  • In this video, we talk about the pros and cons of re-releasing old RC cars and does that impact the current market. We also unboxing the new Losi 1/16th vintage offering, the JRx2 Mini. Losi decided to change the scale from 1/10th to 1/16th to try and not impact on vintage prices of the original JRX2 cars. Do you think this was a good or bad idea?

      Exactly.
It blows my mind that anyone buys a RC kit for monetary gain.... It makes zero sense.
They'd be better of going to play on the stock market.
From my point of view, if you are not buying it just for enjoyment and the joy of having a desirable model, then the whole exercise seems pointless. It shouldn't matter what the market does once you get your car.
I love the reres because others can get a car that they couldn't get many years ago.
Plus parts become available again for the older cars
I would much rather see people driving their cars and getting a kick out of RC. (Had to throw that in there, Gavin! )

If it wasn’t for re-releases, I wouldn’t have gotten back into the hobby on a massive scale like I have this past year. I bought 30 Tamiya kits, 9 Kyosho kits, 1 Schumacher kit, and this Losi. I always prefer buying new, not used, so I really have no interest in old vintage ridiculously expensive kits from the 80s. If manufacturers don’t see an opportunity to keep their business up and running due to hurting the feelings of vintage sellers, well, that’s their own fault.

I think re-re's are great, and am building a small collection of them. I already have the Tamiya Hornet, and just got an RC10 Classic, and have a Tamiya Frog, and Wild One Blockhead Motor's Edition I just ordered from Ebay a few days ago on the way. These are the RCs I wanted most as a teen in the eighties, and it's great I can get them, and experience the nostalgia I missed out on, because I couldn't afford them at the time. I will run them, as RC cars are meant to be built, and run, instead of a means of making a fortune for greedy collectors. Plus it'll be fun comparing them to my much newer, and more high tech Losi Lasernut, to see how much the RC car hobby has changed, and advanced.

I recently "got back into the hobby" after a break. Was never a RC Car enthusiast in the 80s or 90s. For me a Re-Release like Schumacher (CAT XLS Masami) or Kyosho (Legendary Series) is the right sort of way to go: the classic design but with a slight modern twist (e.g. able to take brushless motor with an improved power train). I have the JRx2 Mini and I am liking it for a cool looking nice buggy to take out the back garden or driveway for a quick bash.

There are some MRC Tamiya kits I missed out on back in the day and I would love to pick them up again at a fair price now that I am an adult and have a good job. Deep down inside, you knew that the 1/10 is the one you wanted. Tamiya, Kyosho, Schumacher and even Team Associated had done a proper re-release. The tooling cost will not be that far off from the “mini” kit since they need to invest in new toolings anyway.
I don’t mind if they priced it higher. Most of the target customers are those in the 40s and 50s age bracket anyway. Most couldn’t afford them when they are young but am definitely sure that the buying power are leaps and bounds now. Wasted opportunity…

It's an interesting one, Team Losi is probably one of my favourite brands & as such I own a good few vintage Losi cars, including three JRX2s a JRXPro & a ProSE.... so for me the release of a 'mini' JRX2 brings a added dimension to my collection.... more so than if Horizon decided to re-release a 1/10th version. I do actually like the concept of these smaller scale buggies - (the NRC Projects RC10 inspired tribute cars really are little gems to behold!) - being smaller, they are something that you are perhaps more likely to pack up & take on holiday/trip away & you don't need so much space in which to enjoy them either - you could set up a little layout on the confines of a patio for example. As for the subject of should manufacturers re-release vintage kits & does it destroy the vintage market? I've never been one to purchase cars & parts to sell-on & make a profit (I rarely sell anything!) But being in the hobby building/restoring vintage R/C cars for around 14 years - I first got into RC10s, buying a gold pan & then a Worlds, then into vintage Schumacher & finding a TopCat, a ProCat & then rebuilding a Cougar, the same then with vintage Losis & the various 'JRX' buggies I have owned/built. Each of these cars I have searched for parts worldwide, sometimes waiting years to eventually find a single part to complete a build, the original wing buttons & front bumper for the TopCat I remember were particularly hard to find! So when a manufactuer then anounces the re-release of a buggy you've spent so long piecing the parts together to build (or collect spares to be able to justify running) you feel a little bit like 'oh' - was all that effort in vain? You do feel somewhat deflated & whilst still an 'original', for me a little of the 'specialness' is taken away from that original car. That said, i'm not against re-released vintage R/C cars & I do appreciate that they do give the opportunity for someone who so wants to re-live their youth to get the car of their dreams (you could argue that if they wanted it that bad you'd invest in the time & money on the original?) I do own a re-re TopCat -& recently i've been massively tempted by the Optima Mid re-release, given the prices originals go for & the upgrades that Kyosho have made - it makes a lot of sense.... but I think I might hang out for the LWB (The Optima I really hankered after as a teenager!)

