Modern home in Mexican plateau revives ancient water harvest

- In the slope of Tepozteco mountain, Meztitla (Náhuatl for “place near the moon”), Casa Meztitla is in a never ending relationship with nature, harvesting/filtering water the way it was done in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Surrounded by subtropical rainforest that remains untouched, its inhabitants believe that what the land gives should be returned to the property.
In an area with no public water supply and a rainy season that lasts only from July through September/October, the home uses only the water it can capture and reuse from the property. Water flows through an intricate system of filtration. Two main (or three including the pool) water reservoirs exist: the potable water reservoir covered by the grass patio, and the open-air reservoir (using aquatic plants, fish and a pump) for irrigation which resembles “cenotes”, open air water sources sacred to Mayans.
The water system relies on gravity and can store 30,000 liters; it provides enough water for the house all year round. Conceptually, this storm water management captures every drop of rain that touches the property (3800 square meters), uses it in different ways, and does not let a drop out. The result is abundant water and land that is constantly irrigated in a region with seasonal droughts.

Man they have it down pat. No water wasted at all, it can all be used and reused. The rest of the world could take lessons. Especially those western states that are draining their rivers and lakes and doing nothing to renew them.
France2107 wow way to blast the United States of America. As a true American there is only one thing I can say, your right. Not enough people know what it’s like to live without access to water or the importance of saving it. Though we are better than we were 20 years ago.
Someone Just Like You I was really expecting that to go in a different direction lmao
Thats hard to do to provide for the number of people here though. That set up was just them.
@C D Not really. *1)* Harvesting rain water isn't a luxury reserved for _"multimillionaires"_ at all. *2)* Is an inversion for your health, the environment and your budget. *3)* You can build your own setup, your imagination is your limit, not the budget. *4)* _Harvesting the rain water _*_DOES_*_ help to recharge not only the rivers but also the aquifers,_ since all the rain-water that a house (either in rural or urban areas) could catch within his roof is a relatively very small portion and then it would be slowly released within the landscape, that has been proved over and over to benefit the recharge of aquifers, rivers, re-green the desert, it could be used to grow food for a family, etc. *Check Brad Lancaster,* he talks about all that in a masterful and very practical way.
this is a multi million dollar facility fool
We need more videos from Mexico. They are our neighbors and we could learn a lot from them.
Anthony C Brown - With all do respect, there is No need to learn from us; just turn your heads around the Native American People; they also have lots of ancient knowledge about mother nature & balance!!
But I appreciate your comment!
We can both learn from each other (:
Wait for the wall wont be able to see anything from South of border
bobo
welcome to Mexico anytime Mr Brown..
I'm an architect from india and I really appreciate and thank to the owner for water reservation by using excellent method.
thanks to the architect also.
as the guy say in the last we should give back to nature as it has given us😊👍👌💐
I think México and India should collaborate more often and share ideas on sustainable housing - both urban and rural! 👍🏽
@@MiguelJuanez agree for sure
I always find Mexican food lil bit similar to Indian food

@@general_pinochet I prefer Mexican, honestly.
Mexico truly is one of the most beautiful counties in the world, immense natural and cultural diversity!
robert lautner to bad mafias and drug lords own the place
Thanks Robert if you wish you can visit me and stay in my home with your wife or friend. I'm live in State of Mexico, but all my family lives in Yucatan and Quintana Roo. And Tepozteco is very near from my house (two hours). It's safe don't worry.

