I have an 83 k10 with the 305 granny low 4 speed. I actually learned to drive and took my test in a 76 c20. I love that transmission! But after not owning one of these for 30 some years I got the 83 2 years ago and had a hard time getting used to the wide gear spacing. But it al came back to me and I love these trucks. Grew up in them, my dad owned 4 of these bought new in the 60s and 70s. My truck has a 305 and I really want to get a crate 350.
Neat learning about these manual transmissions. I learned on a Mack that they call transmissions similar to the one on this truck a "Compound" transmission. Sometimes on the big trucks, they call the granny gear the "deep under" gear. Like on this one, four possible speeds, but with a deep under in 1st, you really have 3 of them that are truly usable on the highway. I do noticed that sometimes that deep under gear can get to be pretty noisy compared to the direct gears.
i have and 1988 that was an automatic i converter to a manual and its was my grandfather truck he give me for my 13 brith gift its was scary at 13 but i manage scary but fun its was cool working on it it took me about my whole summer to turn it from and automatic to a manual truck manual i say it good on gas
I have a 1986 gmc k3500 4x4 cab and chassis 2 door with a 6.2l diesel and i love the sm465 in it. Just adds to the cool factor. Got it for $2300 and found out that it's worth 10,000 usd
I just bought a 83 gmc today. Drove it home 30 miles in traffic on the highway across the skyway bridge with no 2nd gear and a really bad rough country lift also old dry knobby tires. Looking forward to rebuilding the 465.
I’m kinda there now too. 85 c20, auto. But it just sucks in any kind of wet grass. So unless it’s summer I think it’s useless on my new property. My barn in down a hill and now I can’t really drive stuff to the barn unless I want to get stuck for an hour or more.
I have a 84 K10 that has a wore out 350 and burnt up 700R4. Doing a 454 and SM465 swap next spring. Can't wait to see what it will do. 4x4 is nice and is what I prefer in my trucks.
@@mercedes-amgforlife3237 I put up a new video. Got the 85 C2500 stuck for the last time. It’s going to be for sale soon. I really really like these squares but wife said I needed a back seat for dogs etc. So unless I find a 4x4 crew cab square that I really like for an ok price I’m not going to have one for a while..
Beautiful truck I got a 82 Chevrolet custom deluxe with a 6 inch skyjacker lift on 35s I'm actually in the process of dropping a new 350 sbc but my first car was a Ford explorer and sold it to buy my dream truck a squarebody Chevy!!!😎
That sounds awesome. You should film it! OD Would make a lot more sense. I don’t know anything about gear ratios or transmissions though. I never really got into that.
Hey, I have a 59 Chevy Apache and I’m going to put this transmission in it. I’m only 14 so I can’t drive it legally yet. What gear do you start out in? Do you start in 2nd because 1st is so low?
That’s a cool truck! You’re very lucky to have that. It really depends on the hill, or if you’re carrying a heavy load. Usually you can easily use 2nd gear as first gear
I’m thinking about putting a SM465 in my suburban. I put a lot of miles on it and most highway. It’s got 33in tires. I’m looking to install a 14b with a 4.10 gear ratio. I think my suburban has 3.54 from the factory. I’m not really worried about gas mileage long as it’s around 10mpg. It’s lucky to hit 10 these days. My biggest reason for want to change is reliability and that super low gear for off rd. I’m building it into a overlander. I’d love to do a NV4500 or the tr4050 but it’s outta my price range. So it’s either a 4L80 or sm465. I’m afraid the 4l80 wouldn’t last as long and be as reliable as a manual so that’s my reasoning. What y’all think?
I wish I knew pal. I was only using this truck for house reno’s or dump runs/whatever else. Did the repairs for fun. I forget now how long I even had it for. I don’t remember what my fuel mileage was but i’m also in my 30’s going on age 90 so I like the automatic transmission better myself and I don’t care to 4x4 stuff because it wrecks it. Good luck with your project :)
@@Darren1767 I like my subwoofers, bass, and word play so I'm usually listening the rap or similar. There's some really good rebassed country out there too, and I'll generally listen to whatever's on if it's on. I've started saving up and want to swap this trans into my old 98 silverado along with doing a lot of other things. That's why I've been curious to watch some of these videos
Does anyone prefer this SM465 over the automatic or is it just for the masochists? I understand this manual was used in 20,000 lbs trucks so it’s an extremely durable heavy duty transmission but I would also imagine that it’s a slow shifting gearbox with a lot of heavy parts carrying a lot of inertia Would love to hear some feedback
I think it’s a cult thing. Like you said. I prefer the auto-magical-transmission. I like the quicker shifting 5 speeds. I found this one to have way too wide of gearing so it wasn’t even fun throwing the shifter around because you were never shifting gears and I couldn’t always gear down when I wanted to.
Just out for a rip are ya bud? F*ckin' buddy comes over to my place the other night And he's like "wanna go out for a rip?" And I was like "f*ckin' right!" So we hop in the truck and hit the mud and I was like "Oooohh f*ck yeah bud!" Just out for a rip are ya bud? Just out for a rip? 😁

Same Interior As Mine And I have An 82 Went From 305 To 350 With has 308 gears
Its a 4 speed. I have a 90s model and the low gear is 1st gear
Granny gear, then 1-2-3-R ?
Yessir!
and a straight 6
It doesn’t have a slave cylinder correct? From what I heard that was added in 85. Gosh I miss my sm465.
You’re right! All mechanical
Sounds beautiful
Learned on a 70 same trans
Nice truck

Question does all silverado blazer parts fit sierra ?
That would be a great question for a parts professional. Sorry I don’t have any experience with blazers or jimmy’s.
I have a 83 k10 3 speed it sucks on the highway anything above 55 it’s just non stop high rpm
Oooh right on! I’ve since long sold this truck but it was cool

Probably, half ton. Wouldn’t think it would have super low gears unless it was 3/4 or 1 ton
