Dude! Daniel! Please do that. Do another Whiskey Nerd channel! I love learning all the nerdy shit and hearing all the whiskey stories and things about the distilleries! Definitely start something like that, us fellow Whiskey Nerds will appreciate it!
Hi guys I started watching your videos about a week ago and have made my way through too damn many of them, you guys are just so feckin entertaining and informative. So good in fact that I was inspired to go out and buy a bottle of The Irishman on my way to work the very night i started watching this channel as a 19yo Irishman myself (don't worry that's legal here). Have to say lads, spot on. I love it so keep on providing this public service and slainte (ss-lawn-cha).
Rex the ravishingly radiant recipient of refreshments. Danny the distressingly disheveled deviant. You guys make the best videos on UA-cam. Keep up the great work.
Once again another great video. I can't believe Rex got out Mooched. Having said all of that I have done the tour at the Corsair distillery which is a nice tour however the Triple Smoked is not for me. But I am very excited to try the Henry McKenna and Glenlivet Founders Reserve mix. Keep at it fellas!
I second the side-channel for all our nerd-out needs! Although lately Rex has been doing pretty good in his descriptions of what he's smelling and tasting, while Daniel likes to regale us with interesting facts and fictions.
I love Corsair, but I found the triple smoke a touch aggressive with the smoke. It is fabulous when used a splash at a time in a cocktail (usually something whiskey based) to bring a warm smokiness to the beverage.
I know you're a whiskey channel, but a splash into a dry gin martini is delightful. You have to go dry with the martini, since the whiskey brings some sweetness to the table as well, but the smoke plays really well with the olive brine and aromatics from the gin
I have been loving the videos this is a awesome thing you guys have going on. It has made me and my girlfriend get back into drinking some whisky, and oh how i have missed it. I have been binge watching the episodes you have up and she has been right there with me the whole time. So the most amazing thing happened the other night, she gets up and just leaves the apartment, I was most defiantly confused. Some time goes by and she returns with a bag. Perplexed I ask, " what is in the bag?". She then whips out a bottle of Angels Envy bourbon, that we saw on one of the videos, and a bottle of absinthe. Needless to say it was a good night. Thanks for bringing the love of spirits back into our life. side note I would love to hear some total nerding out on whisky. As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point your way.
i would love to see a review of the glenlivet founders reserve. Especially since it seems to be taking the place of the glenlivet 12, an absolute legend. A comparison between the two would be very informative.
I know this is an older video but as a Nashvillian I *have* to point out that "Tennessee Whiskey" is a specific product designation requiring (in all cases but one grandfathered-in distillery for historical purposes) specific rules and notably requiring the Lincoln County charcoal filter. Not all whiskey's from Tennessee are a "Tennessee Whiskey" and I do not believe or could find Corsair using that process or labeling their products as such, also having done the distillery visit before. I even know they directly stated they try to differentiate themselves from Tennessee Whiskeys.
In Chess (just an example) player become very aware of the idea: Strategy versus Tactics. Rex talks mooching tactics only. If Rex talked openly about the mooching strategy he would downplay retribution... on a strategic level the most important thing would be keeping this arrangement going smoothly, since if you look ahead a bit it's the best mooching scenario imaginable. A quick example... a day's mooching goes wrong (hypothetically) so Rex pitches a huge "I'm leaving forever fit." That makes no sense. Optimize for the longer term. My exaggerated example: Rex and I are playing chess... I offer Rex my queen, so he mooches it... he takes it. My next move is checkmate. In an advanced thinking game you don't optimize each move by itself, there's the higher level goal. Don't worry about your daily gain as long as you get some free whisky. Optimize on the strategic level... just make sure Daniel is happy and each 'day' he'll keep handing you free whisky. [I understand your reply will be "It's just a show, it's not real." Ya, I know, but keep in mind the audience if they watch a lot of shows are seeing the big picture. You can't go hundreds of episodes without accepting that you and the audience should be able to see the big picture.] Cheers.
Oh man, I feel famous! Next question (mildly related): How do you, Daniel (I don't expect Rex to care, he's just the pretty trophy-host) feel about the use of nonstandard grains in whiskey? Tradition vs innovation?
I think it's interested, but I have yet to find one that I truly love. But I'm all for trying things! Love the spirit of innovation pervading the industry right now.
