By far the best companion departure was Jo Grant. You really felt like the Doctor was emotionally crushed. It was a very well done departure, dramatically.

I love the contrast with the ones like Barbara, Romana, and virtually all the men (bar Jamie) where they hilariously disliked each other at first but then ended up being hugely trusted friends/comerades by the time of their parting.

Not necessarily. Time travel is a tricky thing. He may have been first introduced to her as a future companion by watching himself at the trial, he didn't meet her formally at that point. The actual point where they met has never been shown on television.
