Love this. I spent from 14 to 24 learning filmmaking, taking shitty background jobs, being treated like a nobody. 10 years later we are producing our adventure travel series that focuses on me & my film partners journeys to some of the most beautiful and bizarre places around the world. I grew up middle class. Became poor because of a bunch of bullshit. I nearly killed myself 3 times as a result of a shitty childhood. If I can get there - so can you. But he's right. You have to be ready to drown for it. It sucked being broke and not making money back on small non union gigs. It sucked getting shunned by my bullshit agent because she plays favorites. But guess what. I'm still here bitch. And I am still at it. Come at me
Film Courage, and our best to you as well. Fantastic channel, I have been subbed for a while and often recommend this channel to up and comers. You all provide a wonderful insight & encouragement for rising filmmakers.

@Vladimir Peter I was talking about people who tried to make it big too soon or try to be an overnight success, instead of building their skills. Not everyone in Hollywood or the entertainment industry in general is gonna have a pretty face and a mansion in Beverly Hills or start as a child actor or start as a singer or a role model. There’s people who went to film school, there’s people who did stand up in their 20’s in local clubs, there’s late bloomers like Harrison Ford who worked as a carpenter before getting lucky with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. And then there’s actors who did theater, etc. That’s what I mean when I say there’s no right or wrong way to break into entertainment.
Wow....The young shall indeed grow....i watched this man on the screen first time with my dad of blessed memory when i was 12 years and guess my age now writing this oh from the movie"COMMANDO "and still listening to words of wisdom from him. The Legend lives on, live long Duke and God bless you !!
I never made it past a back ground Actor! I would love to go back!! Try it one more time!!' My name is Patience Okewegbe a Nigerian who have worked in Films and Television in USA!!!! I just stopped trying!!!!! I just came across your channel then got hooked.
Jay Bull I'm working on two novels right now, for one I'm writing the first draft and for the other it's being rewritten start to finish. Making a little bit of progress every day.
@@joshliam1967 Keep at it! I'm a writer myself and you've got to keep going. Look up a couple of quotes from Robert Heinlein about writers, (one in particular is funny but accurate). Accept the fact that you're going to be brutally critiqued and rejected, (many, many times), that people who don't get what you're doing are going to either dismiss it and/or think you're foolish, that you're going to run into problems, that you need to continually improve your writing skills and increase your knowledge about the business we're in, (and let's face it, it's ultimately a business) but most of all, that you're going to be riddled with angst and doubt about yourself. It will be necessary to take a break from writing for a while from time to time so you can come back to your work with fresh eyes. Keep your struggle in perspective, (just like Mr. Bill Duke said), but never, ever give up your quest. Best of luck to you and remember; never EVER give up!
Bill been deep, since the day of playing detective on menace to society. That act was so damn original... "you know you done fked up right" (chuckle) "you know you done fked up, right...." so- you- said, you bought the bottle of beer at 12. "you know you done fked up, don't you?"( light laugh)
That's JAMAICA emblazoned across Mr. Duke's chest ? 'To the world' Sir. One Love n Respect due. Everyday phrases used in my country of birth, Jamaica. Rich lessons of life. Thank you.
This man is tha truth. All day. I remember when I 1st saw him in the movie predator and he wasn't super big and muscular like Arnold or Carl Weathers or Jesse the body Ventura or the giant Native American fellow sonny Landham. He was just intense incredible energy great timing he knew how to interact With the entire cast in his own way that made him stand out I remember looking at the movie and I was like this dude is tha shit.
3:38 Probably I wouldn't. I'd more than likely just lie there waiting for enough people walk over the pieces until they become too small to hold consciousness and I can just get carried away as thoughtless dust when the wind breezes through.

I’m a talent rep and do research. It takes 15-20 years avg for actors to get their big job.....well the 10 out of 100k that get a big job at least. 90% of stars are coming from well to do families, relationships with production or the top agencies. It’s like partnerships in Law firms: First, to get into big Law you need to be at a top law school and then be in the top 10% of your class. Do others make it differently? Yes. But expect a minimum of 15-20yrs. if you’re lucky.
Okay I just saw a few seconds before Bill started speaking in this particular video when I look at the last video and the first I knew if you met this man in person and started giving him excuses about that is hard to get on in life he can look at you like you full of stuff he's going to be hard on you because of what he had to go through and how he made it you can tell him to speech even when you first meet him I bet you he's about no foolishness and I don't say that about everybody I say that to the very few the man is the actor director never met him before but if anybody can see what I see what I say even actors you can see the true self even if they're acting is coming hard to explain

"Dreams without a plan is called frustration." Brilliant. The Bible says, "A dream deferred makes the heart sick."
Don't compare yourself to other celebrities or movie stars. In the end, there is no right or wrong way to break into the entertainment industry.
stay away.

My thoughts exactly
I really admire his style of speech and story telling. He’s a master of his craft.
