Jim, do you think any Gen 3 Ubers could be considered for Gen 3 OU? I think that could make an interesting discussion regarding viability/possible impact on the metagame
Such insight as “it’s only 50% accurate but if you hit it’s a great move” is what makes me keep coming back to the Jimothy Cool channel. With this newfound wisdom I went looking for some other great moves and found this one called fissure. It literally instakills the opponent! Why aren’t more people talking about this?
In competitive, it's only an option in VGC. Other formats heavily limit the usage of Fissure for being quote: 'uncompetitive,' end quote. It's a bad move anyways, since it can't hit Flying types, Flying is meta. Guillotine has the same effect but suffers from the same issue with Ghost types. Bad move too, Ghost is meta. It also is heavily limited in other formats besides BGC. Sheer Cold is definitely the best one, but it's got super limited availability, which hampers it's effectiveness. Same as Guillotine and Fissure, it also is heavily limited formats besides VCG.
@@aquatazer I know. I was too. You really thought Fissure was bad because it can't hit Flying types? It's bad because it can't hit anything... And I intentionally misspelled VGC after talking about Fissure. I just wanted to sprinkle in a little bit of truth in that it's only an option in VGC. That's all. Edit: YES, I know Sheer Cold and Fissure recently won VGC. That doesn't mean that they are great moves to put on every Pokemon.
Actually Flareon's niche in rby comes from using tail whip You use it on a paralized Starmie to reaply it's speed drop and make body slam into hyper beam a ko
This channel has done a lot of great things. The greatest thing it’s done is shine a light on magcargo. Not that it needed it of course, but appreciated nonetheless.
I feel fire is not actually as defensive as it would seem Ice moves are typically thrown around by water types Steel is a lackluster offensive type even with Fairies Grass is a lackluster offensive type Bug is a lackluster offensive type besides U-Turn which is nice but can land the fire type in literal hot water Fire res is fine though most fire moves are used by fire pokemon so it's a stalemate. I feel the introduction of Fairy type is what really puts fire types on the map defensively. And as someone else points out. Fire has some horrible resistances to common and dangerous types: Ground, Rock, and Water are not types you want to be weak to.
One of the videos I've been waiting for the most. Dragon, normal, steel, and the very long water type Pokemon videos will be here before we know it. Thank you
Ninetales in RBY can use fire spin which lets it safely chip jynx lead into fire blast KO range and if it misses and gets slept it’s a good sleep absorber since it likely won’t do much else than ruin jynx’s day. Very niche but notably more consistent than flareon using tail whip to stack paralysis speed drops, and not the most flaccid mon in the game like charizard. Moltres is definitely the best though.
This is the only channel where I watch for the ads because I wanna hear about horsea wanting to see his friend ponyta. I haven’t played competitive Pokémon in my entire life lol
Magcargo not being immune to water is a war crime, it makes sense too, its a lava-pokemon, so its so hot water should evaporate. Isn't one 4x weakness enough?
@jimothycool I appreciate how you organize your videos, explain things well, and how its not clickbaity or full of unnecessary filler. Like I enjoy learning about gen 3-6 onwards (the ones I got to experience most) and the video chapters and formatting make it easy for me to watch just that. And how you explain things makes it easy to learn even for people who aren't super experienced with a specific format.
Something that kept coming up in relation to Volcarona (and Fire types in general) in this video was they're relation to mechanics changes, such as Steal Rocks, Boots, and Terra. I'd love to see a video about something like "Pokemon most buffed/nerfed by mechanic changes"
15:47 We should also give a shoutout to Charizard's coolest set in gen 3 OU the sunny day sweeper set. It rans Fire Blast, Sunny Day, Substitute and Blast Burn (yes Blast Burn) with the item petaya berry. It comes in on something like Choice Band Dugtrio stuck into Earthquake, uses that opportunity to set up a sub, uses sunny day the next turn and then subs constantly until it puts itself in both Blaze and Petaya Berry range. Sunny Day, blaze, petaya boosted Blast Burn OHKOs both Blissey and Suicune (after spikes chip) while Fire Blast OHKOs common resists such as Salamence and of course everything else. Its not the most consistent but damn is it hilarious and satisfying to pull off. And Charizard's coverage option help a lot in scaring certain threats that would want to come in on a sub
Not to put pressure on, but I'm hoping/looking forward to you doing these vids for each type, I feel like I always come away with some new strat or knowledge I wasn't aware of before
I'm also a big fan of Fire types. My personal one is Charizard, this was my first mon ever back in Pokémon Red, but big credits to the forgotten Rapidash
Shoutout to Gen 3 Arcanine for having a great ability, the best priority attack move (can be life saving vs Dug) and having a Base Stat Total thats higher than any non (pseudo) legendary (and Slaking).
