Thanks for having come Japan, Sammy. Many Japanese have learned the importance of being patient and sincere from you. I've never forgotten your brave figure and great spirits. R.I.P.
I met you in 1998, you were one of my best athlete, and you became the world greatest, sadly you were taken from us. I honestly miss you everyday, R.I.P Samuel.
" My hearts still ache in sadness, And secret tears still flow, What it meant to lose you, No one will ever know." "No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye , You were gone before we knew it And only God knows why." R.I.P Samuel Kamau Wanjiru.
Imagine the rivalry that could have been against Kipchoge given the fact that he was exactly two years younger than Eliud Kipchoge and became the Olympic Champion at 21 breaking an Olympic record under hot and humid conditions!
Yes. You're correct. Sammy had decided the marathon was too easy for him so he opted to add a bunch of unnecessary muscle mass so he could run slower and give the other guys a chance.
Death Robbed us Pure Talent. I loved his strength, endurance and comeback mentality. RIP Forever Grateful and Proud of the Kenyan Athletes. Proudly 🇰🇪 🇰🇪🇰🇪
It's very unfortunate we've just lost another brilliant and talented athlete RIP Kelvin Kiptum the current world marathon record holder 2:00:36.🙆 at only 24 years old
@@noahsegonds4728 He broke the Olympic record under hot and humid conditions by running away from the field early and yet he was only 21, and exactly two years younger than Eliud Kipchoge!
What a magnificent performance by Sammy Wanjiru! The Olympic Games marathon champion and the Olympic games marathon Bronze medallist scorching the Chicago streets for $500,000 plus. RIP Sammy Wanjiru.
Olympic record and world record holders both dead at 24, running their last marathon on this same course - so few start out at that age, they'd have probably eclipsed Kipchoge's legacy and gone down as the 3 best of all time - a potential golden era and instead we only saw one of them fulfil his potential
This is the best marathoner that ever lived but alcohol&family issues led him to his death, if wanjiru was still alive we wouldn't be talking about eliud kipchoge, this guy had won everything at 23, wanjiru would have become a status symbol, a hero, this one would have gotten a statue, the best that never was
Samuel Wanjiru, rest in peace legend. I don't feel like watching this years Olympic marathon. No matter who's going to win it, Sammy would've beaten him.
To me this is more impressive than the world record in the 100 meters. How is it humanly possible for a man to run that far and then sprint like that at the end? Although, the prospect of winning $500,000 would definitely give him the incentive to run faster. Being from a country where the average monthly wage is less than $100, he could live like a king.
This must be one of the most exciting marathon ever. He was the G.O.A.T. before Eliud Kipchoge. Kelvin Kiptum broke the world record in Chicago last October. Chicago was the last marathon race for both Kamau and Kiptum. They both died at 24 and they both revolutionized marathon running.
It's refreshing to see such an established distance runner with a low arm swing. It reminds me of the technique used be Rob de Castella back in the 80's. These days (especially) most have a high arm swing. Personally I use a low arm swing as I feel it conserves energy and helps me to maintain a high cadence.
Death respects no one. So sad to see such talent and magnificence go to waste. Greatly missed, I thought of him during the London Marathon gone, greatly missed. I hope he's at peace. Sleep well champ.
Arguably, Sammy Wanjiru's death at the time it was, was the single greatest blow to marathon, and long distance running, that has ever been. Had he still been alive, kicked alcohol and stayed injury free: there is a strong chance from what I have read and seen that it would have been Wanjiru, and not Eliud Kipchoge, that would have set the current world records and broken 1:59 first. To the memory of the troubled, yet incredible, Wanjiru. You will not be forgotten.
We'll never know the records that would've got broken if didn't pass away so prematurely. This is the guy that would've given Kipchoge a run for his money (pun intended).
Cómo deportistas, siempre entendemos que los vicios o malas conductas no van de la mano con esta disciplina del atletismo..lastima de Samuel, llegó a tocar las cimas más altas, se dejó llevar por los excesos
Arguably my best marathoner at the time. I unfortunately wasn't aware of his indiscipline off the track. By indiscipline l mean drinking, not women, as in Kenya polygamy is accepted by law.
It's indiscipline for a runner to drink heavily it just doesn't go together! However l could put it in a different way.. most likely he had made the money and wasn't interested to compete anymore. With drinking he wouldn't have made it against other athletes it can't work. Likely the woman took advantage when he was drunk to plan his death.
If only this guy was alive,we would be having two GOATS in the marathon...May he rest in peace...
Make that 3, instead we now have 0 😢
🎉 back here today 2024 in memory of this champion and now my other friend Kiptum. Champions do rest too!

RIP Sammy
Yep he had a lot of talent.
I am here to see Wanjiru run, now that we lost another one Kiptum 😢. Rest in Peace

a hero you were. Your name will remain in the world marathon books for even generations to come. RIP brother sam
awesome finish to the race. Wanjiro was amazing. I get chills watching this. The announcers we so into the moment. Very memorable, thanks for posting.
after run more than 36km, He still had ton of energy to do sprint in the final 400meters. What a lung!!!
I'll always remember when he crossed the line at Beijing 2008. I cried!! Our hero. RIP man. 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪
He was just 23!
Am sure he could be a beast by now!!!
RIP Sammy
Tears welling up for this young Champion, I guess more money comes with more problems if one is not disciplined and sober. God First .
liked the boxing references .. it really felt like a heavyweight battle between these two runners! RIP Wanjiru
I can't help shedding tears every time I watch Sammy doing his thing. He was a beautiful athlete. What a waste.
Among some of Toni Reavis' commentary gems: "What balls this guy's got!" Indeed, Sammy had. Huge ones. What a loss.
It's very unfortunate we've just lost another brilliant and talented athlete RIP Kelvin Kiptum the current world marathon record holder 2:00:36.🙆 at only 24 years old
Back here again in 2023... I guess that was Sammy's " I have to win this, if I die, I die" moment. Sad we lost him... you forever with us bro.
At 23, wonder what a race between him.and Eliud would have looked like
Ben Mahinda Oh I would have done anything to see a race like that...

He came to Churchill show just before this race and Churchill told him to do the signaling before he crosses the finish line...R.i.p.
Have seen this after 1:59 challenge and has recalled to memory the fallen hero of own land. Continue RIP Sammy
Did any-one noticed the other guy was blocking Samuel Wanjiru from taking the lead.He did it several times but Wanjiru was tough & determined to win.

What a rare talent that the world and Kenya has been robbed of. Bad things happen to those who have achieved much in life.
