The following is previously unseen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution from the summer of 1984. It was in this very room at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota that Prince created and committed to tape one of his most beloved and iconic compositions, which six years later would become a worldwide hit for Sinead O’Connor. Prince’s original studio version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" is presented here for the first time.
Video directed by Andrea Gelardin and Ruth Hogben.

Deree Smith I agree! Stilettos at that!
Deree Smith I can't even walk in them! He does the splits too. I hate that his voice has been silenced

Deree Smith Fire for sure i need lessons.. replaying this over and over 👠👠👠👠
Prince is the only man that can dance in heels and still take your girl!!
Real talk
And dress all in purple and have a little bit of make up on too lol. I tell that to my mom all the time lol
Danielle LaCroix and jump so high on it (5 inches heels)
Absolutely 💜😉
No mention of the ass-less chaps?
I grew up only a couple of miles from Prince's stomping grounds. I had numerous encounters with him as it was inevitable in the relatively small town of Chanhassen. He watched me pitch a little league game from underneath a tree at Lake Ann park near his home. I delivered pizzas to his house and to his studio numerous times when I was in high school. I was witness to his intimate late night impromptu shows at Paisley Park more times than I can count on two hands. Anyone who might suggest that he isn't the greatest live performer of all time simply hasn't seen him in concert.

Prince, has one of the most amazing vocal ranges in history, 6 octaves. He wrote so many famous songs and just gave many of them away. Played appropriately 27 instruments. Known for his intellect and talent. A true legend.
'intellect'?
RIP Prince & Sinead. You were part of the soundtrack of a nice time of our lifes, Thank You so much! We're all getting old slowly but inexorably...
RIP for sure... I don't know why but losing Sinead today and the reminder of losing Prince (the day the music died if you ask me)... really makes me so sad. Definitely the nice times of our lives... Miss them all, MJ, George Michaels, Prince and now her
Absolutely true what you both say. Losing icons from our own generation, it makes you feel miserable.
So sad ❤️
Sinead O'Connor is not dead 🤷
@@matthewstevenson3002check the news out....
It's my personal opinion that Prince was likely the most complete rock star we've ever had the pleasure of listening to and be entertained by -- he was an elite-level singer, songwriter, instrumentalist (of multiple instruments), composer, producer, lyricist, dancer, performer, choreographer, and showman.
A very few in the history of late 20th and early 21st Century western pop music (all genres from rock, R&B, C&W, soul, hard rock, metal, and so on) can claim to score straight-A's on all of those categories -- Prince is one of those few and may, in fact, be the only one who can.
he is my favourite musician/artist of all time. He was the total package!
I love Prince..am not typical fan am 89 yr old lady..just sorry i never saw him in person...have spent many hours on utube enjoying PRINCE...RIP???

