Because fairy type was designed as an antithesis to scary tropes, like dragons, bugs, evil, and physical might. You could argue that ghosts should be part of that too, but that would have definitely pushed the type over the edge.
Each new type added has been in large part a response to another type being too strong. Makes you wonder if we'll ever see a new type come out to respond to Fairy
It would seem that Clefable is not Unaware of its place in the meta, as its ability to nullify the entire Dragon type and any opponent's stat changes is truly quite powerful. In other news, Horsea has played the "4x Weakness" card by using a Water-type move against Macargo. I am not sure the magma snail will be able to survive this, unless it is holding a Focus Sash.
I feel like there’s a Pokémon that appreciated the addition of Fairy-Types so much that even Game Freak effectively referenced this in The Indigo Disk. Players may recall Lacey having an Exacdrill on her Fairy-Type team, which at first glance only looks like a reference to who her father is. But credit where credit is due for Game Freak making us aware of this type synergy- this thing has winning matchups not only against most Fairy-Types, but also Poison, Steel, and is even a Steel-Type itself that can lure out Fire-Types with its own Ground STAB. The only other Pokémon who even comes close is Heatran, who does quad-resist Fairy and has good matchups into Fire (thanks to Flash Fire), Poison, and Steel, but is also noticeably slower and doesn’t have some of the extra utility Excadrill does, such as Rapid Spin, Sand Rush, and Swords Dance.
I really feel like people over exaggerate how good fairy is. It is the best type in the game yes. Especially over time as more good offensive steel and poison types have been introduced I dont think its correct to call it broken. I think the ghost type currently is much more of a problem and needs a type chart change more than fairy for example.
I actually agree, honestly. Fairy's seen as broken because it's a prime counter to three other incredible Types, and its existence validates a bunch of Poison-Types that otherwise would have rotted in NU. Ghost on the other hand is a LUDICROUS offensive Type, only balanced by Shadow Ball's low BP. I think I'd make Rock resist Ghost, due to tombstones + ceremonial salts, and to give it SOMETHING over Ground.
I feel like steel is clearly better, but I know why some people believe fairy is better than steel: Their weaknesses. Fire, Fighting, and Ground moves are crucial for some Pokemon, but Poison is extremely uncommon coverage. Steel is still pretty common coverage, though.
@@kailesperance1922 yeah steel is the best defensive type and ghost is the best offensive type but people hate fairy because it's like 2nd best defensive and 4/5th best offensive at the same time
The reason you dont see physical Tapu Koko or Fairy moves on Tapu Bulu is because they don't have access to any physical Fairy moves. Gamefreak thought it was clever to give Tapu Fini and Tapu Lelu (two special attackers with low attack) Play Rough but did not allow the physical Tapus to use the move. Insane decision.
Diancie is one of my favorite mega pokemon. I love that the mega form has significantly lower defenses than the base form. Most megs you just always mega evolve off the rip, but diancie can hold off on the mega to live certain key hits but still do enough damage to take out the attacker, then evolve when it needs the attack and speed boosts
Re: 35:59 Magearna lost Z-moves but it got Stored Power and Draining Kiss which are pretty much the perfect moves for a bulky boosting sweeper. Stored Power on a mon that gets this many boosts this easily is nuts and it could run CM+Shift Gear or CM+ID sets that could now heal while attacking. It also got Trick which made Specs a nasty piece of work too.
Excellent work as always Mr Cool. This was a fairly informative video. I hope the horse wars end in a peaceful resolution. However I do once again ask for your support in informing the masses on the daily struggles forgotten evolution such as Raichu go through, thank you for your time.
Magcargo should harness the terastal crystals in order to transform to a dragon type. That way, horsea becomes envious of him being what it always dreamed to become
Love the detail on Gen 7 OU on this one (not much choice with the release of the Tapus). It gets a bad wrap for being broken but it's still the metagame I choose to play (Gen 7 Ubers ladder sadly doesn't seem to exist on PO anymore) and great to see it covered in detail. All your analysis on it is spot on.
