- A start to finish demonstration of sanding and refinishing a parquet wood floor. (with good results)

Although this is one of the most comprehensive videos on parquet restoration, it is really only the visual aid to the written tutorial linked above. In the video I demonstrate sanding with the belt sander with 36grit (straight across the floor, important for parquet, again click the link above), round the edges with 36 grit. Then I continue up through 60 and 80 grit on the belt sander, 60 grit on the edge sander, 36 grit corner sanding before mass filling the floor. Then 100g diagonally with the belt sander, 80 grit with the edge sander, and a good thorough buffing with 80 grit under the buffer.
I then finish with (after vacuuming) with 1 coat of seal and 2 coats of lacquer.

Brilliant video mate! Going to start restoring my parquet floor in the coming months and have found your videos extremely informative
Beautiful. I watched your fail video first, so this was even more spectacular in comparison.
Thank you for sharing your hard earned experience and know-how with us!! Excellent content and commentary on video, including your replies in text. Truly nice work. Many thanks.
If it makes me feel great watching this video, how great must the 'sand man' feel once he finishes the job and he gets to see the fruits of all his hard work? SO SATISFYING! 😁 If only I had a floor that needed sanding.....
beautiful job done, man. didn't realize they made edgers that look like that. looks like it could get under cabinets real well
Real professional job, I really like the edger , especially in the tight slanted wall area, my edger is a silver line product and great except for the toe kick areas and to get the rest, I have to use a scraper to get in closer to the wall in some cases. Thank you.
Looks great mate - customer must have been thrilled
Excellent instructional video! It is a lot of sanding, requiring a lot of patience but that's what is necessary to get a professional finish. Well worth the effort! I have been working on my parquet floor and was feeling discouraged until I watched this. I don't have the sanders as shown. I am using an old Tennant 20"buffer sander , a belt sander for the edges and hand sanding the corners. I think the key is the prep especially the sequence of sanding grits, the thorough vacuuming of saw dust and the relaxing yet energizing music. This kind of project can be stressful the music will help with keeping a steady pace instead of trying to rush through it. I am going to get the right sanding grits, a trowel and some glue, I would like to get the music but don't know what CD. With the advice from you video I feel more confident about the success of my own project. Thank You!
I love your insight about working music. I am working with Madness at the moment, energetic feel good calming and quite appropriately named.
Thank you so so much, super clear instructions! 👍❤️
This was VERY helpful! Thanks! I'm less afraid to try doing this myself. Less, still not quite confident. I"ll watch this many more times as well as the link videos. Thanks!
Bom dia sou do Brasil. E faço este serviço aqui . fico admirado com o seu maquinário . Aqui em nossa maioria usamos maquinário da década de setenta. Parabéns
Fantastic job.
Great Great.... from Uruguay ...Really !!! regards Charlie
good job...nice video
In need of my floor doing so this is a massive help would want it lighter tho how would I do that
Great job
Thomas Collado thanks man
Wow that looks easy. I can do this. Hold my beer.
🤣
Great vid. Do you have any tips for what to do when there is a huge difference in appearance between different parts of the floor? I have inherited an old floor that has had a carpet on most if it for many years. Strangely (to me anyway) the areas that have been covered (and protected?) by the carpet are very faded and almost grey looking whereas the areas around the edge still have a rich golden/orange colour and a reasonable shine. It creates a very vivid line which cuts across some of the panels which really spoils the look of the floor. Any videos or suggestions? Will a good sanding solve all this? All help appreciated
Very informative...
Excellent video, thanks. I have a 1960s house with parquet floor throughout the ground floor. Previous owner removed all the cork expansion edging strips and covered the gaps with wooden fillets which looks horrible! We are decorating and I want to restore the floor to its original condition. Any idea where I can get suitable cork expansion strips? I managed to get some from Screwfix but they are too narrow and not thick enough ...
Hi Ben, we recently installed parquet floor and followed your video I’m so impressed W this the overall result but we did notice maybe from the rented belt sander the odd line from that machine it only showed when we used the royl 2k oil clear to finish do you recommend we go over these parts by hand? Thanks for your advice, kelly
Excellent video!!
Quick question - I want to refinish my floors in my unit and was wondering how many of each grit paper would I need to cover approximately 85 square meters?
Looks like a complete ballache! lucky for me i have 63M^2 to do very soon, just to experience the level of ache in the region of the ball!
Excellent
Nice work good 👍 luck
Great video. How many sheets of sandpaper would you have used on this floor? Thanks
Every time I start sanding the paper rips off the bottom any tips looked all over for a video that actually shows starting the sander
Great video. Just wondering can the 80 grit buffering be skipped since you have already did the 100 grit with the belt sander. Asking for me.
