Photographer’s open-floor glass home perches over Canadian lake

- To create a photography studio with maximum daylight, Larry Williams built a glasshouse. Doubling as a boat garage (the lower floor), it hugs the lake's edge. Viewed from the inside, the outside world tumbles in: the wake of a powerboat ripples up to the window, kayakers wave as they pass, a child jumps from the dock.
Toward the back of the house, granite invades the view: the home is built on top of the Canadian Shield- a swath of ancient rock stretching across half of Canada. Williams speaks proudly of the 300 million-year-old limestone and 3 billion-year-old granite outside his door.
To heat and cool the home, architect Pat Hanson relied on a geothermal system: tubes of water snake into the lake to benefit from the lake floor’s nearly constant year-round temperature. In summer, the water in the closed-loop system is cooled by the lake and in winter it is warmed. The granite floor acts as a heat sink to slowly radiate the sun’s energy through the house during the evening. The white roof reflects light and heat to keep the place cool during summer.
To create a home inside four walls of glass, Hanson placed the domestic functions inside a floating cube supported by steel beams so as not to touch the walls. Downstairs, it houses the kitchen and guest bath and upstairs, an open bedroom. The stairway is bathed in Corian which continues upstairs with a Corian bathtub and bed structure doubling as sculpture. Large sliding fritted glass doors close to provide privacy for the mezzanine bedroom, though are typically left open to allow for natural ventilation.

I waited a long time to edit this one because I was afraid it would be misunderstood. I too love the cozy cottage feel, but at this location this home makes sense. From the inside, you don't notice the glass or steel beams supporting it, but you feel a part of the landscape. As we filmed, we could have been out on the dock watching my kids swim or sunning on the granite. The walls or any outdoor/indoor barrier nearly dissolve.
No need to justify. This is a thoughtfully planned and relatively modest home compared to the gross mansions going up across Ontario's cottage country.
New buildings are supposed to look as they are built today and can live hopefully a very long time.
I can never understand why building something to look as if it if 100 years old. Doesn't make any intellectual sense at all. Being one with nature has nothing to do with old looking architecture. I do respect some people like that style and I also like old buildings. But when building a new house...
I also sometimes see comments like "finally a house with personality" when the interior is cluttered with stuff.
Now see, thing is, some people doesn't need a lot of things. Some people doesn't need a lot of colour. They simply has a lower mental threshold. The interior still reflects more than well this person and probably has more character than the cluttered bohemian chic house often referred to as warm and personal.
One of the more Graceful & thoughtful executions of the glass house design.
His love of granite on the site & depending on the lighting, I bet he can create some stunning shots from the 'pod' of a treasured subject. Imagine sunrise & sunsets as daily cornerstones. The aurora or moon rise or timelapse of the milky way. This space is a photographers paradise indeed.
Laughing Man What’s the difference between this house and building a farmhouse in the same spot? They both still use up the space. I’d much rather live in this house than a 6,000 sq ft monstrosity.
You have a beautiful family. Your children are so fortunate to have you two parents. 🙏🏼
I would love to be here during a big thunderstorm. You would feel like you’re outside. 😍
The way you film and let the owner guide us through their house makes it really feel like we're right there with you! You make it seem effortless and natural but I'm sure you've put a lot of thought behind it. A beautiful space, not sure about the toilet in the bedroom though.
So true.
Charles Street what he said!
I will be the 25 person to comment on the toilet location!