About the use of Scald on Tapu Fini in Gen VII that you mention at 28:54, another scenario where it becomes a much better click is when you come back in right as the misty terrain is about to fade (more common when there's a Fini on the opponent's team as well). In that sense, Scald kind of feels like it creates a win-win situation, because you are either safe from status yourself or threaten to spread it. There's also Gen VIII, where defog removes terrain effects, and opposing defoggers suddenly have to fear the burn. Granted, that barely comes up, because the common defoggers all happen to fly anyway (unless they switch out to a grounded physical threat afterwards). But I always thought this was an interesting little interaction, where they might become less inclined to remove hazards in fear of the status. Of course, people probably wouldn't run it based on these fringe cases alone.
As annoying as it is, Clefable is one of the most balanced Pokemon ever made: has great typing, two great abilities, and an extensive move pool but zero stats over 100
Fairy/Steel is absolutely insane. If you count every type's weaknesses and resistances, Steel/Fairy is the best type combination with its 8 resistances, 1 quad resistance, 2 immunities, and only 2 weaknesses.
Fairy types really grew on me over the gens. One of my favorite Magearna sets early gen 7 was fightinium z focus blast with ice beam, t bolt and shift gear. It put in a lot of work against common cores like skarm bliss and celesteela/pex/mega venusaur. Gen 8 I used unaware weakness policy stored power clef able to consistently hit high ladder.
Thinking about it now, how would the meta game be if all terrains activated Quark drive and all weathers activated Protosynthesis? But each terrain only activated one type of stat? And never a speed boost.
"At the Trident" I never thought Jimmy would reference Game of Thrones/ASoIaF in one of his videos. Although, I did watch the Glidus episode of The Fridge.
One muse I’ve been milling over is how the field of competitive Pokemon would change if the fairy type had been there at the very start, Clefable and Wigglytuff and all their pals with pink power at the get go. It certainly would make or break a fair few Pokemon; I think Gen two Mr Mine would be particularly happy for the buff
It's very interesting in Gen 1, what with so many of the types Fairy interacts with not being around or being near non-existent. Only one Dragon family (and only Dragon Rage to be inmune to), no Steel or Dark, Poison and Fighting practically not being real types... Goes to show how much the game has changed.
@@masterplusmargarita It's fascinating to consider. No real need to counter dragon or fighting, with how powerful Blizzard and Psychic were. Fairies at least don't worry about poison, since none of the poisons could handle psychics. Normal and Psychic would still dominate, but fairy can hit the stride in gen two when dark comes around and none of the steels coped well with fire coverage. Depends if they got good moves too. If Moonblast was there from the start, they'd be fine when gen two rolled up and darks and Kingdra needed a hit, but if they only had the likes of Draining Kiss or Fairy Wind, be a bit of struggle XD
I think it’s kinda funny that, similar to Steel type, Fairy was introduced to reign in other types to nerf them a bit but then the new type just became the new best type instead.
I think at this point I don't think Fairy is the clear #1 type. I view it as a sort of midground in offense and defense compared to Steel being the best defensive type and Dark/Ghost being the best offensive types. I do think Steel/Fairy is still probably the best type combination although Steel/Ghost is pretty ridiculous too. Edit: Also, I don't think Magearna being banned in Gen 8 was just because the power level decreased (although that was a factor as well). Magearna gained Stored Power and I believe Draining Kiss as well. Its double boosting set with those 2 moves basically made it the perfect sweeper.
Historians will recall the battle of the trident being the deciding Battle of Robert's Rebellion, however, Jimothy's eye-witness account reveal a much more significant spectacle. The deciding battle between Magcargo and Horsea. Notabley, Horsea's Horseguard appear absent for this fight.
in gen 7 due to order change being on the same turn as mega evolving and the slight nerf to sucker punch and extra counters made it more challenging for mega mawile but having good defenses intimidate and the highest attack in the game by far (more even than a choice band deoxys-attack) did still make mega-mawile possibly a bit too much especially with having an amazing move set with coverage for every single one of your weaknesses and swords dance and alright utility for doubles via a powerful rock slide. though the slow speed is a bit weakness for sure.
Magearna was banned from gen 8 because of Shift Gear, Calm Mind, Stored Power, and Draining Kiss. That set was impossibly good and made it an unstoppable monster. With team support and its good stats, it was more like a gen 3 top tier in its versatility and EV tweaking, it could literally do whatever it wanted in a team slot and get away with it, while all the other mons struggled to manage their own niches in comparison. I personally think its peak modern competitive design, because that versatility makes for a very interesting pokemon that can cover many archetypes and roles with the right stat spread and items. If more mons were designed like Mag, I think the meta would benefit from it.