Hi have you got a video of laying parquet flooring how to start etc james THANKS
What you filling the gaps with
I am looking to redo my floor and i wanted to know how long this process takes? how long after the floor filler to sand?
Loved the summary commentary at the end, you sounded very similar to Nathan Lane. What lacquer / oil do you use, you seem to be second coating the same day, I might be wrong of course...
Cheers!
Awesome video! How do you deal with a squeaky parquet floor?
Hi, I have discovered a piquet flooring under my carpet. There are hundreds of staples where the underlay has been put down, will this fill the holes after the staples have been removed? Thanks Andy
what is the best wood Filler and laquour called please. I am gonna attempt to do this...great video
Awesome video. Really helpful! Are you sanding in different directions with the belt sander between different grits? Does that achieve a smoother finish? Thanks.
Hi Ben, I have quiet uneven hard wood parquet floor what will be the best sander to hire please?
Where can you hirer that sander need my floor doing
I liked how it looked after sanding. Do u have to have that gloss finish. I currently have it . Dont like it. Can one have the matte finish?
Great video and thanks for the tips - we have 2 lines of black beading around the edge of our parquet flooring - how would you suggest when filling with the sawdust we deal with these decorative edges so as not to loose them or just have them covered in the sawdust colour ?
Sounds like a very nice floor! I wouldn't worry about it, just fill the floor, sand off the filler with that final grit and it should be fine. (Just act like it's not there)
A floor as nice as that should really have a pro on it, to do it justice
Hi, please could you let me know what product the filler is that you are dragging across the floor after the first rounds of sanding? Thanks in advance
Hello what kind of filler you are using?or how can I make my own filler
So you don't stain the floor? You just use lacquer? Please explain I'm trying to do my parquet floor and it is a light color and I want the same color.
Staining parquet is not for the faint of heart, even for pro's! This wood was iroko (i think) which is an exotic wood that has a lot of natural colour. You could consider using hardwax oil which can give it a darker, richer tone without having to stain. You can of course buff in oil colours, but again this is skillful work.
Hey mate i love the look when its just sanded on the oak parquet. Which oil can I use to keep the just sanded (matte) look? Thanks pal
Hi Ben! Great video! I prefer the color of the wood before lacquering (pale instead of colorfull). Is there a way to lacquer it but keeping that pale colour? Thank you very much!
Just apply clear top coat ?
If you are using a regular buffer. What do you use to sand?
can you actually stain parquet before applying the top coat/s please? Is there a method to do that. I have tried a floor in the past with Merrells stain and did not come out very nice due to the grains running in a diff direction. Thanks for the first reply BTW much obliged
8:42 - Do you need to stain the floor prior to the lacquering? Some areas of the floor that I'm contemplating sanding have faded back to a whitish colour vs the surrounding wood? Any advice appreciated :-) cheers.
you should explain the purpose of the different grits. thnks
Damn that looks good! Next step is to kill the red walls and dark trim! Lighten it up!
can you tell me please where did u got buffer with vacum or brand... where i can buy it or found please )))
Hi Ben, what product do you use/ recommend for filler, lacquer etc? thanks
What are you using to do the buffing ?
hi, with herringbone, how do you sand with the grain? I see you go diagonal, but the belt sander could potentially damage the grain. Does the rotating polisher remove these much like a random orbit sander?
yes, read the article on the website! ;)
잘 보고 가요 ^&^
Brilliant tutorial, can you recommend a water-based, quick drying satin lacquer. I've got a bar with Parkett flooring and we want to renovate overnight, so we can reopen the following day. If that's achievable!!! Than you.
Theres a free products guide on the website! check it out. 12 hours is enough for use. Nothing is more damaging than broken bottles + alcohol, try to clean it up as soon as possible and dont let people trample it in.
Good video, is one coat of lacquer enough for most floors?
what produck must be used
Nice work mate . I use the same gear here in NZ .why do ya use the 80 grit buffer after using 100 grit on the Hummel. Is that to take out any imperfections. Cheers
2rich4yamate yeah exactly, 80 grit buffer is far far smoother than even 120 grit hummel, the buffing smooths out the edges and removes the scratches from the sander, if you then go up to 100 grit you basically have a floor like glass. Generally i just quickly run over with the 80 grit again once its blunt, that basically 100 grit. In my experience you go any smoother and you start closing the grain too much for the finish to hold
2rich4yamate hi mate i am from NZ . Is it possible if you can teach me how to do floor sanding . As i am really keen to start a floor sanding biz in Auckland.
Love the buffer. Does it have its own vacuum attached to it? Where did you buy yours because I live in the USA
Can I ask how long it took?
omg that edger is badass! What is that? And wow what an amazing finish!!
