That should give it enough relief to keep it in one piece until you get to removing the entire damaged bit.

your collection of weird cymbals is truly amazing. the super dry bonk, the egg, the steel cymbals, the printed ones, the road signs, now these broken ones.

For steel race car panels, I'd drill a 5mm hole about 8-10mm ahead of the visible end of the crack. the crack will exist beyond its visible end and you want to stop it in its tracks, and give it a nice radius to spread the stress out. let it make its own way to the hole dont drill too close.
I use a dremel to cut the crack out, and then use a bench grinder to grind it smooth. Or you can use a file and sandpaper if you don't have a grinder. Lots of youtube videos on the subject.

Hey thanks for the content man, you wouldn't happen to know Peter Banks would you? He was my drum teacher and mentor for many years, based in Adelaide. He does gigs and stuff so figured you may have seen him about.
been repairing cracked cymbals for ages, my favorite way to do it is a drill press with a hole saw bit made for tiles. basically you can't "cut" holes, you have to "sand" or "wear" the hole/cut the lines. one studio record my old drummer used crack repaired crashes and ride. middle/throat cracks carefully repaired so as not to lose any edge wash/etc. like reilley's are the absolute best, it basically just changes the length of the note on an already very heavy/short noted part of the cymbal anyway.
I had the 21” Sweet Ride for several years. Fell in love with it’s bell. When you introduced it to the video, I thought to myself “please go for the bell when you play”. And you did. I play crash cymbals on a drumline, and the senior who taught me when I joined broke two two cymbals over his 3 seasons on the line. One fascinating thing about marching crashes is that when they are worn and close to cracking, they’ll start to invert when struck too hard. When a crack would appear, he’d keep playing them until it didn’t sound good, then he broke the cracked portion off and declared them dead. He then used the two broken cymbals to display pictures on at his grad party 😂
Honestly if I got these instead of some normal budget cymbals I'd be extremely happy. The tone is excellent with these. Reminds me of an old Gibson that I bought that's had obvious neck repair. Made people not wanna touch it, but it was 600 dollars so I grabbed that shit instantly. It's one of my favorite guitars. Pickups sound fucking excellent in the thing.
My local drum shop sells top of the line cymbals with factory crack repairs for $75 a piece. So far I have bought, a 18in zildjian K dark medium thin crash, a 17in Sabian HHX crash, and a 18in Sabian AAX raw bell medium crash.
That's super cool. I sometimes keep broken goods, but I never find a use of them as I replace them. But sometimes, it makes want to touch the old things I used to have fan with.
I have never played the drums, and probably never will, but I can tell you the best way to stop a crack, drill a hole at either end (or the end if it goes off the edge I guess) and make sure the hole hits the end of the crack, but don't be afraid to take some material out past the end of the crack too, incase there is some cracking there you can't see. Smooth, roung holes and edges are harder for cracks to form. Cut out the rest of the crack and sand/file the edges rounded and smooth. I know from welding cast iron, you get a crack, carefully drill the ends of the crack, grind out a bit of the crack and weld up the whole thing. Nothing like not doing the prep work and suddenly a crack appears eminating from your weld.
I've had, and still have, a bunch of pro level cymbals that have been repaired (and I've had a bunch of pro level cymbals that I've tossed out before we knew how to repair them like we do now!) including a 90's era 16" K Dark crash with a big swoopy cut, a 17" Sabian AA Medium Thin crash, also with a big swoopy cut, both of which must have had between a quarter and a third of their total area gone, but still sounded great. I've got an 80's era Zildjian A Medium crash with a little triangle cut that sounds like nothing's changed, and an 18" A China Boy with a radial crack in one of the grooves that I did a slot cut on, and it sounds great! Just as China-ry as it was before, but a bit more trashy (and I think louder too). I wish I could have saved my 17" Z Custom Medium crash, that I drilled to stop a crack and it didn't work so I drilled it twice more (when the crack tree-branched off) and eventually it just lost a chunk that fell off. I loved that cymbal.
I cut about 1/3 off a cheap crash after it split -- thin enough to use decent metal shears for the job then a sanding disc on my drill to tidy it up. I'm convinced it sounds better now than before!