If you wanna be pedantic about it, freeze dry was introduced in gen 6, not gen 7, though since it was Aurorus’s signature move back then it didn’t really feel like it existed til gen 7
Gardevoir was my favorite pokemon before fairy type existed and to this day it is still my favorite. One prime benefit of the fairy type as you discussed is it appears care was taken to (most) pokemon it was given to post launch. Clefable was garbage before fairy type but now its simply well rounded and fits well despite being statistically terrible. I dont think it needs a nerf as long as the same care is taken in design of future fairy types and we dont get more mags.
This horse council business has become completely unstable. They are forgetting why the horse council was created in the first place. Only those with a high enough power(of the horse variety) were able to join and control things from behind the scenes. I think it would behoove everyone to reign things in and take a look at the larger picture. They shouldn’t be fighting each other, they should be fighting so seahorses and snailhorses and even ryhorses can get along and control the world from the shadows.
High Horsepower automatically debunks you as a horse, because a draft horse cannot muster more power than it has, and a non-draft horse cannot muster more power than a draft horse, and I doubt there has been any lifeform on this planet that could muster the same power as _100K_ draft horses.
I like how fairy is more "symetric" compared to most types. when I say symetric I mean that in most cases it hits super effectively the same types it resists (with a few exceprions) and is weak to the same types that resist it. I wish other types were this symetric.
I get that it'd make things easier to remember but it would probably make balance pretty much like a hideous version of Gen1. The best type is normal or steel. Normal bc it cant be hit super effectively but can hit through movepool everything else supereffectively and steel because it resists everything and must therefore be supereffective on everything. Fighting types wouldnt have enough resistances to be worth it but the moves would be on every single normal type pokemon.
@@madder9166 i know. I didn't mean to say that they should change the type chart(okay maybe they could buff a little the bug type but not much else). What I meant was that I wish all types were like that ever since gen 1.
Although I really appreciate the offensive buffs to (particularly) poison and steel, GF's logic to balance the type chart just wasn't sound. They really needed to introduce a couple new types (round it to 20 we'll say) to craft a better dynamic, because the way they went about it by giving a single new type resistance (or immunity) to the best attacking types and weakness to the worst was just a bad/short sighted band-aid fix to the situation. I think at least the fact Fairy is neutral to itself was a good decision though, better dynamic than dragons flailing their meteors at each other or steels not being able to dent each other with their iron heads. I do agree with you that a type being busted doesn't necessarily mean it can't be balanced around other factors like BST/abilities/moves, and honestly with how insane power creep has gotten I appreciate that mentality more than ever, it's just a shame that for the most part they've gone in the complete opposite direction with Mons like Tapus, Zacian, Xerneas, etc.
Magearna going to Ubers in gen 8 wasn’t about reverse power creep, it’s cause mag got buffed. Draining kiss to assist on CM sets and trick for specs were the big ones I think
@bubbykins4864 Do you not understand the concept of chip damage? Sandstorm, leech seed, burn, rocky helmet, why do you think they are all valuable? U turn is valuable not only because it switches, but because of that chip damage. Fairy is overpowered, so having it 2x instead of 1/2x damage is huge for knocking it down a bit
@@Fred_Die You don't need SE hits for chip damage, as Stealth Rocks, Spikes, etc. all prove. The only way your suggestion would actually buff Bug types as a whole as opposed to specifically Scizor is if STAB altered the offensive profile of moves, because as it is right now, type balance almost entirely falls upon the defensive profile.

I still watch by to the end but what gets me here is the story
I love his humor
I love how this type has been around less than half the time of the others but the video is nearly as long as the others.
Also fairy needs a balance check - personally around bug type resist
The day a ground fairy type is released is the day competitive pokemon is finished.

36:01 it actually got a big buff in gen8 with draining kiss. That thing could calm mind behind screen with weakness policy and recover every thing with draining kiss. A true monster, given previous sets were still top tier
i will never understand why they made fairy resist bug when it seems like it should be the other way around as fairies wont want to be around bugs
Because fairy type was designed as an antithesis to scary tropes, like dragons, bugs, evil, and physical might. You could argue that ghosts should be part of that too, but that would have definitely pushed the type over the edge.
@@TheWanderingNight thanks now i have to go to the doctor to fix my brain
Slurpuff A little cake guy
@@Glory2Snowstar Garganacl: Am I a joke to you?