But I will say, There is something sexy about that big bathtub at the head of the bed..... And then the toilet shows up to the party and ruined the vibe! To each their own I reckon.
Totally agree loved the bathtub so big luxurious and nice to be clean in the bedroom but not with a fekin arsey toilet
just use toilet downstairs garl!
Kirsten, I love seeing and hearing your beautiful children in your beautiful and interesting videos. Well done, on every level.
I really liked the house. They went all the way to hide oven, and other things (which I admire), and then they put toilet in the middle of the bedroom. Why?
It's not in the bedroom.
@@ChrisPage68 how would you call the room with bed in it?
@@9rafaela9 I guess bathroom in this case...
@@9rafaela9 Roombed
Beautiful place but I’d rather not have a toilet next to my bed/so exposed.
"we thought of everything" yet we decided to put a toilet in the middle of the bedroom ?
Not any weirder than putting a bathroom with every bedroom as some do : )
Bathroom!
Honestly that was their only mistake, they could have hide it like they did with the shower
Now I'm thinkig the guy may have a fetish of some sort
Open view pooping is pretty relaxing.... best one you'll take is in the woods.
Love the house but have to wonder at the "private shower" but the very "open" loo???
no one really wanted to stare at your body honestly.
The toilet just above the bed and tub is cringeworthy....
I agree...imagine you're lying in bed and your partner takes a dump!!! No to mention the smell of freshly laid feces wafting into the bedroom and down into the kitchen and living room area. Such horrendous architectural design to an otherwise aesthetic pleasing home.
Totally agree the toilet should have been in an enclosure like the shower was. It looks like an after thought and not planned. Imagine your male partner having a wee with a view. Eurgh
100%
Socially and emotionally devastating. That should be the one private space!
@@jmk1962 maybe that's their thing 😜
This is one of the most elegant women I have ever seen on youtube. Really excellent communication and presentation of a wonderful house. Kudos to the couple for having found each other.
I really appreciate the art of this home. It's actually a piece of modern art in place in the landscape. Having said that, I am stunned that they have the toilet in the middle of the bedroom. They went to ultimate trouble with every detail, enclosing the shower "for privacy", but the toilet stands out like a sore thumb without a shred of privacy in a shared bedroom space?
I would have swapped the Toilet with their Shower upstairs.
If you take a stinky poo I'd want that contained, not absorbed by the bed.
I feel like there is enough privacy as I feel only the owners/parents would use the upper room and the lower areas are the commons for everyone else.
I thought it was funny they have amenities for large gatherings - the large dinner table, patio, outdoor activities, yet thought about how awkward it would be for guests to use the restroom.
I agree with you on that toilet comment. I prefer private baths too.
@@amorag59 - Guests would use the downstairs bathroom, but will not e staying over night as there wasn't even a sofa bed let alone a guest room. Guess they don't have many friends or family.
That is pure privacy... if you're alone in the house 🤓!
You can hear the peace in their voices. An absolutely phenomenal home. Thank you for sharing. 💜
I am a former homebuilder who typically loathes cold, contemporary architecture. This house, in this idyllic setting, is absolutely magnificent! It does its utmost to invite the exterior splendor. And with its geothermal, it's even eco-friendly. Yeah, I could live there. Thanks, Kirsten, for another fabulous tour.
Just another CREATIVE and PECULIAR concept that WOWS your eyes... Thanks for sharing..
"Look how natural everything looks"
Literally a glass box on top of the rocks formation.
I love the statue of the kid sitting on a table in the living room. Beautiful statues in this space.
Wow. This is wonderful. To be by the water. What a beautiful way to live in nature. I'm Canadian and this couple has made me fall in love with my province again. I'm just thinking about cleaning those dang windows.
As a lover of words, I love the wife's rich vocabulary.

