Having listened to two dozen performances of this transcendental masterpiece one more eccentric and willful than the next, it is a relief to savor Trifonov delivering beauty with modesty. Playing like this does not fade.
His facial expressions are fascinating to watch. You can feel the passion. I think that is the real secret of Chopin’s music...it is not the notes...it is the feeling you get once you master the piece and it just flows from within you.....
Pity he can't let his fingers give us the music instead of imposing his facial gestures upon us which I find overly overly dramatic, unnecessary and detracting from the beauty of the music. Chopin, who detested "spectacle", would not have approved. And his hunched back and other mannerisms are as torturous for us watching as no doubt for him playing. One longs (and indeed does) turn away to the pianistry of Ivan Bessonov, whose easy grace, clarity, nuance, color and phrasing Trifonov can only dream of emulating.
I've listened to this many times, and still I have no words. I have began several times to attempt to express what I feel when I listen to this piece, but words simply aren't strong enough. At the start the words subtle and dolce come to mind, as if the piece is the personification of sweetness and playfulness. The piece, and way Trifinov plays it, makes it seem like its not even music at all. It sounds like emotions themselves, joy, love, contentment, courage, lust. This is perhaps the height of Chopins music genius, and Trifinov channels to such and extent that I would even say it would be better than if Chopin himself played it.
You're not alone my friend. The Barcarolle defies any grouping like Chopin's other works, scherzos, preludes, nocturnes, ballades, mazurkas, it belongs to only one category - that of a perfect masterpiece.
I have been listening to Chopin, and Barcarolle since I was 11 yrs old and now at age 70 yrs I still stop and enter sucha beautiful place emotionally and spiritually when I hear it played by such a gifted artist as Trivonov. Bravo Zulu

A real genius, a quote that stood out it to me by Albert Einstein was something like "you are only expert at something when you can explain it simply". This is very prudent here, Trifiniov seems to be able to express such complex music with apparent ease, to the point where I began to see the true intention of every counter-melody, or dissonant chord, in the way chopin intended, of that I didn't understand before.
Trifonov is inconsistent. He can play marvelously or terribly, while Avdeeva is very stable in high standards. He's an intuitive musician while Avdeeva is a rational one, that's why she never fails and really deserved.the first prize.
@@LuisKolodin Hmm I think its more because Avdeeva played more in a typical way Chopin is played (and also very emotionally), Trifonov, for example in his b-minor Sonata played a bit one would play Liszt. Trifonov is one of the finest musicians of our time, maybe a musical genius, but Avdeevas didn't make any mistakes. But its right what you are saying, I think its a lack of experience (he was 19 at this point).

I noted the little melody on the left hand as the right hand does the last high-note flourish before the end: you can hear every note, and it fits perfectly...
He can't be strange enough for me--I love how he feels his music. He reminds me of the first time I saw Andre Watts in concert as a child. It was the first time I saw a concert pianist feel the music. It changed my attitude towards classical music. At the time we didn't have the Internet--had I known Daniil Trifonov existed I would have never stopped my lessons.

I love this piece. However, often as I have heard it in the past, with this version I find myself weeping from start to finish. He is a magician. I am captivated.
What a wonderful interpretation of my favourite composition by Chopin. He does such a marvelous job of really capturing the light and shade of the piece, from the vivid emotions of the more fiery segments down to the sweetness and delicacy of the quieter passages. I don't know of any other piece by Chopin that really covers such a range of feeling - I fell in love with it the very first time I heard it and the feeling continues decades later. My favourite interpretation has always been that of Stephen Kovacevich, and I still think it may shade Trifinov's, which seems to rush over some of the up-tempo passages, but that's simply me I guess. My only other reservation is that of Trifonov's posture - it looks severely hunched over at times and can't be good for his back.
Waow! Never boring, Trifonov is magical, even with at 6.57 a slight mistake. I am really in that boat, experiencing all sorts of feelings, emotions. Tender light reflecting on the sloshing water, a small storm rocking the boat, pain, passion, melancholy, meditative thoughts, joy ... the stream of life. How wonderful, Trifonov takes you away in that boat, totally entrancing. I did not want to get off, thank you so much mr Trifonov.
That slight mistake actually shows how incredibly difficult it is to play this technically demanding piece accurately, not to mention with the expression and emotion as presented by Trifonov in this performance! One of the best, if not the best I've heard.
Don't worry about Danill's back. He has perfected the art of opening the muscles of his back through swimming. He walks totally straight. He knows what he is doing.
I love this performer. Some people might not like the faces he makes, but I think he is just amazing, a true successor of Horowitz... Serkin, and even Kissin, some my favorite Russian pianist.
A literal, everything he plays is perfectly controlled by the mind, its like listening to a robot with emotions play the piano. And his technique and musicality is incredible as well, so this only makes it better

I am sick and tired of those competitions : in a way, their very idea is medieval, and quite disrespectful to artists.
The idea of a bunch of people pretending to tell and point out who would play better is increasingly getting on my nerves, as time goes buy.
I think it’s quite art killing actually : opus 60, for instance, is now played absolutely identically everywhere !
