      I did see the thread on the camaro 6th. Interesting info... Let me know if you have any updates.
      2 questions from your videos. So do manuals transmissions not have that catalytic "safety" feature? Also did you say in a video the manual transmissions dont have the active fuel management?
      Thanks again

    Can you really test the effects of a CAI while the car is standing still with the hood up? I was under the impression that a CAI improves engine performance by drawing in cooler air from the grill instead of breathing the heated air swirling inside the engine bay.

    dude awesome video! I installed the green drop in filter in the stock box. the reason why is because I looked at the stock intake and thought there is no way it's restrictive. I will install the throttle body and msd manifold with testing. it will be on my channel when I get the installation done. also did some exhaust mods to the stock exhaust and explain in one of my videos. thanks again for making this video!

    Something to note here. The AC being on most likely did not have any effect. I haven't tuned a new Camaro yet, but the 5th Gens and the new Corvettes as well as Chevy Cruze's and Silverados have a setting in the tune, that after either a certain RPM (varies but my 2011 Camaro was 4500RPM), or certain amount of throttle (varies but my 2011 Camaro was 90%) the AC compressor switches off. So knowing that when he went wide open on throttle on Dyno I'm 99.5% sure it switched it off.
    Great test btw, so overall i really think there was a decent bump in HP and TQ.

    • @Lethalgarage
      @Lethalgarage  8 років тому +1

      +PWRVTEC The increase I don't think came from any of the CAI's. But the exhaust.

    If the point of cold air intakes is to prevent engine heat from preheating the air that goes into the engine then wouldn't letting the engine cool before each run work against the cold air intakes? I would think that the engine would need to be hot already to see any gain from a cold air intake system.
    With a cold engine the air going in would be 97 degrees, if the engine was hot the air might be preheated to say 110, the cold air intake would supposedly prevent this preheating.

    • @Lethalgarage
      @Lethalgarage  8 років тому +1

      The big issue is if you don;t let it run the entire motor heat soaks... the coolants, oils, fluids, etc overheat and the entire motor will drop a bit in power.

    • @SMOKINGdaFUNK
      @SMOKINGdaFUNK 8 років тому +1

      +Lethalhammer
      I had the same thoughts on this heat issue. one of the first things I noticed about the cold air induction was that it had insulation on the inside of the air box. this to me was a "wow this must really help keep out heat". maybe you could simulate this on the stock box by adding a thin layer to the outside of the stock box for the next test. even if we're only talking about initial engine heat that R5-R7 rated insulation may be the difference we seen in this testing between stock and the CAI.

    RotoFab is the best because of the open cavity where the filter is. Yea, those closed boxes, keep the air cooler that is being sucked in and it looks purty with the window but they actually did a test with the factory air box. They literally just took the top cover off and dyno tested it, and instantly gained 15, with the factory filter and 20, with a K&N filter. So, that proves an open box CAI is the way to go.

    Great video!
    As mentioned, the AC compressor disengages at WOT so the AC being on did not likely affect HP...especially not up in the top of the rpm range.
    Why does that shop not use an SAE correction factor? That would help mitigate the extreme temps for comparison purposes.
    Lastly, why does the car throw a puff of black smoke (fuel rich) at the top of the pulls? Is the AFR THAT rich or is something else going on? (Misfire)..
    Great job on the vid as usual....and saving all of your subscribers $400 on cold air intakes...lol

    • @Lethalgarage
      @Lethalgarage  8 років тому

      +ajrothm I think it has to do with the crap these motors are building off into the cats getting blown out at WOT.
      As for the AC on or off. We saw a 376 -395hp reading difference. So with it on, we saw some low numbers regardless of the Tech that disengaged it at WOT.

    I have never been sold on the idea of CAI increasing power and I think you just proved my point. However, I do run K&N drop in filters in the stock air box of my 2013 Camaro LS3. When you dyno'd the car with the stock box, was there a paper filter installed? If so, I would love to see the results of a stock air box run comparing a paper GM filter and a K&N drop in replacement filter. From my experience with the K&N, there is a performance sound difference that the cotton filter makes over the paper filter alone. Here is my theory on these CAI systems. I think that any power gain is due to the filter used and not necessarily the design of the air box. This is the most in depth video on cold air boxes on uTube. Great job!

    The CAI needs the tune. The car is tuned for the stock air box. MAF Sensor is moved further away from air filter yes it makes a difference and needs to have the tune for the new air flow of the CAI. The readings will be off.

    wouldnt you think that when GM did their testing on their stock cold air induction system for the camaro that if they thought there was any way to pull a few more H.P.s and torques out of a stock enigne by changing the air box they would have done just that. i dont think changing over to a c.a.i. will make that much difference

    Big 3 are in the horsepower wars, they won’t leave free hp on the table to make their intakes “quieter”. You don’t buy these cars to be quiet. Chambers in a stock intake can be there to handle airflow anomalies by adding volume where neeeded. I’m no engineer, but I trust the actual engineers who have looked at everything they can to get a few hp over their competition. Maybe CAIs will have more effect on luxury cars or trucks. Heck, my stock setup is a CAI with air coming in from a hood scoop, headlight and fender.