Wow...what an amazing place! It is so inspiring to see the lengths these people have gone to work WITH Nature and Life; to be in harmony with Nature. Beautiful.
Is the water drink able the water that enters the property and land ?
This is one of the best homes I've seen. Very environmentally functional and beautiful to live in.
This is an ECO-FRIENDLY HOUSE 100% SELF-SUFFICIENT! Excellent architectural design. Love it!
not sure about ECO FRIENDLY §§§§§🙃🙃🙃
Fascinating!!! Somewhere between a science project, modern architecture, and high art. I think I'm in love.
Well said 👌
Kirsten, I have watched alot of your videos. I think this one is one of the most interesting.
Thanks for loving my country. All the world is amazing. God give us incredible things in our world.
I love this! I don't understand any dislikes on this video. What is there to dislike? These folks have created a well thought out, sustainable system.
I love this home, I would live in it the same way let nature run its course.
Holy smoke... this is so astonishing that I can't wrap my head around it!
If just every ten of us were as concerned about the environment as this man, we wouldn't have to face global warming.
Que hermosa casa y sobretodo que chulo es mexico
Muy interesante el vídeo en español, muchas gracias, ojalá haga más vídeos así

Thank you 😊 and love those who love OUR MEXICO ❤️ TOO
Me too im a filipino.
I love how the project respects the nature and makes the inhabitants live with it in peace and harmony, benefitting both. I wish all houses were built that way. What a blessing to live in such a house!
I’m so happy you did a video in Mexico ❤️
.
Amazing. Nice to see a more local / Maya inspired designed house. Very refreshing and beautiful. Thanks!
Much love and appreciation to all for honoring Our Planet!!
Water is Life. It seems they have more work, probably more money invested in the water systems than they do in the structures. Truly self sustained. Really nice.
Primera vez que veo una casa así .
La naturaleza es maravillosa.
Que ideas más excelente
Lo felicito
Morelos in the Eternal Spring land I'm so thankful that I was giving the opportunity to be raised there and wondered in its jungles 😁

Mexico, a natural paradise. where life arises through nature.
That is an amazing house, and a glorious location. How magical.
This is the most amazing video I have ever seen. I could watch this 15 times and still learn something new. What incredible knowledge of the natural world. The way we all should be living.
Wonderful low-tech and yet complex water capture and filtration process. Love the ethos to nature emphasis!
Spectacular sustainable design !!! Love all the nature 🌿🏡💚✌🏻️

Thank you so much for doing this video and showing us! I am very impressed by The Architects and saving their contact info. It's a perfect combination of living with nature, having a modern and off-grid combo, minimalized approach, with the purpose of living sustainable!!!!
I added it to my channel for others to help them on their ideas for alternative living.
Felicidades al señor!! Amamos Mexico!!! Congratulations for this man! We love Mexico!!
How can this have any dislikes its pure genius creativity and conservative 👏👏👏
Some people are just envious, cause they can't have it!
Pure Mexican talent; many countries can learn from their design and ingenuity on passive architecture, Lots of respect for what they accomplished with this house. I hope I can see more of this, thank you for sharing.

True. His voice is so calming. So much green and the house that is beautiful. it's a combo to relax
Was pissed off for some reason.. then this video calms me right down., Beautiful place :) Kudos to the architect and the owners!
Wow! Wow! Wow! That's another place like heaven. 🥰
This is beautiful. At 48,000 gallons, that's massive. A comparison between the earthship water design and this could make a nice hybrid system. They are very close with only a few differences. There was no mention of grey water toilets and the saltwater pool output will require a different set of plants down the watershed in a permaculture design.
He did mentioned the system for gray water, the translation wasn't there.
Basically he runs the gray water into the yard/lawn, he mentioned that's how he keeps it green.
But 48,000gals iiis a lot...man
If I lived there the silence would be broken by beautiful opera arias played through a high-end audio system

The most innovative and respect for mother Earth that I have ever seen. Water is everything, and without it we have nothing. Bravo❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️
This is how we all should live! What a great way to use our natural resources and incorporate it into our lifestyle.
I wish I had money to build a place like this in the country side with reusable water and solar panels. Great video. Love it!
One can always make this home in a much smaller scale according to our pocket $$. It's actually inexpensive to build homes in MX!
What a brilliant design!
So glad to see the real Mexico, brilliant minded, clean, resourceful! Different than what people think about us.
Excelente trabajo, una casa así sin ruido de autos 🚙

Wow this is the first time I've been in a comment section where I see so many people saying nice things about my country for once. That you guys, even though a lot of Americans hate Mexico and Mexicans us Mexicans have always loved American culture and people and we take inspiration from U.S for a lot of things. I love your country. But I think Airbnbs -- everywhere in the world -- are a cancer.