It's wonderful to see Prince with all that youthful energy. Thank you Prince - nothing compares to you.
Kind of what I was thinking lol I felt like it's ironic as I was listening.
Glad the woman beater junkie is in hell the whole 4 feet of him
Nothing compares to Prince. Incredible.
He could dance, and I was a professional ballet dancer, "Sigh, I understand his pain."
There will NEVER be ANOTHER LIKE PRINCE 💜0(+>💜
Only a handful of musicians can write multiple hit singles.
Only a handful of musicians can play flawless lead guitar.
Only a handful of musicians have an octave range of G1 to G7.
Only a handful of musicians can move like an acrobat.
VERY few musicians can do any of these things WELL.
Prince did them all... At. The. Same. Time.
His genius is unequaled.
While wearing heels! That’s Prince for you. Only Prince, no one else.
Well said, G Wilson. Well said. #RIP
Don't forget the producing, arranging, and playing all the other instruments, too!
and got so high it kilt him... damn it~
Calvin Cheney - Actually, that’s the downside of acrobatics on heels. He was on those painkillers because of chronic pain, particularly in his hips. The man could not move without excruciating agony.
His OD was because he was given a counterfeit prescription that was mixed with fentanyl, an opioid 30 to 50 times stronger than heroin. The man didn’t have a chance.
Prince, he was born to do exactly what he did. And man, didn't he do it well?
Jasper Johnson yes. Yes he did!
Yes! And That's why he is an ICON...!!!...
word brother!!
he did it better than anyone yet to come , or anyone in the future,,nothing compares to him,,ever,
Oh he passed with flying colors, God knows❤❤❤
One of the greatest songwriters/artists of all time
So true respect from England
Don't forget composer, producer..
The best
This makes me cry. I dont care what anyone says, Prince was such a rarity. I still cry over his loss. He understood more than people realised. It wasnt just as a black man, but so much more. He seen his mother abused, he'd been abused, felt like an outsider to his own race at times and his own sexuality. To me as a part Native American woman whom always have felt as an outsider to all parts of herself, Prince helped me to accept my uniqueness. To embrace my ownself and be open and acceptining of love and friendship. I will forever mourn such a amazing human being. He was a person for all people
well said maria, i wish you well.
He is among the likes of Mozart, da Vinci, & Einstein with his special genius. I will mourn him until the day I die...
What has his colour got to do with it!!!! Don’t draw him into the race argument!!!!!!
Boy Jules oh shut up! How many black men wore heels and makeup and were comfortable with being that way and straight especially back then? You are reaching!!!!
His loss hit alot of people hard. He was one of a kind, and irreplaceable. Prince is who inspired my love of music. Thanos to my mom I have loved Princes music since I heard his Purple Rain album. RIP💜💜
That footwork, those smiles, his playfulness, his unending drive to give us the best of him, we will carry this forward. This was Prince. 💜💜💜
And to think this video is of a REHEARSAL!!! Now it is even .more evident why his actual love shows were so damn energetic... The man didn't know how NOT to be a fully energized entertainer be it before hundreds of thousands of people or just practicing with his band! Love forever to arguably the best all out entertainer that I have ever known in my 40+ years in Earth. Singer, song writer, dancer, performer, influencer, mentor, and philanthropist ... 1 year gone and missed like we were related. 😪
*live, not love. Damn autocorrect!!
Wish I had been there too to sing and dance with him whilst he created magic. Thank you always Prince, rest in peace xxx
Superb
RIP Sinead O'Connor...Thank you Prince for writing this timeless classic...RIP 💔
Prince attempted to assault her (physically, not sexually) during a meeting because of something he didn't like about it. But you think some 5 foot 1 American geezer is going to get the best of a anybody who grew up in Ireland during the troubles? Not a chance. Doesn't sound like he was the best person ever. Sinead was a gem though, a beautiful soul with more troubles than Ireland, maybe she finally be at peace
@@leighlowe1069Ah she didn’t really grow up through the troubles living in the south.
@@leighlowe1069 As @brian5307 wrote, she was born and raised in and near Dublin in the south, so she didn't grow up in the Troubles, though she had a tough childhood. You should read her biography.
Eh, Uncle Fester didn't do this song justice
Haha yes Prince was average at best lol@@leighlowe1069
Prince wrote this song and performs it brilliantly.
Sinead covered it beautifully too.
Bless them both... 😢
Prince never released it, therefore Sinead O'connor's version is not a cover. During an interview, Prince expressed that Sinead's version is the Definitive version.
@victoraa8682 Prince wrote it and performs it on this video you've commented on... 🤦🏻♂️
@@Nezzer57yes but it was never released, so it basically ended up being a song performed by Sinead, written by Prince, she didn't cover it!
@VillaDan Doesn't have to be released to be covered.
Prince recorded the version you're listening to in 1984, Sinead covered it, amazingly well, in 1990.
Tbh, the best version of this song anyway, is by Chris Cornell in 2015, for Lithium. Well worth downloading from here 👍

Epiphany73 Well said.
Two year anniversary.
Epiphany 73 you are 100% right..
Folks I will say it again, you have it reversed, Prince is not covering this song, Prince wrote Nothing Compares 2 U in 1984, Sinead did her cover version in 1990. Here are some other songs you may not be aware of that Prince wrote, and either gave away, or that were covered by other artists. The list is huge, these are just a few. Manic Monday covered by the Bangles, this song was originally recorded as a duet with Apollonia, and some of the music/backup vocals by Brenda Bennet are still in place on The Bangles released version. I Feel For You covered by Chaka Khan, written by Prince in 1979 and released on his 2nd album of that same year. He gave a song called With This Tear to Celine Dion. The Glamorous Life and Love Bizarre on Sheila E's albums (and 95% of the other songs on those albums), is all Prince. Same for The Time with Jungle Love and The Bird. He gave a song called U to Paula Abdul for her Spellbound album. Sugar Walls was a song of his that he gave to Sheena Easton. For the song Stand Back, Stevie asked him to come to the studio to listen to the song, and that is where in 25 minutes, Prince laid out the entire keyboard track for the song, that is him playing on the track. Could go on forever, Prince was everywhere in music, most of which he never took credit for or cared to brag about. Peace

Never heard Prince preform this song, only knew that he wrote it and O’Conner sang it. Now it’s even more beautiful to me than ever before.