    • @Lethalgarage

      If the vehicle is tuned with an aftermarket tune, the CAI intake looses power over stock.
      But they advertise this product without a tune should make power gains.

    In an everyday aspect your hood is down. I know stock airboxes now for the coyote and the GM can flow more than you'll produce NA. Can support up to 500+. Best thing to do is a drop in filter.
    Do this test hood closed and you'll see even crazier results. The open filters will pull in some engine bay air where stock pulls only external air.

    Sorry but I have tested EVERY CAI kit out there, on 5.0's, 2004-06 GTO's and Camaos 4th, 5th and 6th gen, none of them make any power to write hone about (under 4 hp). These tests must be conducted with the "hood closed" in order for results to not be skewed. Putting airflow over the air intake that is not there while actually driving is called altering the facts. Tuning/speed shops are in tbe business of making $ and snake oil sales. I've been on both sides. Also from a flow dynamics stand point. Every 30° bend in tubinf creates a choke point that reduces flow by 6-8%. On the cars I mentioned theres close to 60°-70° bend, so 15-17% airflow restriction. That translstes to a power loss of about 23-28hp losses. A straight in flow would eliminate this, like the old C6 vettes with a air intake vent/slit on the nose of the hood and on older pre 2016 5fh gen Camaro V8's. Problem is the air intake tubes curved to much.

    • @Lethalgarage

      The only intake we have tested that did better than numbers within margins of error are the Roto-Fab setups. The Big Gulp on a built motor picked up significant power gains.

Secondly I bought a $1000 intercooler from them and it fit like shit. I pulled all their stuff off, bought ETS products and never looked back. I would never run a Mishimoto product on my Camaro. Hey I just watch your vid great advice but I did notice that you had the tops of the C.A.I. Installed on your Dyno runs which is a restriction also you have a California car where the car is tuned extra lean to meet your states emissions laws (sucks ass) I think you maxed out your car with the ported throttle body and the exhaust system. You might get a little more out of it with headers as the car is, but you need a tune before you will see any more real gains and be able to take advantage of a C.A.I.

I don't want to jack up the factory warranty for sure, but if it doesn't need a tune, then that's the way to go with the factory airbox K&N high flow filter and call it a day. The car I drove with it ( but didn't purchase ) there was a noticeable difference from a normal 2016 stock car. Thanks for your input - And a big thanks for all your video's ... there some good info here on your channel. Rasie some money for that ZL-1 !

      +Dennis Ehman I am going to see if GM offers a tune and review test all the intakes again.

    i seen another youtuber get basically the same results when he put a cold air intake on a honda s2000 he dynod both stock and after market and it showed he lost hp and trq over stock intake i think that buying a cold air intake is just a wast of money on certain cars it seems that the factory got it right the first time

      +thelma duffy but was that car turbo ed? We did a little experiment while on the dyno and did a smaller diameter tube and a stack filter and saw big HP and TQ gains.

      no it was a normally aspirated 2.0 lt 4 cylinder stock engine look under "cold air intakes debunked"

      +thelma duffy every motor is different. My 5th gen V6 on dyno got 15hp and 12trq on the dyno.

      yes i believe that but on some engines like 6.2 ls1 and the 2.0 vetech motor on the honda s2000 i believe they got it right. I'm glad your doing this testing it let me know what I'm going to buy for my 6th gen ss i have already put on the mishimoto catch can that you recommended and I'm planing on putting on the vitesse throttle controller

    I watched the whole video. Are you still going to be giving away one of these? I'm definitely not going to buy one anymore. Unless Gm still releases one with a tune. (which I don't think is going to happen anymore)

    • @Lethalgarage

      Not sure what I am going to do with them just yet. I want to hold on to all of them for the next round of testing at minimum.

    Where does the stock intake, as well as the other two actually draw air in from?

    • @Lethalgarage

      The front right side of the grille if you;re looking at it from the front.

    Cold air intakes, headers, exhaust mods do nothing without tuning the car with them.

    The worst thing someone could do is buy you a Dyno machine haha. You would just be gone from 5am until 10pm every night testing all these aftermarket parts haha. Then the combinations. To finish this up for you all, I have a stock 2014 Camaro SS, almost new still (4889 miles). Been garaged and driven minimal. Nothing upgraded!. Ill get the RotoFab and do a before Dyno with stock, and then install the RotoFab and do a Dyno test. Ill wait 1 week after driving with RotoFab and do another Dyno test. Then upload it here.

    My engineering side is cringing every time he says ft-lb. It's lb-ft when you're talking about torque, ft-lb is a different unit of measurement.

    I don't drive my car with the hood up...I don't drive my car without a hood, either. Why can't you run the tests with the hood closed so we know how good/bad these things are at drawing in 'outside' air? Tests with the hood up look bogus to me.

    • @Lethalgarage
      @Lethalgarage  Місяць тому

      @@Drafted066 because on a stand still dyno. Hood closed with zero air flow, that going to give amazing results…. /facepalm
