    I am 12 years old and just bought a 1990 k5 blazer 350 factory 4 speed. I’m so excited to do a build and fix her up. Got a great deal on it for how rare it is. Never been so happy in my life.

    Back in the day i bought a new 1980 K5 Blazer with a 4 speed manual 350 4 barrel engine . Put a 2 inch lift and bigger tires on it great bush truck for hunting & fishing , only used 1st gear granny low when offroad . Driving in the city just used it like 3 speed no problems . Loved that truck , it would go anywhere in granny low 1st gear & transfer case set in low gear 4 wheel drive

      Sounds like a pretty sweet setup. Definitely feels unstoppable in 4 low, even with open diffs.

      Yah i also ripped off the stock single muffler and installed a true dual exhaust with Walker mufflers and my mechanic installed a low end cam for more power in the low rpm's . Paid 10 grand 🇨🇦 for it brand new

      Gone are the days that you can get a new vehicle at a reasonable price... That's why I try my best keeping these old cars and trucks going. Last month I tore into this truck. Right now i have the body off the frame to do some rot repair, de-scaling the frame and floor to undercoat, new fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, and body mounts. I miss driving it, but when it's back this spring it'll be better than ever.

      They're great trucks! You need to understand that they're tractors though. Most of this trucks miles are highway miles, and it does ok. I've even maintained 80 mph for long periods of time, but usually stick to 65-70. I'm sure a k5 with an automatic overdrive, or a 5 speed overdrive swap would be amazing on the highway. I have 3.42 gears with a 4 speed non-overdrive transmission. Overall, I have no complaints, but I also understand that it's an old truck, so I keep to the right. Hope this helps!

      I think in these later years, you could only get the 700R4 4 speed Automatic with overdrive, or this sm465 4 speed manual non-overdrive. But many refer to the sm465 manual as a 3 speed because it's labeled L (Low) 1 2 3, 3 being the top gear. I'm not sure if there's a top speed difference. With the Automatic, you had more gear options for the rear axle, so that with overdrive definitely plays a role

    Too bad the SM465s don't whine like the SM420s and their SM3xx cousins did... always liked the sound of them-

      Ahh yes! Never driven one of the other SM's but this trans has a little bit of whine. I love it... also have a bw t-4 in a v8 s10 blazer that whines about as much as this truck

    Do you have hilo gear to go 4x4?

    • @TheStone600
      @TheStone600  5 років тому

      The transfer case has a low range for 4x4. I'm not sure what the reduction is but it's an NP241 that came stock in this truck, if you want you could look up the gear ratio.

    Where. Can. I. Find. A. 1987. K5. Blazer

      I'd check local classifieds... if you only want an 87, you'd narrow your results a lot. But 87-91 are pretty similar if you're open to other years.

      Not sure where you're located but I just found an 87 k5 blazer with a 4 speed in south Jersey on Craigslist.

      Theres nothing wrong with using the granny low. A 91 blazer weighs a fucking ton

      @@uglymechanics6599 About 4500lbs. Compared to my truck which is ~7000lbs but I don't need to use low hardly ever with no load. Makes sense.

      I rarely use Low when I'm not pulling my boat. But when I do, it's usually in the driveway or tight parking lots. Using Low hasn't and won't hurt anything. This truck has it's original clutch and drivetrain, and everything functions as it should.
