- Let's refinish these floors! We were lucky enough to find hardwood under all the carpet in our home in the last episode. In this video, we go through the process and all the steps on how to properly refinish your hardwood floors. Just as a heads up there is a LOT of sanding haha! We use some new and powerful tools to accomplish the task and we are super excited to apply the finish to these floors next time!
Thank you for watching and hopefully you found the video helpful!

Awesome video!! So so satisfying, watching that sander go back-and-forth! Can’t wait to see the floors finished! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! We're excited to show you the finished floors soon!
Another great video! These floors look awesome. Nice to see you both tag teaming the work! Excited for more.
Thank you!! Many hands make light work!
Great job and video. Informative and encouraging About to try it myself on our 25 year old hardwood floors.
This was so satisfying to watch from beginning to end. Great job, it looked like hard work!
Glad you enjoyed it!! It was a lot of sweat equity 😂
Great job proud of you guys making your vision come to life
Thanks so much!! It’s so exciting to see the house transform into our dream home 😁
I loved this video,, you guys explain everything so well. The best video I have seen on refinishing! Thank you so much 🥰
Thank you so much!! Glad you found it helpful 😁
Nice job. Been doing it for over 20 years and you did great. Nice to see people taking on projects and crushing it.
Thank you so much, we really appreciate it!
How dusty it can be for the rest of the house? I’m asking because I’m doing the sanding before moving to my house, but just on the main floor. It’s a townhouse, but I’m wondering if the dust it will be really bad for the upstairs rooms. How bad the cleaning part it will be?
Btw, good job!!!
@@elizaangelim7533 It is not horrible, but I would just block off the entrance to the upstairs with some painter's plastic to be sure
I just started with the Sq buffer sander, spent all day on 1 room without finishing it. Just watched this video and will rent the right sander! Thanks for the confidence.
Great video as always. Can't wait to see more!
Thank you so much! Next video comes out this Saturday 😁
Well done guys, it looks mint. Here in the UK I had the same project at home, only the hiring company let me down and never had any stock when I had the time to do this job. Next time then. Definitely you gave me some tips so thanks.
What a tease! Can't wait to see the finished product next week.
The video was getting a little long haha! Excited to show you the finished product 😁
Love the video. You guys have become my favorite channel for this sort of stuff.
Glad you enjoy it! And thank you so much, we really appreciate it ☺️
So glad to see that you used the drum sander and edger. I see so many people use the flat orbital sander as the main sander.
It really sped up the process!
Congrats for your new house guys!!!
Thank you!!
My wife and I are going to be sanding our hardwood flooring soon and this video is giving me complete confidence that we can do it. Your floors turned out awesome! Nice job!
Si no los hace un profesional te va a quedar mal, te van a quedar paradas por todo el suelo y no vas a saber barnizarlo tampoco, no seas rata y gastate el dinero
Use osculating tool with sanding attachment should be easy for the corners! So glad you encourage Bianca to try scary power tools! You go girl, woman can be as handy!
We actually tried that, but the sand paper gummed up so fast. We found the paint scraper was more efficient. And thanks for the encouragement!
The floor looks so beautiful. My back hurts just seeing you guys doing all of this.
Thank you!! Our backs were definitely sore after this project 😅
Good job!
Thank you!!
This video brings back memories. My wife and i did our floors in our new house a few years back. It was definitely more work than i expected. After it was all said and done, i wish i had just hired the pros. If your thinking of doing this as a first timer i'd suggest giving some serious thought to it. In the end we didn't save as much as we thought we would and the work was tedious. Sanding imperfections don't show up until you apply the finish and then you have to redo that area. If your not careful you can ruin your floors.
This is super helpful, thanks! About to attempt for my house. Do you have a consumables breakdown for how much sand paper, tack cloth, etc you used?
Thanks, I only had one room to do, and your video was super helpful. I found the edging work to be harder arms workout. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! The edger is not fun 😅
Great video mate, I refurbish tram floors for a job,the edge sander can be quite aggressive but is my preferred weapon of choice I use 36 and 80 grid !!!!
Thank you!! Means a lot coming from a pro! The edger was much harder to control than I realized haha - took a toll on the back 😂
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Nice Job
Thanks!
Your hard work will pay off in the end!