Budweiser used to be advertised as “Beechwood aged.” I did taste this whiskey at the distillery in early Dec. I actually liked it. I’m more of a rye or high rye bourbon drinker…
Loving the channel so far! Like a lot of people, I discovered you guys from The Modern Rogue. I've learned a whole lot from all your videos. I made it a point this year to try as many different whisky variants as I could to try and develop a sense of taste and smell for them. So this channel has been great for finding my next whisky to try! I just recently started to notice that mixing water brought out the flavors and smell a heck of a lot more than sipping it neat. Without the water I pretty much only tasted the bite, while raising the temperature of the tongue and then pretty much numbing the experience from then on. I'm assuming this taste/bite is due to the fact your body doesn't want us to consume ethanol? I notice you guys rarely mix water with the whisky you try in these videos. How long would you say it takes to get used to this "bite"? I also like to brew beer as a hobby, so naturally I became intrigued with the distilling process. Do you guys have any thoughts on legalizing distilling alcohol as a hobby in the states?
Welcome! Yes, the water absolutely opens up and removes the aggressive alcohol edge. the more you drink they less that will bother you, but adding water will always be a nice thing to try with any whisky. You'll learn you love different whiskies with different qty's of water. no thoughts! Just whisky ;-)
Howdy guys. Stumbled across your channel this past weekend after watching a Ralfy review and got hooked. I think I have gotten through about 80% of the back catalog at this point. Keep up the awesome job. I will be in Louisville, KY over the 4th of July and want to bring home a few bottles. Are there any lesser known but delicious bottles I should keep an eye out for? Big fan of wheated bourbons especially. Currently sipping on a Vintage Bourbon 17 while I enjoy your camaraderie.
Man, you should get anything in Kentucky ;-) There's not really a bad choice. Remember that Heaven Hill is the one responsible for some of the best wheated stuff on the market. If you can find a Blanton's, buy it. Otherwise, no wrong decision to be made.
How does one develop a palate? I can get some general flavors, but how do you get so specific? Is it just something you're born with, or do you have to practice? (Oh darn, I'll have to drink more!)
There are only two things to develop a palate. Drink regularly but with the space to sit and think about what you're drinking. And work with a tasting chart. It will help ideas of things come to your heard that you couldn't have thought of on your own. Write down what you experience, and any time you think you're finding the same thing in a different whisky, compare them to see what's different. Just practice, my friend! I love this tasting chart for whisky designed by our friends. It's a free download. whiskeysmiths.com/whisky-deductive-tasting/
Hi. I'm a long-time viewer; sometime fan. (Oh hell, I admit it. I look forward to your videos every day). I watched this video while drinking John Barr Reserve Blend. If possible will you review it and tell me what I think? The bottle is half gone and I'm still not sure if I like it!!??
Hey guys! My birthday is Saturday, so I'm thinking of celebrating in the best way possible: with whiskey! Based on what I've seen you guys have given me a pretty good insight on what to get, and for that I thank you. On a more inquisitional note: Since, in most countries, a whisk(e)y needs to be aged in oak to be called as such, is there a minimum amount of time that it needs to be aged in said oak? For example, could you age a new whiskey for, say, 6 months in oak an then 4 years in, I don't know, Larch? Or really any wood, given you could find a barrel of that wood. OH! And congrats on almost reaching 2K!
You can definitely use any wood! But there are minimum oak requirements depending on what you're making. Bourbon has to be 2 yrs in new oak. and Scotch 3 years in used oak minimum. After that it's up for grabs!
Excellent job guys. I love your banter. You're evolving to my absolute favourite channel on yutup. And hot damn, I'm so eager to see how the new channel turns out now! You better don't fuck this up! Much love tho
Okay. It looks as though I’m late to comment but I will anyway being that I just saw this. I have just barely started drinking whiskey . (Or any thing at all) I thought ,well I’m 1/4 Scot so why not. I made the worst mistake. Scotch and coke. I thought it was horrible. I now know better thanks to you two. I don’t even care for Crown and coke now. So I have tried Glenlivet 12 and Macallan 12 I tried to slow down and really taste all the noted that you describe. So far I smell more butterscotch and taste peppery taste and right when the glands kick in I get the smoke. It’s getting good. But what happened when I tried Highland Park 12. (Green label ). Wow. The smoke almost overwhelmed me? It almost made me not want to go back to any scotch. I am better now and really have taken a liking to the Macallan. Thanks you two. Your a lot of fun
What are your thoughts on the Bowmore Devil's Cask? I picked some up recently and have been enjoying it. When I went online to find out more about it, I found out there's a big controversy about it (I guess they priced it significantly higher in the UK than the US). I'm curious what you guys think about it all (whisky and controversy).
Some fancy stuff again. love it. this one at a more approachable level (damn my english sucks). A little hipster'ish. I can buy it in Denmark for 140-145$ limited supply. Hipsterwhisky. love it
Dumb question. If you decided to blend those as you have shown us... Would you leave them in there respective bottles and blend them as you drink them or would you blend them into a decanter ahead of time? Or does it matter?
what's your opinion on Talisker Dark Storm? Apparently it's a travel retail exclusive I've picked up some time ago. Since then I've liked whisky more and more but still love that taste and would love to know what a profeassional thinks about it.
