I love the exterior and interior design of this truck. I am however really over the dark grey interior plastics and leathers that GM clearly got on sale many years ago because you will find it in almost every one of their vehicles. You pay extra for an interior with color in it, and they only give you little bits and pieces of that color for the premium- surrounded by tons of haunted house grey.
The team who designed the canyon and Colorado are who should be designing the Silverado and Sierra. I can't believe how much better the interiors look on these trucks compared to their big bros. Contrasting colors with reds, browns and white. What a phenomenal job they have done.

At nearly 5,000 miles out of warranty the heater core blew and luckily the wife wasn't in the passenger seat or her legs would have been burnt badly by hot coolant. This was right around $3,000 out of pocket to fix which included replacing the carpet. A few months later - what do you know - back to the stealership. Few more months later the fuel system control module failed and needed to be replaced - another couple hundred to diagnose and repair. This was my third and likely last GMC. Again best looking truck on the road but I think their quality control has suffered. Their lack of quality control is basically subsidized by consumers when they push the extended warranties during the sale.
In Australia we're about to start receiving the new Ranger Raptor with a 292kW (a little under 400hp) 3.0L V6 Ecoboost so the competition is going to be very interesting.
I have a 2017 Canyon Denali. I always hated the stock rim and tire combo (I put ZR2 rims on mine). The tire upgrade on the new model is pleasing. Glad to see they also upgraded much of the interior to actual leather, noticeably the doors. My doors are almost all hard plastic. Makes me want a new one now but I like my BabyMax Denali too much
I really like the elevation of the "professional grade" midsize truck. This Denali really upgrades the entire midsize class to luxury status, and I believe GM was smart to offer such a truck since luxury and offroad trucks are very in demand right now. The interior is very nice, and WOW....I never thought GM would develop new turn signal stalks! REJOICE! The only downside i can see so far is moving so many things into the screen, the center console area being robbed of space by placing the 4WD and parking brake controls there instead of storage(small armrest storage doesn't make up for it), and of course, price. This trim will like be $50K+. As well as the AT4X. But this thing absolutely craps on the old Canyon. I really like the stance of it as well.
As someone who just purchased a brand new half ton loaded sierra in November, this new Canyon Denali is tempting me to get into one of those! They look like awesome little trucks!! But i really need the capabilites of a half ton so I'm disappointed to not get the towing numbers in this video, and the bed is pretty dang small relative to what i use them for.

I don't agree with the headlights control in the infotainment screen. I agree most times you leave them on auto, however lights are essential to safety and should have its own independent controls . They should also consider led lights on the step bar. We know that this truck will not see heavy off-road use, but it will see camping sites and tailgate and open country party sites
@@hellkitty1014 Indeed. truly I have not seen any real innovation with car interiors, especially with internal lighting. for example , all cars above the basic trim level should have cooled seats, this would make mor efficient use of the HVAC system. I was thinking about that, but with modern cars with the auto function you just leave them on auto. It actually causes more problems to have them on the stalk. I see cars all the time with no lights on because the driver sees the backlit gauges and thinks they are on. They accidentally bump it to off. But most cars the last 10-15 years have had backlit gauges all the time so it tricks people who aren't paying attention and that endangers all of us on the road. Leave it on auto.
@@tomm1109 The auto function for most modern cars is for low-light activation. I see more cars riding in the rain without headlights on. In situations like rain and sitting on a construction site facing another vehicle without blinding the opposite driver, having a switch is much quicker and less distracting than going through an infotainment menu to turn turn the lights on or off. You mention stalks but I can't recall a GM pickup truck that has had headlight controls on a stalk including the current and previous GMC Canyon. So accidental shut-off is not a concern for not having it on auto as the current version defaults to auto automatically. Leave the quick choice available.
@@RidingRoundsWithRoyalT on my 06 Dodge Magnum their is a setting to turn on the headlights automatically whenever the wipers are on. Maybe they incorporated that. Kinda skimped out there. And it needs auto deploy step rails, those just hang down way too low, and they don’t match the rest of the truck. Otherwise, I think it’s a home run!
They needed to carry heated seats and push button Lock/Unlock to the rear as well. If I'm paying over 50k for this truck I would hope to get that standard!!
Very good looking truck Tommy. Good idea to do away with the front air deflector. Makes it look taller. The turbo engine is good on the 1500. But perfect on the mid size. Question. Does the tailgate compartment lock when it's upright? Would hate to think anyone could just reach in and snag my equipment.