We hope so 😅
I just redid two large floors myself after watching a bunch of UA-cam videos. It made me feel better to know it took you 5 days to sand everything working together, it took me two to sand both of mine. It looks great! The color change is worth it.
Are these two really psycho enough to think they can do something for the first time...and then think they are capable of teaching the world?
“Project Home Sweet Home”!
Great video! Would you mind providing a cost breakdown?
Great video! i'm getting ready to do our floors for my first time also, I'm not looking for perfection so i hope i can just use 2 grit levels, I'll see how it goes lol
Thanks! Good luck 😁
"I did upper body today!" This looks awesome and like a TON of work, you made it look doable but also realistic on how much time it would take haha
See ya next week, I do NOT want to be on Olive's bad side.
Haha! Thank you 😊 We’re excited to show you the finished result
Always sand diagonally because it prevents the sander from creating waves. Sanding with the grain alon without crossing the floor again diagonally is a no go professionally speaking. You won’t see it until you apply the stain. It may look flat but it snot.
That is a great tip, but only if your floors are already cupped. Ours were very flat so diagonal wasn't necessary. We already have applied the stain/top coat and the floor is perfectly flat
@@GoldenKeyDesign👍Great work then.
Would you recommend doing the edges first?
When you keep a pile of the dust and you mix it with wood glue you can fill all the little holes and the cracks between the individual boards. This way your self made filler will have the exact same color as your base floor.
Unfortunately you will have to pass again with a square sander after this. And you have to make sure your floor finish will stick to the wood glue
I used the saw dust trick when plugging the few larger holes in the living room. Works great!
wow, great job. After watching this I feel like the company I hired to redo my floors skipped a couple steps. It was a while ago and it was the Monday after Super Bowl. All I could smell off them was beer. Oh well, live and learn!
Thank you so much! I’m sorry to hear that 😔
Great job!
Man I love red oak, so much better looking than white oak
Thank you so much! It turned out better than expected 😁
@HowToSandAFloor look who showed up
Great job explaining steps, it would help if you spell out all costs to rent, sand papers, how many sq. ft, how many bed room, how many hours it took to do sending?, I am trying to decide if it is worth for me to do myself vs hiring someone
Do you mind sharing what type of sealer you used for the floors? Also what steps did you take after finishing sanding? I am going to refinish my 50 years old wooden floor and I want to retain the natural wood finish. Great vedio and was very helpful!!
Check out the next video in the series. It was posted just after this one. We go into detail on the staining/finishing process 😁
It was really a wise move for me to purchase a sander through Home Depot which I did get used for $700. I know this sander it’s a triple head sander retail for about $3000. It was money well spent because it took quite a while to do two houses and I don’t think I could rent it for seven hundred bucks. If you could buy one used that’s the best thing to do.
Nice! That's a great price
Curious why you need both the belt and square sander?
So. Much. Work! It was worth it, love the floors! You could try a little bleach in the discolored areas.
It was a lot of sweat equity 😅 Thank you so much, and great tip!
Did you try Oxalic acid to try to lighten stains in the flooring? Furniture restorers use it and often stains disappear or lighten significantly.
We did not, thanks for the tip!
How far did you get on average with each edge sanding pad? Thanks
How did you sand the bullnose on the stairs?
What was the square footage of this project? Trying to figure out how long to rent the equipment?
This was about 1,000sqft of flooring
I’m with Bianca, I wouldn’t want to use that drum sander 😅 floors look great though!
Thunk
😊
Funny 😆
😂 I had to make sure she tried it at least once!! Thank you 😁
Great job but youtube wood furniture restoration vid. You can apply a solution to get rid of stains and also wet wood to raise the grain so you can sand off imperfections
Thanks for the tip!
Did you consider removing all the floor trim before sanding? It would have helped you get closer to the walls.
You should check out the previous video where we tore out all the carpet. In that video, we took out all the shoe molding so we had more margin when sanding up against the walls. We will reinstall new shoe molding after the floors are done 😁
There should be no need for that. A proper setup edger should get you right up to the trim.
Quick question: Why don’t you just use square sander for the whole floor? Sorry, I’m completely new to this.