There was one cracked cymbal at a drum set at the University near where I live that has a cracked ride cymbal that sounds more like a sizzle cymbal. It's pretty cool.
I have a zildgen 16" K custom dark crash that was given free to me. The thing has a crack almost to the bell and what looks like bad attempts at rivits. It sounds exactly like an fx crash, FOR FREE. always check out cracked cymbals if you need to!! (:
Reminds me of the cymbal I found while metal detecting. Thought it wasn’t too much when I found it, perhaps a cheap modern one. Turned out to be a 1920s to 1930s Ludwig 10" hi hat. Of course it's all bent up and probably will never be usable again due to metal crystallization, but it's still a cool conversation piece!
I loved seeing the broken cymbals... the way the cracks form is due to fatigue (you know if you bend a metal cloth hanger back and forth it will eventually crack and split.. So if you have ever seen cymbals vibrating in slow motion you can see the cymbal waving almost like water making it bend back and forth... But cracks can also be cause because of defects in the material itself...
If there’s anything I learned from watching these videos it’s that the most horribly fucked up cymbals still make some proper good sound when using them👌🏻😄

This just proves that the sound you make is based upon your skill not just the instrument. Though instruments can really be helpful as well.
As someone watching this on a whim with no prior interest, this is just about the most entertaining a video like this could possibly be for me
Best I can tell, the rule of thumb with repairing cracks is you need a nice smooth radius about 6mm or more instead of hard edges on the cuts.
Just stumbled upon your channel, and I'm already learning some neat stuff. My mom's a drummer, so this is pretty cool
Honestly there sound fantastic
It's like I'm getting advice how to build my kit in real time, thank you.
my grandpa use to give me crap for buying pants with holes in them. I wonder what he'd say about this
I've had, and still have, a bunch of pro level cymbals that have been repaired (and I've had a bunch of pro level cymbals that I've tossed out before we knew how to repair them like we do now!) including a 90's era 16" K Dark crash with a big swoopy cut, a 17" Sabian AA Medium Thin crash, also with a big swoopy cut, both of which must have had between a quarter and a third of their total area gone, but still sounded great.
3:56 I thought it was going to be a drum version of Scarlet Fire
Love hearing Vulfpeck in here. Thanks for the video!
i am fascinated by your stream set up, looks so fun!
I cut about 1/3 off a cheap crash after it split -- thin enough to use decent metal shears for the job then a sanding disc on my drill to tidy it up.
I'm convinced it sounds better now than before!
I had a crack in my ride cymbal that slowly tore its way across the whole cymbal, best sounding china cymbal iv ever had
You have the ability of making me watch videos about stuff I don't really care and that is beautiful
"if it sounds good, it is good" thank you for this wisdom c:
1:21 did NOT expect Wade to bust out a Vulfpeck tune, this guy is incredible!
i love your ealy 2000´s aestetic
I LIKED THEM - sounded complex and nice
Getting broken cyms instead of beginner cymbals is actually a really good idea, good tip
The *tonk* at the beginning sold me on this video.
My dad still uses the marching cymbal he stole from his high school as a ride lol
My local drum shop sells top of the line cymbals with factory crack repairs for $75 a piece. So far I have bought, a 18in zildjian K dark medium thin crash, a 17in Sabian HHX crash, and a 18in Sabian AAX raw bell medium crash. And all for less then the
Obsessed w this man’s streaming setup
That ride has a beautiful tone
You're such a good drummer, that you can make actual trash sound awesome. Its nice to watch someone who is a master of their craft.
There was one cracked cymbal at a drum set at the University near where I live that has a cracked ride cymbal that sounds more like a sizzle cymbal. It's pretty cool.
Somehow, I've managed to find both of your channels, completely unrelated, like a year apart. That's how you know it's good content.
You got a merch shop on the go m8? Counting the days til I can get Frank's noodley mug on a mug. Cheers 🥁
I love how his stream is just slowly going through all the windows versions...
Of course it's all bent up and probably will never be usable again due to metal crystallization, but it's still a cool conversation piece!
how did i just put it together that you are frank the snakes owner!!! i love frankie! great playing as well
They ARE awesome! unique and distinct! thank you!
At least it did not turn into an egg.
Drumming to Dagothwave is such a cromulent choice
Okay but real talk? Thanks to this video I just realised I _love_ the sound of brass cymbals.
I hadn't expected to hear Dagothwave but I'm so, so glad I did
You can’t hide, DankPods
I loved seeing the broken cymbals... the way the cracks form is due to fatigue (you know if you bend a metal cloth hanger back and forth it will eventually crack and split..
So if you have ever seen cymbals vibrating in slow motion you can see the cymbal waving almost like water making it bend back and forth...
But cracks can also be cause because of defects in the material itself...
If there’s anything I learned from watching these videos it’s that the most horribly fucked up cymbals still make some proper good sound when using them👌🏻😄
Wade talks about all these legends he looks up too, but he himself is a legend in his own right.
