disappointing to be looking at the same mechanics we've been looking at for decades in W3/SC2. why not try something new? design away the need for hitpoint bars with highly visible unit damage condition? something
The mechs not being able to move through the trees is an amazing touch, also the artillery siege-tank doesn't hit instantly which seems like a really cool way to balance it!
@@minuteowl4421 it is probably deliberately slowed down so that you can actually see what is going on, this is a showcase demo after all and very much subject to change
@@FrostGiantStudios one more opinion from SC2 master league player - the way "tanks" in your game are now is good idea, but projectile has to be a little bit faster, otherwise it relies on opponent making a mistake, instead of being a useful, "solid" unit.
Look up the "Starcraft 2 Alpha" video from 10 years ago for comparison. I think they need for it to develop it's own identity. They're 1st priority is probably to just get a game functioning as a new team with the elements they already know.
Insanely hype. I love all of the additions that you guys have made from all of the RTSs that you've researched or worked on, just as you promised. I'm extremely excited to play it, and hope to get into the open beta!
Love the idea with forests in this game. Small units can pass trees - huge can't and that's simple and brilliant at the same time. The gameplay itself is very close to Starcraft... I think closer to Starcraft 1 than 2? At 2:45 it reminds me Protoss Reaver play from SC1. Wish to see more. At the moment I'm sure I will have to play this game for looong hours :)
From the video, it's clear that Frost Giant's all-star RTS team is leveraging their collective expertise to build a compelling game in Stormgate. The visuals might still be in the refining stage, but the core gameplay shines, promising a fresh and intriguing addition to the RTS genre. Exciting times ahead!
Looks really good for a pre alpha!! I have trust in frost giant and im excited to see it released, even if it isnt the insanely high expectation that the community has
This looks amazing! I just read in the description that we'll have an editor as well as support for mods and custom campaigns! So great!.. Wonder if mechs can jump down cliffs that regular units cannot.. That would be awesome.. Tho I've just seen they can crush trees with the ability.. If all the races have similar tools, then it's pretty interesting.. I love the dropship micro and to be honest, this looks sick to be just a Pre-Alpha of the game
I love how it feels exactly like a mix of wc3 and sc2. Wc3 is too slow for some people but sc2 too fast and hectic. This looks like the perfect sweet spot in between, amazing!
I want to give feedback from an interview that Monk did with 'Back2Warcraft'. During this interview Monk spoke about 'Creeps' and their purpose. These purpose include, dropping Luminite and Therium; a beneficial structure for whichever side is standing next to it (eg. healing wells in WC3 and Xelnaga towers in SC2); and game buffs (eg. Temporary faster worker production). Monk mentioned that the over arching purpose of these creep is to encourage players to move around the map. He mentioned that these are good motivators for such action. I am not sold on the idea of receiving a beneficial building (if this ends up being the case), nor am I sold on the idea of players receiving buffs. The buffs were explained as possible 'comeback' mechanics. I am okay with creeps dropping resources because these resources can be spent through proper decision making. But having a buff that you chase after when you are behind seems unfair to the opponent who played their game well. If you have made mistakes that sees you getting obliterated, then you should be obliterated. One of your goals is to foster e-sports, having 'catch up' mechanics does not force players to get better. Instead of players reviewing their replays and trying to optimise their build (as Day9 taught us), they'll try to kill a creep to get a 'clutch' benefit. This is not an e-sport I would want to watch. SC and WC endured as e-sports because they forced you to improve every aspect of your game. Tournaments generally have 3, 5 and 7 games to ensure that when pro players make bad decisions, they at least have a chance to redeem themselves in the next game. Catch up mechanics negate this fun aspect of e-sports. Also, while these 'buffs' were being discussed, the host countered Monk by saying that a good player could get a hold of these mechanics for themselves seeing as they are ahead and probably have map control. But Monk countered back by saying that they would leave their base unguarded while doing so, hence allowing for the player who is behind to attack their base. This makes no sense to me because a good player isn't sending their entire army to kill 2-3 creeps. Their base will always be defended. Bad players should get their butts handed to them so they can learn from it. Please re-consider including any mechanic designed give a player a chance of coming back after making bad decisions. I apologise if I ranted. Congratulations on an amazing showing. The game looks like it's in a very good state given that it's in pre-alpha.