It’s not aggressive enough. It would take much longer to sand through the grits. The square buff sander is just used as a finishing pass
@6:27 your edging backwards, left to tight on the edger at all time. yes you can run edger on stairs, not easy though.
you're lucky to have samoan girl very strong!!!
Not sure if I missed it, did you mention how many square feet total?
This was roughly 1,000sqft
@@GoldenKeyDesign Mahalo!
Question! Hope you see this! Are your floors red oak or white? Did you know that before starting? Thanks?
Our floors are red oak. Given how orange they were, we knew this before we started. White oak has a much lighter appearance
How many square feet does a piece sand paper cover for buffing?
It varies but roughly 200-300sqft
@@GoldenKeyDesign Thank you, I appreciate. You have inspired me to finish my floor.
I'm not happy! How can you make us wait so long to see what the end result looks like!...Lol Can't wait though. You should try some baking soda to get rid of those marks on the floor...that should do the trick. Call it Project Flip (For flipping the house) Anyway, the floors look great!
Haha! Thanks for the tip!
We need some more lore to come up with a name 😛
Haha!
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you!!
That's not a sander that's a toy 😂 I. I'm just messing with you men alot people use that for me is way to light I prefer my HUMMEL ALL DAY LONG ..well congrats you guys looks good
HOLA CHICOS 🙋 POR FAVOR LOS NUMEROS EN SECUENCIAS DE LAS LIJAS QUE USARON EN LAS MAQUINAS , QUIERO INVENTAR UN POCO GRACIAS.👍

I could not really tell during the time-lapse portion, but, during the 100-grit test, it did not appear that you lowered the drum as you backed up.
Did you?
Correct, I only lowered the drum when moving forward. I found it was hard to control if you lowered it while moving backward
@@GoldenKeyDesign Yeah, I get it. Reversing the drum is more aggressive, so, if you are not comfortable, you could ruin your floor.
As someone who specializes in the refinishing and installation of hardwood flooring, this made my soul hurt.
Hater
Це гарні підлоги. Переконайтеся, що ви не зіпсували їх! Я б не довірив Б’янці ці машини!
Thank you so much 😂
This is the most complicated process i have seen
The very first thing you did was wrong. You should go diagonal.
The beginning floors looked fine. LOL, what's with this new trend of dumping time and money into things that aren't even close to being worn down?
Sorry for the really inappropriate comment but when as I usually like wood work and "Victoria Secret" girls then wood work and Bianca is also really hot!
What a 🐈⬛. He made his wife pick up the heavy end and carry it up the, stairs. Wtf
You should be going diagonal, not with the grain and you should only sand when moving backwards, don't allow it to sand moving forward. This is why you had to use so much sand paper. You were dragging material across the entirety of the belt. This doesn't happen when moving backwards. Super incorrect video which could make thousands of people finish their floors incorrectly.
You can rough off on a slight bias but if you were to sand completely diagonal by you have to make sure to straighten it out
No don't sand backwards. Bad idea... Always sand going forward
Yeah, no you don't. Tell me you don't know how to do floors more.@@elijahboi751
Yeah and do a subpar job
@@jonneymendoza
@@mrrooster4876 your the first that has ever said to sand backwards
You didn’t need to do all that. The floors didn’t look bad at all. You just could have buffed it up a little and reapplied the finish. There are ways to tell what finish was there previously.
i know nothing about refinshing floors but i thought the same thing
Yeah, there’s nothing fun about edging.
Does Bianca have a single sister?
guarantee you won't be doing that again. and you're going to pay the professional next time
It was a lot of work but we were able to save a ton of money on labor. We would do it again!
that's a lie you will not do it again . make another video of it then. second you did not save thousands of dollars maybe a couple hundreds but definitely not thousand
@@GoldenKeyDesign
When we have another 1,000sqft of hardwood to refinish I will let you know. The going rate for 3 grit passes and using Bona finishes is a minimum of $6/sqft and we got quotes close to $8/sqft. So even at $6/sqft we saved $4k. Not sure how you are adding up your numbers
Ha ha your wife did a better job than you with edger, you have to start on the left and go to the right. Anyway, sanding wood floors is not for DIY.
I think our floors came out great, but thanks for the feedback
what a waste of time
refinishing floors already in good condition
I don’t agree with sanding floors that clean as well. But it’s not our home it’s theirs.
