This video brings back memories. My wife and i did our floors in our new house a few years back. It was definitely more work than i expected. After it was all said and done, i wish i had just hired the pros. If your thinking of doing this as a first timer i'd suggest giving some serious thought to it. In the end we didn't save as much as we thought we would and the work was tedious. Sanding imperfections don't show up until you apply the finish and then you have to redo that area. If your not careful you can ruin your floors.
I just started with the Sq buffer sander, spent all day on 1 room without finishing it. Just watched this video and will rent the right sander! Thanks for the confidence.
Always sand diagonally because it prevents the sander from creating waves. Sanding with the grain alon without crossing the floor again diagonally is a no go professionally speaking. You won’t see it until you apply the stain. It may look flat but it snot.
That is a great tip, but only if your floors are already cupped. Ours were very flat so diagonal wasn't necessary. We already have applied the stain/top coat and the floor is perfectly flat
How dusty it can be for the rest of the house? I’m asking because I’m doing the sanding before moving to my house, but just on the main floor. It’s a townhouse, but I’m wondering if the dust it will be really bad for the upstairs rooms. How bad the cleaning part it will be?
I have a question for you! My flooring was laid at an angle. What direction would you sand the flooring? Do you go with the angle or just run the sander in a straight line?
Use osculating tool with sanding attachment should be easy for the corners! So glad you encourage Bianca to try scary power tools! You go girl, woman can be as handy!
I just redid two large floors myself after watching a bunch of UA-cam videos. It made me feel better to know it took you 5 days to sand everything working together, it took me two to sand both of mine. It looks great! The color change is worth it.
My wife and I are going to be sanding our hardwood flooring soon and this video is giving me complete confidence that we can do it. Your floors turned out awesome! Nice job!
Si no los hace un profesional te va a quedar mal, te van a quedar paradas por todo el suelo y no vas a saber barnizarlo tampoco, no seas rata y gastate el dinero
It was really a wise move for me to purchase a sander through Home Depot which I did get used for $700. I know this sander it’s a triple head sander retail for about $3000. It was money well spent because it took quite a while to do two houses and I don’t think I could rent it for seven hundred bucks. If you could buy one used that’s the best thing to do.
Great video mate, I refurbish tram floors for a job,the edge sander can be quite aggressive but is my preferred weapon of choice I use 36 and 80 grid !!!!
Great video! i'm getting ready to do our floors for my first time also, I'm not looking for perfection so i hope i can just use 2 grit levels, I'll see how it goes lol
Thanks for the real life video! Hubs and I are about to embark on the same project and it’s a bit daunting when so many pros talk about how it isn’t a good DIY project. This gave me hope! 😅 About to go find your finish video!
Good job guys! My cuz and I just bought my sisters house to flip bit sadly she screwed up her once nice hardwood floors by by putting a darker coffee finish over the lovely amber finish it had when dad bought her house. She did it herself and the results are horrendous. She did the work during the plandemic era! I am a retired constuctioneer and have over 35 years in in all trades except re-finishing hardwood floors. Your videos has given me hope in my ability to take this task on!
Well done guys, it looks mint. Here in the UK I had the same project at home, only the hiring company let me down and never had any stock when I had the time to do this job. Next time then. Definitely you gave me some tips so thanks.
When you keep a pile of the dust and you mix it with wood glue you can fill all the little holes and the cracks between the individual boards. This way your self made filler will have the exact same color as your base floor. Unfortunately you will have to pass again with a square sander after this. And you have to make sure your floor finish will stick to the wood glue
wow, great job. After watching this I feel like the company I hired to redo my floors skipped a couple steps. It was a while ago and it was the Monday after Super Bowl. All I could smell off them was beer. Oh well, live and learn!
Great job explaining steps, it would help if you spell out all costs to rent, sand papers, how many sq. ft, how many bed room, how many hours it took to do sending?, I am trying to decide if it is worth for me to do myself vs hiring someone
Do you mind sharing what type of sealer you used for the floors? Also what steps did you take after finishing sanding? I am going to refinish my 50 years old wooden floor and I want to retain the natural wood finish. Great vedio and was very helpful!!
You should check out the previous video where we tore out all the carpet. In that video, we took out all the shoe molding so we had more margin when sanding up against the walls. We will reinstall new shoe molding after the floors are done 😁
"I did upper body today!" This looks awesome and like a TON of work, you made it look doable but also realistic on how much time it would take haha See ya next week, I do NOT want to be on Olive's bad side.
The square buff does not do a good job of removing old finish, and it takes a long time to make any progress. The drum sander looks scary, but you can practice with 100 grit sandpaper ( like in the video), and you can get used to sanding without ruining the floor.
I'm not happy! How can you make us wait so long to see what the end result looks like!...Lol Can't wait though. You should try some baking soda to get rid of those marks on the floor...that should do the trick. Call it Project Flip (For flipping the house) Anyway, the floors look great!

Great job but youtube wood furniture restoration vid. You can apply a solution to get rid of stains and also wet wood to raise the grain so you can sand off imperfections

You should be going diagonal, not with the grain and you should only sand when moving backwards, don't allow it to sand moving forward. This is why you had to use so much sand paper. You were dragging material across the entirety of the belt. This doesn't happen when moving backwards. Super incorrect video which could make thousands of people finish their floors incorrectly.
You didn’t need to do all that. The floors didn’t look bad at all. You just could have buffed it up a little and reapplied the finish. There are ways to tell what finish was there previously.

“Project Home Sweet Home”!
@6:27 your edging backwards, left to tight on the edger at all time. yes you can run edger on stairs, not easy though.
I enjoyed this vlog , love the live music 🎶
Would you recommend doing the edges first?
Did you try Oxalic acid to try to lighten stains in the flooring? Furniture restorers use it and often stains disappear or lighten significantly.
We did not, thanks for the tip!
Did you consider removing all the floor trim before sanding? It would have helped you get closer to the walls.
You should check out the previous video where we tore out all the carpet. In that video, we took out all the shoe molding so we had more margin when sanding up against the walls. We will reinstall new shoe molding after the floors are done 😁
There should be no need for that. A proper setup edger should get you right up to the trim.

What was the square footage of this project? Trying to figure out how long to rent the equipment?
This was about 1,000sqft of flooring
Question! Hope you see this! Are your floors red oak or white? Did you know that before starting? Thanks?
Our floors are red oak. Given how orange they were, we knew this before we started. White oak has a much lighter appearance
Quick question: Why don’t you just use square sander for the whole floor? Sorry, I’m completely new to this.
It’s not aggressive enough. It would take much longer to sand through the grits. The square buff sander is just used as a finishing pass
I did my floor yesterday. But I didn't use a professional sander.
Wow! Great job! How did that go?
I am wondering whether I can directly use square buff sander with 60, 80 and 100 grit instead of using drum sander?
The square buff does not do a good job of removing old finish, and it takes a long time to make any progress. The drum sander looks scary, but you can practice with 100 grit sandpaper ( like in the video), and you can get used to sanding without ruining the floor.
How far did you get on average with each edge sanding pad? Thanks
I’m with Bianca, I wouldn’t want to use that drum sander 😅 floors look great though!

So. Much. Work! It was worth it, love the floors! You could try a little bleach in the discolored areas.

How did you sand the bullnose on the stairs?
Not that it matters but no one ever lowers the handle on that square buffer polisher, they just leave it upright😅
Nice Job

How many square feet does a piece sand paper cover for buffing?
It varies but roughly 200-300sqft
