Prince wrote this song at 18-19 years old, it was a demo. He wrote "I feel for you" and "I wanna be your lover" for a female artist Patrice Rushen. She turned them both down. Rushen did go on to have a hit of her own "forget me nots." This is why those two songs sound like they could be sung by women. I feel for you was covered by multiple female artist a few years after Prince did the songs himself in 1978-79. Rushen missed out. R&b still had a bluesy feel to it at the time. The young Prince set the tone for the future of R&B and was a major influence in pop music.

Fun Fact: I became a Prince fan in the 80's and didn't know he sang this song until the 2010's. It was like finding a xmas present behind the couch in July.
That's funny because I remember watching this as a youngster (7) when it first came out in1979. He really left an impression on me his look his singing and the way he carried himself. He pretty much slipped out of the picture for me until I saw him one night with the "Little Red Corvette" video. I was like oh I remember that guy. Three albums later I rediscovered him having no idea he was still around....no surprise though "Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" were not kid friendly
I remember when I first watched this video nearly 40 years ago. Seems like yesterday. But, no matter when you became a fan, I think we can all agree that when Prince left us he took a piece of our hearts with him.
.. Prince was a teenager when his first couple of albums were composed, produced, arranged and preformed alone.. I know that the thumbs down people didnt/couldnt make a single hit. ANY REAL musician would respect that Prince did all the work and mastered countless instruments. More than likely they have only dabbled in one instrument or they would know that being a multi instrumentalist isnt easy. I cant really understand any other reason for a thumbs down. He is the most PROLIFIC writer in history.. Prince broke the genre lines and is a genre of his own. That should be praised by any real musician.
ua-cam.com/video/4fIRH5Q9czU/v-deo.html I did all (composing, instruments, voice, mixing, vid) on my own because I have no friends (kust kidding :) Living in the Middle of nowhere, the only thing you can do is dream. So even if I, according to your comment, would be allowed to dislike Prince, I gotta say, he was a cool dude and made loadsa good music.
I was in 7th grade in 1979 and I called up the local radio station and asked them to play & dedicate Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" to my new girlfriend - and they did! This was the track that made me get into Prince - the next year, I bought 1980's Dirty Mind, loved it, and on & on... RIP funky genius
It’s 1978, I’m 14 years old and so excited to have my first record player. This was the second single I ever bought - I loved it from the minute I heard it and still love it to this day. It was played on repeat non stop ❤
Lisa T cool. Yep remember them too lights flashing on the Rollie rink floor. Have to say some of us where doing other things too when this song came on...heh heh, but yes wonderful times they were
Classic. Look at the hunger passion and confidence in those eyes, this man had something prove since day one........safe to say he proved all he needed to and more.
3121 MSound never had to prove a thing to me... had me from the first time I heard him sing and again after I saw him perform... then over and over again... Miss him so much...
The late Prince was a powerhouse of Music! He played 27 instruments, wrote all his own and many protoges lyrics, Acted, Directed, Produced, and recorded with everyone from Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Stevie Wonder and Parlament Funkadelic and many others. He was like The Beatles all rolled into one. RIP HIS ROYAL BADNESS.
I’m so glad I grew up at a time one prince was becoming who he was meant to be. Hearing all his new music for the first time watching his videos. I completely love this guy I’m so glad he was part of my teen years.
I'll be jamming to this in 2055, when the world ends and I'm ready to go, I'll be zooming in a wheelchair pretending my rollerskates from 1980 were on...
PRINCE played ALL the instrumenrs on his first 5 albums: For You, Prince,, Dirty Mind, Controversey & 1999. His band was only for touring & stage. Every song he wrote, he'd record it first doing all the vocals & instruments except if there was a solo. He'd leave that part open then the artist would go back & follow him. That came from Susan Rogers. Also, the character Morris was a combo. Of PRINCE & Morris Day clowning around and in the studio PRINCE would talk & behave like the Morris character while he (Prince) was recording! The only thing he loved more than making others laugh is others making him laugh.
Most of my fav artists like Tame Impala and Mac Demarco do the same. That authenticity of the artist... I know Pumped Up Kicks was fully made by the lead singer. Is there a name for an artist that records all their music solo but that has a consistent band? I guess just an artist, no idea.
I admire this man so much!! He wrote , produced and played every instrument in this video ..All him...his way ... Prince NEVER got the acknowledgement and appreciation he deserved, I feel! He was so talented and brilliant....and One of the BEST , if not THE best guitarist that ever lived!!! So happy I got the pleasure of seeing him perform twice!!! He gave us some awesome music ,so appreciative of it all! RIP PRINCE...WE WILL FOREVER LOVE AND MISS YOU !!
First of all.. where have you been living... under a rock?? Prince won praise and acclaim in spite of his being light skin negro male. He was never anyone puppet like those in the black pressure Media gallery! And at risk if sounding like a nut Prince R "death" is a lie because Minnesota is in the process of a takeover by illiberal govt employees. The following Prince R Nelson has is nothing like what any televangelist has ever had! And prince Nelson has GGPs out of Denmark and Norway. Darker color nigroes are so ugggly 😝. And his grandson look so much cuter than prince did age 10 . Picture of Prince R Nelson in elementary school guy is ugggly because the camera is darker so that caucasian look tan!
Beautiful words you have shared about prince he was not appreciated as much as he deserved to be that's very true he was PURE BRILLIANT TALENT, CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING IN HIS PRESENCE ON MORE THAN 1 OCCASION 🙈 there is nothing I wouldn't do for prince...I 💜 PRINCE,
Prince did everything here. He played all the instruments, arrangements, he's the only one that comes out in this video, he shot this video, he even uploaded this video himself too. Don't believe me? Look who's the uploader, Prince!
Time will come, and the media, the professional sector of Music will finally say and recognize that Prince was and is one of the greatest musical Genius who has ever lived on Earth
Prince has so many rap type bars its absolutely fascinating to me. I'm only 31 but my Dad played a ton of Prince and recently passed so I've been digging up memories. I always liked Prince but now I'm starting to see how hes probably one of the best artists to ever exist.
I want to personally thank Prince for helping me with the ladies back in the day. When this album came out, I was a young man still developing my "rap" and just playing Prince's music would put the women in a excited mood. :) RIP Prince. Still can't believe you're gone.