I think re-releases can help the vintage market as it can bring availability to more spare parts. To keep everyone happy, the manufacturer can make the re-release stamped/molded with a special marking or with a slightly revision which would distinguish the new part from an original. This would help "protect" the collectors' "investment".

I love re release cars. Kyosho does the best job as it's easier to get replacement parts so I can actually run them and fix them if I have anything breaks. I think Tamiya could do a much better job of offering more spares for kits like the Egress. I do not run it because If I crack the body or anything, it's stupid money to replace it. So in a way the joy of the thing is never fully realised. As for 'collectors' and people who drive up the value of this stuff on Ebay. They deserve to loose their money as I am pretty sick of greed creeping into this happy hobby.

Of course it is not "destroying the market", any more so than fake rolexes destroy the luxury watch market. There will always be a special place for the genuine article. But with re-issues, you have people who can appreciate the designs and creativity of that era. (long before CAD-CAM). I have my original RC-10 on the Mantle, but I run my re-issue. What fun is the hobby when you have models you can't play with?

I enjoy the re-release that ups the engineering or provide hop-ups to address the weak points on the originals or update the car to run modern electronics and lipo power. This provides the differences to distinguish the new from the old. I say bring on the re-release as it only provides the opportunity to drive and enjoy the classics. I will not purchase this in the current scale, but if a re-release come in tenth scale, I will buy it for sure, hopefully set up to run modern electronics and lipo power.

Very interesting topic. I look at the re-res as now being able to get spare parts. I have a few original cars. My original CLodbuster with the body that has the chevy emblem in the grill, another old basket case clod that will be mainly used for parts and possibly used on a custom chassis, my original from 1988 Blackfoot with complete upgraded thorpe drive train, another OG Blackfoot but the body has a missing panel (that one is stock), my original Frog with custom upgrades like front shocks, etc, and a spare gray OG chassis for the frog, and a bunch of other cars. But I need spare parts for them. I have most of the bones so for me, the re-res are there to upgrade/fix my OG models. My Frog for example has that awful rear drivetrain that eats itself up in about 20 minutes and I would love to get the latest Frog re-re drivetrain upgrades that eliminate those issues. I just like the idea of a OG Frog with upgrades that would make it quite enjoyable. Those old hex-drive drivetrains were nothing but an exercise in frustration.
I also have an OG Team Associated RC10T with most of the bones there but I am missing a couple of the white suspension and the chassis. I am planning on getting a chassis off ebay. I would like to have a source of newer replacement white parts to keep the OG look.
Same with a few of my old earlier Traxxas stuff.
To me , re-res are very cool and give people like me with some of the OG stuff a chance to keep them running without spending HUGE money for rare one-off parts.

I know some will disagree but collectors collect because A.) They just want one and condition doesn’t matter. It brings back memories. B) Condition does matter. Mint original parts, nib kit that has survived. People pay premiums for them because they are scarce. No different from stamps, coins, cards or what have you. I get both sides. There are kits I’d like to have but I won’t pay for them. I’m ok with that. I think Losi did the right thing. Everyone can now have a jrx2 but the originals will continue to go up in value along with the parts. Had Associated Rc10 done this, original rc10’s would be worth more than they are.

