This is by far my favorite Marathon of all time. Gharib of Morocco was expected to win but during the last few months or weeks before the Olympics, a new star from Kenya threatened to take it and he did. Rest in peace Wanjiru. Merga blew my mind with his supreme ability to hold on and very strong after hitting the wall at 1:52. Wanjiru then deepened Merga's pain and took off. Gharib as usual kept just watching and taking one at a time, but this time he couldn't take Wanjiru as the 18 year old was too fresh and young and lack of experience worked for his favor as he didn't have any fear cuz it is very hard to beat Gharib at his own game. Great marathon in its entire.
Sammy was born on November 11, 1986, so he would have been 21 y.o. in Beijing, not 18 y.o, That still makes him the you marathon gold medallist ever. He left us far too early, but he also left us a wonderful example of how to run with a balanced posture. He really was biomechanically perfect. That may explain why he's still the world junior record-holder in the 10,000 on the track.
@@randyevermore9323 Thx for the correction. I had no doubt that Wanjiru could have broken the Marathon WR, but he left us too soon. Kenya now has lost 3k steeplechase WR after they regained it back quickly from the Moroccan Boulami. Ethiopia has it now but I hope the other Moroccan El Bakali breaks it this year it next year as he just ran 7:56. He has gone under 8 twice now. God bless Kenya, Ethiopia and Morocco, the long distance kings, let's keep all the WR's within these 3 nations. It has never gotten out of these 3 in decades. Let's run faster and faster. Peace and love my brothers.
A brilliant run by Mr Wanjiru. He beat a stellar field featuring a 2 time world marathon champion among others. Olympic marathon record in those conditions, magnificent. RIP Sammy Wanjiru. Thank you for posting this epic race & all the best.

Viktor 🇨🇭 What a rolemodel!
R. I. P Sam
In my books, Wanjiru is the greatest marathoner of all time. Before the advent of clown shoes.
Patricio valladares y roberto echeverria compitieron en esta maraton igual..
who have the full race ?
Wanjiru rip icone kenya
Very good
one of the great races in history. Too bad a horrible conspiracy takes out a sportsman like Wanjiru who was on the road to become a true GOAT
Nice

el etiope que termina 4 lugar perdió porque no tomaba agua, se la echaba en los pies.