Strength and courage to continue the life in this world, make worth your living in the Earth, may God be with you

Prince may be the greatest all around artist. The electric guitar, the exquisite song-writing, the pitch-perfect, instantly recognizable voice and, probably most importantly, those DANCE MOVES! I'm 36, too young to truly know Prince, but he was definitely a genius.
I’m 21, so even younger than you, but I love Prince so much and agree that he’s one of a kind ❤
I'm 35 so likewise, I'll never be able to know Prince the way people who grew up with him. But you know what? We have the time to get to know the history and thankfully we get high quality videos like this ♥
Those dancemoves, unnecessary if you ask me, ultimately 'killed' him. Pelvisproblems, strong painkillers and ultimately the fatal unintended overdose....
I am of an age to remember him very well but not listening at the time. His death hit me like brick and won’t forget where I was. Saddest news, listening now I wish I had heard him sooner. He has gone from us, rest in peace beautiful child and thank you for the cream of the crop, priceless talent

JZuniga1088 Oh damn, this is my first time hearing this masterpiece.
JZuniga1088 sinead wasnt officially Prince's doing. He hated her version. She did it without his permission. But he did release it twice. Once with his group the family in the 80s and then he released a live version on his greatest hits album.
Dweaver573 I wonder if he hated Sinead’s musically or simply because he was upset she covered it without involving him. I’ve read Sinead’s stories about what happened when they met in person and they’re pretty wild (physical altercations, etc)
To be honest while I really like this version Sinead's is a LOT more emotional. I still like it way better than this one and think Prince was probably just throwing shade cus he knew hers was tops.

Add the genius writing of Prince with Sinead's powerful rendition and you have a timeless classic
Not only did Prince write songs, but he played most instruments and produced music. His hands-on approach gave creative power back to artists. By taking full control over the direction of his work, Prince was able to shape the sounds that still influence countless musicians to this very day. Prince's multifaceted talent on numerous instruments was crucial to his musical legacy. He created a unique sound that blended funk, rock, pop, and R&B elements, and his virtuosic playing was a key part of that sound. 2:34 [Indie Band Guru; Olimpus Music]

Not just creating music for us, but to see him just enjoy himself when no one was listening is the greatest gift that I could have gotten. Thank you Prince, you knew why you were keeping these gems locked away, because you knew we would need them while you were gone.
I once had the opportunity to attend an event where his drummer, Bobby Z, spoke about him and described that although Prince had more natural talent in his little finger than most could ever dream, he was also an extremely hard worker. He just worked, worked, worked to perfect what he wanted each song to be, sound like, look like .... So much love for this human being.
2020... brings me tears cause his music never fails to touch my soul 💜
Yessss! Right? He wrote this song, Sinead made a SMASH hit out of it, but when you compare it to Prince singing it, it doesnt measure up. Dude was talented like no other, and in a style ALL his own. 🤜🤛
Prince definitely sounded SO much better singing this ❤️ Rest In Peace Prince..loved and remembered forever ❤️💝💜💜
it also touches my balls
Prince did the best and original version, thank you brother
It's been TWO YEARS since you took your music away
....we miss you so much...#Prince
GloryPatriot can't be two years already???
even his rehearsals were on point!
Ya can't fake talent, and ya can't hide it either...this man was extremely gifted.
What about michael jackson? 😏
@@Acervorochagames yeah? What about him?
When you mention cool it’s just Prince hands down! The best performing ever!
What beautiful tribute to one the greatest musical artist that the world will ever know
Vincent Washington ummmmm it's a cover song.... by bald shennad O'Connor
Prince actually wrote it, so you could say it was his song....
Sean Guthrie correct
+RICK ROLLED{FaCTz} is obviously is Memeing/Trolling everyone since Rick Astley invented the melody but was so busy Rick Rolling across nations on a worldwide tour that he passed-it-over to Prince (who written and composed the song in its entirety in 1984 but didn't release it - instead, he gave it to The Family, a band signed to his Paisley Park label) and because 'The Artist Formerly Known As Prince' was too busying churning-out hits while dating several thousand dimes at the same time...Sinead O'Connor the Weirdo actually snuck through his studio in the middle of the night w/ her Catwoman outfit and pulled-off the biggest heist in music history #FACTS
Screaming Mimi's It’s technically a tribute for it is footage that they probably wouldn’t release if he didn’t die, but upon his death they are releasing footage people have never seen of him and making his music known again after his death because when he died all of his music on UA-cam was copyrighted and taken down.
Prince is a musical genius. He worked on music continuously day and night. It's said that he has thousands of unreleased songs. He has made an impact on the music industry that will always be remembered.
We still love you brother.💜💜💜💜
Prince this was a masterpiece. We miss you
The best part of this song when Prince sings it is the verse ( All the flowers that you planted mama , in the back yard , ……. All died when you went away ) the somber feel of that verse makes your heart drop into your stomach & makes you hang your head in sorrow . It’s like he was crying when he spoke it . You truly feel his pain .
Is he singing about his mother though?
@@ticketyboo2456 no, he's not. Mama/papa is a flirtatious pet name, not refferring to his actual mother :))

