  • North facing rooms are notoriously tricky to pick colors for. You not only don't get much direct sunlight, the light you do end up getting happens to be on the cooler side. What is a designer to do? When they go cool, you go warm! Here are some paint colors for north facing rooms that I like!

I have a north facing room that doubles as a guest bedroom and craft space. I painted the room Gypsy Pink in matte finish with White Dove trim in semigloss. The room is gorgeous especially when the red bud tree outside the windows is in bloom.

Shaker beige was AWFUL in my large north facing living room with long windows. It was so yellow it looked like MUSTARD! I had to repaint part of the room. My personal decorator screwed that up. Now it’s beautiful Edgecomb Gray. It’s a beautiful like beige.

Really great colours, All! Loving the mauve too - just about to do some velvet curtains in this colour for my southern hemisphere south room. Glad you agree. Those off-whites are divine. And the beige. And the green.

May I recommend Benjamin Moore Cotton Balls (OC-122). The main windows of my house are north facing and the south side of my house has a big covered porch, so basically my whole house has northern exposure lighting. I was afraid of using this color at first because the LRV of 90.67 is very high. I was worried it would be too bright. But the result is a very pleasant warm fresh white. I am so happy with this color!

I have a northern facing living room that I am in the process of picking a paint color for now. When you said the lighter colors disappear, you are not kidding. I’m sticking with an L RV of between 55 and 65. I noticed the LRVs in the 70s and higher are like why bother even painting. I’m going with Rose Dust (55.8 LRV) in a matte finish for my walls.

What a phenomenal master class in color and light. I have been struggling with so many tried and true paint neutrals that all appear green in the north west exposed room. I’m anxious to swatch some of your great color recs on the wall today.

Thank you James for your thoughts on colors. Please cover paint colors for WESTERN exposure. After striking out with many samples, I was pleasantly surprised with the effects of SOFT CHAMOIS for gray granite and woods in a Kitchen & an adjacent Family Room with wood floors, tan sofa, blue accents and dark exposed TV components. The challenges are Cool dim mornings begging for light and Warm afternoons pleading for window coverings. I’d like to see what your color choices are for the WEST.

Great video!! I have Shaker Beige in my home and most days I like it. It is paired with Cloud White and - as a warning to others-- never again with Cloud White as in my house it looks like French vanilla ice cream in certain lights. I would change it out in a heartbeat if I could with Cottonballs, or Marscapone. Please, please, please do a video about Shaker Beige, what colours - blues, greens, tans, greys etc work with it. I find it a really tough colour to find lighter colour that will still have enough "jam" - if I can use that word - to work with it as SB does have a commanding presence and whatever you pair it with it needs to hold its own. It as a midtone seems to only play well with other midtones or darker colours. I made the mistake of going 50% lighter in two rooms - both with little natural light coming in. The one that faces both North and my neighbours house (we use if for an office) is tiny but it looks okay - just kind of yellow. The other room a guest bedroom that receives late afternoon North West light and it just looks awful and will be repainted. It is slightly peachy and dingy looking. I also have a bathroom to do with no natural light at all that is really small. I would like to find a colour that is light, airy nuetral enough but still a colour that works with Shaker Beige that I can use in the bathroom - maybe even the ceiling too to get that envelope look but white would also be just fine. (Once I get the popcorn texture off of it... ya... who in their right minds put popcorn ceiling texture in a bathroom even over the tub/shower???) In the bedroom I would love to do a blue or bluey/greeny/grey colour - at least an accent wall but would love to hear other ideas too. Overall in my home, I would like a slightly farmhouse, slightly beachy feel - with a relaxed traditional, maybe even English country nod and not on GREY overload as we have seen in past years. (Also, I had some Revere Pewter in here when we first moved in 3 years ago and it looks dreadful in this house.) My dearest husband loves his wood and yes, in my open concept home I have wood (deep cherry) kitchen cabinets and a lot of our LR furniture and dining room furniture is also deep cherry tones. I KNOW!!!.... but I have to find a way to make all it just work!!! Greens work fantastic with Cherry wood tones so please, please HELP those of us with Shaker Beige understand our options!!!!

Idea for a video: How would you approach choosing a white paint for woodwork in a bathroom with new white subway tile? (Or any tile, I suppose.) Do you try to match the tile, complement it, or ignore it like you might ignore the color of the white toilet?

But James, what paint colors will go with some of these ones you mentioned for the South West part of my house? I have an open floor plan, and live in a Center Hall Colonial. . My formal living room and dining room are North East , and my Kitchen and Family Room are South West. I was thinking of Ally's Earring for the South West part. Ugh, I am so confused. I am painting the wall and ceiling the same color . Doesn’t that make the room look bigger . I am a big fan of behr paint if u can give me an idea in the white family . Also do you use the same sheen on the walls with the ceiling. I was thinking of eggshell for everything. Thank you so much love your videos!

Love Athena. Might try it somewhere. Can you do an explanation of what happens to color when there’s a mix of Northern and Southern light? I currently have a wall separating the north and south side windows in a space (it’s going to be one big kitchen when the wall comes down) and I can’t decide on a cabinet color because I don’t know if it will behave more like it does on the north side or the south side. Have you ever dealt with something like this before?

I gave in to the darkness in the back (north-facing) bedroom. How dark is it? Not only is it north facing, but it backs up on the mountain behind me. It does get some sunlight, but never direct sun. I struggled for months, trying to decide with patches and patches of paint & wallpaper on the walls. I finally went with BM's Rushing River on three walls and a black & cream toile wallpaper on the window wall. I believe it's a good fit and I love the 'teal' tone of the Rushing River.

I finally found something about Mascarpone.
I don't have northern exposure in my flat but I live in a city where the sky is gray for six months a year. I wanted a white that can keep that nasty gray away from my home. Mascarpone certainly does that! And it is true, it does not look yellow and it does not look cream. It is a real, bright white. When the sun touches it, the walls become an amazing golden colour. I have an olive sofa and olive tiles in the kitchen and they bring out some green of the wallpaint around them. Personally, I love this. My walls always look warm and they seem to have a life of their own :).

    Hi!
Would you do a video on color combos for a New England/French feeling kitchen please?
I've done my past kitchens in all white, two shades of silvery grey, and another kitchen in a shrimp-cream color. All worked well.
In the next kitchen, I want to paint the upper cabs in a warm, light cream. Counters will be either natural butcher block or mid tone cream-ochre yellow granite. Base cabs will be either a green, such as October Mist or a blue of similar feeling.
This is for a genuine farmhouse in Maine. I don't do typical farmhouse decor and want the kitchen to feel more historic and genuine, like it's always been like that, yet freshened up. I'd paint the walls the same color as the uppers or a lighter tint of the same. So I'm thinking subtle creamy almond - yellows and subtle greens or blues.
    Ideas?!
    Haven't picked a floor yet.

I live in a small condo (in the metro NYC area) with barely any light. What's worked in the sun-flooded climes where I've also lived (Southern Calif, Dallas, Tulsa, Atlanta) doe NOT work here. Using paint samples, I've found neutrals to be duds. They suck the light and life out of my rooms. Watching video tours of NYC apartments and townhouses, I've discovered that deep saturated colors with low LRVs can give architectural definition and mood lift to small, dim spaces. One fab discovery was painting trim in a black laquer---an old standby for Brooklyn and Manhattan spaces. Incredidble. Just sayin' there's more to life than endless neutrals . . .
