  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2015 Ford F-150 FX4 is being built today and well be on sale before the end of the year. It will be available with almost every engine Ford offers in the new F-150 line up. Until the new Ford Raptor is introduced, it is Ford's most off-road worthy F-150 model. So how does it drive off-road? Recently Nathan and Roman had the chance to find out when they got the 3.5L EcoBoost 2015 F-150 FX4 very muddy and dirty in San Antonio, Texas.

    It seems like whenever they take an "expert" along with them the "expert" has no idea about their product and just ends up looking like an idiot. Like seriously this has happened more than once...

    So fast forwarding to 2020, your guys' review of the 2015 F-150 convinced me to buy one as a replacement for my previous truck. It has been a phenomenal success so far! Thanks for the extensive reviewing of this truck with both its advantages and shortcomings!

    For an off road review there sure was a lot of footage of the cab. Please show more footage of the truck and less of you. I will say that I am quite pleased that this is the first off road course you have done that couldn't be done in a golf cart. That's not to say it was challenging; it was just a significant improvement.

    Those ECOBOOST engines have been winning awards for years. World engines of the year since they came out. Somehow I think they're better then what the opposition trucks offer. But if you didn't know that allready you've been living under a rock. This truck looks AWESOME to me!!!!

    The obvious consensus is "its new, i dont trust it turbo disco potatoes are unreliable because its a vee-six and has to spin a million rpm's to even move from a stop light".
    The truth is turbocharged engines are all around you, every single day you pass semi trucks and medium sized trucks all with turbocharged engines. This means, semi trucks, box trucks, izuzu cab overs you name it if its diesel it has a turbo. The major thing with any turbocharged engine is for one: it only uses as much fuel as your foot commands. Without being under a large load the engine mainly uses the same amount of fuel that the naturally aspirated counterpart would consume sometimes perhaps less. And two: Tuning and correct fuel mapping, ignition timing and observation/correction of variables such as ambient temperature, coolant temperature, oil temperature ETC.. have made way for a much much more reliable engine than we have seen in the 90's when turbos first came out.
    These engines now and days can basically not hurt themselves. Ford proved this by racing its ecoboost around the track for 24hr at full throttle with a trailer on the back. Im not saying they are fool-proof nothing is, but technology and computer tuning is so well refined that reliability is almost the same as a naturally aspirated engine.

    • @Cervan
      @Cervan 9 років тому +1

      And to add on to this wall of text, im not even really a ford fan boy. Im a mechanic as a profession and enjoy engine design no matter who slaps there badge on it. For example, im build a turbo 5.3 chevy vortec with a 4l80e to put in to my project car. But i appreciate what ford is doing, and i think in about ten years when parts are affordable that this v6 will make way for a new era of muscle trucks closer to what the ford lightning was.
      If i was going to buy a new truck what would i pick? the f150 with the eco boost. If i was going to build a weekend dragster? ls1.

      In general terms, and considering world wide experience, there's nothing to worry about with turbo engines. They're just as reliable and long lasting as any other type of engine. However, this is Ford USA we're discussing, so God alone knows what the future holds for the ecoboost !!!!!

    • @ScaleCarModels
      @ScaleCarModels 10 років тому +4

      johnny m I have always been ford guy but recently bought a 06 Sierra WT 1500 with a L33 5.3L engine. Gotta say its 310HP/335TQ rating is quite nice never had issues so far and its rust free with only 49K miles. I am interested to see how the reliability of the ecoboost will be after say 10+ years and 150+K miles under its belt. Just my 2 cents not an expert nor a basher of any of the brands out there.

    • @hightechredneck_0566
      @hightechredneck_0566 10 років тому

      But I bet you would buy a turbo diesel. How is it anymore unreliable as a turbo diesel? That's what people don't realize...

    • @matthebest018
      @matthebest018 10 років тому +5

      jonbar87 Diesels are high compression engines that rarely rev over 3500 rpm's. They make a bunch of twist at low rpm's. The ecoboost is making the same amount of twist at double the rpm making them work allot harder for nothing. You really dont save any fuel and reliability is not there.