Have you guys taken a look at the 90s RTS Submarine Titans? I think they were cool ideas in that game that might help you innovate and revitalize the genre. Keep up the good work.
I know it's only pre alpha but it looks so good already, can't wait to try it out! I really like how the 'marine' has a single shot which distinguishes it from the vulcan machine gun. The vulcans look like they are a lot of fun to micro
Looks really great. Love the clarity. My excitement is renewed after seeing this. Hoping spell-casting micro isn’t too extreme, and I’m glad there aren’t hero units. In LotV, there was too much spellcasting. I’d love decision-making and macro to be more important in Stormgate. I’m happy the game isn’t too cartoony. Thank you Frost Giant
When I was 9, my dad got us the Starcraft Battle Chest from Fry's. It was probably the single most important gaming moment of my life. When I discovered the UMS maps on Starcraft, a whole universe was revealed to me--I felt the boundless depth of human creativity. Tower Defense, Auto Chess, WoW, MOBAs, eSports, Diablo, Town of Salem, Among Us, few people realize just how much Starcraft played a role in their inception, or what that game has contributed to game development as a whole. What made Starcraft so influential wasn't just its surface-level gameplay but its relentless dedication to good UI and accessibility; units with big colors and clear sillhouettes, snappy movement and animations, intuitive unit pathing and controls, hotkeys, and above all StarEdit, which made game modding so simple that even little 9-year old me was inspired to try making games. When I heard that accessibility was one of the biggest priorities for Stormgate, I knew that Frost Giant had the right idea. I'll be looking forward to this game like no other.
This is exactly what I was hoping for. I can really feel both WC3 and SC2 yet also something new. I haven't been this excited for a game in many, many years. Can't wait to jump in and play!
Also, seeing TLO back with what seems like the equivalent of Marines warms my heart. In the beginning of WoL when he still played Terran he was my favorite player to watch.

That looks like a cool combination of Warcraft and Starcraft in one game, I'm digging it!.. Excited to see the second race, if we actually get to play the Demons, I would 100% main that race.
from what I have heard, the humans will be the most tanky race, so what we saw in the gameplay was like a zealot flood vs terran mech. as a tanky race, you should relay on constant dps to function, so the demons could be the magicians (utility oriented unreliable bursts, aka, what makes protoss suck for everyone xD) or the swarm (numbers oriented skirmishers, frail high dps). I think that they could be the former as they look a lot like the demons of wc3
So excited to see this! Looks fun! I got to the SC2 party very late but enjoy it thoroughly! I think one of the biggest reasons for SC2's downfall was their lack of cosmetics and social capabilities (spectating games, powerful and fun lobby system, emblem/profile design, etc etc...). The game looks solid and I believe the key to Stormgates success (aside from good gameplay and balance) would be to give the players other reasons to play more like unlocking skins, medals for bragging rights, ability to socialize, etc etc. Basically stormgate + all of what Dota 2 offers aside from gameplay = a legendary game!
I am a UA-camr who uploads videos related to Starcraft. I'm producing StarCraft content that gamers create. Blizzard used to be the dream company of my heart, but now it's hard to find the glory of the past as a person grows older. But the glory is right here! I support your passion.
For pre-alpha, this looks like a great starting point. The artists have clearly been working overtime here (probably not literally, but maybe they really have) to put this all together in a relatively short amount of time. One of the best pre-alphas I have seen. Honestly, my largest complaint is how dark the shadows are, which is very easy to tweak in-engine! They are currently very distracting. The ambient light level is quite low in general. I am personally not a fan of soft-shadows but I feel like it does 'technically' fit the art style better. Another critique is the unit rotation being very snappy instead of smooth when walking between points in their path. The graphics of each unit should be smoothly, yet quickly, rotated towards the actual unit direction. This affects game feel pretty heavily. One final critique is that the UI is very tall considering it's right in the center of the screen. I would not be afraid to copy other games here by filling up that empty space on the bottom left and right, allowing the center to be a bit lower. On a similar note, that game is a bit zoomed in. Comparing it to some other games, it does seem like the actual zoom level matches, so maybe it is the size of the buildings being a bit bigger than other games that makes it seem zoomed in. Either way, this is all minor stuff that will get fixed when you guys have the time to enter "QOL" mode. Like I said, this is looking great for a pre-alpha. I can't speak much about the gameplay itself because it's all just a bunch of numbers that are subject to change. At a surface level, it seems good so far. Really need a hands-on experience to formulate opinions on it. I look forward to all the strategies and metas the community will come up with when this is released. Would love to see this game evolve with its players.
