  • Instructor : Steve Schlautman
    Assisted by : Katie Wright
    Location : Dayton, Ohio !!!
    Music selections:
    -- Steps 1-5 : Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting (1974) (100 BPM)
    -- Steps 6-11 : Olly Murs - Troublemaker (2012) (106 BPM)
Note about my music selections : Full tempo Hustle is in the 120 BPM range so understand that the songs I've selected for this video are purposefully much slower in tempo to make it easier to learn for those who are new to dance or who have health issues which affect their dancing.
Purpose : This video is designed to introduce SYNCOPATED Hustle to new dancers. Many I know still do the 4-count Hustle. That's not a bad thing. You can simply consider syncopated Hustle to be a more advanced, more aerobic, more athletic, etc. style of Hustle. If you have health challenges like recent knee or hip replacements, heart issues, don't feel bad if you can't do the syncopated rhythm. If you dance syncopated hustle to full tempo music (i.e. in the 118-120 range) your heart rate will become considerably more elevated versus the 4-count Hustle!
Dance style : This is social, not competitive, Hustle. My goal here is to teach a fun, social style of Hustle. I'm not out to win any awards here. (You'll notice I even forgot to put my dance shoes on for this video! Ha ha!!)
Steps taught in this video :
    1a) Non-turning Basic
    1b) Turning Basic
    2) Windmill
    3) Ladies Inside Turn
    4) Belt Buckle
    5) Cuddle
    6) Side Break to Throw Out
    7) Left Turn
    8) Wrap Turns (He Goes, She Goes)
    9) One-Armed Bandit
    10) Men's Press Line (more Intermediate, not Beginner)
    11) Double Outside Turn to Hip Catch (Silver, definitely not Beginner)
Note about the instructor (Steve) : I've been dancing since 1993 and teaching ballroom full-time since 2002. I teach private dance lessons at my studio in Kettering, Ohio. If you're interested in dance lessons, please contact me. I'm always taking on new students. FYI, I teach all Am. Rhythm, Am. Smooth, and Int. Standard dances, plus social dances like Hustle, CW 2Step, Night Club 2Step, Salsa, Bachata, Polka, and Jitterbug!
Steve's one sentence philosophy of dancing : If the lady you are dancing with is smiling, you're doing something right.
Thank you for watching my video! And have fun dancing!!!!!

As an intermediate to advanced hustle dancer, this is an excellent video for beginners. I agree with him to forget about the 4 count hustle (it's baby stuff); the syncopated step is what most hustle dancers use.

I'm so glad to see this video. I'm taking lessons and all they talk about is 4 step hustle. And I get so mixed up. I want to learn syncopated which is what I learned years ago and I thought that iswhat hustle actually is. THANK YOU!! I thought I was going crazy..

My husband and I have been using your videos for about two years to improve our dancing. Today we used the dance moves from this video to record a clip for the channel You, Me & The RV. They asked for a short clip of people dancing to make a compilation for their 100K Sub video. Glad we found your channel. Also enjoyed the video you posted on Nov. 21 Will continue to support your channel. We have a small rv travel channel.

I'm old and I remember the Hustle and the song "Kung Fu Fighting"...When we danced to "Kung Fu Fighting", Hustle dancing was really not in yet. We did the "Bump" and the "Kung Fu Bump" to that first song.

      Kung Fu Bump?

    • @mrob75
      @mrob75 5 років тому

@@Robert_Keel LOL it was a variation of the original Bump, but when we danced the Kung Fu Bump, we would make "martial arts" moves with our arms and bodies as we "bumped". If you listen to Joe Simon's 1975 "Get Down (Get On the Floor)" which was the ultimate Kung Fu Bump song, you'll hear Joe mention the "Kung Fu Bump". :---)

The way the video uses "quick quick slow slow" is confusing because the second quick used is actually a slow. And the first quick is not a half note but a quarter note. The video upload rhythm, on its face, is more a foxtrot, country 2 step, or single swing rather than Hustle. I count my Hustle as "uh 1, 2, 3" "uh" being a quarter note similar to samba syncopation.
