Rex is the Whisk(e)y Ninja! His vast knowledge and superiority to Daniel is above reproach. Clearly the smartest man in the history of men. A gentleman and a scholar. We are all better simply being able to witness his whisk(e)y prowess. A true honor.
Recently made a trip to my new work location (couple states away) and went on a food tour. Ended up sitting at a bar talking bourbon/whiskey with the bar tender (he had a couple shelves like yours, just all bourbon). He said when I finally get to move I need to come by and he'll save me a bottle. So thanks for making these episodes and introducing me to the ways of the whiskey drinker. The entertainment value aside, it's been one hell of an educational ride and my social transition to a new state and a new job is going to benefit greatly from it.
So, I actually have a question for Sexy Rexy today! After watching a large number of your videos, my girlfriend has decided she wants to get into whiskey (I've been trying to do that for years so thank you!). I've been slowly introducing it to her bc has virtually no whiskey experience so nights she drinks it, I pour us 3 different whiskies and at the end we do a blind taste test to determine which is which. We do this based on Daniel's recommendation in the Pappy video. It's been very successful for me to recognize certain flavors, but all she says she tastes is "whiskey and wood". Haha She can accurately distinguish which whiskey is which, so she can tell there's a difference between them. But without the experience of knowing what each grain tastes or smells like, she can't come up with any other flavors other than "whiskey and wood", even if I tell her what she should be tasting/smelling. The alcohol seems to be a barrier she's having trouble overcoming as well. Since starting this channel your palate has obviously become more advanced. So, I'm wondering how long it took before you were able to accurately pick out certain flavors and if there are any other techniques that have helped you along the way? Daniel, feel free to share your thoughts as well!
I'm happy you pulled out the Del Bac. My local Total Wine recently picked out an entire barrel from Del Bac to have bottled specifically for them. So, all the whiskey guys from that store got together and did a tasting to find the best one. They now own the entire cask! I bought a few bottles of it bc I loved the idea that they got to hand pick a barrel. Great price too for a very good whiskey!
My reply is about four months too late, but... No matter how they answer, I still want to mention, The Glenlivet 18 year old is my favorite whisky. It's about $118 in New England. Cheers!
While shopping, grabbed the last 2 bottles of Glenlivet 12 for a steal, $20 per bottle tax free. And this will be my first Single Malt. I am hoping to refine my tastes, going from dark rum to whiskey
I just got a gift pack yesterday of Colkegan! It has a cask strength and sherry cask in the box also. I absolutely love these whiskeys! The best thing is the distillery is only 3 1/2 hours from me 😁
So I've been playing around with blending stuff just on my shelf. (Maybe this is an episode for the new channel). I found that a 3-4:1 Aberlour 12 double cask:Buffalo Trace blend resolves fairly well. I've really gotten stuck on the home blend idea (I'm totally buying a barrel), and wondered if you had some general tips. What makes a good base for a blend? Are there flavors that just don't work together? Are there flavors that dominate a blend that should be sued sparingly? etc.
Honestly, trial and error are your friends. Most blend base whisky is pretty simple/boring on its own. Go easy on the dramatically flavored whiskies until you know how they affect the whole. Careful with peated whisky. it takes over. share the best, and drink the mistakes.
Hey Daniel, In most wine making they top off the barrels every week to two weeks in order to make sure there is little to no air in the barrel to avoid oxidizing the wine. Is the same thing done for Whiskey or do they just let the natural evaporation leave headspace?
Not with whisky. they just let it evaporate. You do that with wine to inhibit the growth of microbacterial stuff. To keep the flavors like they should be. With whisky, the alcohol content is high enough to keep that from happening on its own.
"when people see me walking across a room, they comment on my physicality." This makes me picture Rex just shoulder-checking his way through a crowd like a cow in a ballroom.