Stealth rocks are the single worst thing to happen to pokemon im not going to lie. Fire type’s defensive and offensive profile is amazing; it’s just one move that forces them to the sidelines
5:35 if you didn't know crits ignore your boost in Gen 1 then I might as well add that they also ignore defensive boosts and debuffs. So if someone is -2 def and you land a crit you'll do less then if you landed a noncrit because crits also aren't 2.5x damage I believe it's a range of some number
Jimothy you should play Gen 4 UU, Arcanine is fantastic, and Moltres in Gen 4 UU is probably my favorite Pokémon to use in a competitive format it just feels so powerful but you have to work to get rocks off the field and remove certain water types first. But once you do Moltres just feels like an Ubers mon running around in a lower tier.
Per your request, your local competitive RBY nuance whiz reporting Something you haven’t mentioned in regards to the partial trapping moves (Wrap/Clamp/Fire Spin) in particular is allowing the user to switch risk free the following turn. I calculated the number of RBY games I’ve played since 2003 in the Netbattle days, and the lower bound is 6 digits worth. This is notable because I literally cannot play an OU game without using at least one risky but fun ‘mon per game. Victreebel with Sleep/SD/Hyper Beam/Wrap is a 6th slot staple Imagine your Vic is out against a 50% health Starmie. You know they’re getting out of there and have a perfectly safe way to maneuver around you Instead of firing off a Razor Leaf, attempt to predict with SD, or maybe trying to catch a sleep, you read their obvious, safe middle middle ground switch and use Wrap Momentum is now back in your favor. You can switch now freely next turn. There are now a plethora of threats to switch to. Maybe you just wanted to lure out X Pokémon. Maybe you just wanted to get Vic out of there. Lots of optionality after hitting them with Wrap. Also, don’t sleep on a +2 wrap and bluffing HB or Razor Leaf Best way to think about it for those who are even more confused at reading this…RBY Wrap can also function as a risk free (as long as it lands) Baton Pass
I've been tormented for months now trying to figure out what the song is that plays at 1:00. I think it's Iron Mugulis messing with me. Does anyone in the comments have enough horse power to know what the name of the song is so I can add it to my chill game music playlist?
Charizard is much better than Flareon in RBY due to better moves and being faster. Swords Dance is key in making it go from Poorsman Moltres to its own thing. Swords Dance, Hyper Beam, Fire Blast and either Earthquake/Body Slam is dangerous if used right.
Huh! I can't say I was expecting Rapidash to ever turn up, but I'm surprised to realize Arcanine is a purely VGC Pokemon. Could have sworn he'd pop out at some point, especially if we're making Flareon mentions (I mean I love the fluffy guy, but we know..)
Fire types have had kind of a rough experience in competitive Pokemon. They started out terrible in the very early games, and always seemed to get inadvertently punished by the addition of new mechanics to the series.
Fire has always been my favorite type as well. Typhlosion was my first starter, and he was pretty awesome. I liked camerupt alot too. My favorite fire of all has to be darmanitan tho. Carried me through black on my first playthrough.
it's still weird that fire of all types is this bland. right when they were picking up speed they made stealth rock, all the while water got to be one of the best types in the game. for a while fire blast was just the anti skarmory attack you'd put on a dragon or tyranitar since that's all it was really good for. (i mean i'd never use fire blast over flamethrower under any circumstances but the point still stands.) when FIRE is known for its DEFENSIVE traits rather than its offensive ones, then you know something's gone horribly wrong.
