    Between the varying weather conditions and the unrelenting terrain, this was undeniably the toughest winter backpacking route I've ever personally done. It was also a ton of fun :) Oh, and I also did this trip with zero cell service March 10-13, right when the world was apparently getting turned on it's head. All unbeknownst to me of course. As you can imagine, I had quite a bit of catching up to do once I got out of the woods that night, 500 mile's from home, just trying to find a cheeseburger ;) Hope everyone's doing as best they can out there. Hang in there! There's always light at the end of the tunnel and future hiking trips to be had.

    First time watching you, I’ve never hiked, I’m a 75 yr old grandma so it’s something I will leave for young people. You scared me several times, especially on top of the mountain with fog coming in. But I sure forgot being locked in. So thanks!

    I was born, raised and have lived all my life in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Living so close to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I have spent many many days, weeks and months tromping all over those mountains. I have followed you on your trips to the Whites and have enjoyed watching you very much. I was older before I realized just how enjoyable hammock camping can be. I regret that I did not learn about this earlier. Since becoming acquainted with this type of camping I have spent many enjoyable weekends sleeping in my hammock and, whenever possible, under the stars. I am too old now and I am confined to a wheelchair, so I am unable to spend nights sleeping under the stars in those beautiful New Hampshire mountains. Now you take me there and I thank you for that. Stay healthy in these crazy times we are living in. We will get through this pandemic.

    I enjoy your Winter trips. Catching up on this one from last year. I know you know what you are doing but I still worry about you. Tell Mike to get his ass out there with you. But maybe he’s gone soft and couldn’t keep up with you now? One can get stuck in a pattern of sitting on the sofa with the kids developing a dad-bod:) Love ya, Mike!

    I've definitely had that weird dream where you have the hammock setup inside of a shelter. You wake up and think *IF* I had done that, it would be an incredibly easy start to my day. I bet it's a fairly common dream on the trail when no one is around and the weather is a bit questionable.

    Sintax Solo Winter Whites. My absolute favorite style of Sintax adventure! I've wanted to do that area in winter so maybe next year will be it. You had us on the edge of our seats as soon as you set up camp early on Day1 - "No way he's gonna make up the miles." But the pro comes through with epic views to boot. That was harder than the super windy winter trip with Mike up on the Bonds? (Backcountry is the bomb dot com. They are my go to for everthing). Hope that burger was waiting for ya....

    • @sintax77
      @sintax77  4 роки тому +2

      That windy bonds trip was up there, for sure. I think this one edges it out by a little bit simply because on the bonds trip we ended up doubling back into the woods on the second day and turned our attempted loop into an out and back with a pretty chill time at camp the second day and night. On this one I kept pushing through like an idiot and destroyed myself with all that Franconia elevation on the final day, haha. At least the winds were only 40 mph instead of 80 on this one though :)

    I've done the Lafayette ridge trail in the winter. 50mph winds confirmed with a hand held anemometer. Also did Adams in winter with similar conditions. My favorite part is the sign at the beginning of some of the trails that state "warning, people have died here". The whites are no joke, even in summer. Great vid

The fact you did it from Garfield Ridge campsite in the winter is damn impressive. I'll be honest, when you were giving time updates I thought for sure the burger was out of the picture. I have watched most of your videos and I am planning a 4 to 5 day backpacking trip somewhere on the east coast bc we don't want to fly. We've narrowed it down to either the whites or the anorandacks. Any recommendations as to which on would be more worth our time. We've been to the whites before just car camping and really like it but it's a bit farther from our house. Do you think it's worth the extra drive vs just going to high peaks in upstate ny.

    I am so glad you shared this!Have been wondering what happened to all the videos?BTW,the Marmot jacket you got is not truly waterproof-the only thing that is would be is Gore-Tex,but I’m sure you know this.If Backcountry was letting you pick any three items-why not get an Arc’teryx Alpha jacket and be done with replacing jackets every few years.bombproof,waterproof,wind proof and breathable in ways you could only dream about.The one I was issued in Afghanistan saved my life up in the Hindu Kush range(over 12K)when temps drop 60 degrees between day and night.
    Saved me more than once over there,and countless times stateside up in the Adirondacks.

    • @sintax77
      @sintax77  4 роки тому +1

      That jacket sounds pretty aswesome. I had my pick of the litter with Backcountry, but I did have a budget so Arc'teryx would have probably blown my limit, haha. Their stuff does look great. I got dumped on pretty good in the Marmot Exclipse and it held up quite nice though.

      sintax77 if you thought it did well,wait til you try the cream of the crop.In SF we got the absolute best of the best in gear and weapons- I actually learned the right way about layering after getting into a special mission unit.Arc’teryx taught us that we only needed three layers-a baselayer,and midlayer fleece(which is super light-between 100 weight and 200 weight)and that Alpha jacket.I was warm and dry from 80 all the way down to -20 and ready for anything.

      sintax77 funny story on that-before my first deployment to the sandbox,we were issued all new equipment (TA50)and clothing from Arc’teryx LEAF(Law Enforcement Armed Forces)which added up to about 10K per individual soldier.I was an officer and saw how much the unit paid to them,and it was astronomical,but it really lightened our loadout and allowed us to carry more ammo and water,which is far more important than most other things.I remember the CO went batshit crazy when he saw the bill of lading,but we were already on a plane and he couldn’t scream at any of us.Those pieces of gear are with me on every off duty ski trip and outdoor adventure(usually backpacking in the Cascades near my home in Lake Placid.)
      What unit is your buddy in?I was with
      A CO,1st of the 5th Special Forces Grp(ABN)which is the Commander En Extremis Force of the GRP-Direct Action specific.

      lol, that's crazy man. I'm honestly not sure who he's with right now. He's been at it a while. He's away right now, but I'll have to ask.

    Outstanding job. How much did your fully packed backpack weigh. It's a lot more than I want to carry in the White Mountains and in the snow. I look forward to many more of your great videos.

    The factor that tends to get overlooked in these videos is the fact that your doing all the filming too which is a job in it's own right.I bet there were times when you thought about just putting the camera away and just bust it to the jeep,lol.

    Man... I felt for you the whole time on the last day. First when you thought little haystack was liberty, then when you forgot about flume. It’s such a punch in the face when you think your about to start descending and you still have another ascent. You killed it though👍🏻

      Haha, I can't believe I forgot about Flume, but I think it was a blessing in disguise. When I finally popped up on that thing and looked back at what I did, I never would I thought I could have done that before sunset.

      I'd love grab a day pack and finally attempt it as a long dayhike some day. Those people that fly by me trail running it in the summer are crazy by the way. They amaze me every time.