I feel like steel is clearly better, but I know why some people believe fairy is better than steel: Their weaknesses. Fire, Fighting, and Ground moves are crucial for some Pokemon, but Poison is extremely uncommon coverage. Steel is still pretty common coverage, though.
@@kailesperance1922 yeah steel is the best defensive type and ghost is the best offensive type but people hate fairy because it's like 2nd best defensive and 4/5th best offensive at the same time
why are these videos so informative, relaxing, long af, enjoyable and intriguing all at once! stop it bro!
the type that's existed for four gens takes just as much time to cover as the original fifteen. this is a sign of disastrous things to come, folks
Re: 35:59
Magearna lost Z-moves but it got Stored Power and Draining Kiss which are pretty much the perfect moves for a bulky boosting sweeper.

Fairy with normal type move pool is kinda nuts
PONYTA NEEDS TO JUMP IN FRONT OF THE BUBBLEBEAM TO STOP THIS MADNESS
As annoying as it is, Clefable is one of the most balanced Pokemon ever made: has great typing, two great abilities, and an extensive move pool but zero stats over 100
Clefable is even broken as normal type in gen 4 , magic guard too strong.
@@EggscellentTreefunny that Clefable didn’t become OU in Gen IV until after it was discovered to be good in Gen VI and beyond.
Wigglytuff is my second favorite Pokémon and therefore is my favorite normal and fairy type. I'm also a big fan of Aromatisse.
Tinkaton is one of my favorite new designs and fun to use! It's shiny needed more love I think though xD;
8:07 God of War mentioned
Fairy type has only been around for 4 generations and the video is still longer than the poison type video, this is tragic folks
It’s a little upsetting to realize that fairy has been around for over 10 years 👵👴
Thinking about it now, how would the meta game be if all terrains activated Quark drive and all weathers activated Protosynthesis? But each terrain only activated one type of stat? And never a speed boost.
Mr Jim Othy this is your 666th video
It would be very relevant for Gens 3, 4, and 5. The metas would be very different for sure.
Is the most important battle of our life time a reference to "a song of ice and fire"?
George was actually inspired by my work.
Looking at it now it makes so much sense
I heard that prince lewyn maretell of paldea, one of the horseguard, betrayed horsea, it is a good thing that lyn cor-bray was able to slay him
Right as I'm cooking lunch
in gen 7 due to order change being on the same turn as mega evolving and the slight nerf to sucker punch and extra counters made it more challenging for mega mawile but having good defenses intimidate and the highest attack in the game by far (more even than a choice band deoxys-attack) did still make mega-mawile possibly a bit too much especially with having an amazing move set with coverage for every single one of your weaknesses and swords dance and alright utility for doubles via a powerful rock slide. though the slow speed is a bit weakness for sure.
Horsea, finally getting the attention they deserve
If you wanna be pedantic about it, freeze dry was introduced in gen 6, not gen 7, though since it was Aurorus’s signature move back then it didn’t really feel like it existed til gen 7
New subscriber here. Love the content. Keep it up!!
Wish you talked about how Fairy might have impacted the meta if the Pokémon who had the typing now had the type in earlier gens.
I dont think it needs a nerf as long as the same care is taken in design of future fairy types and we dont get more mags.
it was not garBage Before fairy type lol it just was popular in gen 4 ou after fairy type
11 years in and I'm still not fully learned the typing match-ups... supereffective against Fighting for no reason 😅
Ah yes Tapu Lele: the teacup dweller
I like how fairy is more "symetric" compared to most types.
when I say symetric I mean that in most cases it hits super effectively the same types it resists (with a few exceprions) and is weak to the same types that resist it.
I wish other types were this symetric.
I think Fairy should also be super effective against itself like dragon
I still think Fairy should be weak to bug instead of resistant.
No, it should be a _mutual_ resist. It's better to buff Bug rather than further buff pivots.
Should've changed bug to a weakness rather then a resistance to balance it out
What did resisting U-Turn ever do to you? That's right, nothing.
Magcargo fought valiantly, Magcargo fought nobly, Magcargo fought honourably. And Magcargo died.

“Doubling your attack has multiplicative power” yes Jim, doubling is in fact just 2x which is in fact, multiplication by 2
He should have elaborated but it’s more than just doubling your base attack stat, it doubles your attack stat after EVs as well, so you get double EVs too.