Not to be negative about new info but you just recently found out that crits negate boosts lol? It comes up a ton watching speedruns so it's often brought up for me but glad you know now
What you can do with Gen 1 Flareon is run Tail Whip on it. If you’re paralyzed, and a Starmie that’s switching in is also paralyzed, you can Tail Whip it as it comes in to not only lower its Defense, but re-apply the Paralysis speed-drop, making your paralyzed Flareon faster than the paralyzed Starmie. Flareon Hyper Beam vs. -1 Starmie: 217-256 (67.1 - 79.2%) - guaranteed 2HKO Needs some chip, but it’s not difficult to get it to that range with your teammates. Pray you don’t get paralyzed as you try to Hyper Beam it, though LOL
Torkoal is ZU in Gen 7 despite having Drought because the ability Drought itself was banned in lower tiers, and with just White Smoke Torkoal was only able to perform at ZU
Gen 1 Fire types are lowkey almost great because the threat of burn forces out the two best Pokémon in the game in addition to stacking passive damage with Fire Spin before taking advantage of pivoting off of the partial trapping effect. If it wasn't for the 70% accuracy on that move, Moltres would be able to pretty much dictate the pace of a match on its own.
No, only the Life Orb damage Magic Guard does stop the recoil damage, alongside the Life Orb damage but can’t double down on the Life Orb boost like Sheer Force can Also there’s no physical Magic Guard users……….for now
Seeing you talk about Fire types getting nerfed for no reason with the release of Stealth Rocks, could you make a video about Pokemon that unfortunately got hit in the crossfire? Kecleon getting nerfed due to Protean Greninja is a good example
Fire Spin doesn’t heal Freeze because only moves that can Burn do that. And Burn is horrible in Gen 1 most of the time because it is Para and Freeze immunity. Certain mons become unkillable when Burned.
What do you think would be the most interesting Pokémon to be dropped into RBY OU with RBY mechanics? They wouldn’t take the moves, abilities, or types from games that weren’t RBY but just their stats and move pool (limited to moves available in RBY). My thoughts would be Bouffalant as a pseudo lax/Tauros or Banette as a physical pure ghost with stats and a move pool that are still conceivable by gen 1 standards.
Bouffalant in particular intrigues me since it’s significantly bulkier than Tauros while having higher offenses but it is significantly slower. It’s also got swords dance which would make it super dangerous, but it very noticeably lacks Hyper Beam. I wonder if it would get pushed out of the meta by virtue of not being specialized one way or the other, or if it would be splashed in more places as a tech option
Chandelure and Darmanitan are really examples of ridiculous stats on otherwise balanced pokemon, and to be fair to Volcarona it was launched in a world where stealth rock was well established in singles and rock slide in doubles, so I can forgive the powercreep there. I really like Gen 5 fire types is mh point, I guess.
my favourite fire type is Iron Moth, I think. I am a big fan of the substitute + 3 attacks set with booster energy. I go for booster energy speed, which lets me invest some of my evs into physical defence I like tera fairy dazzling gleam, but energy ball and tera blast ground are also very good
Note: Moltres would actually be BETTER in Gen 1 if fire blast didn't have a 30% burn chance. Chansey and Starmie are going to be the most likely switch ins to that move and if they get burned they become almost unkillable, you really need a paralysis or freeze to make them manageable

Bummer, I thought I could get some insight on magmar. Im using one for gen 4 and feel lost building the the team
my favourite fire type is Iron Moth, I think. I am a big fan of the substitute + 3 attacks set with booster energy. I go for booster energy speed, which lets me invest some of my evs into physical defence
I like tera fairy dazzling gleam, but energy ball and tera blast ground are also very good
Note: Moltres would actually be BETTER in Gen 1 if fire blast didn't have a 30% burn chance. Chansey and Starmie are going to be the most likely switch ins to that move and if they get burned they become almost unkillable, you really need a paralysis or freeze to make them manageable
Its magma cargo monday (its friday)