Hey guys! New subscriber here. I see that you guys have done a review on Macallen 12yr double cask. However, the only Macallen that I can find in my region (southern Peru) is the 12yr Fine Oak. If you have a bottle, would you mind doing a review on it? I get like fermented dough and toffee notes. Also Daniel you mentioned being in a band and playing gigs. What kinda music did you play?
I think we have that one. We'll add it in! I was a session player actually, so I played in 100's of bands in different styles and on different instruments. My solo stuff was more Texas country and Rock.
Bought it before I watched this and just couldn't stand it no matter what I did so I returned it. Found it not bad in an old fashion w/ whistle pig rye 10, no orange peel and extra cherries.. and or course everything else needed
Is it possible to get del bac in CT? I found a website to buy the New Mexico one, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get del bac outside of the southwest.
Hey guys, Great Stuff! And help with how to get these harder to find whiskeys in Texas where Shipping liquor is super complicated? Cant seem to find Colkegan or Del Bac on specs or total wine websites. Any places that can order online and have shipped to Texas? thanks guys.
Did you MB's ever get the blended American SMW off the ground? I don't recall a WT or WV vid about it. Sounds like an amazing project. I just discovered Colkegan at an Australia restaurant tonight - blew me away. Amazing. Hence me checking out the WV channel to see whether the whisky had been reviewed and it had. It is now on my Kungfu list!
I know I already put in a request last week, but I have another. There is an Icelandic whiskey called Floki I would love to see you try! Especially the Sheep Dung smoked!
Was this the 4th episode in a row? :D You should do a marathon of these, they get better the more you do in a row. Or I just might get drunker watching these and drinking the same time. damn.
Hey Daniel. The vault seems to be one of the finest places on earth, but I wars wondering what the worst whisk(e)y in there is... and by worst, I mean your least favorite? 🥃
Fair enough... by the way, I have a technical question: I'm about to barrel age 5 liter corn whiskey, but living in Denmark, what can I call it? My barrel is first fill, so I can't call it corn whiskey.. any thoughts? 🙂
according to technical terms, only whiskey. According to how it's made (other than not being us), if the corn is less than 80% of the mash, you effectively are making a bourbon!
Awesome episode guys do you guys ever get tired of hearing that? I was best man at my brother in laws wedding last week and the bride knows I've recently started drinking whisk(e)y and she bought me a bottle of whistlepig 10 it's really nice so I looked into whistlepig and was wondering if you guys have the boss hog or any of the others? What are your thoughts on them? Enjoy the day fellas.
New subscriber here and loving channel! A friend of mine who brought me to the whisky world keeps talking about what he claims to be the best single malt he ever had, a Dalmore King Alexander III (which I can't find here). I would love to know your opinion on it.
Your friend is right, it's a freaking amazing whisky. I'm partial to Dalmore, so it's easy for me to love it. But it's an older whisky that is rich and not boring. Wonderful. Welcome to the channel!
Infused with orange zest, cassia, and cloves. You knew this. You bought this. And you're trying to make us believe that you were surprised that it was crap? I call shenanigans.
Totally agree, I live in Mexico and it's very difficult to come by, but I would love to see you guys review and compare the Original to the Diamond Peak (I'm assuming the Snowflake it's hard to come by even in the States). Also, it would be awesome if you did a vis-à-vis of Lagavulin 16 and Caol Ila (my two favs ever). Love your show, keep up the good spirits. Sláinte!
Rex you can even pretend to feel 'superior' to Daniel hahaha he just has that silly necklace .. you've gone to 11 ... suspenders ....but remember just pretend haha
but... but I AM superior to Daniel. My whiskey knowledge is the ocean to his puddle. You all see that right?? It's not just me who knows that... RIGHT?!??
I bought this whiskey and can’t even drink it. It is flat out awful! I can’t bring myself to pour it down the drain but just might wind up actually doing that. The worst whiskey I’ve ever tasted. Yep “tree bark” is a good call on this one. It’s like chewing on tree bark!