Daniel! Here's one you've probably already answered (but that I haven't yet seen as I'm taking my time watching the videos). I recently saw a new spirit classification that I was not aware of, and it seems contradictory. It is listed as being a "Single Malt Bourbon." HOW CAN THIS BE?!?!?! Please explain this while I attempt to untwist my brain....
This is a weird one that I have no answer for. Where did you see the new classification? The only thing I can think of is, American whisky regulations don't have a category defining and restricting the use of "single malt". But they do around Bourbon. I'm just as confused as you. More details? brand or distillery?
What would you guys recommend for a new whiskey drinker to get there taste buds used to the flavors. I know some only taste and smell the alcohol. Certain whisky you guys recommend for them to get into or learn?
Rex started a comment thread where our viewers posted intro recommendations! you can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/4F5ivVKV5rk/v-deo.html&lc=z13aun2hws34un2vh23ehpgqyx3kczszr04
Hey guys, I'm in the DC are and I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Joseph A Magnus Straight Bourbon and Murray Hill Club Blended Bourbon. I recently discovered your channel and I have been binge watching old episodes. Thanks for the entertainment and education.
So I keep seeing Deanston in the background and have been curious about their stuff...when y'all gonna review them? Also, when can I pick up my mooch portion of Fitzgerald!?😁
The finish on this is like smoked meats. And, Rex just used the adjective constantly maligned by you guys “smooth” in his description of the Glenlivet and McKenna blend. Whaaaa....?
Daniel should do another channel alone and go back to every whisky you guys have done on this channel for the real serious impression. but Rex should do the same thing alone for his awesome mooch commentary. Though the magic of what you guys do would probably vanish and it might cause real alcohol problems, but hey, more Daniel and Rex drinking whisky I can't afford :)
The goal of producing vodka is to remove as many of the flavor congeners as possible. The congeners are mostly what is responsible for the flavors, smells, oils, and mouth feel of darker alcohols. Since vodka removes those, there's less reaction in the mouth.
The Mooch got outmooched!! Need to up your game Mooch, that is not on! ;) Thought I read someplace the other day that 60% of new whisky drinkers these days are women. Fantastic stuff if correct.
Can you stop sensoring your videos? I mean you have to be 21 to drink (at least in the US), but you won't let us hear you say fuck? Can I suggest you guys remove the censorship or use it comedically? You guys have a real talent for combining comedy, entertainment, and education. But we're adults here. And those of us who aren't are probably leaving the majority of the profane comments anyways. Lmao love you guys I'm learning a lot and falling so much more in love with whiskey, especially Scotch. Big ups to you guys. Edit: my comment seems real negtive at first but I only intend to give a friendly selfish suggestion as a fan. Cae out bitchy accidentally Ive drank too mux
Hey guys, have you heard of a new release from Glenlivet? It's pretty awesome in my opinion. It's called The Code. ( www.theglenlivet.com/en-en/the-code ) I'd love to see a review of it if you guys can get your hands on a bottle. I had to order the bottle I have online.
Dude! Daniel! Please do that. Do another Whiskey Nerd channel! I love learning all the nerdy shit and hearing all the whiskey stories and things about the distilleries! Definitely start something like that, us fellow Whiskey Nerds will appreciate it!
I just so happened to have a bottle of both the Glenlivet 12 and Henry Mckenna 10. I was blown away by how amazing it was! Many thanks to Natalie!!
I am SO happy I found this channel! Always was a whiskey fan, but never found the right crowd - but now I did! Awesome content, I love it!
Hi guys I started watching your videos about a week ago and have made my way through too damn many of them, you guys are just so feckin entertaining and informative.

That's awesome! Thank you! Love Walsh Distillery. They're doing amazing things.
Rex the ravishingly radiant recipient of refreshments. Danny the distressingly disheveled deviant. You guys make the best videos on UA-cam. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
I like how you talk real good with them purdy words.
Once again another great video. I can't believe Rex got out Mooched. But I am very excited to try the Henry McKenna and Glenlivet Founders Reserve mix. Keep at it fellas!
Yes Daniel go Super Whiskey Nerd I know I would love to know the details to it all, from the history on the person, how its made etc!!
Yeah, it was a bit hefty. I'd never thought of it in a mixed drink. That would be amazing!
I know you're a whiskey channel, but a splash into a dry gin martini is delightful. You have to go dry with the martini, since the whiskey brings some sweetness to the table as well, but the smoke plays really well with the olive brine and aromatics from the gin
"I hope you stay a long time and that I don't say anything to offend you" should have been part of my wedding vows. Lol

This is awesome! Love it, and good choice on the whiskey. And obviously on the girlfriend as well.