What a nice design. Definitely a truck to consider. I was considering the Tacoma, but looking at the new Canyon, it's a game changer. Thanks GMC!!! Owner 2000 GMC Sierra, still going strong 💪 237k miles
Do yourself a favor and keep your 2000 Sierra. It was built a LOT better than the vehicles(especially GM) of today. You're looking at $70K for this truck, has a 2.7 liter engine that will blow before yours does, light controls are in a menu in the infotainment which will cost thousands when that has a problem. Did I mention these vehicles are now ALWAYS online? It looks nice and has some nice features, no doubt. But a truck is supposed to be practical and reliable. Few are anymore. GM and Ford are should get renamed to Recall Motors. The only mid-size truck I'd touch brand new today is the Frontier. It's got new school in all the right places and old school left over in all the right places. The infotainment is quick and simple. It has a naturally aspirated engine which is powerful, sounds waaaaay better, great tranny, and an interior that is practical and will work. I have an 05 Yukon with probably the same motor and tranny as your Sierra. I will never get rid of it. In fact, I have started buying parts and fixing her back up to a beauty. Fun project and very satisfying. Lots of great memories and I know what I have with it. No surprises. Anyway, good luck to you no matter what you decide. Just my two cents.
IMO midsize trucks look sportier , handle better , easier to park, better for off roading . If you aren't into heavy hauling this is the perfect size. I would choose midsize over full size any time.
@@kennethdavid7365 even at $50k, I think it’d be a good value for what you get. $55k is starting to get well into half ton territory… you can get a well equipped Sierra for about $60k, so $55k for a fully loaded midsize with every option vs $60k for a decently well equipped half ton would be a toss up.
They need to drop the price to sell as many as possible because once the new Ford ranger and ranger raptor drop with the all aluminum body, 2.7 v6 and 10 speed transmission it's going to be game over for the rest of the pack
I really hope the new Ford ranger goes all aluminum body with 2.7 and coil suspension. That would be an incredible truck. Of course the price still needs to be reasonable.
I know, right? I've moved my lights out of auto a full zero times since I got a car with auto headlights in 2010. It would be heartbreaking to have to go to the screen never.
@@tim3172 I have had to turn my lights on multiple times. In fog and bright snow storms. They did not always turn on. Not to mention rain. Plus launching boats at night. In lighted parking lot. It is very nice to put the parking lights on. Instead of headlights. The person backing up next to me. Has trouble seeing with my lights shining into his mirrors. People have thanked me for doing that. They better make it easy to turn on and off in the screen.
Dang! Looks great, but I really needed the 6ft bed and the Duramax diesel for fuel economy and more stable towing. I'm sure that four banger will be great for power but here in $6.00/gal California we have to drive long distances to get to our sandbox and water, so a new fuel saving diesel would still be better for towing. So... The only benefit of being stuck behind liberal enemy lines here in CA is our EV charging infrastructure, so I will be keeping my F150 Lightening on order.
Have a canyon and a Cadillac right now and both are absolute garbage. They are both on their way for trade ins. The canyon is horrible the Cadillac is even worse it’s been in the shop over 150 days in the 2.5 years I’ve owned it. The canyon has been issue after issue as well. And dealing with GM has been disgusting
I love the interior and the hard controls except why in the world did they remove the hard controls for the lights into the touch screen? That's pretty inconvenient and a bad move imo.
It looks pretty good, but I dislike the color combination of the interior. Hopefully this will change on the production vehicles. PS: The leather on the seats is not pleated, but rather is quilted in a diamond pattern.
Curious what you would like more? GM has been doing jet black everything for far too long. It used to seem sporty, now it just seems low rent Uber special. You don't have to clean with all black.
This redesign is fantastic from the capable looking stance, excellent exterior looks, premium interior and very capable powertrain. Finally a midsize that doesn’t look like a rental and isn’t powered like a car! That I4 Turbo should be amazing here. Huge upgrade in terms of power plant IMO.
Looks like it should. Since people like myself are using these not only as tricks but family haulers, I wished they would do a more in-depth analysis of the back seat for baby seats and storage.. also I wished they would offer a barn door option for the back like on the Ridgeline.. this way you can access the bed with out breaking your back.. so far though looks amazing!!
Yes! I need to know if this fits three seats in the back. Yes, I know what causes babies… now, haha. Seriously though, it looks like it will and that would be the only thing holding me back. For another two years or so until the oldest gets out of his booster.
Absolutely love the look. However very disappointed to hear no baby max. I owned a Duramax Colorado for awhile before upgrading to a 2500. That engine was a beast. Great fuel mileage as well.

Wow! That interior is nicer than Sierra!