    That's funny having a camera system and computer programs to do what I've done all my life. That is to be aware of all your surroundings, to get a picture in your " minds eye" so to speak. Of which I learned about from a Motor Officer that was a 25 urea Warrant Officer IIII, when I was a young private at my first posting in 1973, at Ft. Carson CO. He was the guy who gave me the insight to the minds eye while maneuvering and vehicles. I have used that advice since then, with very good results and no accidents in the 44 years of driving 2-18 wheel vehicles of all types!

    Great video of the new F-150 guys! I have a new video idea: Roman & Nathan should compete for fastest off road lap time. That would get the mud flying! Thoughts?

    • @TFLtruck
      @TFLtruck  10 років тому +9

      We love the idea but Ford may not. This video was all but impossible to shot. Ford didn't want us getting out of the truck to shot it from the outside. We had a very limited time behind the wheel and no window sticker for the price and such. That's a pretty controlled drive. We fear they may not be keen on having Nathan or Roman actually race their brand new truck off-road.

    When you apply turbochargers to an application, compression must be reduced to achieve reliability while maintaining engine timing to produce a clean burn without predetonation or running premium fuel. When an engine runs at full load, the average internal combustion pressure is higher in a turbo engine than a NA engine. The Gm 6.2 requires premium fuel to maintain its 420hp and 460 lb ft with its high compression ratio. Saying the higher internal combustion pressure from a turbo engine reduces reliability is complete crap when stronger internals are used. Since torque arrives earlier with forced induction, it can maintain a lower rpm while generating the same torque. That doesn't mean it's working harder or easier, just changing the power band. A gm engine running at 4,400 rpm will be under similar stress since the amount of rotational force generated is similar, just with lower internal pressure and higher displacement. With a substantially higher compression and much higher boost, diesel engine will run for half a million miles because it's built to. The ecoboost engines are the same since they are built for the higher stress of forced induction. Personally I'd take forced induction over cylinder deactivation because engine stress is uniform. Lexus didn't use cylinder deactivation with their newer performance v8 engines for the same reason. A v6 also has lower complexity than a v8, which is probably why Ford built turbo v6 engines over a smaller turbo v8 that encompassed cylinder deactivation. Each manufacturer does their own thing so it will be a real competition when gm brings the new 8 speed from the zo6 to the 6.2 equipped trucks.

    • @tschultes37

    Why is it that people say the Ecoboosts as a turbo charged motor will be unreliable years from now. No one says that about turbo charged diesels that have been used for years. Ford did quite the torture test on the Ecoboost prior to introduction. I have friends and relatives with ecoboosts and have had nothing but good things to say and no problems at all. They have all said that they pull better and with less effort then their previous v8 half tons. If you like the sound of a v8, buy a v8, my biggest decision right now is if I will buy an FX4 Super Crew with a 2.7 Ecoboost or the 3.5 Ecoboost.

