, so sometimes you will hear a string I am not playing, but it isn't just an open string. -Good luck!!!
This is so awesome!!!
Sounds prety dark mate!

Would love to make one! I'm trying to collect my ideas and hammer them into full length songs that are not just me noodling for 5 minutes at a time. Hopeful to have at least SOMETHING officially released within the next 12 months!

There is only uneven tension if you don't restring with proper gauges for NST...
I see, I've never actually tuned a guitar to NST, I've only ever used a divided pickup and guitar synth. I haven't done much with this tuning so never felt like setting a guitar up for it long term

Thinking about getting this guitar. Just wondering about the neck. I've been playing strats for a bit.
I like it more than the strat necks I've played, and I've played several different American Strats. The fretwork is fantastic, I love how big the frets are and the way they are shaped. The shape of the neck is extremely comfortable to me, it is one of my most favorite necks I've ever played, probably the most comfortable of them all. There are several versions of the AZ Prestige and I believe all of them have the same neck profile but with different pickups and body styles (including more strat style layouts). If you can find some sort of AZ Prestige in a store then try the neck first. I played 2 different AZ guitars before getting this one just to feel how the neck is. It is not thin and flat like Ibanez wizard necks, it is a medium thickness and it is round. It's closer in feeling to a Suhr than an RG. Doesn't feel remarkably thick or thin, right in the middle.
@Benjamin K Rutledge awsome I was looking premiums but every say go for the az because the neck is perfect and slick. I wish they had cooler colors but I don't even care I just want a favorite.
@Benjamin K Rutledge honestly I was thinking about getting the Krys10 but I just have a feeling this one is better
@@benjaminkrutledge7425 I just ordered it from sweatwater.
@@huntersmall6162 congrats man, you won't regret it. The AZ series are fantastic guitars. As for the Krys (that's the Scott Lepage one right??) It is an AZ body and AZ necks, just has different electronics. They would have the same contours and neck profile, just different styling and his custom Fishman pickups and switching. Though I believe all the Polyphia signature AZ guitars (Scott and Tim's) have all been Premium grade. This is the step below Prestige in the Ibanez line. They are still very nice professional instruments built to a high standard, but mine is a Prestige which is the handmade in Japan series, they are very high quality and extremely natural to play. A KRYS or other AZ premium would still be a great instrument but a moderate step down from the AZ Prestige.
How is the tuning stability and thé whammy
Mine has been very good. Better than most strat style whammys. Not quite as good as a well set up double locking system, but less high maintenance.

Cool! Did you cover the fretboard with epoxy or it's just wood?
I bought it from someone who converted it. I believe there is some kind of epoxy on the fingerboard, as it is very smooth and don't feel a noticable disruption in smoothness over where the frets were. Though the marks are still visible.
@@benjaminkrutledge7425 Thanks a lot! =)
I've heard a lot about the Harley Bentons from them being awesome to awful. Personally I've never gotten to play one so I've been skeptical of their worth. It's good to hear they have good fretwork because that's big for low priced instruments. Might just have to get one myself.
I'm certainly a Harley Benton fan. I have 2 Harley Bentons and enjoy them both: the Fusion III HSH Roasted from the video and a TE-62 DB (basically a double bound standard Telecaster). . The Fusion was the first one, I got it last year in September and it has since been my main guitar along with my Epiphone Les Paul. It feels very nice to play and has an excellent neck with stellar fretwork. Though the neck is considerably thicker and rounder than you would expect from a modern superstrat. It has a Wilkinson 2 point vibrato bridge which is pretty stable but it does not flutter at all despite being set up to float. As I said in the description, the pickups and potentiometers are not that good but they work just fine and its gig ready out of the box. For a $400 guitar that has a roasted neck, stainless frets, locking tuners, and great craftsmanship I don't think mediocre pickups is a serious issue especially since so many guitarists hotrod their pickups now. I'm actually having custom pickups made for this guitar by Glastonbury Pickups, but they are not in the guitar yet. It doesn't play as smoothly as a high end Charvel DK or Ibanez AZ which it is clearly modeled after but still a fantastic guitar for less than a fourth the price of either of those. I would say this guitar is about as good as some of the lower level American made Fender guitars. . The TE-62 I got when they were released earlier this year. I didn't have any guitars with only single coils and I wanted to have a guitar that makes tele sounds, though since I am usually into more modern guitars I did not want to spend big bucks on a nice Fender. I think the TE-62 fit what I needed almost perfectly and for only $140. The neck pickup is pretty good but the bridge pickup is very brittle sounding (maybe that's just a telecaster thing). My one big complaint with that guitar is that it has small frets where as I prefer jumbo frets but that's a personal preference. I use that guitar a lot for when I am teaching lessons because it is a hardtail and is a durable, simple design. I would say it is a bit better than a Fender Player Series Mexican made Telecaster. . Nothing but love for Harley Benton from me- they are leagues ahead of any other budget brand guitars I have played and just as good as most intermediate guitars if not better. Their price is unbeatable, but they are not quite as good a high end American or Japanese made guitar with a hand made neck.
how absolutely gorgeous
Thank you!!!! :-)