Wow nice upgrade. Great looking truck
I really like the mid-size trucks the problem with them tho is for the price you might as well just get a full size
@@PolishGator Wow! 70k thanks crazy. Thanks for the heads up. I need a truck to travel in so I might consider the Tacoma Crew Cab Sport
This is the sweetest Canyon yet. It's about time GMC
Love the huge front end grill and gmc lettering the control in actual screen kinda worrying since if that breaks off for whatever reason ….
nice truck, but if you look by the side the truck looks like tacoma and tundra to me, maybe im wrong , nice video thanks.
Still no power sliding rear window?
Edit: looks great minus the step bars
That's one thing I hate about my 2019 Canyon. The new one needs to be powered. My 2017 Sierra SLE had a power sliding rear.
Great looking truck. I would consider buying if it came with a long bed.
Nice job Toyota! I was waiting for their next gen Tacoma.
IMO midsize trucks look sportier , handle better , easier to park, better for off roading . If you aren't into heavy hauling this is the perfect size. I would choose midsize over full size any time.
Very impressive redesign. If this comes in around $45k, I may have to put it on my shortlist.
Add another $5000 to that.
@@kennethdavid7365 And another 10,000 to that lol
@@kennethdavid7365 even at $50k, I think it’d be a good value for what you get. $55k is starting to get well into half ton territory… you can get a well equipped Sierra for about $60k, so $55k for a fully loaded midsize with every option vs $60k for a decently well equipped half ton would be a toss up.
63k for AT4X Edition 1 so expect the regular AT4X to be high 50s and high 40s for regular AT4. Denali I bit it 60k.
Current gen Zr2 with the v6 costs $46k I’d expect around $56-58k with the inflation, new model and year+ Denali trim level.
does it come with the standard Gm exploding engine feature?
They need to drop the price to sell as many as possible because once the new Ford ranger and ranger raptor drop with the all aluminum body, 2.7 v6 and 10 speed transmission it's going to be game over for the rest of the pack
I really hope the new Ford ranger goes all aluminum body with 2.7 and coil suspension. That would be an incredible truck. Of course the price still needs to be reasonable.
The Ranger looked outdated when it came out. This trucks are getting pricey every year. Do we really need an extra $20k on top with a Raptor version.?
I highly doubt it !
Usually not a GM fan, but that thing is awesome!
Love everything BUT the light controls! That needs to have its own switch or knob
My buddy at work traded his 2017 v8 1500 Sierra for the newer 2.7 four-banger Sierra and he hates the new motor he wished he had kept his v8.
Good effort GM. I am patiently waiting on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. This truck just isn't giving.
You will be disappointed!
Love it, now I just need $100,000 to spend
Any idea of you can disengage the transfer case?
Gmc & Chevrolet have really been stepping it up so has Cadillac…. Keep it up 👍
Have a canyon and a Cadillac right now and both are absolute garbage. They are both on their way for trade ins. The canyon is horrible the Cadillac is even worse it’s been in the shop over 150 days in the 2.5 years I’ve owned it.
The canyon has been issue after issue as well.
And dealing with GM has been disgusting
@@JB-ok1xo you are a freakin liar!
@@JB-ok1xo sucks to be you. I have a Cadillac and Canyon and neither has spent a second in a shop.
Cadillac continues to have the worst looking vehicles in America.
@@jie80634 and you continue to be a loser!
I love the interior and the hard controls except why in the world did they remove the hard controls for the lights into the touch screen? That's pretty inconvenient and a bad move imo.
Still no power sliding rear window? That’s absolute insanity. My 2019 Tacoma has that!
the only thing missing is port injection so once you get to 100000 miles you won't have to remove the head to remove the carbon of the intake valve.
Love it but where is my diesel motor ??:(((
This redesign is fantastic from the capable looking stance, excellent exterior looks, premium interior and very capable powertrain.
The headlights look like the chevy HD trucks
Agreed, and that's not a good thing...
is it a lift if it is standard on everything? at that point only the at4x has the inch-ish lift
310 hp and 430 torque, puts it very close to the power output of the old 8.1 liter, and superior to the last of the 454s
NHTSA should make sure their safety test includes this model with the lift.
Its a nice truck , but too expensive.
Great looking exterior. They didn't go completely crazy work the chrome.
"GM flew me out here to review THEIR pickup"
I'm sure this review will be unbiased
Needs automatic side steps that tuck up. the permanent ones don't look good on there but rest of the truck looks great to me
Absolutely love the look. However very disappointed to hear no baby max. I owned a Duramax Colorado for awhile before upgrading to a 2500. That engine was a beast. Great fuel mileage as well.