Not a deal breaker, but I'm not particularly fond of the artstyle. I will still play the shit out of it if it's a good RTS with solid mechanics though. :D
Oh hell yea it looks closer to WC3 speeds rather than SC2 speeds. I do like the cartoony aesthetics, I think the biggest issue aesthetically so far for me was the lighting but it’s pre-alpha so I’m confident it’ll be better by the time we can get hands on. Great stuff frost giant
"WC3 speeds rather than SC2 speeds" Why? It's a damn fast game and units dies in a second. WC3 speed is literally units with 800 hp punching for 30 dmg that takes a minute to kill someone
Really looking great. Exceeded my expectations. I can't wait for more reveals. However, this particular game didn't look totally earned as TLO spammed space marines and Monk was trying for something flashy and techy. Marines OP :D
Warcraft map + Starcraft units = take my money; Looking forward to this one! (btw as far as I know the core group of devs are actually some of the Warcraft III/Starcraft II original devs and I love so much what they're doing)
I know there are a whole lot of opinions, and styles change over time, but I really miss the brood war look. It was just so sharp and rugged and just realistic looking enough that you could suspend your disbelief and really feel like you were commanding a massive space army with that foreboding yet epic soundtrack in the background. Even though its over 20 years old it still looks good and feels genuinely timeless. This looks a lot more cartoony, which I know is the more modern approach but it just makes me think of clash of clans or something. I do think the emphasis on guerilla style warfare is really cool and can see a lot of care being put into unit design
Wow! This looks amazing! Micro, and environmental impacts can be seen. Each update I am more and more excited. Fantastic work! It is cool to see the RTS community rallying behind this game. Thank you!!!
I think this will be a competent and worthwile game, but I don't get the feeling that it will be a revolution. And it doesn't need to be. If it's good enough to convert my MOBA friends into RTS players, it will surpass my every expectation. But no matter what happens, I am so glad that you guys put your effort in this game.
0 chance, you can thank Blizzard for that though. Back when SC2 was king of esports they failed on marketing and let League take over the show. After Blizzards horrible balancing killed RTS for good it allowed games like League to ruin the industry.
@@Swad-cf8nc lol oh God, blizzard had nothing to do with the moba genre far surpassing rts games in playerbase. Hell, the most played modes in rts games tend to be moba modes. Playing with a team you can blame while only having to micro a single character is just far more approachable for the general market.
Looks great so far. Only thing that actually bothers me a bit is the (supply) structures just getting slapped down with no obvious reason, since they mentioned base building beeing important i imagined them beeing more important like moon wells in wc3. But who knows maybe they just didnt show that here.
As a casual SC2 player who doesnt have much time to practice mechanics endlessly, I really appreciate the slower speed and more space for micro. Units seem to have more positional abilities and move less efficiently than in sc2 which gives you time to respond. This is perfect speed imho for casuals like me.
The fact that they're this far along in a pre-alpha is a great sign. No clear bugs, nice textures, units are unique and maintain visual clarity. There are high-level skill based mechanics like dropship micro. Defensive tools like speedbuild which make rushes less annoying to play against. Time to kill way faster and more exciting than WC3 without being as punishing as SC2. Units aren't overdesigned in that they seem to only have 1 or 2 abilities that are effective but not broken. The scout can see enemies a little beyond fog of war, small dash and stun that you research on the gatling gun mech guys. Sooooo much potential here, remember how much was missing from sc2 alpha.
The Frost Giant has awakened. It’s been a long time coming. Thank you guys for all your hard work and dedication to giving RTS fans the game we have been waiting for. I can’t wait !
I apologize, but personally I am a little disappointed. Maybe because there was so much hype, or my expectations... Everything feels incredibly secondary. The graphics are like a mobile game, the construction art looks like Warhammer, the units look like Starcraft, the environment is from Warcraft. Everything is very disjointed. QWERTY grid, I hope, turns off, and the idea of a gold mine (i.e. mineral mine) for 12 workers - who came up with that? It looks too crowded. We can only hope that game mechanically this game will be great, and after a couple of years of updates and new races (at release, if I understand correctly, there will only be 2) - the game will be able to surprise. The first impression is depressing.
