  • @kenclark3953

Been doing that for years. I'd add one step - you do want the free end to be shorter than the hook end, but not by more than a few inches. You'll save yourself several wraps (bit of time) by making them almost the same length. (Edit: because he made it look *really* easy, and it usually is, but when you fumble the thing, you'll wish you had fewer turns to get it right!) But the best part of this is the beginning 'undo the locked strap'. Learned a long time ago the best way to use a ratchet strap is to start with the strap loose, pull the free end to take up the slack, *then* use the ratchet.

I'm the only person I know who likes to separate the winch from the strap completely when storing.
I find that it makes it more convenient for putting straps on a load as well

    • @duncdunc76
      @duncdunc76 2 дні тому +2

Your not the only one. I store mine separately as well as I also find it faster in my use cases. I use 14' by 1" straps most of the time and I take the strap end and just wind it around my elbow and hand like wrapping an extension cord. I then fold the wrap in half and stick it in one of the bins in a Dewalt screw organizer that I've designated as my strap case. Then I place the ratchet on top of the strap. It's been a great way to store rachet straps for me over the years. Each strap has its own bin so it doesn't get tangled and the organizer holds 6 straps plus 2 extra bins for bungee cords. Whenever I need to strap something I've got a nice compact kit. And if ya ever need more straps you can stack organizers and lock them together as well.

Yeah, definitely a few guys in the comments who share your sentiment. That’d be a nightmare for me because I have enough trouble keeping track of my straps as it is. Plus if I know I just need two and only want to bring two along I can just grab and go. Sounds like a great method as a base station of straps though!

    • @NickKamin

I use the same method but I place a magic marker line on the tail of the strap so I can get the perfect twirl length every time. I align the mark at the twisting barrel and then ratchet until the barrel is full. Then I wrap the excess just as you do and the hook always winds up just right after wrapping. Easy-peasy

  • @R.B.

I use a different system but might give this a try. One thing which I do is I align the hooks on opposite sides of the rachet, in opposite directions. Then I wrap the free end around the ratchet while adding a twist. Once I've worked my way around, especially if my straps are longer, I fold them back over so they meet on the other side. Continue to wrap and twist. When you get to the end, you tuck the free end under another wrap and tug to secure. The nice thing about this is that the hooks can now hook onto just about anything and they can hang. The hooks facing in opposition make it harder for the bundle to fall on their own, and they stay tied off. The reason for the twist is when you are uncoilling. Instead of getting a twisted mess, the strap will actually untwist so that they aren't twisted, all without falling to the ground. I like how you used the hook to hold, so I'll have to see if there's a way to combine some of these ideas.

I use mine so much that I do not bother to wrap them up I just dump them in a pile in my truck tool box. I will at least put the ratchets on one side and the straps on the other but thats about all the organization needed for ratchet straps! This looks like someone with some kind of OCD or control issues lol but it is for sure a neat and tidy way to store them if you have all that time to spend each time you use them.

Keep them lubed with a wd40 or other as the operate SOOOOOO much better and bind up less.
And try to avoid dropping them on hard surfaces as it knocks them out of whack and you have to repair or toss them.

I'm going home from work now and I'm going to try this with my bag of spaghetti I call my ratchet strap bag.

I have these EXACT straps, been doing this method for years. Also some I have a Velcro band around them. Drives me nuts when one of the kids uses them and just wads them up.

I used the Velcro bands for years and moved onto this method. In my case my father is the culprit of the ratchet wads!

If the hook hangs off the end,try leaving the ratchet in the release position and see if that works before burying it in your backyard. I find doing it that way usually works better anyhow as it doesn’t take as many wraps to stow it.

That's a clever thought! I'll have to give that a try for my straps on the naughty list.

Yeah.. I wouldn’t bury mine either. I’m too cheap and… strapped to buy more..

Try doing this with a 2" or 4" trucker rated strap.

If I figure out a clever solution for the big ones I’ll certainly make a video about it. I’ve got a few and just wrap them up and call it a day. Fortunately they don’t tangle so easily.
