I hope you continue to show your kitties to us. My husband and I are in our 80’s and cannot have them where we live now. We both miss them so much. You are so kind to occasionally give us a glimpse of the love they give you. I’m a plant lover too. Donna

Most definitely! I love having them show up on camera. Sometimes I cut them out depending on the video but I love that they come to see me film all the time and want to help out haha.

Melissa, There are a ton of us just really learning about moss poles. Thank you for taking the time to start at the begaining and giving details even the little details on the flaps. Learning the watering process so they do not dry out has been a challenge for me. They are so hard to rehydrate. I usually garden outside so this has been a new thing for me growing my house plants. If you seen my jews outside you would faint. It is in a 15 gallon pot. Not no root rot. It is huge. I bring inside in the winter and out she goes in the spring. IT is out of control. I have to cut back several times. No browning in the summer or anything. I think I have to repot next year. That will be a job for sure.

They are gorgeous plants and that is amazing to have it be that huge!! Great job on growing it ☺️ If you're on instagram you can always send me a photo! I love looking at them :) I appreciate it! Sometimes I worry if I am too repetitive and I try and share what I can to help! I used to pick up on little things when I watched a lot of videos in my early days and it helped me so much!! 🥰

I only got into plants very very recently and fell in love with your channel. It's got everything I like: plants, cats, and chill vibes. Those fur babies are just as precious as your amazing array of mature plants. Ugh, so stunning. I can't wait for my humble collection to be at least a quarter as pretty as yours. The purrs are a big plus, btw! Your vids are nice background while studying.