And a truly amusingly enjoyable toast ;-)
that look Daniel gives the camera after snaking Rexs whiskey.
I'm dead
It's about time!
It was Daniel's smoothest move yet. I look forward to more.

I literally just bought both of these today not knowing this video existed. Damn.
Picked up the wildfire hickory smoked barley bottle. My first single malt American whiskey.
Oh man, I feel famous!
Next question (mildly related):

Fun stuff guys. Anxious to try this blend!

We'll try not to fuck it up.
Wizard Academy any eta on the new channel?
Shooting tomorrow, weather permitting. Aiming for release next Friday.

I've heard the backlash about triple the price for Devil 3, but haven't tried it. We'll see!
I have a friend in your area who said he'd be willing to bring you a bottle.
It will definitely change the longer it sits together. And the decanter won't be as tight of a seal, so time becomes a factor. my vote?... Try both!
what's your opinion on Talisker Dark Storm? Apparently it's a travel retail exclusive I've picked up some time ago. Since then I've liked whisky more and more but still love that taste and would love to know what a profeassional thinks about it.
I can't get a bottle! I'm trying to convince someone to mail me one, but it's duty free exclusive.
Wizard Academy next time I find it in duty free I'll see what I can do about that ;)
A friend of mine is returning from the UK with a fresh new bottle of Dark Storm.
Contact me if you're interested :)
Daniel!
Here's one you've probably already answered (but that I haven't yet seen as I'm taking my time watching the videos).
I recently saw a new spirit classification that I was not aware of, and it seems contradictory.
It is listed as being a "Single Malt Bourbon."
HOW CAN THIS BE?!?!?!
Hey guys, I'm in the DC are and I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Joseph A Magnus Straight Bourbon and Murray Hill Club Blended Bourbon. I recently discovered your channel and I have been binge watching old episodes. Thanks for the entertainment and education.
I haven't had either, but I do have two sommeliers who live in the area! I'll check with them.
Best liquor show ever!!!!!
How do you make a hankie dance? Put a little boogie in it.
great video, what do u think is a better whisky, the aberlour 12 or the glenfiddich 15?
I much prefer the Aberlour 12. But the Glenfiddich 15 is a different animal. Both beautiful.
So I keep seeing Deanston in the background and have been curious about their stuff...when y'all gonna review them? Also, when can I pick up my mooch portion of Fitzgerald!?😁
Deanston is one of my favorites. They're all good. We'll review it!
You guys should review the Macallan 15 year Fine Oak. Recently got into the videos and I've really enjoyed watching them!
I'll see if we can find it!
Is it possible that all whiskeys are better when blended w/ another whiskey?
It's very possible.
How could you not remember Sherlock Holmes "Adventure of the Copper Beeches"? How do you like them beeches?
That yeehaw killed me
Let's go get some beach today!
The finish on this is like smoked meats.
And, Rex just used the adjective constantly maligned by you guys “smooth” in his description of the Glenlivet and McKenna blend. Whaaaa....?
Have u guys tried Amrut fusion yet ?
I have an Amrut in the vault, but it's their generic single malt.
Try it again. Feed some to Rex.
I find it fascinatingly different from any single malt from Scotland.
Thank you Daniel for being the nerdy one and if you do actually make that video , Rex you can be there just to drink some damn whiskey 👌😂
You can say a Beech Tree.
YOU FINALLY GAVE REX SOME SHIT. good on you ....... dan ;)
Is there any reason why mouth smell more after drinking Whisky then say Vodka..??
The goal of producing vodka is to remove as many of the flavor congeners as possible. The congeners are mostly what is responsible for the flavors, smells, oils, and mouth feel of darker alcohols. Since vodka removes those, there's less reaction in the mouth.
is it true that expensive whisky have less smell than cheap ones..?? nd if possible can we get rid of that smell..
Beech is a hardwood like Maple. as far as smoking goes it's generally a really light flavor, which may be getting overpowered by the cherry and peat
The Mooch got outmooched!! Need to up your game Mooch, that is not on! ;)
Thought I read someplace the other day that 60% of new whisky drinkers these days are women. Fantastic stuff if correct.
I think it's true. It's definitely true for our sommelier program. About 30% of our sommelier graduates are women.
Just a shame the women I meet are never into my cask strength Laphroaig's damnit!! :D
Mooch squared = scotch + bourbon
Hey guys, have you heard of a new release from Glenlivet? It's pretty awesome in my opinion. It's called The Code. ( www.theglenlivet.com/en-en/the-code ) I'd love to see a review of it if you guys can get your hands on a bottle. I had to order the bottle I have online.
Watching this video at .5 playback speed 😂
Why don't skeletons ever go trick or treating? Because they have no body to go with.