LYRICS
I ain't got no money
I ain't like those other guys you hang around
And it's kinda funny
But they always seem to let you down
And I get discouraged, mmm
'Cause I never see you anymore
And I need your love, babe
That's all I'm living for, yeah
I didn't wanna pressure you, baby
But all I ever wanted to do
I wanna be your lover
I wanna be the only one that makes you come running
I wanna be your lover
I wanna turn you on, turn you out
All night long, make you shout
Oh, lover, yeah
I wanna be the only one you come for
I wanna be your brother
I wanna be your mother and your sister, too
There ain't no other
That can do the things that I'll do to you
And I get discouraged
'Cause you treat me just like a child
And they say I'm so shy, yeah
But with you I just go wild, woo-hoo-hoo
I didn't wanna pressure you, baby, no
But all I ever wanted to do
I wanna be your lover
I wanna be the only one that makes you come running
I wanna be your lover
I wanna turn you on, turn you out
All night long, make you shout
Oh, lover, yeah
I wanna be the only one you come for, yeah

You're kidding, this was the first Prince song I knew, because they showed it on television in Trinidad when I was a really small child.
That's pretty wild and dope!
Love this comment.
I became a fan in the 80's as well.
FUNNIER fact: I didn't know he sang this song until yesterday. Year 2022! 🤪🤫
I remember when I first watched this video nearly 40 years ago. Seems like yesterday.
But, no matter when you became a fan, I think we can all agree that when Prince left us he took a piece of our hearts with him.

Produced, written, arranged, composed and played All the instruments by Prince 💜
Every last one.
That should be praised by any real musician.
ua-cam.com/video/4fIRH5Q9czU/v-deo.html
I did all (composing, instruments, voice, mixing, vid) on my own because I have no friends (kust kidding :)
Living in the Middle of nowhere, the only thing you can do is dream.
So even if I, according to your comment, would be allowed to dislike Prince, I gotta say, he was a cool dude and made loadsa good music.
Luv4oneAnother 1999
He's the greatest musican ever
True and well said! Let it be known that Stevie Wonder was a big influence in his life.
Omg!!! Prince shaking that hair is a whole vibe and 1/2❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was in 7th grade in 1979 and I called up the local radio station and asked them to play & dedicate Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" to my new girlfriend - and they did! This was the track that made me get into Prince - the next year, I bought 1980's Dirty Mind, loved it, and on & on... RIP funky genius
He was pretty awesome!
Same age for me. Damn. This guy became part of my genetic makeup.
Everything about Prince is epic!!! Including this hair 🤦🏽♀️😍😍😍😍👑
So we just going to ignore how he playing all the instruments? Okay ... He is one of the GOAT's.
pixxiesarebetter Prince was and is a gift from god we will never see another genius like him ever again
I noticed
Definitely one of the most talented musicians in my lifetime (and I was born in the late 60s)
He actually thought himself to play 26 different instruments...he was very intelligent.
Prince played 26 instruments. I admit some of them were similar such as bass, guitar Etc. And then there was piano and organ and even the drums!
It’s 1978, I’m 14 years old and so excited to have my first record player. This was the second single I ever bought - I loved it from the minute I heard it and still love it to this day. It was played on repeat non stop ❤
❤
That red scarf on the microphone is everything!
Those early Prince albums were just fantastic

I miss Prince too😢
@@Kassuendaernestina-ed8yn he was such a gift.
@@brandonmoore7497 love that song. 💜
L G you lying
Beautiful words you have shared about prince he was not appreciated as much as he deserved to be that's very true he was PURE BRILLIANT TALENT, CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING IN HIS PRESENCE ON MORE THAN 1 OCCASION 🙈 there is nothing I wouldn't do for prince...I 💜 PRINCE,
Totally agree on everything.
❤
Prince did everything here. He played all the instruments, arrangements, he's the only one that comes out in this video, he shot this video, he even uploaded this video himself too. Don't believe me? Look who's the uploader, Prince!
This was the late 70s, so I'm sure there was a cameraman there.
Self taught my dad played w prince
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
He even knitted his own top and sewed his pants he was that talented.
Designed his own clothing.
I always liked Prince but now I'm starting to see how hes probably one of the best artists to ever exist.
esta canción te da toda la razón

His hair was fabulous!
And feminine
I was born in 1973, so my older brother put me on to Prince as a kid. In an era with legendary musicians, Prince still stands atop
For me it was always the hair, the clothes, the moves, the lyrics and the music that made me stop and pay full attention. Prince was EVERYTHING. ♥♥♥
I’ve prob sang this song 1000 times. Still gives me the chills
Ok
i really love this music
Prince Sounds Almost like MJ here Especially during the late 70s and Early 1980s ," Off the Wall" Era
Timeless classic. It will never die just like Prince's legacy.
Exactly
I want to personally thank Prince for helping me with the ladies back in the day. When this album came out, I was a young man still developing my "rap" and just playing Prince's music would put the women in a excited mood. :) RIP Prince. Still can't believe you're gone.
Roger