En accord avec toi
And yet they made a Dance Video out of it. I dont get it?
This version of this song is a masterpiece.
the original and for me the best.
Goodness, how beautiful! What a lovely surprise!
Two years to the day after Prince’s shocking, tragic, & untimely passing, the timely release of this wonderful song is a poignant reminder of his unique, outstanding talent as a songwriter and musician.
The accompanying rehearsal footage is a testament to Prince’s prowess as a dancer and performer, as well as reflecting his impressive commitment & relentless work ethic.
As many fans have expressed already here, I find it very moving to watch this priceless rehearsal footage, whilst listening to Prince’s emotive original version of this classic song.
Appropriately for me on this 2nd anniversary of his passing, this is a song about love, loss, abandonment, and especially about missing that somebody so very special that one truly adores.
Lyrically I think it is one of Prince’s most accomplished compositions, conveying his broken-heartedness so very potently (‘Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling’).
For many years I had been under the impression that his love for Susannah had inspired Prince to write this amazing song, but apparently Susan Rogers seems to think that it was written about his housekeeper (Sandy Scipioni) back in the early eighties that had left his employ due to a bereavement.
Listening now to this beautiful song about loss & yearning, all I can say is she must have been one heckuva housekeeper! :)
Having heard Prince sing it so powerfully and emotively on many occasions live, it is absolutely amazing now to reflect that he was still singing so passionately about this woman so many years later.
I haven’t heard any of this recording of NC2U before, so it’s completely new to me. I thought that Chris Cornell recorded a pretty good version as a tribute to Prince, but to my ears this original recording totally eclipses that, the Family’s rendition and Sinead’s hit version too.
How many dislikes of this already though?! Sheesh, I didn’t realize Sinead had so many UA-cam accounts! :)
This rendition probably has a more rock orientated arrangement than I expected, though this, coupled with Prince's expressive vocals, still masterly renders the song hugely emotional and soulful.
Right from the start the keyboard part surprised me. To me it sounds strangely frail and vulnerable, almost like it is an old failing Casio. For some strange reason it kinda made me think initially of John Lennon (say like 'Imagine/I am the Walrus').
This recording precedes Prince’s fine ‘Around the World in a Day’ album, which coincidentally is an album, which I had incorrectly thought was influenced by the Beatles. I have since fairly recently read a quote from Prince, which seems to dispel any such notion. It’s interesting to me how wildly I can misinterpret Prince’s work and influences, even after all these years being obsessively immersed in his music.
The initial burst of guitar came as another surprise to me. It’s nice to have Clare Fischer’s string arrangements complimenting the song (albeit buried not very prominently in the mix), and I think Eric does his usual fine job, embellishing with his sax solo, before the superb ‘all the flowers that you planted mama in the backyard’ bridge.
To me this rehearsal footage is genuinely stunning and a joy to savor, as Prince demonstrates his natural gift for dynamic dancing, with spins, splits, & some pretty nifty footwork…all in 3 inch heels no less! 3:57 Awesome! :)
And we even get to see Prince rocking a fur coat just like my momma used to wear when I was a lil’ kid! Awww, sweet! :)
I gotta give props to Wendy and Mark for managing to keep up with those steps whilst playing in the clip, which is no mean feat. Prince worked the band so hard, that Bobby’Z not even allowed to sit down on the job, whilst drumming! :)
I like the moments where he seems to tease Wendy with the mike, and it’s great & life-affirming for me to see him having fun, doing what he loved (playing fantastic music & dancing).
There are a few really cute smiles from him too for us to enjoy. If this is any indication of the jewels in Prince’s vault, we fans still have a lot to look forward to.
Nothing compares 2 Prince…something those of us who love him to bits certainly don’t need reminding. Two years ago today we lost Prince, leaving many of us feeling bereft, ‘like a bird without a song’. Thankfully we still have the cherished gift of his fantastic, funky music to love on.
Like so many folks around the world I miss him terribly. I hope & pray that he is now at Home with the Lord in ‘a better place’, God-willing.
At this solemn time of year for diehard fans, it is thoughtful and generous of his Estate & Warners to release this exquisite song and precious video footage. Thank-you so much for sharing this absolute gem with us!
well said - respect
Thank you for putting in to words (& so eloquently) how legions of fans out there are feeling. The anniversary is a tough one to get through. This release is incredible. We will never stop missing our Prince.
I concur with @Greg Fan and #Chippy 77. 💜
I couldn't agree with you more this is definitely one of his better songs
Prince, Sinead, & finally Chris Cornell…RIP - so much talent. God speed.
Prince was one of the singular geniuses, not just of his generation but of popular music as a whole. His songs readily combined the spiritual and the sensual in a way nobody has done quite that well before or since. He transcended race, gender, and genre effortlessly.
I was terribly saddened by his passing. the industry will have a significant loss. I also believe the story told concerning his death is not the FULL story
Bowie was the only other one in this level...
GREAT, NOW I'M COVERED IN TEARS!💜💜💜
💜💛💜💛
Me too...😢😢😢
This was really interesting to find. I came here because of Sinead passing away and wanted to give Prince due respect for what was his creation. Its really interesting to see it being performed here so early - he mixed it up over the years in his concerts, but I like hearing what it sounded like in his mind not long after he'd written it. Beautiful product of not only Sinead but Prince too. A wonderful partnership.
Yet to see another man dance so flawlessly in heels. RIP purple man💜
Not seen too many men dance that well in flats either to be fair! 😂
One of the cutest faces to have ever walked this Earth. His sweet little smile, his big bright eyes, his suave deep voice, his wit, his incredible skills. He was one of a kind. RIP dear P.
Cute and Sexy at the same time
Yesssss
Don't forget his sass!
@@adhdswamphag definitely a divo!💗
Check me out.. I'm kinda cute
The energy!! And it's only a rehearsal? The man is just incredible!
youre supposed to go full out in rehearsals. thats what rehearsals are for. thats where the magic happens.
The footage is from the rehearsal. The songs you hear is the first studio version.
Prince was a firm believer in the, 'practice the way you are going to play' school of thought.