    💚Moss Poles! 💚
Here are my thoughts as a viewer and a fan. Earlier this year I became a new plant owner that immersed myself in plant research, content, care, and experiments. I'm now shifting my attention to other interests, and the plant hobby is in more of a maintenance mode. I've got a couple projects in the works, but I'm putting much less time toward plants and related things. I feel like I've got recent experience as both a new and old viewer of your channel if that makes any sense. This ended up being a bit of a long-winded brain dump. I hope you like reading!
35k subs is definitely awesome! I'm seeing around 1k viewers in the first 4 hours of posting. I'd imagine almost all of these are from subscribers. There are ONE THOUSAND people that stop what they're doing to see what you've put together pretty much as soon as you put it out. They're getting more from what you've created than whatever else is going on in their lives. That's kind of fun to stop and think about. I thought your channel had been around longer, but it looks like your 2 year anniversary is in a couple weeks. That seems like solid progress!
I'm no UA-cam or business expert, but I've got some thoughts on what's been working well and what you might focus on. Here's what I like about your channel: You speak clearly, and your videos look polished. Audio and video seem pretty good. Sometimes the focus gets a little funky, but that seems pretty common with smaller channels that are a little more hands on. I like that you're detail oriented, and you seem pretty meticulous with observations and your plant care. You've demonstrated that you can solve problems and overcome situations you haven't experienced before. That combined with the variety and size of your plant collection makes you seem competent, and I feel like I can trust advise or strategies that you present. Your calm demeanor is something people constantly point out. You come across as kind and caring. Your personality combined with all your effort make for videos that are enjoyable to watch.
I think regardless of the brand, there needs to be something that differentiates your channel if the intent is to grow. I think your personality stands out, so there's an easy one. Your collection and knowledge of plants is quite impressive, and I think that gives you leg up on newer channels. It's not easy to acquire a collection like yours. It takes a lot of time and effort to get to that point. It seems even now you continue to grow your collection. Having a library of uploaded content also gives you an advantage. If you start selling plants (and merch?!), that's another way to expand and offer something smaller channels don't have available. I don't think many plant channels can claim they are the best or one of the best at something. I think you can. When it comes to the plant hobby, the thing that excites me most is moss poles. Right now I have 2 channels that I consider to be a definitive source for moss pole information, insights, and ideas. This is one of them.
Like I mentioned above, I'm no longer constantly immersing myself in plant content. The hype of the new hobby is settling down, and now I'm shifting more toward picking up little things here and there and just maintaining my little collection of plants. My attention is shifting to other interests, and I've noticed this has an effect on how I view content. I tend not to watch longer videos (>20 mins?) as often, or I'll skip around more. I also tend to be more selective with which channels I watch. When I do have some down time where I'm just relaxing, that's when I'm most likely to watch long-form videos. Having chapters helps a bunch.
Dropping from 3 to 2 videos should be fine I'd think. You've already established a solid base for your channel for new viewers to peruse. I think consistent postings is the key thing to focus on.
On the topic of videos getting repetitive, I could see that being something to keep an eye on. Some viewers just like kicking back and relaxing with longer videos. Others will be more selective. Having chore videos seem pretty common with plant channels. I'm broadly speaking here, so this isn't specific to your channel. I do get a little lost when I see lots of "plant chores" videos. I lose track of what each video contained, and it can have a tendency to blur together. If something useful was mentioned in one of these videos, it can often get lost, and I'm unable to track it down again. I think what helps is having a way to more easily tell the chore videos apart from each other. Maybe there could be a theme. Maybe if there's a special topic or challenge that was discussed, that's included in the title. Chapters help here as well.
I think having a mix of formats could be beneficial. Shorter format tutorial videos (10-20 mins?) might be better for new plant owners and new viewers. They can get a lot of densely packed information while getting exposure to your channel. Doing a couple "shock and awe" videos might be another way to get new viewers. You've got a lot of impressive plants, but sometimes the impact of their inclusion in a video can be lessened when mixed with other content. I wonder if having dedicated videos for each species and genus in your care could be worthwhile. I've come across some tiny channels because no other channel called out a plant by name in the title. Others definitely have the plant in a video somewhere, but I can't find them. I think putting more attention on the presentation of videos targeted at new viewers would be beneficial. I'd imagine these videos would draw the most view counts on a channel. Comparing products or approaches is another thing I think new plant owners would appreciate.
For longer term viewers/subscribers, seeing progress is enjoyable. I don't always have time to watch the longer videos, but I tend to zero in on moss poles. Your collection can only grow so large, and at some point there just won't be any more space. Periodic updates is an obvious option when dealing with plants. You could potentially revisit tutorial videos every 2-3 years and update them with new approaches/products. If nothing changed, maybe your video editing skills have improved, and you can put out a new, more polished version of the same video. Maybe coming up with ideas for different series is something to try out. Have a series where you experiment with things you've always wondered about but never looked into. Maybe there's a way to do some sort of interactive thing with viewers. If live interactions are too stressful, maybe users can submit photos and descriptions of their plants that fit a certain topic or theme. Then you can review the user submitted content in a video. Maybe some of this can be seasonal, to go along with holidays or something that's coming up. Maybe you can try a series on decorating in different ways.
I think variety keeps things interesting, but also focus on what's been working. I think as long as you're enjoying what you're doing, you can try new things out at your own pace. As a viewer, I wouldn't want you to get burned out feeling like you have to go in too many directions. If you do sell plants, I'll have to buy something just to be able to say, "This was grown by Melissa!" I'm definitely a fan! I look forward to it, and I wish you the best of luck!
    -Cheese

I appreciate you for taking the time to share! I read through multiple times! Your insights are so helpful and so well put together. Sometimes I feel I mix a lot of content in together and I can see what you mean with how you described it. I even have trouble finding certain videos where I have talked about something. I do want to try and mix it up and have some shorter videos and create some dedicated plant videos because I don't feel like I have done those and I can see the value in what those videos would bring.
I would love to continue to grow and better my channel but I am truly thankful for the audience I do have that continues to watch anything I put out. I try to engage with every comment I get for the first 30 minutes or so with every video I make live and those first viewers are so special to me that they are willing to tune in and watch right away. I feel so grateful 🥺
The YT algorithm can be hard to figure out haha. Shorts is really popular now and I'm not sure how many of those followers actually tune into my longer videos so I think having some shorter ones will help! Thank you so much for your kind words, thoughts and ideas. I've never had a comment like this before so it was really special and I truly appreciate that!

