I always say that, we used to appreciate the little things in life more. I know we were young and more care free, but people in general were more caring. Families were much more united. Technology seperated us. When we had one black and white tv , everyone watched together. Now everyone is on his mobile, tablet or computer. We live in invisible bubbles were we see each other but no really communicating. Life was more affordable, my dad provided for 7 children and wife. Mum took care of all our needs and although she was very busy she found time to play with us or a walk in the countryside during the week. But now to buy a house both parents have to work until they are pensioners. Young couples cannot afford to help their aging parents, and after a lifetime of giving most elders end up with strangers in a residence for the old. Van McCoy was a DC native and I was hired to spend the day photographing Van as he was honored by the city on “Van McCoy Day”. We went to record shops, clubs and the Mayor’s office where he presented Mayor Washington with a Platinum Record. Van was presented the Keys To The City by Mayor Walter E. Washington. Van and I became friends because he liked my work and the way I stayed out of the way while I was doing it. He hired me to do many assignments that year including concerts featuring Melba Moore, his concerts and even private family gathering in his DC home whenever he came to town. On New Year’s Eve 1977, my wife and I drove up to Englewood NJ to meet with Van so I could go into NYC to the Power Station Recording Studio as he put the finishing touches on his new album. Then we prepared to spend the weekend shooting his new album cover for MCA Records, his new record label. After the ball dropped on the New Year, we left the studio, drove to Englewood and dropped by the “Wicket Wilson Pickett’s” house in Englewood, NJ to continue to bring in the New Year. I couldn’t believe my wife and I were actually going to meet Wilson Pickett. We played pool, Van played Wilson Pickett’s piano and we had a ball just hanging out. For a guy just beginning to make a name for myself in the entrainment industry with my cameras, this was like a dream to me and my wife who had celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary that April. Afterwards, we went on to Van’s and finish the album cover shoot for the “My Favorite Fantasy” album. What Van did for me and my career and family continued to be a fairytale but you’ll have to wait to read that part of my story next month in my upcoming Apple Book photo documentary “Unexpected Access” which I take you on a photographic journey behind the scenes and on stage as I covered some of the most iconic artists of the 70’s. At 72, I still pinch myself. Thank you Van McCoy!
Van McCoy won a Grammy for this classic. Van also wrote the song, I Get the Sweetest Feeling, which became a hit for Jacky Wilson, and numerous other songs for the likes of Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight & the Pips. A very creative and talented man who sadly died from a heart attack at the young age of 39. I bet Mr. McCoy would be pleased to know that this great song is still being played around the world.
Complainers say that disco music was too repetitive, and too long, but they forget that this was dance music; and the fact is, with the great records, people on the dance floor are often wishing it would never end.

In 1975 my life was great. I had a good job for a big corporation in which I was a rising star. I still had my TR6 Triumph to tool around in . After work me and some co workers would hit the clubs in Manhattan . One evening we arrived at this club uptown that was jumping and people were all dancing. My sister Eileen had taught me to dance as a kid. I was a fairly good dancer in 75 and started dancing to this song with a lovely blond woman (name long forgotten) and later her lady friends joined my group at our table. Man, this generation today has noooo clue of how to truly live! I am with all of you. I was born in 1968. My childhood was the best ever. This music can't be matched.

The greatest decade of music EVER! I was 18 in 1970 and caught the entire disco scene. And so so many hits came out the year I got married, 1977. Real music, no autotune, no gymnastics, no processing....just great music!!
I was 11 that year. I love the '70s music. I recently set up a 1979 playlist, and it's great music --- GREAT music --- but you can sense that it's changing that year, suggesting things would be different in the '80s.
and the Drugs were REAL Good !
I grew up in the eighties being told that disco sucks, now I've fortunately gotten rid of a lot of my prejudices (not all, country sucks:) but I really like a lot of disco music.