+Scott Greenwood Bona Edge XL, it is a beaut
Its a radiator machine. or duckbilled edger we call it around here. gets under cabinets and radiators extremely well.
Cool video, I love UA-cam university
Is that fast forwarded using the belt sander or do you actually go that speed
that's the real speed
Should the herringbone parquet be sanded diagonally following the the natural wood grain?
kololi Jani ideally yes, unfortunately that's impossible because the grain is going in 2 different directions. Click the link in the description and read the article
How much do you charge for a sqm, $60? It will take a week to finish one 100sqm house.
How did it take ?
Great video what does the mass filling process involve or mean?
Mark Gowans mixing a ratio of the collected fine sanding dust with a filler such as lecol and pushing it into the gaps like grouting. You get the dust from one of the last higher grit passes. No expert been meaning to do this myself, it’s been put back for a good 5 years
I have a question. Why don't you do 60edging right after 60 belt sanding? Wouldn't it sand off adjacent floor which is done with 80??
Did I see that wrong or did you switch the direction you were belt sanding the floor? Would a person do this on regular hardwood floors too? I always thought going across the grain was a no-no. Help?!
Hello, wanted to ask for a massif flooring after years of wear and tear of the floor, approximately how many milimeters of layer does it remove from the floor while sanding and polishing? Thank you....
it shouldn't take more than 2mm maybe 3 if there are a lot of deep scratches, but usually its 1-2mm. It all depends on the wear and dear, If its flat and smooth but the surface looks very worn, it may only need 0.5-1mm removed.
It was helpful, but it would have been good to know why you used the different type of sander ( grit) and you mass fill any the type of roller you use, thing like that would have help more 👍but the floor looks amazing.
You are a beast! How much would you charge now to do that amount of area and same condition floor?
30-40£ per metre
Hi mate, Fantastic vids. 1) do you jump straight from g60 to g100? 2) are you using G60 dust for fill? 3) the buff, is it a cleaning pad or actually sand paper? Currently bodging soild oak floor in my house, wish i never started 😂😂😂
If i have chipped wood in the parquet, will the wood filler fill it and be noticeable after applying the lacquer? I have pretty big chips in the wood.
nonh8nsk8r in terms of colour, its pretty unnoticable unless you look for them close up, unfortunately because the filler is so porous, lacquer and other finishes just soak into it so it never forms a smooth shiney surface like the rest of the wood. Its still the best thing you can do, unless you can take blocks from under the stairs or in a cupboard and use them for the damaged blocks
***** Thank you for the quick reply! I think I'll give it a go!
Hi Ben, i'm laying a reclaimed parquet floor this week :O
From your experience how long would you say from start to finish that it generally takes? My floor and blocks are prepared (blocks 30cm x 7.7cm room 24m2). I'll be using Lecol 5500 to lay the blocks in a double herringbone pattern (providing the wife doesn't change her mind). Any information would be appreciated :)
Great videos, very informative :)
Wade Deacon M Philcock Glad to hear you are using Lecol 5500, that's what I use, its great for melting and mixing with the bitumen on the reclaimed blocks. I know its late now, but my advice would have been get your centre line perfect, first and leave that over night, then fit the rest. Once done leave for 5 days to dry.
***** Hi Ben,
thanks for the info. I did exactly that, made a mitre joint from 2 lengths of wood and screwed it to the floor to allow me to get all of the pieces perfectly straight and gave me something to push against. left that overnight and spent the next 2 days laying the pieces and doing the border and cuts (very time consuming!). That was finished on Friday evening (29th) and have a sander and edger booked for this weekend and some Lecol 7500 for the filling stage so i'll have to review your other video on filling the gaps again.
Wade Deacon M Philcock This sounds so awesome! Have you been taking pictures throughout? I'd love to see them when you are done. Feel free to contact me on the ask me a question tab of the website.
Good advice on the centre line - The most important piece is always the 1st piece on any floor, whether parquet blocks, herringbone, solid floors or laminate.
Do you sand the lacquer after it's applied?
yes before the final coat
can you stain parquet floor please? Is there a method to do that?
Yes you can with the appropriate sand paper and buff processes you can definitely have it stained
Just a quick one for u, lets say u have a continuous wooden floor running through each doorway into say 4/5 rooms, does it all have to be lacquered at the same time? Or can u stop at each door way, i am just thinking if u did stop at each doorway there would be a line where the 2 lacquers meet???
Is it herringbone all the way through or boards? If it’s boards you can stop at the doorways that have the boards running across the doorway, put tape down against the line, lacquer up to it then pull up the tape and start elsewhere. The rooms with boards running through, you can’t stop at, which makes it harder but this should still help to make things easier. If it’s herringbone, it’s a lot tougher, unless there is a border, allowing you to stop at the doors.