Thank you for posting this video it makes me smile when I see him dancing and singing. Prince know that your truest fans will never let you die, you will live forever, always in our hearts.
Please! Nobody will be listening to Prince in 40 years. He will go with the silly generation that thinks he is so special today.
Scott n prince will be listened for 1000 years and you will be forgotten as soon as this video ends
Amen, I 4 one will not forget!
Genius musician.
A Legend gone, but NEVER forgotten! We love you Prince!💜

Nothing Compares 2 U, indeed.
Sometimes it Snows in April.
Eric S. Funnily enough it snowed yesterday here in Iowa
Now This Is Content💜💯
Prince, Sinead & Chris Cornell all performed this song amazingly & are all three gone now. Wish I could see any of them live once in my life. RIP.
Lol Cornell
Chris Cornell’s cover is so good. I didn’t care for the original release by Sinead, although her voice was amazing-I was unaware at that time it was a Prince original. Prince was such an amazing artist and a beautiful human being 💜 he left us with so many amazing songs and memories.
Cornell was amazing live, truly underrated vocalist
#1 on trending, thanks, just thanks for this, r.i.p Prince 👑, its 2018 and still hurts....💜🕊☔️
Rip Prince miss you everyday but your music will live on forever
He was precious. He had such a hard road. Knowing all his struggles.. I have so much respect for all that he did meanwhile enduring hardships. He made it look easy and yet deep down his personal journey in life was anything but. ❤️
Prince rules!!
