LOL The hilarious part of this scene is how similar to this is how similar this is to what actually happened (except Haskins convinced and won over Flournoy himself, not his mom)! Here's how Ray Sanchez described it in his book, "Basketball's Greatest Upset":
"WHEN HARRY Flournoy Jr. was walking home from Emerson High School in Gary, Indiana, one day he noticed a car moving slowly on the street alongside him. Flournoy kept walking and the car just kept moving alongside him. Flournoy glanced over and saw the man wave. Flournoy tried to ignore him.
Finally, Flournoy reached his house. The stranger parked and out of the car stepped…Don Haskins.
Texas Western’s basketball coach wasn’t about to let his man get away. Haskins introduced himself to Flournoy and wrangled an invitation into the house. He had been touted on Flournoy by a former schoolmate of Haskins at Oklahoma State, Jack Hobbs, who had been impressed with Flournoy’s rebounding ability.
HASKINS SAT and spoke at length about the advantages of coming to Texas Western College. It was a small school. Flournoy would get to play a lot. The school needed a good rebounder. El Paso was a good city. Texas Western was a fine college. Haskins threw in all the usual persuasive arguments that coaches use.
It impressed the young high school senior but what finally convinced him that he might like to play for Haskins was the way Haskins treated his mother, Amy. ‘My mother asked him if he’d like some apple pie,’ Flournoy said. ‘He said yes. He sat there and ate a big serving then told my mother what a great pie it was. I liked that a lot.’
On such a little detail is big game sometimes caught, and Flournoy turned out to be a huge catch for the Miners.”

And similar to what we see in the movie, Haskins actually did scare him into getting his grades up by bringing his mother to El Paso.

Not as funny as when Haskins brought Harry’s mom to El Paso to scare him into getting his grades up. In real life, she probably didn’t sit in his classes, but Harry did get called to Haskins’ office and standing there was his mother.

Mama seemed a little adversarial towards her son here. Would have rubbed me the wrong way that she just trusted this guy so easily and sorta treated me like I was invisible while talking about my future like I have no say so in the matter.

Yeah a scholarship to play D1 basketball for nothing, or you acting like a punk. Lol, obviously he was in a position to help him, you can’t make up a university and a scholarship, bishop sycamore wasn’t around back then

@@Igoruhandchu Maybe he didn't want his help. and those scholarships can be taken away at any time. Guys like the coach look at these inner city kids like glorified race horses. As long as they can run they have value. If they can't they're shit. I wouldn't have trusted this guy I don't care what he was offering. Meet the guy somewhere else. Don't got to let him in the house and then stare at me crazy when I walk in.

@@robinabernathy2829 wow your sound so stubborn you’d obviously hold yourself back in any aspect of life. “Hey here’s a free basketball scholarship we’d love to have you”
“Nah can’t do it why would you come to my house weirdo” lol clearly he coveted the mans skills and wanted to offer him something. I can tell by how you talk no ones ever desired any of your skills. Sad. You sound like a loser.

@@Igoruhandchu No you're the one who sounds like a loser. The message in this movie is the same as has been done before over and over. White guy comes in and saves the black inner city kid from a life of poverty right? And the scholarship ain't free. If these guys couldn't perform they would be sent packing. They have little to no power when it comes to this. If some random white dude came showing up to your door during the time period this happened saying he's a college recruiter would you just let him in because he's dressed well? You don't know who the hell this guy could be. You could have at least called the school to confirm who he was first. And I'm going to assume momma didn't do that. And my skills so to speak can be used to make money for myself. I don't have to hope that someone chooses me to make money.