That man likes rocks. The house was stunning. Very enjoyable this video :3
I wanna own enough homes where I refer to the property as “the site”.
I know a couple like that, except that they're landscapers together. Everywhere is a site to plan for their eyes. You have to tell them to stop redesigning your home.
Is cementitious just pretentious cement?
lol of course

sounds like an academic architecture thing
LOL! I thought the same thing
It is a typical term that architects use to categorize materials and common to the building profession.
Amazingly precise. Phenomenal engineering. Oddly enough the hardness and sharp lines of the building actually make the surrounding rocks appear "soft". As he said, they designed it for themselves not for anyone else. Love the whole place.
If my thinking aligns, these people have never thrown stones in their lives.
Guest: i ate som bad shrimps on the way and really need to take a dump.
House owner: oh ,thats ok..just go and stink up our bedroom while we cook lunch below.
There is a public bathroom.
His grandchildren must have such a wonderful time visiting. So amazing.
What a spectacular house! I'd love a house just like it...maybe relocating the toilet though! Kudos to the owners!
Maybe???
Only a pretentious full of themselves kind of person thinks that is a great idea! Such a bright bedroom to.

I don’t mind the open concept of the bathroom/bedroom. Fact is....it’s just them and if they have people over they can just make it an abatement to not go upstairs without announcement.
They hid the oven but not the toilet...
Theres no way I could ever shit there.
Heat-pumps require additional electricity so its always a good idea to combine a heat-pump system with photovoltaic or other renewable energy sources. But I guess there isnt enough sun in the winter and in the summer the trees might be too close. Clever warmth/cooling systemt though.
They used. A sink and toilet from the return isle.
What's wrong with running the heat pumps off the grid?
Beautiful - even taken the quality of the glass into account - Perfect
Absolutely beautiful.. Thank you Kirsten.
Pat has a beautifully-confident voice.
It surely gives a seamless view of the river.. Loved the unobstructed view of the water from any point of the house. Well its their house so im no one to comment but, since its a public forum . i would had wished for.
1. A dive ramp directly from the bedroom.. So you wakeup in the morning and then splash. !!!!
2. The forest side of it is equally beautiful..! Imagine you turn your chair at one side and see the blue water and turn 180 degrees to see the beautiful lush greens with the rocky surrounding.. I mean it could have been a good contrast..! So they missed the other half of it.
3. Its none of my business but.. With the hygiene view point. Toilet is really at the wrong place.
4. Some level of energy saving could have been done by installing solar pannels at the rooftop.
Very nice house. Glad to see that the owner, Larry Williams is obviously very proud of it.
That toilet in the bedroom would definitely kill the mood.
An architectural structure that will make the best of natural beauty and peace. Greetings from Türkiye..
I would love to travel and see all of these amazing homes. I have been following for many many years and I am always amazed. I, also, love how natural the video feels with being able to hear the people so clearly along with their inhales, exhales, when their mouth opens, etc. Also, the shots when it's quiet and you can only hear the birds or nature.
Always so relaxing and motivating.
I think this is the best home that i have seen on this channel that just took my breath away! This space has everything!
No screens in the windows up north is insane. That house is going to be full of mosquitos and blackflies for most of the summer.
So so true.
Maybe they have built over underground caves, with thousands of bats hanging around, & all they have to do is slide a little door that opens up into the caves, & ring a dinner bell & out they fly.
I don't want to be the one nominated to keep the windows crystal clear and clean 😖🤣😂🥴. Grandkids, fingerprints, nose prints . HAHAHA
Yes, I wonder what they are doing against the misquotes, etc....
we didn't build this for people, we built it for ourselves 😅 do u hear that?
Wow! Out of all the dwellings you have showcased over the years, this is one of my favorites! Thanks
When she says at 12:20 “and the bathtub is enormous, just so you know, so lots of people can sit in it” it made me wonder what happened off camera.
Yet if they put it outdoors and called it a hot tub, you wouldn't ask.
Soul cooking 😈👿😱

The lady is actually Pat Hanson the architect.
Nice house. I think the owner was happier to show off her vocabulary more than showing the house.

Welcome to Toronto
Half of what she said did not make sense ... “a platonic pavilion” is just one example
She's an architect, it's not surprising that she would use very specific terms to describe very specific things when that's what her daily life is about. Nothing unexpected here, cut her some slack.

Amazing! Most beautiful house of the series. Very elegant.
The house is beautiful! I would have put the toilet where the walk in closet is or make a closed private space between that and the shower.
Agree. Toilet should have been separate with doors, just like the shower.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. Overall it’s amazing and I love everything about it except for the bathroom/bedroom combo thing that’s going on. Also where does the kids sleep? Shouldn’t there an additional room?
Obviously this was not meant for you. IT IS PERFECT FOR THESE PEOPLE and I would LOVE to have one exactly like theirs. Why pick apart their design? And not every house has to accommodate your brats. The kids in the video seem to like it they adjust to every home their parents showcase. The are many places in the world where multiple generations of a family share only one room.
@@michellej7734 I agree with you. If it works for them. I have that sentiment too.
But when a channel puts out content for the public, they have to expect praise as well as criticism. Everyone see's art and aesthetics differently. Every one does. Beautiful! It just reminds us of oneness. There is no division from inside and outside. Just one with nature.
I agree here; it really stands out when you look at the landscape from the outside, but it looks lovely from the inside. The toilet next to the bed is what I think is the weirdest thing, too. But it is very minimalistic, I like it.
I love how much this guy loves rocks. The amount of knowledge that he loves to share about the formations is endearing. Nice video!
who puts a toilet at the head of the bed?! LOL
It's not, it's on the other side of the tub and facing the wall... The tub itself is very large, so that's a larger distance than it may look, and the actual head of the bed acts as a short wall...
Besides, it's convenient for middle of the night, which happens more frequently as one gets older and he primarily lives in it himself and mainly when vacationing... While you can find similar arrangements in some high end apartments around the world...

Thanks for sharing this and thanks to owners for allowing all its uniqueness to be viewed. As one person said, it appears designed from the inside out. From the outside, it doesn’t fit, but from within, there is so much to appreciate looking out, albeit we all have our opinions as to what we’d do within. @@aaronparys1750 If you're interested in absorbing the landscape you need to use the colors of the landscape. The only time that this home will do that is when the landscape is covered with snow. But then again snow does that to everything. The best design choice would have been to use earth tones.

But most of all, it’s the thread of humanity that weaves the content - grounding subject matter into focus and reality: ever-present nature; the curiosity and joy of a children at play; the excitement of a dreamer - living their dream. Bravo, for pursuing your passion!