I saw the harstem vid and I looked at the comment section and thought "Wow people are actually being honest instead of fake nice for once. Thats a change. At least they are getting some good feedback." Then I realized I wasnt on the proper vid so I came here and as expected the comment section is just a bunch of suckups pretending this doesnt just look like a crappy budget version of a game that came out over a decade ago.
Thank you so much for watching and for supporting Stormgate! We can't wait to get the game in your hands!
Good job guys, art style and gameplay speed feels fantastic. The real spiritual successor to both wc3 and sc2. Wonderful!

Amazing looking new RTS! Can't wait for the final product
Not a deal breaker, but I'm not particularly fond of the artstyle. I will still play the shit out of it if it's a good RTS with solid mechanics though. :D
I feel the same, but after the reveal they will have to me convince me even more with gameplay, 'cause I didn't like the art style at all.
I cant wait to learn and cast this game
Oh hell yea it looks closer to WC3 speeds rather than SC2 speeds. I do like the cartoony aesthetics, I think the biggest issue aesthetically so far for me was the lighting but it’s pre-alpha so I’m confident it’ll be better by the time we can get hands on. Great stuff frost giant
Same. Lights a bit too bright on buildings and projectiles.
"WC3 speeds rather than SC2 speeds"
Why? It's a damn fast game and units dies in a second. WC3 speed is literally units with 800 hp punching for 30 dmg that takes a minute to kill someone
@@Olagfigh because I’m an old man and am hardcapped by my reaction time, not losing the fight as soon as I see it is better for me.
@@jakesandman8409 lol, so I have to be older than you cause I see here SC2 speed and units dies in the blink of an eye :P
Thanks for keeping RTS alive! hope its success fuels more RTS games to appear in the future
Playing with a team you can blame while only having to micro a single character is just far more approachable for the general market.
wow i love the fighting sounds and animations
Loved it! Love to see TLO
Love to see a full game of stormgate so we can get a feel of the pacing of the game.
Looks great so far. Only thing that actually bothers me a bit is the (supply) structures just getting slapped down with no obvious reason, since they mentioned base building beeing important i imagined them beeing more important like moon wells in wc3. But who knows maybe they just didnt show that here.
They have mentioned that the supply buildings for other races will most likely be more involved
this looks incredibly promising!
Not sure of the unit designs. This sc and wc mix looks weird. Very silly sometimes. The game engine though looks amazing
Looks sick! Keep up the good work guys!
Watching it at 1.25 speed made it feel better. I hope that the actual gamespeed for competitive play is default a little faster.
no
big no
As a casual SC2 player who doesnt have much time to practice mechanics endlessly, I really appreciate the slower speed and more space for micro. Units seem to have more positional abilities and move less efficiently than in sc2 which gives you time to respond. This is perfect speed imho for casuals like me.
Looking Great!
They also could've just called it a pre-alpha when in fact it's more advanced than that.
The Frost Giant has awakened. It’s been a long time coming. Thank you guys for all your hard work and dedication to giving RTS fans the game we have been waiting for. I can’t wait !
looks really great for pre-alpha
Yes, for a pre-alpha mobile game.
Looks more like warcraft than starcraft but regardless I approve !
looking forward to this !
Did they actually say that there will only be 2 races at launch? In that case it is really DoA.
@@HasekuraIsuna Not now, they said it one year ago, mb something changed.
@@vegatv5474 I really hope they launch it with 4.
Looking forward to it, looks like the type of game I enjoy!
I saw the harstem vid and I looked at the comment section and thought "Wow people are actually being honest instead of fake nice for once. Thats a change. At least they are getting some good feedback." Then I realized I wasnt on the proper vid so I came here and as expected the comment section is just a bunch of suckups pretending this doesnt just look like a crappy budget version of a game that came out over a decade ago.
nice toxic feedback you should buy a mirror VERY constructive.
@@XJ9LoL its called honest feedback, its a lot more useful than hearing some brony tell them what a great job they are doing