@@KC-gj4biI'm glad you enjoyed! I questioned if a comment was the best way to share some ideas in a longer form. Then I thought someone might get something from it, or maybe it could start a discussion so I went ahead and posted it here.

@@plantsbymelissa Awesome, I'm happy you were able to get something from it! You've definitely been a positive in my life, and I saw a chance to give something back. One thing I value highly is information, and sometimes that can be such a hard thing to track down. I think the world is a better place when people share ideas and things they've learned.
Shorts are still something I'm trying to figure out. I think they can be fun, but they seem to get old after you've seen enough of them. I'd imagine they do much better with younger audiences. So while I may rarely get something from them, it's definitely good to consider as another avenue for reaching out.

I love all your moss poles and have got about 5 so far and I can’t believe the leaves are actually sizing up!
I wanted to say that I had exactly the same vision as you have about starting a shop. I have opened an Etsy UK shop. I mainly sell rooted Hoya cuttings. Like you said I cared and wanted to make sure my customers get the best product they can and I give the best customer service and get some most amazing reviews it does make me so emotional to read them. I only have 13 listings of different plants. I manage to take cuttings from my own plants, root them generally in pon and sell them on as well rooted cuttings.
Not everyone is confident with fresh unrooted cuttings, so I think I have found a little niche in the uk market for fairly new Hoya growers who need a bit of help and advice. Like you said I have started very small. I’ve four orders to post on Monday, the most I’ve sold over a weekend and one of them is a multi order. I think it’s the photos that sell the plants and you already have all those skills. I don’t but I am learning. Now I need to be brave and make videos like you do, that is just so scary for me.
Thanks so much for sharing everything ❤ X

Hey there, just wanted to say, that I am not watching your vids for the plant stuff primarily but because your person :)
I love how calm you’re talking and thoughtfully you’re movements are. It always calms me down after a long day of working :)
So the topic of the video doesn’t matter for me as long as it’s not too much in time lapse 😅
I wanted to say, you really should not put to much pressure on yourself for choosing the right theme or topic for your next vid, cause I think so much people are here for the same as me :)
Love your content and the work you put into it!

First, I just wanna comment and say this because I watch your videos all the time and have been subscribed to your channel for awhile and I don’t think I’ve ever commented…but you are hands down my favorite and the most helpful “plant channel” I watch. I love your energy and I can just sense how genuine you are through your videos. Not to mention I’ve learned sooo much from you! I never would have felt comfortable creating my first moss pole without watching you first. I know how how stressful it can be creating content and feeling that pressure and being stuck in a rut…I have a “dog based” instagram with a pretty large following and I’ve felt all those things before. Anyway, just want to let you know there are probably more people out here than you even realize who you’ve helped with your videos and I’m sure you will sell out of your plants immediately the first few rounds! Lol.

I remember when I first found your channel and the video was actually a little sad because you said you weren't really sure if you were going to go forward with the channel because you didn't feel like it was gaining the traction that you needed it to. I was devastated because I had just found you and I have loved everything you've done. Your videos have helped so many of us, and your calm demeanor and sweet personality really comes through. I'm so excited for the plant shop... and it's fun to see you so excited about it. If you put half as much work into that as have into to this channel, you will be great!! We will be fine with a couple less videos per week, so you can actually work your dream❤. Proud of you for sticking with it. I think we can all learn a little something from you.

I love watching moss pole videos because none of my plants are climbing enough to need it yet. But I will say, some of these methods stress me out! I’m so glad that the front closing poles came out before I needed to start poles because I feel like those are the most practical to be able to chop/prop, extend.
You were saying you wished you’d have put the njoy on a bigger thickly, have you ever thought about just chopping and potting a second small one next to the first one? Like two in a pot, side by side? I haven’t seen anyone do anything like that and just thought it could be an option?
Thanks for the video! A great one as always! ❤

I’m getting a Chiapense Variegated to put on a wire only pole. Plan is to double wrap the wire mesh to make the gaps in the wire smaller. Hope it works.