Great video, I am working on such a project and I found all the information I needed. God bless to everyone who thinks in such a way. With nature it has to be give and take. Whatever we take from nature, we should return it as it is.

I was lucky to stayed at this house and it’s amazing. That guy shows you everything on you visit an her wife is really kind. If you can come and visit this house. You can find ir on Airbnb. 👌🏻🇲🇽
Of course. All of these places are Airbnb's. It's revolting. This is a 30-minute commercial for this guy' property.
Muy bonito lugar. Saludos cordiales desde Tijuana México
Amazing good job 👍👍👍👏👏👏🇲🇽
Que Bella la casa y to-do lo que an hecho, me encanta,. Bendiciones.
Wonderful video, so many people do not know, or do not care about saving water.
We do everything we can i.e. never brush our teeth in running water. Use the bidet for an all over wash. e.t.c. collect all rainwater and so on.
I so hope this video could be seen by everybody that needs to see it ! CONGRATULATIONS :)

Very cool features. Not ‚comfy‘ enough, for my taste, but very smartly designed. And maybe, when you live in the jungle, you want a very clean, minimalist house as a contrast....
Yes, the contrast is amazing.
Jungle...
I would design lots of houseplants and easy-care Orchids to bring the outside in. A few Mexican works of art, both 2D and 3D and it could be very comfortable.
Looks uncomfortable as hell
But I love the idea
@@rhipotter6191 Why so?
So many of the places on this channel are just Airbnbs. I have a real issue with that. Airbnbs are causing the cost of housing to rise all over the world, and it is causing problems for low income residents. I am interested in these houses because I want to LIVE in one. I don't want to use it to profit from and disrupt the economy for my neighbors.
As someone who had an experience working in a distilled water manufacturing company and water utility company, I am very impressed with their own filtration system.
I have watched this show several times and I am still fascinated!
The best part is they cut the wall, not the branch 17:15
What a forward thinking individual (owner). Says a lot about them.
I would leave my hurried life here in the states to retire there in a minute.
Agreed!!!
Shows all the ways you CAN have a great home with efficiency without spending money on all the 'latest' finery. I love the basic kitchen - reminds me of things we did many years ago in our first home in the 1960's - you don't need fancy at all ! Recycled wood is neat ! The gardening & land care is amazing, and it's really nice to see they are incorporating old concepts into their newer modern life. Let nothing go to waste, let nature do its' thing, enjoy the best of it all. Best wishes to sensible, caring people ! I thought I was watching the Basque country until I suddenly realized this is in Mexico !
Que hermosa coexistencia y tengo la fortuna de vivir en las faldas del Valle de Tepoztlan
now that is Fluoride Free water!!!!!
Very close to my perfect home. I would like some subterranean rooms and that furniture ain't my style. But love the rest.
Pretty sure they've got some whopping huge snakes there. I'd be afraid to leave all those doors open. The snakes come in then they hide. Especially with all those rocks and the water all around.
How smart people do things.
I am actually feeling homesick for a place I have never been.
Amazing. All of it. Thanks, Kirsten.
Preciosa casa, hermoso pensamiento de los dueños, pero estoy totalmente encontrá en las construcciones en bosques y selvas por más amigables que se han estás.
Both beautiful and scary where the deep hole and waterfall are
Do you have any mold issues in the casa?
In Mexico concrete (concrete blocks ) is used heavily, I'm not sure, but I think it rids you of that issue.
This fellow is a genius .. I've never seen anything like it or someone as passionate about Nature in the modern world as he is. Thank you so much for posting