    The #1 limitation on all trucks is approach/departure angles when off roading. Not much you can do about breakover angles with a 4 door pick up if you have the family vehicle in mind, unless you lift it but then it is no longer family friendly. Lifted trucks are hard to get in and out of and hard to load cargo.
    So why cant FX4's and Chevy Z71's come with good approach and departure angles like on a Toyota TRD or like the Raptor. You say the raptor is the best for Off road but the Tacoma is narrower and has a better approach angles. So unless your banging the wide open dessert dunes the Tacoma will go more places than the Raptor will go.
    Im talking get all the new family orientad trucks together (the new family vehicle but with Dad in mind who wants to off road) and mash these trucks head to head. Right off the hop I'll tell you the Tacoma is easier to park, is low enough to load cargo and low enough for family to step into yet has the best clearance. Chevy, Ram and Ford can't compete with Toyota for off road, especially in the midsize Tacoma. The off road suspension and tires actually improves to a softer ride so the trucks are more comfortable for the wife and family going over shty roads. Actually the air ride in the Ram would be neat to see. I would rave about that option but I hear its got its problems, nobody wants to wait for the truck to lower to get out, you want to step out right away with a low step out, also a pain that it switches ride heights too often at the limitation speed where it drops or lifts and your stuck behind a vehicle putting you into and out of this situation by slowing or speeding up. Also heard the air ride wont work in the cold climates.
    Without Quadrasteer the Raptor and larger trucks including the Tundra are just too big to be family friendly. Actually even the Tacoma could use Quadrasteer with its length but its the best we got for a family friendly pick up that can off road. Any serious dune buggy knows the benefits of Quadrasteer and the new Porsche 911 knows the benefits of Quadrasteer on the track not to mention the ease of parking at stores or manipulating parking garages with precision even in a big vehicle.
    But I digress, these off road packages on these family trucks are useless without the combined approach/departure angles that Toyota offers. I agree with the comments below; no outside shots, the front bumper was likely dragging through that mud hole which is going to cost Dad money to replace and he's going to get reamed out by Mom when he gets home. Just buy a Tacoma and avoid the hassle.

      You have to realize also that the majority of these trucks will never see real offroad conditions. Why spend the time and money with R&D to make a truck that will never live up to it's full potential. Honestly, I know and understand where you are coming from, but let's face it, anyone doing any kind of real offroading builds their own rig anyway.

      Daniel Bell Most Raptors never leave the pavement, it is just pride of ownership and the popularity; is why people buy it.
      Then there are the people that actually need and use it for bad blacktop roads. Also, when I access backroads and trails that other trucks cant such as fishing holes and or camp sites or just roll over a snowbank at the end of my driveway instead of waking up early to rescue my truck with a snowblower at -30; is absolutely priceless.
      And I am not talking about serious off roading here, just to off road comfortably and still come back with my everyday vehicle with no damage. The stress of a low bumper in a truck makes you cringe every time you get into a half ass situation, that stress is a horrible feeling when your ownership says "Truck" for a lot of us.
      All they need to do is lift the front bumper approach angle and offer a better suspension on at least one model to dip into the TRD Pro market. How hard is that? So they lose 1mpg on a off road model; off road capable, equal to that of a Tacoma (low step in with gobs of clearance and 4 doors and a full box with no tire in it). So they get some wind drag, so what?

    • @kingdaniel3519
      @kingdaniel3519 9 років тому

      Thomas Paul It's as we both agreed though, the majority of these trucks will hardly ever see those types of situations if at all. Like I said earlier, I know and understand what you are saying. If you absolutely need something with better approach angles, you can either go with what's already on the market, or most likely, you go with aftermarket parts. The manufacturer only does what will sell the most vehicles and designs them with the majority in mind. I agree with you on the Raptor being a status symbol. Let's face it though, now days it's all trucks that are status symbols and not just the Raptor. The people that actually need and use trucks are becoming few and far between.

      Daniel Bell I believe GM loses sales due to their low bumpers. Low bumpers are not a selling feature on midsize trucks. At least 20% off people off road and 40% of Tacomas sold come with the TRD package. Right there GM loses at least 40-50% of the market which directly reflects their current sales vs Tacoma's
      If you think GM knows best then why did they go belly up, they are not experts by any means either.
      It is said that the 4 door truck is the new minivan, thats why companies got away from the minivan and trucks are doing so well. The midsize is more geared towards the younger adventorous crowd that may have families, that need 4 doors and a low step in with gobs of clearance. And an off road "badge" at an affordable price means a lot to these buyers that make up 40% of TRD sales.

    They need to take the Eco from the name. It only gives you like 2 more mpg compared to the V8. Not enough mpg to be called Eco.

    I like ford personally and especially f150s but this track kills it for me.A lot of this course could be done in 2wd drive.
    Nothing against you both here,but I am disappointed that ford is willing to call this a 4 wheel drive course at all. I mean at least you all had a decent mud puddle and a little bit of actual mud but it seriously wasnt much for a four wheel drive if any at all.