I had several cars back in the 80's. I gave up on RC and moved on to other interests.
Fast forward 35 years, Im curious about the hobby again. I know technology and design have improved, but....
RC is not a huge market in my area, or withing 100miles ( 160 km or so ). Buying and dressing out a race grade buggy serves no purpose other than its existence. However, I can afford ALL the cars I wanted in the 80s, and that is appealing.
A Re-Re will never replace an original, and may open options to people like myself who are interested but dont want to smash a credit card on a hyper fast race kit just to bust around in the back yard ( garden? in UK? ).

I think they're good. Some people want old school RC. The re release RC allows people the ability to bash classic RC. They won't hurt the values if you change up the color of the plastic, or something like that.

Personally i only collect things that i really like and really connect with. If it goes up in value thats nice but not the only reason to have something. Plus the re releases usually get upgraded or improved in some way e.g. dogbones on frog, wild one and fox; upgraded drivetrain on kyoshos and schumachers etc.

Ready to run, or kit, this should have been tenth scale! I had an original back in the day, then I bought the jrxpro. I bought many spare parts, and modified my original so many times. At one time It was a carpet racing car, with my own mid motor conversion, and then it got a jg truck conversion, then it was converted into a jrxpro se with molded chassis. I have almost all the parts I need to make it original again, except the body, and the original chassis, which I cut up for parts fabrication, ouch! I didn't know that this car would become so special, or I would have preserved it. I would love to have a shiny new rerelease kit, or rtr, but in tenth scale!

I think maybe (hopefully) they did this on purpose... I'd love to see a OG scale Jrx series.. they could tweak some stuff to protect the original... Idk maybe it does make the original stuff more fun to search out and you don't have to worry about rereleased parts... But all I know is my search for parts is now a nightmare cause you have to see if it's for the original buggy's or the new smaller scale replicas ....
    Either way love you content..
I agree with you just come out with the original again... The purist will know the difference...and in the meantime everyone else will get to enjoy a buggy from that era that they may not have had the opportunity to have as a kid... I've gotten my my fair share of rereleased buggies along with having a pretty good losi collection from this era and have zero interest in this offering.....

I feel pretty lucky to still have my JRX Pro and RC10LSS, complete with boxes and manuals. I now have about 10 Losi buggies and Associated pan cars. None of them currently run; part of that is the lack of parts availability, and a lot of the parts that are out there are priced way too high for me to even consider buying them. Personally, I think rereleases are great, and I was among the disappointed to see this kit in 1/16th scale and not 1/10, but it is what it is. I agree that something is better than nothing, but if it was in the "proper" scale, I would have found a way to get one. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug!

As far as I am conserned I quite like the looks of the JRx2 rere. I do not mind that it is in a smaller scale, and prebuilt. I do however mind the electronics. Brushed motor, and a esc/receicer combo, is a bad choice. This should have come with a 1/16 brushless system with a dedicated, and changeable receiver, and a non proprietary battery solution. I wish for more prebuilt rere's, though with modern brushless electronics. Many interesting rc vehicle designs in the old days compared to today. And you cannot get a good looking buggy anymore, with the exception of the Traxxas Bandit. They all now seem to have a tub-chassi design looking more like truggies than buggies. The closest that I have found is the kyosho javelin, which seems good enough.

I think as long as they change the Re-Re just a bit to differentiate it from an original either update it to run modern power and batteries (like Kyosho) or what Team Associated did and sold original style kits for a very limited run but there’s still some identifiable things between an original and a Re-Re
My min JRX2 is mostly going to sit on the shelf (I will run it though) I’ve got the modern version the Mini B that I take to the track on practice days just to mess around with its just designed for that modern carpet surface I run on vs the Mini JRX2

It's a neat looking buggy, I had a JRX2 back in the day and it was a great buggy. I don't really think they care about lowering the market for the old JRX2's. I think they thought they could make more money with this car. Losi has made various attempts to get into the smaller scale market and most of the time they don't last long. I agree with you. I think a rerelease would've been better. I think they would've sold more and more parts. As far a rereleases go, I think they should be updated versions of some of the old cars. This would be especially true for Tamiya.