@@HowToSandAFloor i see thanks thats clears that, looking forward to new videos
Have you got any parquet left I think am going to run out ? Just thought 💭 I’d ask as you might do by chance x
Oh, is this buffer you're using, a predecessor to the Woodworker T2: Numatic NuPower 1500W Buffing Machine?
I'd have to aquire and or hire the maschines you would need for teaching me by the way.
maybe 6 years after you posted but i have bought 50 sq metre's of english oak parquet that was ripped from the floor of a school gym. i intend to use lecol 5500 to apply the parquet. one question: how long will it take to sand 50 sq metre's and what filling compounds do you recommend? and i was going to use libron oil to finish?
barry smith it’s all on my website
@@HowToSandAFloor cheers. will look for it now. or are you local to kidderminster, worcestershire?
Hi, ignorant DIYer here. Why did you go diagonal for your 100 grit pass with drum sander? Wouldn't the horizontal boards get sanded more aggressively than the vertical boards due to some being sanded with the grain and other across the grain? I thought for herringbone boards should be sanded at a 45 degree angle to ensure even sanding, as you did for the other grits.
They could have made those edge sanders a little easier on the back couldn't they?
pbaylis1 maybe one day! There is one where you can stand up but that does my back in even more. While it looks bad, I have spent entire days doing this and while im stiff at the end of the day, it does really cause problems
I found the best way to use the edger is to buy one of those work stools on wheels !!! They work great!!! I honestly don't think I would run the 7in edger with out a shop stool lol
How much to do this to my floor I’m in Sheffield roughly same size ?
About 2k+VAT
Is the corner sanding with the 36 grit before or after mass filling?
Before 😀
What's a real cost to do that herringbone , I got a kitchen and living room connected , some scratches by the back door. More a parkay with lots of squares 4 in each square , Sand , fill and refinish , square foot price
usually $1.00 a square foot just for the sanding
Check out my latest video matey and look the sander I used! I went from 24 all the way up to 150 grit on the Ipe wood ! And tomorrow after I apply two coats of prime bona I will hand sand with 150 then apply apply two coats of the bona finish ! So tomorrow prime and Friday the finish! I also apply the bona with the trimming pad! It's 300 bucks the 5L bottle here in Rio so I got to save!
Looks like a very nice wood and a job well done!
Hi mate I’m close to finishing laying my parquet, it’s reclaimed and will probably need 2mm sanding off in some places it’s still got varnish and lacquer on some tiles. The room is 10 squared metres how many sanding sheets would I need roughly for the floor sander and the edge sander? Thanks
It depends what the floor is coated is and what wood it is, I would say minimum 3 36g sheets then 1 50/60 1x80 1x100 and 1x120. Maybe 10 36 edger disks to be safe and 5or 6 of each grit after. Every floor takes a different amount.
Thank you for the reply bud. It’s iroko wood pretty old came out of an old mental hospital in Teeside. It’s got varnish on it and lacquer some of it peeling off. Kept me busy whilst on furlough thanks for the videos they’ve really helped!
I’ve used lecol 5500 how long would you wait before sanding it down?
Carl Ruddick depends how thick you’ve put it down and the conditions of the area. I’ve had that stuff still be wet after a weekend. Usually next day is fine., if you can give it a full 36-48 hours that’s ideal, get a fan going blowing at the floor.
How To Sand A Floor thanks for the advice appreciate it
You finished off with 80 grit on the buffer? Not higher? Thanks.
Yes. I was using a particularly smooth abrasive and I was lacquering with a solvent based primer, so much less grain pop. Tbh finishing at 80g is a little hacky. Minimum 100g for natural and 120 for staining
How To Sand A Floor makes sense if you’re not staining and if you’re smooth AF!
Get yourself a Trio dude...that buffer you have can be used for Cut back duties...Can't remember last time I used an edger more than once...my RO150 does the rrst
Way too much sanding IMO. But your procedure is by the book.
Peace
You’re bang on. Now I have a trio (for 5 years) and I edge once then rotex 👌🏻
@@HowToSandAFloor don't know if you know but you can double weight the Trio ..Don't know what your timber species are like over tgere but I always finish on Red abrasives as the blue Zirconias can leave weird scratch patterns , especially if you don't clean the Trios filter, that inbuilt spin filter cleaner starts doing fuk after a few years...you have to take it out and hit the bottom or top with a piece floor board until dust stops dropping out
All the best
Why did you laqure the floor in this outdated reddish tint?
Please let me know, how I may contact you, in order for perhaps, an unusial setting, for lessons from you, not in your exact part of our tiny globe. Perhaps unusual, but maybe a way that you and your family, may spend time out of your immediate location.