I humbly accept your truth.

Yes! Us whiskey people stick together. And when you find a bar like that, you never leave.

Having a hard time finding it in Kentucky, even at total wine = sad face
I'm still waiting to find out which whiskys are the best and the most expensive in the vault..
Ya i think we whiffed on that question. We'll get to it in the next recording session.

Holy crap! Damn cheap! Well played.
The Colkegan is easily one of my favorites.
I just got a gift pack yesterday of Colkegan! It has a cask strength and sherry cask in the box also. I absolutely love these whiskeys! The best thing is the distillery is only 3 1/2 hours from me 😁
I love the end quote. Rex, stop being a grumpy old man.

Tullamore DEW is my clubhouse favorite right now. Pretty neutral flavor, nothing deep that could conflict with other notes, and $25/bottle.

I haven't been able to either. I only have it because one of our students lives in Tucson and brings it when he visits.

Orangerie would probably make an amazing old fashioned with a little orange bitters and a bit of amaretto!
That's basically its only purpose.
high altitude lowers the boiling point of water. what will that do to the whisky?
It definitely changes the distillation numbers!

My hometown! Hopefully will be better two years later.
"I'm over it!" Baah hahahaha!
Daniel 'I want to see an episode of mooch academy'
Dude you've been in like 140 ;)
Was this the 4th episode in a row? :D You should do a marathon of these, they get better the more you do in a row. Or I just might get drunker watching these and drinking the same time. damn.
Are either of you related to me? A big gathering, and you go off on your own for a tasting!
Every damn time.
How cool is this? I'm a celebrity! It's me, it's me, it's TonyG!!! :D
The one and only.
Have you ever heard of a music group called Cellophane? They mostly wrap.
Hey Daniel.
The vault seems to be one of the finest places on earth, but I wars wondering what the worst whisk(e)y in there is... and by worst, I mean your least favorite? 🥃
I'll never tell. My mom told me, if I can't say something nice, don't say anything ;-)
Fair enough...
by the way, I have a technical question:

Colkegan Cask Strength. The flavor is even more pronounced.

Well played on Whistle Pig! We did a video on the Farmstock. Dig it. ua-cam.com/video/TJ0mHJ6aC4w/v-deo.html
I just bought a bottle of The Singleton Spey Cascade. I'd love to sip on it with you guys if you want to give it a go.
I'll see if we can get one!

Did I tell you the time I fell in love during a backflip? I was heels over head.
What is the new channel called
Soon
New channel.. WHEEEEN? :D
Working on it!
The price for the mooch academy is a mid range whiskey. The first lesson is never give away whiskey without good reason.
what about Stranahan's?
It's freaking awesome. Maybe one of the best malts. Love them.
Totally agree, I live in Mexico and it's very difficult to come by, but I would love to see you guys review and compare the Original to the Diamond Peak (I'm assuming the Snowflake it's hard to come by even in the States). Man, you have great taste. Caol Ila and Lagavulin 16 are amazing.
What rhymes with orangerie?
menagerie
Maybe after a few drams it does. You can name one of your new products Orangerie is the New Black (Label)
Ménage à trois
Just as long as you and Daniel aren't pictured as two of the three on the bottle label. There isn't enough ABV to drink that visual away.
Don't forget about the Chad.
you need to change to the suspenders of mooch!!!
bonus: two glasses hahahaha
i really like this idea. the 2 glasses could be my nipple shields.
Rex hahaha .. epic build numbah twoooooo
RIGHT?!??
Rex haha it is interesting to watch ...
Is there a bottle of something you just absolutely hate in the vault?
Also if you need to get rid of it I can give you my address.
Daniel isn't in a bottle...
nicely done.
Rex just dipping my toes in the pool of moochitude.
The Mooch Academy happens every Somm Class, just show up, act like you belong, all it requires is a home made Flava Flav clock.
it must be monday
"Who's that fuckin' elephant?"
$58 on Drizly
I bought this whiskey and can’t even drink it. It is flat out awful! I can’t bring myself to pour it down the drain but just might wind up actually doing that. The worst whiskey I’ve ever tasted. Yep “tree bark” is a good call on this one. It’s like chewing on tree bark!
Hine
Colkegan single malt is flat out awful!
