      Robin, great video. I use the layrite clay from time to time, I rate it but it isn't perfect, for all the reasons you list. Of those products you have used, which product (clay or otherwise) would you say has the greatest hold on its own, without hairspray?

      Got pretty fine hair and cement is just to thick and sticky for my hair it tends to rip out so many strands.

    Thanks for the review I needed someone to confirm what I thought myself about the Layright's hold. Halfway through the day it always seemed to fall apart and would be hard to put back together and it definitely made my hair feel heavy which was bad for me as I have finer hair. Overall great job, I really like your reviews :)

    Some advice on using Layrite Cement Clay: wet your hands a little before using it. The product is water soluble, so it will thin and disperse the clay without having to work it in your hands forever. And it eases the application by allowing you to work it into your hair without feeling like you're pulling your hair out. I hope this helps someone else.

    Layrite is the bomb!! In my arsenal..end result-wise once settled in hair (combability), on par with Krewcomb Masterwax < GBS Hair Control Wax. Heads up if you thought Layrite to be heavy, try the GBS. Can’t believe there aren’t any reviews for it on here! • @ManForHimself
      @ManForHimself  6 років тому +8

      But if I started doing that there would be no purpose in having a points system.

    • @funnyman808x
      @funnyman808x 6 років тому

      @@ManForHimself it could be part of the point system . Or you could give both products a score or amount of points and if its severely disappointing like the hold give them a 0 or negative points.

    • @faded2145
      @faded2145 6 років тому +1

      Robin James I think there’s still a point in the points system. People clicking on these videos just want to know which one is better. If you think one is better, it should have more points. If something seriously underperforms, it makes sense to remove points

    • @force9485
      @force9485 5 років тому

      Agreed.more points for the product that performs better (3 points) vs. less points (1 point) for packaging which is just window dressing for example. A point system is fine, just tweak it.

    Thanks for this Robin. I was going to buy layrite, due to its hold factor but judging my reviews and now yours I'm not going to. I've heard its quite a greasy product and I think you experienced this when you mentioned it was fairly heavy after frequent use.
    at the moment I've been used quicksand with claymation.
    I did have baxter of California clay pomade but I've stopped using it I find its actually quite greasy as well, what are your thoughts?
    any recommendations on very high hold but matte styling product?

    Hi Robin,
    Good video, thank you - it was of particular interest to me as I own both of these clays.
    I was wondering can you share any experience you may have with our home Great British brand Lock Stock & Barrel? They do a clay called 85 Karats, for example.
    I also would be interested, given your love for Aveda's tonic, to know if you've tried Aveda's hair clay. I have this Aveda clay and it is quite unlike most other products. You may be interested to try it out and I'd certainly be keen to hear how these fare in your far-reaching gauge of experience with innumerable hair products!
    Cheers!

    I used to be a big fan of the Layrite Cement when my hair was shorter, but now that it has gotten a bit longer (4" or so), I really have come to dislike the layrite. The product is very hard to apply and ends up being way too heavy for my thick hair - makes my hair look gross and weighed down. Application is also really not good, I find there is way too much tug and resistance which makes it difficult to evenly distribute throughout. I have come to much prefer the layrite Natural Matte Cream as both a pre- and post-styler as my hair has gotten longer.

    I understand where you're coming from on this Robin but I personally like the Layrite much more than you did. I wear a low fade with my hair on top about 1.5 inches and the Layrite is perfect for it. Unfortunately the Lockharts is a bit greasier and the wind at work seems to stand the hair up and leave it up, not a good look for me. But honestly, these are two of my top products, the other ones being my Gatsby Extra Hold Wax and 18.21 Clay. The Lockharts can become perfect for me if I use some dry shampoo to take away some of the greasiness of the wax. All about working with what we have, yeah?
    Thanks for the review!

    As much as smell and feel and all that is important, at the end of the day how the product works is what's important to me. If the one that won out of these two is the more disappointing of the two, im not sure how it won. I do appreciate the in depth review of both of them, but if the one that is disappointing one, and the one that you would trust more lost, that seems like the weighting is off. I do love this series though, and that may be just because of what I'm looking for in a product. I appreciate the review and comparison between products!

      Robin James well I figured that since it’s probably one of the heaviest products I’ve personally used it would make super weigh down fine hair and not give much hold compared to thick hair that could work with it more. I could be completely wrong but that’s just my 2 cents

    Have you tried Fuertes Clay? I got it and it reminds me a lot to Patrick M3. A Brand Battle between these 2 would be a Good one. Excellent video as always Robin, your hair is looking good

    I've found that the Layrite cement only loses its hold in very humid environments. Day by the beach? It's done. Inside my office during the week? All day hold.

    Hello Robin! How are you? I hope you’re well. I’m currently looking for hair products and was wondering if you could help. I currently have Claymation and Quicksand. I find they don’t work well as an everyday product due to the clay and product buildup and it’s hard to wash out. I’m wondering if you know of any products that have a smooth consistency, that get into the hair easily but won’t stiffen too much after styling and also that would wash out easily. I have thick and wavy hair if that changes anything and it’s about medium length. As always this was a great video and I look forward to more content. Thanks Robin and have a good day. :) (by the way loving that blazer)

      Hey Justin. I'm great thanks. Hope you are too?
      Best thing would be is to search 'clay' on my channel and check out some of those. Easier for you to see how they work.

      I am great thank you! From what I have seen based on your videos, the best thing for me to do is purchase a water based clay (not like the hanz de fuko products I have now) Some of your clay videos are quite a bit older so I was wondering if you had any water based clays that you recommend now in 2018 that perhaps you haven't made a video about or that you've come to love in the last little while. Cheers!

    I’ve been using Layrite Cement for years because I have very thick, hard to style hair. It works okay on shorter hair, but it really doesn’t hold well. Also, as soon as I start running or something, the Layrite breaks down and my hair collapses. Anyone recommend any products that hold up to sweat well and work in longer, thick hair? I’d like a matte finish, I find Layrite is too shiny.

    Wish I watched this review before I dropped $30 CAD on the layrite clay. I had the same experience, super responsive and styles great at first. But a couple hours later and the hold just fails so hard.

    Do the Layrite matte cream. That’s the one most barbers use cause it isn’t as heavy as the clay. I have thick hair and it works perfectly.

      Bad advice. Totally different applications. The clay is for a firm, plyable hold. The creame is for a light, loose hold.

    I love these "Brand Battle" videos. For me, Matte Clay, by Lockhart's is the best matte clay so far. I've tried at least 20 clays in the market, and no one does the job so well.