Losi is being silly. These aren't Picasso's their RC cars. Also as mentioned by Gavin Associated had already proven it helps not hurt the vintage market.
Now I'm not surprised as Losi has always made silly decisions.

Seriously ridiculous that anyone considers RC cars to be an investment class, the retained value of retro RC models should be a nice bonus if they hold up but in reality should have zero impact on ones enjoyment of the hobby. If you are worried about investment values maybe you should pay more attention to share markets and real estate (AND CRYPTO!).
The fact that Losi when deciding to go 1/16 have even considered the value of models they released more than 30 years ago just seems crazy, I can't imagine how this could have been a consideration in a serious business decision. This would have been a fantastic 1/10 model which I would have added to my Re-Re collection but at a 1/16 scale it feels like it sits well within the toy class (expensive toy class).
I feel that Kyosho have the right balance. All of their legend series kits seem to be available if you are willing to wait, they are not flooding hobby stores but they can be found. Then the upgrades they make to modernise the chassis are just brilliant and make the cars 1. Different from the originals. 2. Viable as real runners. 2. Still look brilliant on a shelf. I wish Tamiya would modernize their Re-Re's in this manner.

For me re-releases are a good thing, from what I have seen a lot of the older kits despite their obvious attractions had their flaws and given the choice would you for example go out and buy a real car knowing full well that the brakes were unreliable or buy a newer model knowing that the faults had been addressed. Plus we're not all made of money

Imagine how many vintage ones would have been dusted off and put back on the track if new spares were available?
I cant see it impacting the market much, if at all. Hardcore collectors are still going to want the genuine old school version over the re-release anyway.

I'm fine if they don't want to re-release an entire kit but it would be great if some spare parts were re-released. I know there are some 3D printed parts but new Team Losi parts for the JRX2 would be fantastic for those of us who run our vintage cars and need new parts either because of wear or breakage or both.

  • @mattigower1479

Good thinking Losi, but, yes, needs to be the 1:10 version pls. Yes I understand the collectors, who have their life savings and several mortgages committed to the preservation of an old toy car, but, for the rest of planet Earth, all the other boy-child-grown-ups need more great toys to play with. You see, there will be millions of big boys, who never had the chance to play with these as kids, either couldn't afford it, or, it simply wasn't invented yet. So, here's the kicker, there is a close parallel market in the world of real full size automotive, where a number of companies now supply oem parts for any number of older classic cars, typically 70s or 80s. Original numbers matching vehicles still retain their value, plus, they can access spare parts in case of any unfortunate failures. I see no reason why, the same cannot be done, with classic RC models from the same era. In case there is a sticking point here, consider, if the US (Japanese or whatever) manufacturers don't get on with it and do it, then for sure, there will very quickly be Asian knock-offs appearing which will potentially spoil the quality.

Re-releases drive up the vintage market prices; not dilute them. How many people are looking more at collecting original vintage since re-releases have been coming out? Also how about people that want to actually drive these as they were intended to be driven and not placed on a shelf forever. How many people want to share their childhood experience with their kids without breaking the bank. Now you can shelf your original and drive a re-release without feeling guilty.

Hmm, interesting question. For me, I don't care, I'm not bothered about getting one as they're still out of my price range. Besides which, most of them will be bought by 'collectors' who want to push the price up and then sell them on for a huge profit at a later date. I really don't seen how protecting the price of the original kits is in any way beneficial to the company that made them, they're not going to get anything out of 2nd hand sales. At the end of the day it's like any 'market', if people are prepared to pay for stuff then the stuff will sell, whether it's at a reasonable price or hugely inflated price......

I think the answer is easy, re-release is fine, if you don’t wanna destroy the aftermarket sales just make sure they are limited. Of course then you end up with another problem which is pre-order scalping market.
